MLB news: Oct. 2 -- Yankees wrap up American League East title

The New York Yankees have clinched the American League East Division title following an 8-5 win over Baltimore on Oct. 2.
The victory put the Yankees eight games ahead of second-place Tampa Bay with seven games left in the season.
It is the seventh consecutive season New York has advanced to the postseason.
At 92-63, the Yankees trail Houston by three games for the best record in the American League.

MLB news: Oct. 2 -- Atlanta sews up another NL East crown

The Atlanta Braves will advance into the postseason as a division champion after a 12-0 loss by the Philadelphia Phillies on Oct. 1 allowed them to clinch the National League East.
The Braves (95-61) lead the New York Mets by seven games and the Phillies by 7.5 with six games left in the regular season.
It is the sixth consecutive season the Braves have reached the playoffs.
They are assured of being the No. 2 seed in the NL playoffs, as the Dodgers (108-48) have already clinched the top spot.

The game between the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals scheduled for Oct. 3 has been postponed by bad weather.
The contest will be made up as a doubleheader on Oct. 4, the final two home games of the regular season for St. Louis.
The Cardinals lead the Brewers by 3.5 games in the National League Central Division with five games left in their season.
Milwaukee still has six games left on its schedule.

Despite having their Oct. 3 game against Milwaukee postponed by rain, the St. Louis Cardinals are guaranteed a place in the National League playoffs after the Cincinnati Reds lost to the the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Tuesday.
At 85-72, St. Louis owns a 3.5-lead game over Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central Division -- it leads the Reds by 5.5 -- and have a magic number of three to clinch the division title with six games remaining.
Their most likely opponent, the Brewers who at 81-75 lead Cincinnati by two games and San Diego by five for the final wild-card spot.
St. Louis and Milwaukee will complete a three-game series with a doubleheader today at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado hit a two-run home run with one-out in the bottom of the 10th inning off Milwaukee relief pitcher Jake Cousins to give his team a 6-5 win and clinch the National League Central championship.
The victory pushed the Cardinals record to 87-72 and put them 5.5-games ahead of the second-place Brewers with three games left in the season.
The playoff appearance will be the fifth in a row for St. Louis.

MLB news: Oct. 5 -- Kansas City clinches American League Central Division title

The Kansas City Royals sewed up the top spot in the American League Central Division with a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians.
At 89-70, the Royals owns a four-game lead over the second-place Tribe with three games left in the season.
The postseason appearance will be the first for KC since 2016, when they made the second of back-to-back World Series appearances winning the title that season.

MLB news: Oct. 7 -- Angels sew up berth in postseason

The Los Angeles Angels clinched a wild-card berth in the American League playoffs with a 4-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Oct. 7.
The Angels (88-72), who sit in second place behind the Houston Astros in the American League West Division, sit two games ahead of Cleveland and Tampa Bay in the wild-card race with two games left in the season.
It is the first postseason berth for the Angels since the 2014 season.

MLB news: Oct. 9 -- Brewers clinch final NL Wild-Card berth

Despite dropping their regular-season finale 6-2 to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Milwaukee Brewers earned the final National League Wild-Card berth after the Cincinnati Reds fell 4-1 to the Pittsburgh Pirates in their final game of the regular season the previous day.
The Brewers game against Pittsburgh was a makeup of a contest which had been postponed earlier in the season.
Milwaukee finished the regular season with an 83-79 record, one-game better than Cincinnati.
The Brewers will open a three-game division series against the National League Central Division champion St. Louis Cardinals on Oct. 11 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
The Cardinals won their division with an 89-73 record, putting them six-games ahead of the second-place Brewers.
The other NL division series will pit a pair of NL Eastern Division teams, with the New York Mets (92-70) hosting the Philadelphia Phillies (88-74) in Game 1 on Oct. 11.

MLB news: Oct. 9 -- Indians and Rays both collect Wild-Card berths

The Cleveland Indians and Tampa Bay Rays both earned berths in the upcoming postseason by sewing up wild-card berths on the regular-season's final day.
A 6-5 win in 10 innings over the Kansas City Royals punched the Indians ticket.
Cleveland finished the regular season with an 88-74 record, second best among the Amercian League wild-card teams.
The Indians finished one game behind Kansas City in the AL Central Division.
Cleveland will face the Los Angeles Angels, the top-seeded wild card in the opening round.
The Angels finished the season 90-72.
A 4-1 win over Toronto put Tampa Bay in the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.
The Rays will take an 88-74 mark into a first-round series against Kansas City (89-73), which took the AL Central by a single game over Cleveland.
