I saw that too and felt the same way. I get the feeling he's spent his career to this point being praised for being great and gotten very little actual instruction.

I was at the game and I would like to say that Wright is what people imagine ARod should be this year. Eli Marrero is a very good pickup (utility IF/OF/emergency catcher) and Ramon Castro is a very very good backup catcher.

And Wright has already surpassed Piazza in terms of my favorite Mets.

He just needs two more things before he passes Hernandez (childhood idol) for me. One long term contract signing and a few more good years would do it.

Way back when it was Gooden until he f'd it up. I was also a big McReynolds fan during his first stint. No flash, just production. As Bill James once put it, a very good player who was criticized for not being great.

Didn't really have a big favorite after that until Alfonzo and Piazza. But Wright plays how you're supposed to, is a team guy, by every account a great kid...just great to watch. My boys are already being raised Mets, and Wright, fans

Oh, and David Wright will carry the torch that Jeter carries as New York's golden boy. Wright is the complete package.

Yeah, I was a big McReynolds fan back in the day. He was quiet, the opposite of flashy, and played really hard. I still remember, starting out in Freshman year of high school in 1988, talking to two other guys while registering for classes, I told them that McReynolds was my favorite player. One guy agreed, and the other thought we were both crazy to pick him over Strawberry.

After that, I think another favorite didn't come until Olerud. Similarly subdued personality combined with very solid play. I still think he's one of the most underrated players in Mets history.

I could see that Wright is a new favorite among the younger fans, but of course my heart will belong to Piazza and also David Cone. For my six year old cousin, it's David Wright that he will remember.

Wright may never have the Jeter-eque ability to answer (dodge) questions

Wait. . . I think of Piazza as an idol to younger fans and Wright the 'idol' for elementary school kids.

I'm not even 30 yet, and I best remember the late 80s Mets.
What's going on here, that people with kids remember Piazza over Carter?

Well, I am over 30, and the Gary Carter I mostly remember with the Mets is the one who kept playing after he had outlived his usefulness, which was around 1987. Carter was a very good player, and his HOF status is deserved, but Piazza is a historic player, the biggest offensive force the Mets have ever had, and he still hasn't outlived his usefulness.

I'll be 45 next month and I guess my idol of all time Mets would be Tom Terrific. From that 86 squad, it would have to be Mex. Great hitter, great 1B. Watching him swoop in, grab a bunt and nail the runner at 2B was special.

Piazza was the most complete hitter that ever wore a Mets uniform. Wright will surpass him, IMO.

I'm 32. I know the 80s Mets and loved Mex, Carter, Mookie, etc. But Piazza is still my favorite Met of all time. Wright, however, may very well pass him.

I'm definetly in the minority.
Piazza was never one of my favorite Mets. That title goes to two players, one is probably a surprise to most.

Dave Kingman and Lenny Dykstra (pre-roids). Mookie is a close third.

David Wright is quickly becoming my favorite Met, and is by far, my favorite Met on the team right now.

I'm 22, so I really only seriously started following baseball about 10 years ago. Back then it would have convienent to be a Yankers fan, but it was the Mike Piazza trade that pushed me to the Mets side. I'm a bit too young to see the 80s Mets, although I have vivid memories of going to Shea when I was about 3-5 years old and seeing Straw blast a HR over the left field wall.

Fonzie is definetly my favorite Met since 86... but Wright is my favorite since him. His year in 2000 is one of the best ever for a Met.

Mets win 9-2...Delgado goes yard, Nady does it twice. Trachsel is effective, and HOMERS...and the bullpen closes it out. Neat and tidy.

This game will either shut up the stupid talk radio comments that the Mets are in an offensive funk, or they will take credit for snapping them out of the supposed funk themselves. If you chose option 1, there is a bridge I would love to sell you cheap!

BTW, if previous posts hadn't made it clear, Mex is my #1, then old films of Casey Stengel #2 and Leiter #3 in the late 90s. Never Piazza for some reason. Maybe because I would have felt like I was jumping on a bandwagon. I don't have problems jumpin on and heck even leading the Wright bandwagon tho

. He's my new #2, and has a fairly good shot at #1 already.

MVP baby! (Provided that Pujols doesnt continue at his insane pace when he gets back).
