Here is most of the info for the July 1st update. I will post another one for August 1st and then go back to day to day recaps effective mid-August. Might take a week or two to get to that point as I have ordered a new cpu but have to wait for it to arrive and then need to get everything installed.
TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : SUNDAY JULY 1, 1947 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PHILLIES TAKE OVER TOP SPOT IN NATIONAL LEAGUE Thanks to the major league's stingiest pitching staff the Philadelphia Phillies have surpassed the Pittsburgh Pirates and taken over first place in the National League. Unquestionably the key to the Phillies rise was the pitching of starters Charley Schanz (13-5, 2.90), Max Macon (7-2, 2.83), Vic Lombardi (9-6, 2.95) and Hugh Mulcahy (8-7, 3.72). The Phillies are middle of the pack in runs scored but do lead the major leagues in homers with 61 including 11 each from Joe Gordon and Buster Adams. Pittsburgh's offense is still the senior circuit's best but it has slowed of late and while Preacher Roe (14-1, 2.39) is enjoying a Cy Young season the rest of the staff, aside from veteran Cliff Melton (8-3, 2.23, has struggled. In the American League the Cleveland Indians still lead the way but the margin is down to 4 games ahead of the surging St Louis Browns. Steve Gromek (9-3, 3.84) and Bob Feller (5-3,2.47) have pitched well but the Indians are really feeling the absence of ace Bill Lohrman (9-0, 1.15) who has missed a month with a shoulder injury. The second place Browns have been winning the tight games mainly due to an outstanding bullpen. The big story is in Boston where the Red Sox are suddenly a factor after one of the worst starts in league history. Ted Williams (.343,13,42) is back on track and now a triple crown candidate while pitcher Andy Karl (11-2, 3.76) is well on his way to a second straight 20-win season. Code:

First contested in 1904, the Canadian Open is the third oldest tournament behind the British and US Opens. TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : TUESDAY JULY 31, 1947
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL RED SOX PUTTING PRESSURE ON INDIANS After a 3-15 start to the season it certainly did not look like the Boston Red Sox would be pennant contenders. However, the Red Sox are 49-29 since the first week of May and now find themselves in second place in the American League, just 4 and a half games behind front running Cleveland. The Indians, with the best pitching staff in the major leagues, will be tough to catch. Bill Lohrman (10-1, 1.20) is back from a shoulder injury that cost him 6 weeks. The Tribe also have Bob Feller (10-5, 2.17) who at age 28 is finally healthy and pitching like he was expected to when he joined the Indians nearly a decade ago. The addition of Warren Spahn (11-9, 3.34) won't hurt things in Cleveland either. Ray Poat (6-9, 3.59) and Johnny Babich (6-9, 3.40) have also spent time in the rotation. The Red Sox strength is their hitting led by Ted Williams (.341,21,66), Babe Young (.261,12,64), Johnny Peskey (.333,3,36) and Mel Almada (.330,3,32). Williams leads the American League in batting average and homeruns and is just 2 rbi's behind Chicago's Danny Litwhiler. In the National League Philadelphia continues to hold a slim lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pirates hurler Preacher Roe (17-3, 3.03) remains the big story in the senior circuit. Code:

Boston dealt 26 year old lefthander Warren Spahn (11-9, 3.34) to Cleveland for righthander Steve Gromek (12-6, 3.31). Gromek is 27 years old and coming off his best season, going 26-12 a year ago. With no lefthanded starters on their pitching staff the Indians felt it was a deal worth making despite the fact Gromek has outperformed Spahn slightly at this stage of their careers. The Braves had picked up lefthander Ken Chase (9-11, 4.38) from the Giants for reliever Ed Wright earlier in the week. BRAVES DEAL ROOKIE TORGESON The Braves shocked the baseball world by trading rookie first baseman Earl Torgeson (.249,9,36) to the Cardinals for 29 year old third baseman Whitey Kurowski (.306,4,35). Torgeson had a great start to his rookie season but has really struggled his second time through the league. Other deals of note saw St Louis send pitcher Stan Ferens (9-5, 3.26) to Cincinnati for pitcher Johnny Hutchings (9-10, 4.59). The 32 year old Ferens was 25-12 in 1945 before missing most of last season with a back injury. Hutchings, 31, won 21 games a year ago but has struggled this season. GOLF- JULY ROUNDUP INSURANCE CITY OPEN Britian's Dick Burton built a huge 3 day lead at the Insurance City Open and hung on to defeat a hard charging Ben Hogan by one stroke to capture top spot. After rounds of 69,64,and 66 at the par 70 Edgewood Country Club Burton enjoyed a 7 stroke lead on Hogan and Horton Smith heading into Sunday's play. Hogan, the tour's money leader this season, made it close by gaining five strokes on Burton during the final day but he fell just short of his third straight tournament victory. Most of the golfers now head to Europe for the Irish and British Opens. However, a majority of the amateurs will stay in the United States to prepare for the US Amateur championship which begins at the end of July. The next PGA event on American soil will not be until August 9th when the Colonial Invitational begins in Fort Worth, Texas. Code:

