Shea Stadium,Queens,NY-After a long cold winter, opening day is finally here, and what could be better for a baseball fan than getting to see two of the National League's best hurlers go at it on a beautiful afternoon here at Shea.Early on,as the Phillies Steve Carlton struggled to find his rhythm, the Mets built up a 2-0 lead after 3,but in the 4th,the Phillies struck back, pounding Tom Seaver for 4 runs on 4 hits including a stunning 3 run homer by Phils pitcher Steve Carlton that gave the Phillies a 4-2 lead after 4.In the 5th,with Seaver now out of the game, the Phils struck for 3 more runs thanks to an RBI single by Vada Pinson followed by a Bob Boone two run double giving the Phillies a 7-2 lead on their way to a convincing 9-3 opening day victory.

Shea Stadium,Queens,NY-Picking up where they left off yesterday, the Phillies and Mets went at it tooth and nail with the Mets taking a 1-0 lead into the 9th where the Phillies cracked four straight singles, the last being a two run single by Greg Luzinski that gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the 9th where reliever Bucky Brandon allowed a two out single to Rusty Staub before getting Wayne Garrett to ground out 1-3 to preserve the one run Philadelphia victory. The Phillies will now head home to take on the improved Expos in a two game series.

Veterans Stadium,Philadelphia,Pa.-In an exciting contest here at The Vet,Phillies ace Steve Carlton locked horns with Montreal's Carl Morton in a tense pitcher's dual that saw the Phillies take a 1-0 lead into the 8th only to see a Boots Day ground out allow Bob Bailey to score the game tying run after seven and a half.In the bottom half of the inning, the Phillies turned it on,cranking out 4 hits including a Garry Maddox two run double that put the Phillies ahead to stay,5-1.With today's win,the Phillies find themselves at 4-1,alone atop the National League's Eastern division.

Since coming over to the Phillies,he's 25-9 with a 2.38 ERA and 275 strikeouts,he also has a .641 CG% as well as 5 shutouts.I'd say that getting off on the right foot.

Veterans Stadium,Philadelphia,Pa.-In another fantastic pitcher's duel, the Phillies Jim Lonborg and the Mets Jon Matlack battled through seven and a half scoreless innings where once again, the Phillies struck the decisive blow, scoring 3 times on 4 hits to defeat New York,3-0.For Lonborg, today's 4 hit complete game shutout is a huge confidence builder,as he attempts to atone for last season's dreadful 22 loss season.

Veterans Stadium,Philadelphia,Pa.-Thanks to a sparkling game by second baseman Dave Cash, that saw him go 2 for 4 with a double,a home run,3 RBI and 2 runs scored, the Phillies cruised to an easy 8-2 victory over Jerry Koosman and the struggling Mets. With the loss, the Mets fall to a disheartening 2-5 while the Phillies continue to roll at 6-1.

Veterans Stadium,Philadelphia,Pa.-In the final game of this weekend series, the Phillies continued to roll thanks once again to fantastic pitching, this time by rookie Larry Christenson, and timely hitting which has been the hallmark of this early season win streak.Trailing 2-1 in the 5th,the Phils got an RBI single by Dave Cash, followed later in the inning by a Mike Schmidt RBI single that scored Cash and put the home team ahead 4-2.From there,it was all pitching as Christenson and reliever Mike Wallace(who notched his first career save) closed the door on a 4-3 Phillies victory.

Lucky 7!
Jarry Park,Montreal,Que-Thanks to another solid start by port side twirler Steve Carlton, the Phillies won their 7th straight game with today's 7-3 victory over the hometown Expos.By unleashing a balanced attack that few teams in this league can match, the Phillies pounded out 11 hits while scoring runs in the 3rd,7th and 8th innings to corral Carlton's third win of the season. Expos Moore Snaps Phils Streak At 7
Jarry Park,Montreal,Que-Despite having just one bad inning,in which he allowed 4 runs on 6 hits,Phillies starter Jim Lonborg was saddled with his first loss of the season in a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Montreal Expos.Trailing for most of the game, the Phillies finally got to Expos starter Balor Moore in the 7th,as they scored twice while loading the bases with one out prompting a Montreal pitching change.Enter Expos rookie Steve Rogers, who calmly eliminated the threat, getting Mike Schmidt to ground into a 1-2 fielder's choice at the plate, and following it up with a fearsome strikeout of slugger Greg Luzinski. From there,Rogers would pitch two more perfect innings to collect his first career save. Reuss Strong In 6-2 Victory
Jarry Park,Montreal,Quebec-In the third and final game of the series, the Phillies bounced right back from yesterday's defeat, thanks to another fine pitching performance by starter Jerry Reuss, who went 7 strong innings in which he allowed 7 hits and one earned run in the Phillies 6-2 victory. The game turned in the visitors favor in the third, where two walks and an error led to two run doubles by Garry Maddox and Willie Montanez that put the Phillies up 4-0 and set the tone for the victory. Phils Win Thriller 6-5
Veterans Stadium,Phila,Pa.-Early on,it looked like another easy win for the Phillies,as they sprinted out to a 5-2 lead after four, but St.Louis battled back and eventually tied the game in the 9th on a Ted Simmons solo homer off of Phils reliever Mike Wallace. In the bottom of the inning though, the Phillies once again prevailed thanks to a larry Bowa two out walk off single that gave the Phillies the 6-5 victory. Phils And Cards Split Twin Bill
Veterans Stadium,Phila,Pa.-In game one of today's twi-night doubleheader,Cardinals starter Rick Wise was absolutely amazing, outpitching Phillies ace Steve Carlton on his way to a convincing 5-0 shutout victory. For the game,Wise scattered 9 hits while striking out 3.In game two,the teams once again waged a bitter war in which every pitch was played like it was the last.Entering the 9th,the Phillies were clinging to a 1-0 lead when once again,St.Louis got to Phillies reliever Mike Wallace who allowed a game tying RBI single to Joe Hague, sending the game into extra innings where in the bottom of the 12th,Phils catcher Mike Ryan sent them home happy with a sacrifice fly that scored Greg Luzinski and gave the Phillies the 2-1 victory. Box Score-Game 1
