Whew, Morris' contact finally went back up to 9. Guess he's fully recovered from that ruptured bicep tendon. His average continues to drop though...if he falls below .300, I may have a seizure.

Out of curiosity Matt, why did you name your website SouthernBaseball? Seems to have nothing to do with TWB. I assume you owned the site beforehand then switched TWB over to it. But you can't rename it for the new site? I doubt TimeWarpBaseball.com is being used. |

WEB PAGES UPDATED...
July 1951 The A's looked human at the beginning of July when they lost 9 of 11 games from the 2nd through the 16th. They quickly turned that around by winning 11 of their final 14 games this month. With just two months left in the season, Philly holds a commanding 11.5-game lead over Boston. The NL took a collective gasp when the Giants and Reds finished the month on top of the standings. New York went 17-8 in July, while Cincy went 16-11. The Cardinals were just 12-14 and are now 1-game back. It looks like a three horse race as the Braves and Pirates are struggling. Baseball is experiencing something of a youth movement. There have been years when finding a ROY candidate was tough, but not anymore. Rookies and other young talents are plentiful nowadays. 24-year-old Yankees outfielder John Young leads the AL batting race. 26-year-old A's shortstop Ace Habermehl is hitting .316 and leads the majors with 48 steals. Meanwhile, the A's young rotation continues it's dominance with 25-year-old Ellis Weeks leading the majors with a 2.06 ERA. 25-year-old Bob Stevens is 3rd in the AL with a 2.72 ERA and 3rd with 134 K's. 24-year-old Cubs pitcher Randy Liebermann is 3rd in the NL with 108 K's. Pirates pitcher Martin Gwaltney, 25, is a leading ROY candidate with a 10-5 record and 3.23 ERA. Red Sox pitcher Nippy Schnaubert, 23, leads the AL with 15 wins. There are several other top young players out there that are either coming along more slowly or are not getting regular playing time. Either way, the future looks exciting! In The News July 2: Bill Veeck got the necessary 75 percent of outstanding stock on the last day of his option to buy the St. Louis Browns from Bill and Charlie DeWitt. July 3: Former Dodger pitcher, and potential Hall of Famer, Remmy Paul, 42, killed himself with a shotgun blast to the neck. It was later reported that Paul was suffering through depression after losing his home to bankruptcy. "People don't know this but Remmy battled this his whole career," said former teammate Frank Smith at Paul's funeral in Auburn, Washington. Paul's 15-yr-old son Tommy was killed two years ago in a car accident. Friends believe that loss along with heavy drinking were contributing factors. July 5: In Cleveland, in an effort to defeat the league-leading Athletics, the Indians distributed 15,000 lucky rabbits feet for Beat Ellis Weeks Night. The ploy must have brought some luck because with the Tribe down 6-3 going into the bottom of the 9th, Weeks was lifted for closer Billy Crowell. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs, and then 2B John Valcarcel hit a game winning Grand Slam down the left field line. Weeks recalled later, "While I was warming up before the game, a drunk came on the field and threw a black cat at me and it clung to my uniform jersey." Cleveland went on to sweep the A's by a combined score of 21-11. The Tribe even scored a lucky 7 runs in all three games. Coincidence? July 9: At a joint meeting between players and owners, an agreement was reached on night curfews and the retention of the reserve clause. July 15: Happy Chandler completed his contract as baseball commissioner but failed to win the owners' support for a contract renewal. July 18: Congressman Emanuel Celler said that President Harry Truman backs his probe of the reserve clause and sports status under the antitrust legislation. July 30: 69-year-old Hall of Famer Woody Woodson testified before the Emanuel Celler committee, denying that the reserve clause makes "peons" of baseball players. National Association President George Trautman testified, denying that minor leagues hampered independent teams. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Corky Stell (DET)! He had a record of 5-0 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 0.55 and 1 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Ray Kress (DET)! He batted .408 in 76 AB, with 6 homers and 22 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Edgar Weingarten (CHN)! He had a record of 5-2 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.55 and 2 shutouts. National League-Batter of the Month: Maurice Goza (CIN)! He batted .377 in 106 AB, with 5 homers and 25 RBI. Code:

Matt, when looking at NL ROY candidates let's not forget the #2 NL pitcher in wins, Walter Pond.
Oh and look who's still leading the NL in HR and RBI - Go Roadhouse! Last edited by tward13; 02-08-2005 at 12:00 PM. |

It was good to see the Indians send 4 players to the AS game despite sitting in 7th place. I have feeling this team is going to have a good August and September. While I'd love to get a high draft pick one more time, it's really time for this team to start competing.
On a side note, looks like Dietrich's almost fully developed now. He's still got a small power improvement to make, and he could hit righties better, but lefties are going to suffer when he's up. Here's hoping he has a long, successful career!

Horrible news about Paul.
Worse news about the Braves. Ugh. But how often do you see 2 players on the same team among the league leaders in saves? |

Wow...Remmy Paul...
Just tells you how great this league is. When I read that, I was really taken aback. Felt like he was a real person. Especially that little comment from Frank Smith. Really casts a light on 20 years of Dodger history. Sad day. |

This is probably a stupid question but was Remmy an ancestor?

Also, sad to see Woodson in favor of the reserve clause. I don't know why he would do that. I realize the Cardinals are one of the best organizations in baseball, and they treat their players extraordinarily well, but still, the reserve clause is blatant exploitation.
Matt, when you, or someone else, builds the coming crisis and history of the MLBPA and Fre Agency, do you plan on using real people, like Marivn Miller? Interesting to see how this will play out. We got quite a ways to go though. |

Friends believe that loss > along with heavy drinking were contributing factors. :.( From 1939-44 and again after the war form 1946-47, Frank Smith and Remmy Paul were one of the greatest 1-2 pairings in TWB history. In those eight years they combined to go 327-179, or 41-22 per year. They went 1-2 in ERA in 1941, 1942, 1944 and 1946, 1-3 in 1943 and 2-3 in 1947. As teammates they went 573-310, which I believe is only topped by Phab Phour members Scott Fenner and Terry Schukraft (don't have an exact number, but they were 560-364 going into 1937, they combined to go 30-36 that year, but Fenner was traded to the Tigers on 7/27/37... I suspect they won about 20 games as teammates that year, but would have to check the almanac to be sure). Paul joined the Dodger rotation in 1933. From that year to 1946, the Dodgers won 11 POY in 14 years - eight by Smith and three by Paul, including nine in 10 years between 1937-46. Truly an amazing duo. We'll have to do a write up for the site. ![]() John |

Matt, thank you so much for Catobase. This is truly fantastic.
I hate to quibble, but are you going to stick with this skin? Personally I prefer the default one. Maybe we should have a vote or something? Plenty of .css files to choose from. |