Okay, got all of the boxing matches for June and July simmed so I will post a brief update from each weightclass and then will be ready to resume the day by day articles in a few days.
HEAVYWEIGHTS Attention in the heavyweight division is focused squarely on August 17 when champion Joe Louis puts his perfect 9-0 record on the line against top contender Ezzard Charles (20-1). Charles only loss came against Louis in the post-war tournament title matchup. Charles is looking to avenge the 8th round TKO he suffered on that day. In recent heavyweight action Jersey Joe Walcott earned a third round knockout victory over unranked Pat Valentino while in a matchup between the then 3rd and 4th highest ranked fighters in the division Nathan Mann scored a slim but unanimous decision over Roscoe Toles in Toles hometown of Detroit. Other fights of note saw LeClaire, Iowa's Jeffrey xSmith improve to 2-0 with an unanimous decision over Johnny Shkor. Brooklyn native JT xCampbell scored a 13th round knock out in his match with Carl Nielson of Denmark. German Jurgen xHucke fell to 1-1 after losing a decision to Pennsylvania journeyman Gene Jones (15-15). After nearly knocking out Joe Louis in a heavyweight title shot a year ago things have gotten progressively worse for Tami Mauriello. The latest setback, his fourth since the Louis loss, was a unanimous decision loss to Frenchman Stephane Olek (15-13). Mauriello falls to 16-8-1 and has been badly beaten in each of his four fights since flooring Louis. Code:

Just one bout over the past two months among top 10 fighters. In it 6th ranked Billy Smith won by a 10th round knock out of Melio Bettina, who had been ranked 9th at the time. Other fights saw German Rudel xDietrich fall to 1-1 as a pro after losing a majority decision to a young San Francisco fighter named Dave Whitlock. Whitlock is 3-0 and working his way up the division. Code:

Zale was all over Abrams in the round and while it was clear the challenger was virtually defenseless at the time of the stoppage his corner was incensed because Abrams was clearly winning the fight and needed just to survive the round to claim the title. A few days after the fight both sides agreed to a rematch which will be held in December. In other middleweight bouts of note Artie Towne, ranked 10th at the time scored a second round TKO of Carl Olson who was ranked 7th but now drops out of the top 10. Meanwhile all 3 board member created middleweights suffered losses. Chicago's Rocco xDiSaldo fell to 0-2 after losing an unanimous decision to Belgium born Cyrille Delanoit (26-10-1). Italian Giovanni xRago (0-2) suffered an 11th round TKO loss to Steve Belloise (20-6). Belloise was just coming off a fight where he took former world champion Jake LaMotta the distance before losing by decision. Finally, Charlie Boom-Boom xSmith (1-1) dropped a decision to Milwaukee's Jackie Darthard (8-4). Code:

July 31 boxing update: part 2
WELTERWEIGHTS The big news in this division occurs Friday August 3 when Sugar Ray Robinson and Tommy Bell fight their rematch for Robinson's World title. The two battled to a majority draw in Philadelphia on April 20th. Robinson controlled the fight early and came close to knocking Bell down a couple of times but the challenger came on late and floored the champ in the 12th round. Robinson hung on for the draw. In bouts involving top 10 welterweights, Billy Graham scored a unanimous decision over Marty Servo while Puerto Rico's Cocoa Kid beat Jimmy Doyle in New Haven also by a unanimous decision. Code:
TOP 10 WELTERWEIGHTS 1 Ray Robinson 11-1-1 Harlem, New York 2 Johnny Bratton 22-3-1 Chicago 3 Billy Graham 18-3-2 New York City 4 Jackie Wilson 28-4-1 Los Angeles 5 Bep Van Klaveren 22-9-1 Rotterdam, Netherlands 6 Tommy Bell 27-2-1 Youngstown, Ohio 7 Cocoa Kid 25-3-1 Puerto Rico 8 Marty Servo 29-5-1 New York City 9 Gustav Eder 18-6-1 Dortmund, Germany 10 Bernard Docusen 14-7-2 New Orleans WILLIAMS WINS BATTLE OF UNBEATENS TO RETAIN TITLE World lightweight champion Ike Williams retained his title with an unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Bob Montgomery. The fight was almost dead even for the first 10 rounds before Williams totally dominated the 11th - an unofficial count was 31 scoring blows to 2 in favour of the champ in that round. As the 14th round came to an end Williams scored the only knockdown of the fight when Montgomery dropped to his knees after a violent shot under the ribcage. With the win Williams improves to 20-0 while Montgomery is 10-1. In other action Mario Trigo upset Enrique Bolanos in a rematch for the Mexican Lightweight title. Trigo scored a slim but unanimous victory over Bolanos, who had been rated the 5th best lightweight in the world prior to the bout. In April the two had fought to a 15-round draw which necessitated the rematch. Trigo improves to 14-4-1 and moves into the top 10 in his weight class while Bolanos drops to 14-2-1. Art Aragon moved into the number one contender role with an unanimous decision over Maxie Docusen in Los Angeles. The victory improves Aragon to 14-4-1 and puts him in line for a shot at World Champion Ike Williams. Aragon lost to Williams by a 13th round knock out early in the post-war tournament but since then has beaten top 10 ranked lightweights Mario Trigo and Lulu Constantino. Docusen slips to 7-2 and falls out of the top 10 after a brief stay. Other fights of note saw Edward xDay of England drop to 0-2 after losing a decision to Brooklyn's Allie Stolz. The 28 year old Stolz is 15-3-1 although most of his bouts have been against lower-level fighters. Code:

FEATHERWEIGHTS
A number of fighters in the bottom half of the top 10 were in action over the past couple of months but the big fight in the division is August 11th when undefeated World Champion Willie Pep meets Charlie Riley in the challengers hometown of St Louis. Recent action saw 8th ranked Simon Vegara win by TKO over then 7th ranked Georgie Hansford in Los Angeles. The referee called the fight after a serious cut over Hansford's right eye made it impossible for the boxer to see properly. Chalky Wright looked impressive in beating Pat Iacobucci senseless in their bout. The referee stopped it in the third round after Wright had floored his opponent twice. The victory moved Wright from 9th to 3rd in the rankings. Across the pond Jim Kenny scored an unanimous decision over Frankie Kelly to claim the British Featherweight title. Kenny, who declined to participate in the post-war tournament, improves to 3-0. Kelly loses the British title in his first defense. Code:

Galvani wore down Romero over the course of the first nine rounds and had the champ defenseless as he pummelled him in the 10th. Romero did not drop to the canvas but the referee called the fight when it was clear Romero could not defend himself. Galvani improves to 32-4-1 while Romero's title reign was shortlived. The Spaniard falls to 21-7-1 and loses the belt in his first defense. After beating Fernando Gagnon for the World title Romero was forced to surrender his European belt. The European title was decided when Britian's Johnny King scored an unanimous decision over Italian Guido Ferracin in the final of a 4-fighter elimination tournament. King, 37-6, is not considered one of the top 10 bantamweights in the world. In other action British champion Gus Foran (25-6) looked strong in earning a decision over Australian Elley Bennett. Code:

The victory improves Patterson's record to 21-2 while Gardner falls to 17-3-1. In the only other flyweight bout of note Valentin Angelmann won a majority decision over Honore Pratesi to claim the French title. Code:

Dell says my new cpu should arrive Monday so by Wednesday I expect to have everything back to normal and will recommence the daily reports beginning on August 1st. Among the things we can look forward to is the baseball pennant races heating up: Phillies and Bucs fighting it out in the NL while the Red Sox and Browns try and catch Cleveland in the junior circuit. Individually, Ted Williams seems to have a decent shot at the triple crown while Preacher Roe is chasing a 30-win season. The NFL training camps are underway and week one of the preseason is just a few days off. How will rookie Otto Graham do in Tampa and can anyone stop the Bears are two of the key questions. College football is a month away from it's opening kickoff and the teams to beat look to be Michigan, Notre Dame and Texas. The Irish have a great senior QB in Johnny Lujack while the Longhorns have one of their own in Bobby Layne. As mentioned earlier the boxing action heats up in August with the Sugar Ray Robinson-Tommy Bell rematch and Heavyweight champ Joe Louis meets Ezzard Charles in a rematch of their bout last year when Charles suffered his only post-war loss.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : WEDNESDAY AUGUST 1, 1947
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PIRATES TOP PHILLIES IN NL SHOWDOWN Elmer Valo's rbi single in the top of the ninth inning proved the difference as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Philadelphia 6-5. The victory, the Bucs second straight over the Phils, allows Pittsburgh to creep to within a game and a half of front-running Philadelphia in the National League. Ralph Kiner paced the Pittsburgh attack with 2 hits and 3 rbi's. Buster Adams hit a 3 run homer, his 14th of the season, for Philadelphia. In other National League action: Ed Head tossed a 3-hit complete game and Harlond Clift hit his 19th homer of the season as Chicago blanked Brooklyn 3-0. Head improves to 11-10 with the win. Whitey Kurowski had 3 rbi's to help Boston past the New York Giants 6-4. It was Kurowski's first rbi's for the Braves since being acquired from St Louis last week. Rookie Art Houtteman improved his record to 11-10 as the visiting Cincinnati Reds defeated St Louis 5-4. The front runners in the American League all suffered setbacks yesterday. First place Cleveland was beaten 3-2 in Philadelphia. Chet Laabs hit a 2-out 2-run double in the bottom of the 9th off of Johnny Babich to give the A's the win spoiling an 8 inning, 3 hit performance from Cleveland starter Bill Lohrman. Ralph Hodgin had 3 hits as Chicago dropped second place Boston 7-4. 4 Red Sox errors helped the White Sox build up an early 7-0 lead. In a battle of trade deadline acquisitions Ken Heintzelman outduelled Eddie Lopat in Detroit's 6-3 win over the St Louis Browns. The Tigers had picked up Heintzelman from Pittsburgh for reliever Dewey Adkins while Lopat joined the Browns in a deal with the White Sox. In the other game Washington beat the Yankees 6-1 handing Dizzy Dean (11-11) his third straight loss. Code:

