Blake Crocitto...the Hitman is now 12th on the all time list with 3255 hits...he may not reach Sal Rossi...but he should finish the year as #10...Blake also hit his 500th double
Jonathan Wright...the White Rhino is now 20th on the 2bs list and there is a good chance he should pass Phillies coach and Future HOFer "Sunny" Davie by years end to be tied for 15th Pokey Dorsey is not a HOFer by any stretch...but at 40 he has been playing decent. He is 11th active with 1626 hits 14th Active with 809 RBI 4th Active with 391 2bs 2nd Active with 145 3bs 8th Active with 202 sbs 8th Active with 948 runs 7th Active with 782 walks Nice all around player

Wonder if Crocitto has another full season in him? He could make a nice jump up the list.

> Blake Crocitto...the Hitman is now 12th
> on the all time list with 3255 hits...he > may not reach Sal Rossi...but he should > finish the year as #10...Blake also hit his > 500th double Looks like he was pulled from the starting lineup in the second half of the month, instead coming off the bench for some spot starts, some PH, and some replacing of Alexander mid-game. He responded to this *strongly*, playing his best ball of the season. 8/19 with an HR and 7 RBI, .421/.522/.579. He might just hang onto the #2 BA of all-time, though Haymaker is breathing down his neck. > Jonathan Wright...the White Rhino is now > 20th on the 2bs list and there is a good > chance he should pass Phillies coach > and Future HOFer "Sunny" Davie by > years end to be tied for 15th 2749 hits for his career. He is declining, but if he hangs on this season at this level, he should go into next with about 2820-2830 hits. He has a shot at 3,000, even with three seasons missed to the war. > Pokey Dorsey is not a HOFer by any > stretch...but at 40 he has been > playing decent. > > Nice all around player He didn't miss any time due to the war, but he didn't get a regular job for a full season until he was 28 after being traded from the Braves to the Red Sox. The coming out of the war, he was forced into a UT spot for the Red Sox behind Goza. Then being disappointing for the Phils in 1948 after the trade. Then as part of the Great 1949 Phillies, while still a fine player he was part of the Team Phils mentality where lots of players were sharing time and moving around the IF. It did help the team have amazing depth, but probably cost him a 7th Gold Glove at 2B. Most amazingly about Pokey: 7 - full seasons at 2B 6 - Gold Gloves Only in 1944 when Sean Carlin of the Indians won the award did Pokey lose a Gold Glove that he had enough playing time to compete for. I'm not sure he was as good of a fielder as Woody Woodson, the best fielding (as well as hitting) 2B of all-time. But it's fair to say that he ranks with Stines as no worse than the second best fielding 2B of all-time. As far as the HOF, he probably isn't one. But those career averages - .285/.370/.451/.822 - are well within HOF numbers for someone with a glove *that* great. Playing time did him in as much as anything: * Drafted in 1929 by the Cards, possibly catching someone's eye as the possible successor to the Woodson-Stines Golden Tradition in STL. * having his heart broken by being traded away to the Senators on 6/16/1929. * being traded to the Braves on 5/5/1931. * never getting above A ball until 1933, despite hitting .320+ and slugging .440+ *every year*. * rotting in the Braves system through 1936, before rotting on their MLB bench in 1937 (looks possibly like a Void player). * finally getting a chance to play fulltime after the 7/13/1938 trade across town, and almost overnight blossoming into a star player. * running into Post War Red Sox Management's desire to roll out the younger Goza. * having an "off season" in 1948 after the trade. Despite the long and winding road, it was a wonderful run. 5 pennants. Four World Championships. He didn't shine for the Phils in his last two trips to the World Series, but he was a terrific peformer for the Red Sox. Really a nice career. I'd take that over what befell Doc any day. ![]() John |

jdw, I think you cursed Morris. The moment we start talking about his place in history, eh falls off the face of the earth. He was hitting .365 when we talked about it, now he's down to .320! GAHH!! He better get that bump back up to 9 contact.
Ben Lutske just makes no sense. His playing is defying his ratings, but his numbers are just weird. He plays every day, but has so few hits and at bats, its frustrating. Maybe I'm just so used to the large numbers Morris puts up that Ben's can't compare. |

He was hitting down in the line-up, like in 7th or so. He's now moved up, seemingly in the last SIM as Doc was moved out of the top of the order. In addition, he also gets either a little more rest than other starters. It looks like Buck Tomlinson spots starts for him a decent amount. > Maybe I'm just so used to the > large numbers Morris puts up > that Ben's can't compare. Yep. Morris and Ben aren't comperable. Though as been gets older and his Power kicks in, he should be very good. I think he's a bit over his head this year, but 6/8/6/4 Talent is someone who should hit in Wrigley for a decent average and some HR & 2B power. He was out of his head in May (.376/.434/.667 with 9 2B and 6 HR). John |

Did someone kill the TWB site again, or is it just me? I can't get it to come up, and I think that pesky creed might have claimed one of my players off waivers.

That broadcast was too cool.
Too bad Kress didn't get any help on offense for the AL. I really thought it was going to be a higher scoring game than that. Congrats to the NL pitchers. To dominate like that in Tigers stadium is a nice accomplishment.

Tiger fans enjoyed the game, I'm sure. Kress had a great game. Perly got in late. And Boe and Moore played for the NL.

As far as when the site will be upgraded, I'm not sure. Could be done anytime I guess. I asked them to tell me when our current plan expires & I never heard back. Will have to ask again. And with 75 or so email acct's, I think we'll have a few to spare for loyal fans.

Right now the WS is scheduled for Tues 2/15... If the pennant races are over by 9/15 and I finish Sept on this Friday, we could do the WS Friday night or Saturday. We'll see. |

1951 All-Star Game
Tiger Stadium, Detroit BOX SCORE The NL started things right off in the 1st inning when Giants 3B Nick Pursell stroked a 1-out single off AL starter Ellis Weeks of the A's, then stole 2nd base, then moved to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by new teammate Johnny Champagne. After that, pitching ruled the game. That is, until the top of the 7th. With Cleveland's Lex Tjeenk-Willink entering the game, Champagne struck out but Braves 1B Ken Chaucer walked. Cardinals outfielder Ogden Wing singled. Pinch runner William Perry moved to 3rd and Wing advanced to 2nd on the throw. Reliever Billy Hyberg of the Red Sox came in and walked Herman Dunkel. After Phillies 2B Joe Bardo flew out for out 2, the AL was close to getting out of the jam. Then Cardinals SS Mike Fellner stepped up and hit a Grand Slam in his first at-bat of the game. That was all she wrote for the AL. And the NL pitchers combined for a 2-hit shutout... The first shutout in All-Star Game history. Code:
