When Kerry Carpenter walked into the Tigers’ clubhouse for the first time this spring, the reality hit him. This is his first time in the big-league locker room. Last year he was a prospect on the fringes, just another name in the system. Now he was walking through the doors and getting a boisterous greeting from the don of the Tigers’ clubhouse himself, Miguel Cabrera.

“It’s a special feeling,” Carpenter said. “But I feel ready.”

Carpenter was perhaps the best story in the Tigers’ system last year. In 2020, he was still grieving over losing his father to liver cancer. He worked at Dick’s Sporting Goods to help make ends meet during the pandemic season. He was a 19th-round draft pick who went on the have a solid 2021 in Double-A Erie.

Growing up in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Gabriel Moreno would go to tryout after tryout, like thousands of other kids, hoping to catch the eye of a scout. Each time, he’d come away feeling he succeeded, having sprayed the ball all over the field and recorded base hit after base hit. But Moreno’s skillset didn’t lend itself to these settings. As an infielder back then, his fielding wasn’t particularly fluid. At the plate, his undersized frame didn’t carry the natural power to put on a batting practice show. Looping liners over second base don’t drop jaws. Eventually, interest did start to trickle in. When an offer did come in, it was a mere $25,000 from the Blue Jays. Throwaway money for an organization. The type of move a GM doesn’t even have to sign off on.

“When I was named and ranked, a 'prospect,' that kind of propelled me a little bit to know and understand that I can get to that level,” Moreno said.

He might spend the next decade in the major leagues, making millions of dollars, but he’ll always be Gabi Moreno, son of a construction worker and stay-at-home mom; product of the economic calamity that engulfed Venezuela in the 2010s. Prospect #45. Ronaiker Palma (1.5 points, 2 ballots) — a 2017 international signee out of Venezuela who wasn’t protected or selected in the Rule 5 draft this year, the 23-year-old is an athletic catcher noted for his high-contact ways and strong catch and throw skills. Palma hit well in High-A Spokane, with a .300/.336/.401 line (106 wRC+) in 247 PA as the back-up to top 100 prospect Drew Romo. Fangraphs likes Palma enough to rank him 31st in the system as a 35+ FV prospect:

Palma is built like a Volkswagen Beetle and is extremely difficult to make swing and miss in the strike zone. He’s been in pro ball since 2018 and has only struck out 36 times during affiliated games. He’s also barely played, in part due to injury, and has only averaged about 40 annual games as a pro. Healthy Palma is a plus athlete with great catch-and-throw skills thanks to the quickness of his release. His offensive skill set is similar to Yohel Pozo and Willians Astudillo, and Palma has a seemingly pathological need to put balls in play, though he doesn’t yet have the same kind of power on contact as either Pozo or Astudillo. For now, he’s an interesting sleeper at a very shallow big-league position.

Diamondbacks Prediction: Brandon Pfaadt finishes Top 25 in strikeouts

Pfaadt is 24 and has a path to the Diamondbacks rotation and being the second-best pitcher in Arizona. In 167 Minor League innings last year, Pfaadt had 218 strikeouts to 33 walks (31.6 K%, 4.8 BB%) and that 26.8 K-BB% would have ranked first among starters. Obviously, I don’t expect Pfaadt to dominate more than Shohei Ohtani or Gerrit Cole on a per-batter basis, but he’s clearly ready for the majors — and the majors are ready for him, with Merrill Kelly as the current Diamondbacks No. 2. If the Diamondbacks start Pfaadt immediately and let him reach 180+ innings, he could rival Zac Gallen as the team’s best starter and be a Top 20 pitcher. - The Athletic from "2023 fantasy baseball bold predictions"

The CUF pack 2.0 is now updated in Steam. I had to go to the Workshop Central, redownload and reinstall (an option when you highlight it from the list of subscribed items) and then it took. To see if it went through after you reinstall it, check our friend Brandon Pfaadt's visage. If you have the old one, go to Player Editor and Auto Reload the facegen to ensure it's not just an old cache image... and if he's still scary, go to the Workshop again and don't just hit "Update", hit "Redownload and reinstall". John Bass was a successful slugger in 1871, the first year of the National Association. He led the league with 10 triples (in 22 games) and was only one home run away from leading the league, hitting three. His slugging percentage of .640 was third in the league and he led the league in at-bats per home run. He played only two games in 1872, and then did not come back until 1877 in the National League, appearing in only one game. John Bass died around the age of 40. - bRef Bullpen wiki

I fed the newspaper clipping into the AI many times and all the images resembled the newspaper photo in his likeness, but it took me a while to get one that threw off the photo imperfections and kept the resemblance. It was that that I used for the facegen.

As a freshman last season, John Spikerman gave Oklahoma a much-needed offensive boost when he returned from injury midseason. Spikerman, who batted leadoff in all 16 of OU’s postseason games, finished the 2022 season with a .317 batting average, two home runs and 15 RBIs with 30 runs scored.

Entering the 2023 season, Spikerman was a preseason All-Big 12 selection and one of a few returning contributors. However, he’s battled a sophomore slump, with just a .203 batting average. “That’s baseball,” Spikerman said Thursday. “I’m not too worried about it. Ah, he seemed generic without the smile crease so I toned it down but kept it. The "Detail Modulator" on the main tab in facegen can be used to moderate, if needed.