Feller was named the American League pitcher of the month for August after going 5-2 with a 1.72 era. Eight years ago Feller made his major league debut while still a teenager. He went 9-15 as a rookie but was bumped to the bullpen the following season. In 1941, Feller appeared ready to take up permanent residence in the Indians rotation. However, in May of that season he suffered the first of several serious injuries. He did recover by August and was used in the bullpen as the Indians won the World Series. Nursing a sore shoulder, Feller did not pitch in the postseason. In 1942, Feller alternated between the bullpen and the rotation until an August arm injury ended his season. He would make one appearance in 1943, blowing out his arm which sidelined him for over a year. The next 3 seasons would be spent trying to regain his arm strength while pitching in AAA. Injuries during that time would rob him of another 2 months. Feller again seemed destined to spend the 1947 season in the minors but a couple of injuries on the big club earned him another chance in the show. Feller, who fanned 149 in AAA a year ago, seemed revitalized and got off to a great start with Cleveland. So far the 28 year old has remained healthy. If that trend continues Bob Feller may yet have a superstar type career. Code:

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE NFL PRESEASON STARTS TOMORROW The 1947 National Football League season begins tomorrow as the first week of preseason games kick off. The defending champion Chicago Bears take center stage Thursday evening as they host the Miami Dolphins in the day's only contest. However, do not expect to see a lot of Bears QB Sid *Luckman or any of the other regulars. Instead Chicago backup Micah Strickland is slated to take most of the snaps under center. In his 3rd season with the Bears after two years in Tennessee, Strickland has attempted a grand total of 34 passes in his career, including just 1 pass in 2 seasons backing up Luckman. Chicago rookie offensive tackle Tom *Hughes, their first round pick out of Purdue, and 2nd round pick Jim *Keane, a WR from Northwestern, should both see plenty of action. The Dolphins figure they made a major upgrade to both the offensive and defensive lines over the offseason. Former Notre Dame standout OT George *Connor is being counted on to stabilize the offensive front while 2nd round picks Richard *Pricer from Oregon and Ray Apple from Baylor hope to do the same for the defense. The Dolphins finished 6-10 a year ago and missed the playoffs. The battle more closely resembled a street brawl than a prize fight as each fighter was warned numerous times and each lost a point for various infractions. In addition there were 5 knockdowns in the bout, including Kane hitting the canvas on three occassions. Doran should have finished the challenger off in the first round when he had Kane hanging on for dear life after the first knockdown of the night. Doran controlled the first couple of rounds of the fight but dissappeared in the middle rounds and could not recover late. With the victory Kane improves to 18-2-1 and has his eye on world champion Jackie Paterson. Doran drops to 16-4. GOLF PEBBLE BEACH PREPARES FOR US AMATEUR The United States Amateur Golf Championships has reached it's final weekend. 32 golfers will compete in match-play competition beginning today at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Montery, California. Among the competitiors include 3 California natives in Bob Rosberg, John Dawson and Scott Tibbetts. Rosberg and Tibbetts have been especially impressive competing as amateurs on the PGA tour. Defending champion Stanley 'Ted' Bishop has also made the round of 32.

Great Stuff, good idea to speed it up to fall.
Question #1: What can we look for from the Chiefs and Groce this season? Question #2: When does the CFL start up? Thanks |

CFL season will start in late August. I have not found the full 1947 schedule yet.
As for Groce, despite passing for over 3500 yards for the third straight season and taking the Chiefs to the playoffs for the first time, he may be in danger of losing his job to Tommy *Thompson. You may recall *Thompson was drafted 12th overall out of Tulsa last year but missed the entire year after a preseason injury.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : THURSDAY AUGUST 2, 1947
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PIRATES AND RED SOX PRESSURE FRONT-RUNNERS The two second place teams - the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox - each gained a game on the slumping league leaders. Pittsburgh got a homerun from Fern Bell and a complete game, 5-hit shutout from Cliff Melton (12-6, 2.01) as the Bucs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-0. Philadelphia has lost 3 straight to the Pirates and their lead on Pittsburgh is down to just a half game. Meanwhile Earl Johnson 4-hit Chicago as the Red Sox blanked the White Sox 5-0. Ted Williams homered for the third straight game. The Cleveland Indians were beaten 2-1 by the Philadelphia Athletics which allows the Red Sox to move with 3.5 games of the first place Tribe. Roy Cullenbine drove in both A's runs while Fred Caligiuri improved to 13-7 as the A's handed the Indians their fifth straight setback. In other action the St Louis Browns moved to within 4 games of first place after a 6-4 victory in Detroit. In the other American League game the Yankees topped Washington 2-1 in New York. In the National League the Braves scored 6 times in the top of the ninth to beat the Giants 11-8, spoiling a 4-rbi day from Giants rookie catcher Yogi Berra. Augie Galan's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Cubs a 10-9 win over Brooklyn. In the other game Walker Cooper had 4 rbi's as St Louis pounded Cincinnati 8-2. Code:

