Along with Anson, Bill Sweeney also was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sweeney won 373 games in his 14 years of pro ball, all 14 years were spent playing in Boston. Sweeney was the ace of a staff that was the best in baseball and won the pitcher of the year award three different times. In 1892 Sweeney won 36 games with a 1.76 ERA in one of the best seasons ever recorded.

Sweeney helped the Beaneaters win three championships in a row between 1893 and 1895 and was part of the winningest team in history as Boston won 112 games in 1892. Sweeney is second on the all time list in wins.

Introducing the New York Highlanders

The baseball void that has existed in New York City is something hard to explain into words to the basic sports person. A city that prides itself on being the best at everything it does has been an embarasment in the sport of baseball since the pro leagues began. This winter however the city of New York did what it does best, it bought its way to getting one of the most succesfull franchises in the game, to assure that indeed baseball will reign in the Big Apple.

None other then the American League pennant winners from Baltimore will now call New York their home. The big city promised a new ball park and a jackpot of revenue, something the city of Baltimore at the current time just couldnt match. A new park at a Hill top on Manhattan has prompted the new team to be called the Highlanders and the contrast of excitement and sorrow for the two cities could not have been more dramatic.

Baltimore held protests to their city officials and threats were made at the owners of the team and American League president Ban Johnson. Still it was the Oriole fans that were left out in the cold, leaving behind memories of a team they supported to three wordl championships. There are no plans to replace a team in Baltimore although the mayor has done his best to stem fears that they wont be back in a major league again.

In New York heroes were welcomed and none more so then the ace right hander of the team, Christy Mathewson. Mathewson has been mobbed at every apperance he has made and no one can remember when expectations for a player have been higher, all for a kid who is still just 22 years old. Also welcomed with huge receptions is Billy Hamilton who has signed with the new club. Hamilton has made a miraculous comeback to the game of baseball and his presense on the club has been anticipated and touted by all.

New York in fact does have another team, the Giants but only a few very loyal fans are sticking with the old side. The Giants in many peoples view have embarassed the city, not having won a single pennant in their 21 year history and also currently sit 100 games under .500 since that time.

In the end it all seems to be about the money, and at the moment the countdown to opening day that reign all around times square are the loudest thing going. The biggest city in the nation has bought what could be the best team in the nation.

Mack Says Cubs Not In Rebuilding Mode

The Chicago Orphans have now officially changed their name to the Chiacago Cubs but manager Connie Mack says there will not be a complete change in the team. The Cubs finished third last season and didnt look very competitive next to the defending champion Cincinnati Reds.

The Cubs made a few moves this offseason by trading the likes of Duff Cooley and Amos Rusie. Rusie was a member of the team for seven seasons but will continue for the Pirates. Short stop Scott Hardesty joins the roster along with Tom Donovan from Cleveland. Finally Mack has moved Roger Bresnehan from catcher to center field to make room for the solid hitting Ossee Schreckengost behind the plate. Osee is a much better field general and should help the Chicago staff that still remains amomg the most talented in the league.

The story of Charlie Geggus and if the 41 year old right hander will return to the team are still up in the air. Geggus, who has played 12 years for Chicago is sitting on 298 career wins but is recovering from a rotator shoulder issues. Whatever his role is is surely to be almost nonesistent.

End of the road at 298 wins?

April 1903

Cubs Off To Good Start; Orth To 200 Wins

The champion Cincinnati Reds lost their first seven games of the new season showing quite a hangover into 1903. In the meantime the Cubs of Chicago with their new name and new logo are pinning this pennant race as a rebound one.

The Cubs started off well in April and won 9 of their first 16 games to take the very early lead in the National League. Chicago is lead by the familiar faces of Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke while Harry Bay and Bill Joyce have become contributing regulars on the team that is batting .281. With Roger Bresnahan and Doc Smoot also due back from injuries soon, the lineup should only get stronger.

Along with Eddie Plank and Jack Chesbro, the work load on the mound is lead by Al Orth who is in his 10 year with the club. Orth has been brilliant in his career and in Cincinnati on the 27th he won his 200th game at the age of 30. Orth has won over 20 games seven times in his career and even more impressive is is his record of 200-116 showing that he wins almost twice as often as he takes a loss.

Al Orth 250 wins

"Al is a leader when he takes the mound and makes sure we are ready to play and to win" says shortstop Wagner, "he is involved in our positioning and can tip us his pitches so that we can now where the ball is going."

Orth was humble upon his milestone win and is much more concerned about winning his first championship. No other player who wins so much deserves it more and Orth has had some bad memories and performances in his four World Series appearances losing four times.

"We deserve a winner for our fans" says Orth, "my career wont be as special without that moment of success."

The team as a whole doesnt talk much of a World Series in early May, the road everyone knows is a long and hard one ahead. The start however is a good one.

New Age In New York

A historic day in New York City as in April 30th the New York Highlanders took the field at Hill Top Stadium for the first time marking a new era in baseball. The Highlanders come from Baltimore with all the talent in the world and have been embraced as such by the many fans that have crossed over from the struggling Giants.

Over 7000 fans watched the new team defeat the Washington Senators on a bright afternoon. Billy Hart pitched a complete game win and fans cheered and extolled their side at every move. The big stars like Mike Donlin and Sam Mertes heard their names chanted throughout the game.

Overall the Highlanders have had a medicore start at 3-5 but after all the distractions they should find their groove again. On the other side of town the New York Giants are doing their desperate best to keep their fans at the Polo Grounds with a 7-6 start.

At least one fan was less then impressed wth the new sUroundings, "This park is too small for a New York club; im heading back to the Polo Grounds"

The battle for the fans in New York is already a rivalry, surely the team that finds a wy to win on the field will win at the gate.

League Notes
  • Ed Delahanty lined the 2500th hit of his career this month for the Boston Beaneaters. Delahanty at 35 years old is a .337 career hitter.
  • Heinie Peitz of the Boston Amercians had a 24 game hitting streak snapped that carried over from last season.
  • At 40 years old Jim "Pony" Ryan is showing that his playing days are far from over hitting .361 in the opening month and leading all of baseball in slugging percentage. Ryan is in his 17th season in the league.

Salaries Peak Over $3000

With stability now between the two big leagues in the game and respected competition, baseball continues to reach heights that few thought they could. It was announced this week that a number of current ball playing stars are set to make more then $3000 dollars for this season, a number undreamed of just a few years back.

With attendance through the league at an alltime high and endorement deals for a number of players common place, owners have been able to spend more on the top talent, but even so many are saying they are not spending near enough. Owners of course do not disclose how much profit they are making among the 16 league franchises, but with gate receipts now averaging over 10,000 fans a game, one can do the simple math.

Mertes highest paid player in the game

A look at the topped paid players in the league is as follows, some of the names just may surprise you as they are not considered the best players in the game.

1. Sam Mertes - NY Highlanders..................$3,338
2. Emmett Heidrick - NY Highlanders...........$3,204
3. Honus Wagner - Chicago Cubs..................$3,168
4. Jimmy Williams - Detroit Tigers................$3,062

Other stars like Nap Lajoie are making closer to $2,500 and Rube Waddell $2,400. It is obvious that each club does its own negotiating and the new New York club has done everything it could to build an immediate winner for their new located team.

The 1903 amatuer draft is coming up next month and for the top prospects like Miller Huggins and Ed Walsh, initial fees may be at all time highs.

Once again....it pays to play.

Toad Almost Perfect

Toad Ramsey this month thought he shoudl have pitched only the second perfect game in history. This however wasnt meant to be in the Tigers 15-0 win over Washington. Ramsey faced 28 men and did not allow a hit but walked a man on a pitch that he tought should have been good enough.

Fans indeed gave the umpire a very difficult time on the day at Bennet Park but the word of the game caller stands. Despite all of this Ramsey does become the oldest man to throw a no hitter at the age of 38 and truly has had a stellar career. It is ineed another outstanding season for him with an ERA currently at 1.71, the left hander has compiled 357 wins.

"I thought I was perfect but Im not going to make a big deal about the walk and the call" said a subdued Ramsey after the win, "maybe if im lucky ill have a chance to do it all over again and leave no doubt."

The Tigers need some good news as they sit 6.5 games back in the American League and cant truly depend on a 38 year old arm forever.

The Tabasco Kid Rides Into Chicago

The Chicago Cubs continue to outplay the world champion Cincinnati Reds as the season reaches its halfway point winning 17 games in June. Still the Cubs are taking no chances and know they will need the intangibles to assure they are able to get over the top and regain the pennant.

Passion and fire are something any winning team needs and the Cubs know something about that as John McGraw used to bring it for a few years ago. Now Kid Elberfeld joins the team after a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier this month and his fiery personality comes with him. Elberfeld is also known as the Tobasco Kid as he grew up in Pomeroy, Ohio and likes to mix it up with his opponents. Elberfield plays the game hard and wont back down to any challenge. Still his desire all comes from a will to win and he will stop at nothing to get the job done.

Elderfield and Honus Wagner should put together one of the best double play combos around and it is Elderfield who can keep fire under some of the teams talented stars like Wagner.

"We need someone to push us" says Jimmy Collins who has 56 RBI this season. Mr. Mack is a great baseball man but is more reserved, someone like this kid will keep us focused at all times."

Star outfielder Fred Clarke has an oblique injury and will miss 3 weeks of action. Chicago will need all hands on deck in July as they try and keep or even extend their National league lead.

In the recent June draft Chicago drafted first baseman Johny Lush from Pennsylvania followed by left fielder Bob Hall.

Frisbee Up To 35 Games

Charlie Frisbee of the Detroit Tigers hit in his 35th consecutive game this month and his streak is still alive. The switch hitter has the fourth longest streak of all time and has in his sights the 42 game record streak accomplished by Willie Keeler in 1898.

350 Wins for Steady Pete

Pete Meegan became the fifth winningest pitcher of alltime winning his 350th game this month for the Washington Senators. Meegan turned 40 this year and is likely in his final season having started seven times for the Senators and a 3-4 record. Meegan in his prime was dominant for Cleveland, New York, and Brooklyn and started his 17 year career in 1883.

Meegan also threw a no hitter earlier this year proving that although he might be nearing the end, he is definitely leaving the game while on top.

Notes
  • Hugh Duffy the right fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies has announced that this will be his final season. Sir Hugh has tallied 2278 hits in his career and won the World Series on three different occasions.
  • Jim Handibone won his 300th game this month as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. Handibone was a key member of the championship team last season and at 36 years of age has an outside shot at 350 or more wins.
  • Star Ed Delahanty will miss the next two months of action and maybe the rest of the season due to a serious hamstring issue. Delahanty and the Beaneaters are seven games out of the race but now really will have their work cut out for them as the .341 hitter will be sitting out.