The Miami Dolphins are hoping a strong showing in Chicago against the champion Bears is just the first step towards erasing the losing attitude that has engulfed the team after three straight sub-.500 seasons. The key for Miami to have a successful season lies on the defensive side of the ball. Consistently among the worst team defenses in the league, the Dolphins hope some key offseason acquisitions will turn things around. The Dolphins have possibly the best young cornerback tandem in the league in 3rd year players Larry Taylor and Jake Braxton and former Bengal safety Jermaine Witcher should add depth to the secondary. OLB Joey Sloan had 5 sacks and was a second team AFC all-star but other LB's Blake Bickett and Tyrone Rayburn lack consistancy. The defensive line was a major weakness although second round picks Richard Pricer and Ray Apple should help. Offensively the Dolphins have one of the best running backs in the game in the form of Stacey Jolley. The 5th year pro from Louisville ran for a career high 1744 yards a year ago. Hugh Vick had 49 catches as a rookie and teamed nicely with veteran wideout Keyuo Kinard who led the team with 79 receptions. At quarterback, the former first round pick from UCLA, Woody Brooks, struggled with interceptions in his sophomore year. If Brooks would make some better decisions the Dolphins offense could rank among the league's best. Tackle is the weak spot on the offensive line although the Dolphins used their first round pick on Notre Dame's George *Connor. Connor may struggle early but does have decent potential. While the Dolphins have their sights set on a 10 win season, a more realistic goal would be to finish at .500. The defense is better but still a long ways from being in the upper half of the league. Offensively, the tackles will not provide Brooks much protection and he has a tough time picking out the right sweater to throw to at the best of times. BOXING BIG WEEKEND FOR WELTERWEIGHT DIVISION This is a busy weekend for the welterweight division with the highlight being Friday's World Championship rematch between Sugar Ray Robinson and Tommy Bell. Robinson, 11-1-1, and Bell, 27-2-1, battled to a 15 round draw in Philadelphia just over 3 months ago. This time they meet at Madison Square Garden with the champ remaining a strong favourite. Tonight the European welterweight title is on the line as Bep Van Klaveren defends his belt in Rotterdam against challenger Felix Wouters. Wouters, who hails from Belgium, is 16-12-3 in post war action. Van Klaveren, at 22-9-1, is rated the 5th best welterweight in the world. GOLF FINAL 16 SET AT US AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS The final four rounds of the 1947 US Amateur Open Golf Tournament are set. Among today's matchups to keep an eye on include Scott xTibbetts of California vs the only Canadian in the final 16, Montreal's Jack xKeeler. Defending champ Stanley 'Ted' Bishop of Norfolk, Massachusetts will tee off against Bucks County, Pennsylvania native William Scarborough III. Here are today's pairings in the 18 hole match-play event: Bob Rosberg (San Francisco, Cal) vs Ed xWhite (Iola, Kan) Jack xKeeler (Montreal, PQ)vs Scott xTibbetts (Mount Rose, Cal) Harry xWhistler (Boston, Mass) vs Mark xDePore (Newark, NJ) Boyd xMartin (Amarillo, Tx) vs Sean xMulvenon (Fayetteville, Ark) William xScarborough III (Bucks County, Pa) vs Stanley 'Ted' Bishop (Norfolk, Mass) John Dawson (Burbank, Cal) vs E Harvie Ward (San Francisco, Cal) Aubry xNehring (Waco, Tx) vs Ray Billows (Racine, Wisc) Charles Coe (Oklahoma City, Okla) vs Rufus King (Dallas, Tx)

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TRUCKS STEERS TIGERS PAST BROWNS 1-0 Virgil Trucks tossed a 5-hit shutout to lead the Detroit Tigers past the St Louis Browns 1-0 in American League action. Trucks, who improves to 9-12 with a 2.78 era on the season, allowed just 1 extra base hit. The Tigers only managed 3 hits off of losing pitcher Bob Muncrief (5-5, 3.61), but scored the game's only run on a 7th inning lead-off double by Red Kress followed by an rbi single from SS Frank Croucher. In other American League action, Dixie Walker hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to life the New York Yankees past Washington 6-5. The Sens had taken the lead in the top of the 10th on a Mel Mazzera rbi single. Bud Byerly got his first win in a Chicago uniform as the White Sox beat Boston 5-1. Byerly (5-7, 5.50), who was acquired from Detroit a couple of weeks ago, went the distance allowing just 5 hits. Rube Melton took the loss to fall to 11-7. Boston outfielder Ted Williams saw his streak of games with a home run end at 3 but he did manage 2 hits in the loss. Just percentage points seperate the top two teams in the National League after the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied to beat Brooklyn 4-3. Bob Elliott's 2 run double in the bottom of the 8th inning proved the difference and made a winner out of reliever Tom Ferrick, who had replaced Preacher Roe in the 8th. The Pirates gained a half game on idle Philadelphia. In other National League contests Boston scored three times in the top of the ninth to tie the game and then beat Cincinnati 6-5 on an 11th inning rbi single off the bat of Whitey Kurowski. Kurowski had 4 hits in the game and is now 8-for-19 with 6 rbi's since being acquired from St Louis for Earl Torgeson. In Chicago Vern Olsen won his 17th game as the Cubs beat New York 6-4. Olsen, 17-6, is tied with Pittsburgh's Preacher Roe for the major league lead in wins. Bill Nicholson's 10th homer of the season aided Olsen's cause. Code:

With the starters on the field, Miami took a 7-3 lead in the first quarter when Woody Brooks connected with second year receiver Hugh Vick on a 16 yard touchdown strike. Brooks was very impressive completing 7 of 9 passes for 83 yards without an interception. Chicago's Sid *Luckman answered with a touchdown pass of his own before the quarter was over and by the time the regulars took the bench for good the score was knotted at 10. Rookie quarterback Quincy Mabry, a 3rd round pick out of Virigina, had a strong debut, completing 13-of-22 for 144 yards including 1 touchdown. The Dolphins led 26-21 when Maby gave way to fellow rookie James Stinchcomb who also played well in engineering the final two touchdown drives. Other bright spots for Miami included the offensive line which did not allow a sack and included a spirited performance from rookie George *Connor. The biggest negative from a Miami perspective was a lackluster effort from the defense which despite the Bears hardly using their first-team at all, was still lit up. The Bears used this first game to give their rookies plenty of opportunities. Most of the starters played just 2 series including QB Sid *Luckman who led Chicago to scores on both of his turns under center, and running back George *McAfee who carried the ball just twice, but did have two catches for 87 yards. Backup cornerback Randell Wrightman made himself noticed. He had an interception, forced a fumble and made 3 tackles. Wrightman has appeared in just 8 games over 3 seasons with the Bears as he has spent most of his career on the practice squad. OTHER NOTES: - Both teams escaped relatively injury free. Dolphins FS Jermaine Witcher suffered a sprained ankle but should be ready to play in a week. Next week Chicago travels to Baltimore while Miami entertains San Diego. Both kickers had a field day. Miami's John McCown made all 4 of his field goal attempts while Arnie Curtis was 3-for-3 for the Bears. Trailing by 2 holes Scarborough birdied both 17 and 18 to draw even before winning it with a par on the first extra-hole after Bishop had bogeyed. In other round of 16 action Bob Rosberg birdied the 17th to beat Ed xWhite by one hole; Scott xTibbetts had a 5 hole lead after 6 and coasted past Jack xKeller 6 and 5; Mark xDePore's birdie on 17 gave him a 1 hole win over Harry xWhistler; Boyd xMartin defeated Sean xMulvenon 3 and 1; E Harvie Ward easily handled a struggling John Dawson 4 and 3; Ray Billows had no trouble beating Aubry xNehring by 6 holes and Charles Coe topped Rufus King 2 and 1. Today's quarterfinal matchups are as follows: Ray Billows (Racine, Wisc) vs William xScarborough III (Bucks County, Pa) Scott xTibbetts (Mount Rose, Cal) vs Mark xDePore (Newark, NJ) E Harvie Ward (San Francisco, Cal) vs Bob Rosberg (San Francisco, Cal) Boyd xMartin (Amarillo, Tx) vs Charles Coe (Oklahoma City, Okla) BOXING WOUTERS WINS EUROPEAN WELTERWEIGHT CROWN BY TKO Felix Wouters was awarded the European Welterweight belt after champion Bep Van Klaveren was forced to stop in the 9th round with a suspected broken hand. The fight had been quite close up to that point and certainly could have gone either way. After the fight Wouters quickly offered a rematch to the 38 year old Van Klaveren but it is unknown if he will decide to try and return from the broken bone or perhaps retire. Wouters is 17-12-3 while Van Klaveren drops to 22-10-1. Tonight, the World Welterweight title is on the line as Sugar Ray Robinson and Tommy Bell meet at Madison Square Garden in a rematch. The two fought to a draw in Philadelphia on April 20th.

BOXING SUGAR RAY SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS WELTERWEIGHT TITLE Sugar Ray Robinson won a split decision victory in his rematch with Tommy Bell at Madison Square Garden last night to retain his World Welterweight crown. This contest was nearly as close as the 15 round majority draw they battled to in Philadelphia 4 months ago. Robinson, who improves to 12-1-1 with the victory, was in trouble numerous times during the fight but always managed to avoid a potential knock out punch from the challenger. The champ took control of the fight after he knocked down Bell in the 10th round. Prior to that point it appeared Bell was winning the fight. However, unlike their April meeting, Bell was unable to score a knockdown against the champ. Bell falls to 27-3-1 with the loss and is ranked 7th in the welterweight division. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PIRATES TAKE OVER TOP SPOT IN NATIONAL LEAGUE The Pittsburgh Pirates have moved a game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies atop the National League standings after the Bucs beat Brooklyn 6-1 while the Phils lost 8-2 in St Louis. Pitcher Dewey Adkins allowed just 4 hits over 7 plus innings to improve his record to 7-11. Adkins also chipped in offensively with 3 hits and an rbi. In St Louis, Philadelphia ace Charley Schanz (16-9, 3.66) failed to survive a 7-run Cardinals outburst in the second inning. Schanz has now lost each of his last 3 starts. Rookie Earl Torgeson had 3 hits including his 10th homer of the season to lead the redbirds. In other National League action Dave Philley's 2-run single in the top of the 10th lifted the New York Giants past Chicago 3-1 while Steve Gromek pitched a complete game 2-hitter as Boston crushed Cincinnati 11-2. Chet Ross drove in 4 runs while Whitey Kurowski had 3 rbi's for the Braves. In the American League Boston moved to within 3 games of front-running Cleveland. Babe Young had 4 hits and drove in 4 runs to power the Red Sox past St Louis 8-3. Andy Karl went the distance for Boston to improve his record to 16-5. Meanwhile in Washington Fred Hutchinson (13-12, 3.64) outduelled Bob Feller (10-6, 2.17) as the Senators topped the Indians 2-1. The only other American League contest saw Detroit score 7 times in the bottom of the 8th inning to hammer New York 9-2. Hal Trosky's grand slam was the big blow of the inning. Code:

After the quick 3 hole deficiet, xMartin finally pulled even with a birdie on 15. The two golfers than each parred the final 3 holes of regulation and the first 13 playoff holes before xMartin finally won the contest with a birdie on the 14th extra hole. xMartin will face E Harvie Ward in one semi-final. Ward beat fellow San Francisco native Bob Rosberg in the quarterfinals 1 up. The other semi-final will pit Mount Rose, California native Scott xTibbetts against William xScarborough III, who hails from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. xTibbetts had little trouble in his quarterfinal match with Mark xDePore winning 7 and 5 after claiming 6 straight holes starting on number 8. xScarborough beat Ray Billows 7 and 5 after the Wisconsin native had 4 bogeys on the front 9. Today's semi-final and tomorrow's final will each be 36 hole competitions. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON SANDUSKY LEADS COWBOYS PAST BUFFALO 21-9 Second year quarterback Avon Sandusky threw for 173 yards and a touchdown as the Dallas Cowboys dumped the Buffalo Bills in NFL preseason action. Sandusky, who started 1 game as a rookie last year, teamed with rookie RB Johnny *Clement to guide the Cowboys to two second quarter majors. *Clement, a third round pick from SMU, ran for a game high 68 yards. The Cowboys did not get much of an effort out of first overall pick George *Savitsky. The former University of Pennsylvania DE played the entire first quarter but did not register a tackle or put any pressure on the Bills QB's. Buffalo could never mount much of an offensive attack, although rookie QB DeMarco Dickinson, a 3rd round pick from North Carolina, looked very good in the one series he played. Dickinson completed 3 of 5 passes for 47 yards. The Bills first round pick, ex-Army TE Hank Foldberg had 1 reception for 2 yards in the game. Bills starting SS Stephen Whitehead suffered an elbow injury and is questionable for next week. In the only other game last night New Orleans topped Pittsburgh 28-25. Undrafted free agent rookie Steve Riggins was the most impressive player on the field, completing 9 of 12 passes for 180 and a pair of New Orleans touchdowns in the second half. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL LOHRMAN IMPROVES TO 11-1 Imagine what kind of season Bill Lohrman would be having had he not missed 6 weeks with an elbow injury. Lohrman ran his record to 11-1 and lowered his major league best era to 1.25 as the Cleveland Indians dumped Washington 7-1. The victory, coupled with Boston's 6-5 extra-inning loss in St Louis, allowed the Indians to increase their lead on the Red Sox atop the American League to 4 games. The Bosox scored three runs in the top of the 9th to tie the Browns but St Louis pulled out the win on a Vic Wertz rbi single in the 12th. In the only other American League contest Detroit topped New York 2-1. Dizzy Dean, who started the season 5-0, took his 4th straight loss despite allowing just 4 Detroit hits in the game. Dean's era is 2.63 but his record now sits at 11-12 due to a terrible lack of run support from Yankee hitters. To make matters worse for the veteran hurler, Dean suffered an injury in the 9th inning and will likely be sidelined a month. The front runners in the National League both lost so Pittsburgh's lead on the Philadelphia Phillies still sits at 1 game. Ben Chapman's 2-run single in the bottom of the second accounted for all the offense St Louis would need as the Cardinals topped the Phillies 2-1. The Pirates lost 3-1 in Brooklyn as Bucs rookie hurler Vic Raschi saw his record fall to 4-11. In other National League action pinch-hitter Joe Marty's 2 run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the Cubs a 6-5 win over the New York Giants. In Cincinnati Jesse Flores pitched innings of 2-hit ball and delivered a pair of rbi's to lead the visiting Boston Braves past the Reds 4-1. Code:

Pebble Beach in scenic Montery, California will host the 36 final between San Francisco native E Harvie Ward and Scott xTibbetts, who hails from Mount Rose, California. Ward reached the final after winning a tight 36-hole semi-final match over Boyd xMartin of Amarillo, Texas. Neither golfer ever led by more than two holes and they were tied heading into the 36th and final hole of regulation. Ward managed a par on that hole and advanced when xMartin was forced to settle for bogey. Eariler in the week Ward had defeated a pair of fellow California's: Bob Rosberg in the quarterfinals and John Dawson in the round of 16. xTibbetts birdied the 36th hole of his match with Bucks County, Pennsylvania golfer William xScarborough III to give him a 2 hole margin of victory. xScarborough was up 2 after the first 18 but xTibbetts turned the tables by winning 4 of the next 9 holes. In the quarterfinals xTibbetts defeated Mark xDePore of New Jersey after disposing of Montreal native Jack xKeeler in the round of 16. The finals will be a 36 hole contest. If they are tied after 36 an additional 18 holes will be played on Monday. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON BUCS WIN IN OVERTIME AS OTTO *GRAHAM MAKES PRO DEBUT The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated New England 30-27 but the big story was the NFL debut of Bucs quarterback Otto *Graham. The former two sport star at Northwestern led the Bucs to touchdowns on both of his possessions including a 21 yard td strike he threw to reserve tight end Spec Rolle. Graham completed 8 of 13 passes for 95 yards. The Bucs presently list Graham as the backup to Paul *Christman but it remains to be seen how long that will last. Christman, undrafted in 1945 started 6 games for Tampa a year ago. He completed 4 of 8 passes in yesterday's game. A big area of concern for the Bucs was the play of their offensive line, which gave up 5 quarterback sacks and numerous pressures. In addition to Graham, second round pick Len *Ford had a strong game for the Bucs. The former Michigan defensive end had 3 tackles and a sack. All 3 New England quarterbacks used in the game looked very good. Starter Bob Irvin completed 7 of 9 passes before giving way to backup Terry Stephens. Stephens completed 13 of 16 for a game high 156 yards. 3rd stringer Dwaye Chelbak was also solid but his intercepted pass led to a Tampa score that forced overtime. The New England defense, particularily the backups, had a terrible game. First round pick Tom Morris, a CB from BYU, struggled in his pro debut. LIONS DEFENSE TO MUCH FOR BROWNS Either the Lions defense is unstoppable or the the Browns have the worst offense in the league as Detroit held Cleveland to just 3 first downs in a 13-0 victory. Cleveland managed just 98 net yards of offense and the Browns looked lost no matter who was under center. Last season Bob Slaughter, Jeff McDonald and Charley Carpenter split the QB duties in Cleveland and the job is wide open for the three of them to fight over this year. It appeared yesterday as if none of them wanted it. The defense is strong but without a solid quarterback or a decent running attack Cleveland could be hard pressed to reach the playoffs a year after they went to the league championship game. Seven different Detroit Lions including first round pick DE Elmer *Mader recorded a sack in the game. The only touchdown of the game came on a first quarter run from Lions starting HB Fred Johnson. QB Bob *Waterfield completed 7 of 9 passes for 80 years. MUSSO LEADS JAGS PAST EAGLES 27-3 Veteran RB Keith Musso, in a battle to keep his starting job, caught a touchdown pass and ran for a second score as Jacksonville thumped the Philadelphia Eagles 27-3. Musso, who was league Offensive MVP in 1942, gained 60 yards on 14 carries. He is fighting with 3rd year man Reggie Chancey for the starting job. Chancey, who started 5 games a year ago when Musso was hurt, gained 38 yards on 10 carries. In addition to RB, the starting QB job is wide open in Jacksonville. Tommy Bledsoe, who has the inside track, completed 6 of 7 passes for 56 yards. Ex-Cincinnati backup Doug Clarke completed 7 of 14 for 93 yards and a touchdown while longtime Jags third stringer Bernie Burrow completed 3 of 4 passes. Fourth round pick Arnold *Tucker is also in the mix. The former Army star did not play in the opener. Backup cornerback Harry McGraw had 2 interceptions for the Jags, including one he returned 14 yards for a touchdown. First round pick John Podesto, a cornerback from Pacific, had a decent game. 15 year veteran Vaughn Diedrick, signed by the Eagles from Houston in the offseason, was booed in his Philadelphia debut after throwing 3 interceptions. The Eagles inked Diedrick to provide an experienced backup behind Doug Bass but after a terrible season last year with the Texans, many felt Diedrick's career was over. TEXANS BLANK VIKINGS 21-0 The post Vaughn Diedrick era in Houston got off to a great start. The only man to ever start a regular season game for the Texans in their 6 year career was released over the winter after enduring the worst season of his career. E.G. Atoe, Diedrick's back-up all that time, is the new starter and he looked okay in his debut, completing 6 of 10 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in a 21-0 whitewashing of Minnesota. Atoe's best weapon was reserve RB Gus Barton. The 4th year pro from the University of Texas ran for 59 yards and a touchdown while also leading the Texans with 6 receptions. Rookie linebackers Bob *Ravensberg and Joe Highsmith have starting jobs that are their's to lose. Each looked good in his debut but 5th round pick Randy Flute stole the show. The DT from Arizona had 2 sacks and 3 tackles in the game. Rookie Vikings QB Paul *Governali had a rough debut. The Vikings may have to rethink their plans of letting him start in week one after the 7th overall pick from Columbia was awful in his debut. Sacked twice, Governali completed just one out of 4 pass attempts and it was a screen pass that went for a 15 yard loss. SEWELL LIFTS COLTS TO VICTORY Rookie quarterback Pete Sewell has served notice he wants the starting job with the Indianapolis Colts. The former Stanford signal caller, a third round pick, completed 16 of 20 passes for 308 yards and 4 touchdowns as Indianapolis crushed Green Bay 45-10. Imagine what he could have done had he played more than 2 quarters. The Colts signed free agent QB Eric Poppinga from the Giants with the plan he would be the starter this season. Poppinga completed 6 of 9 passes for 60 yards. The Packers led 7-0 when the starters came out after the first quarter, thanks to a decent effort from QB Jordan Montana. Montana had split the QB duties with Cecil *Isbell last season but the job is his after Isbell's contract was not picked up during the offseason. BENGALS CLAW GIANTS 24-10 Robert Strahan ran for 101 yards but it wasn't enough as his New York Giants ended up on the short end of a 24-10 score against the Cincinnati Bengals. Each of the three Cincinnati quarterbacks threw a touchdown pass including veteran starter Bud Rutledge. Bothered by injuries last season, Rutledge is facing competition for his job from backup Ken Smith. Both looked good in the opener. With Eric Poppinga gone to Indianapolis, the Giants QB job is wide open. Joey Martin completed 8 of 10 passes to get the inside track on the job ahead of second round pick Harry *Gilmer. The former Alabama signal caller completed just 1 pass in his debut.
