Today is Marco Gonzalez' 28th birthday! The latest results of the All-Star balloting have been released and, for the first time ever, a Jacksonville Jay is on the list! SS Bart Daw (30-R) is currently 3rd in the voting at shortstop! We also got our first trade offer of the Deadline season, but it was not for P Manny Martinez (30-R), as we had hoped, but for 3B Brian Porter (34-S). Columbus wants him and offers a non-hitting OF with personality issues and a minor league SS, who is the #189 prospect. We pass.... Hartford Whalers (25-35 .417 11 GB in 8th (last) place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (29-33 .468 9 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division) HART: Dennis Lockamy (35-R) (2-3 3.41 ERA 63.1 IP, 52 H, 3 HR, 35 BB, 43 SO) vs. JAX: Marco Gonzalez (27-R) (0-3 6.75 ERA 18.2 IP, 22 H, 3 HR, 4 BB, 5 SO) Lockamy was 7-9 with a 3.57 ERA in 23 starts and 151.1 IP last year. He was 1-1 in 2 starts against us with a 1.54 ERA. 11.2 IP, 5 H, 1 HR, 1 BB, 6 SO. We have never faced him. He has not allowed more than 2 runs in 7 straight starts, but is only 2-1. Gonzalez pitched 6 decent innings last time out, but unfortunately we left him in there for the 7th... He wen 6.1 innings, allowed 5 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts in a loss. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) HARTFORD 1: CF Mike Fox (23-L .275-247-4-21-.732-15 B) 2: 1B Chuck Kellogg (30-R .230-61-0-6-.573-0 B+) 3: RF Robbie McFarland (24-L .233-129-2-12-.652-0 B) 4: C Mike Moen (31-R .347-121-3-20-.941-1 D) All-Star 5: 2B Charlie Mackey (27-R .290-145-6-27-.902-11 B) 6: 3B Eric Drake (28-S .215-195-1-16-.602-5 B+) 7: LF Norm Mayer (26-L .224-58-0-6-.596-2 A+) 8: SS Raul Parez (33-L .203-192-3-21-.550-3 B) 9: P Dennis Lockamy (35-L .056-18-0-0-.206-0 F) JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Cal Doty (25-L .282-117-2-10-.744-12 C+) 2: 2B Leander Gooding (31-R .262-221-1-19-.628-12 B+) 3: RF Glen Lewis (21-L .297-209-6-31-.826-13 C) Rookie 4: 3B Marty Eades (31-R .347-75-2-15-.982-1 C+) 5: LF Brian Porter (34-S .302-126-3-17-.846-0 C) 6: C Bert Swope (30-S .260-100-2-8-.694-1 B) 7: 1B Jack Washburn (20-L .313-48-3-9-.970-3 B) Rookie 8: SS Bart Daw (30-R .238-172-2-18-.642-7 A) 9: P Dalton Hartman (25-R .333-6-0-1-.833-0 F) Game Start: 2:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 80 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing out to right Attendance: 9,005 Top of the First: Mike Fox lines a hit to center... Top of the Fifth: On the Hill: Roger Wallace (26-R), after a perfect 4th. P Dennis Lockamy doubles to left... But the next three all make outs! Bottom of the Fifth: Jack Washburn swings at the first pitch and doubles to right center! Bart Daw skies one to center, but Mike Fox drops the ball for an error! P Roger Wallace is allowed to hit and we call for a suicide squeeze and Wallace misses the bunt and Washburn is tagged out... Top of the Sixth: Of course, after letting him hit, P Roger Wallace promptly gives up hits to Mike Moen and Charlie Mackey. The Bullpen gets up. But the next three all make outs!! Bottom of the Sixth: Leander Gooding takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Glen Lewis doubles to right! They walk Marty Eades intentionally to load the bases up with no outs. Brian Porter grounds into a force at home, 4-2. Bert Swope swings at a 3-2 pitch and pokes a hit to center and Gooding scores! 1 to 0, Jays! Jack Washburn, does not hit a Grand Slam, as I was day dreaming, but draws a walk to force in a run! 2 to 0, Jays! Bart Daw walks in 4 pitches to force in another run! 3 to 0, Jays! P Roger Wallace is NOT allowed to hit this time. PH Tony Becerra (33-L) flies out to right and the runners hold... Cal Doty grounds out to 2nd... Bottom of the Eighth: On the Hill: Erik Salyer (25-R), a rookie received in a trade with Buffalo in March, after a scoreless 7th. Bert Swope takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Jack Washburn grounds one to 2nd, but Charlie Mackey makes an errant throw to 2nd! Bart Daw grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Swope goes to 3rd. PH Ed Diskin (38-R), the only man left on the bench besides C Garrett Bender, lines a hit to center and Swope scores! 4 to 0, Jays! Cal Doty swings at the first pitch and clears the bases with a double to left!! 6 to 0, Jays! That does it for P Salyer. New Pitcher: Edwin Torres (28-L), with a 3.56 ERA in 30.1 IP. Leander Gooding swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines out to 3rd and they double Doty off at 2nd... Top of the Ninth: New Pitcher: Jim Kenzy (34-R), the last fresh arm in the Pen. Norm Mayer grounds a double over the 1st base bag... P Kenzy balks Mayer to 3rd... Raul Perez grounds a hit to left and Mayer scores... 6 to 1, Jays. With 1 out, Mike Fox grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6. Chuck Kellogg grounds a double down the right field line... The Bullpen (Bill Grant) gets up. Robbie McFarland lines out to right and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays! Won - 6 to 1 Sweep! The first time we have ever swept a 4 game series! 8 wins in a row! From May 9 to June 9, we have gone 20-9!!!!!!! Unbelievable! 20 up and only 9 down! Monday Morning Report Player of the Week - Rafael Jimenez, LF, Memphis (28-L .320/.371/.558) Had 9 hits (13 AB), 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 BB, 1 SO, 1 SB, 0 CS, 3 R and 6 RBI in 4 G (3 GS) (Slash lines are for the season, not the week) June 7 - Indianapolis lost All-Star/Gold Glove 1B Bill Jacobson (24-R) for 3 to 4 weeks with a separated shoulder. He was hitting .320 with 8 HR and 42 RBI in 225 AB with an .848 OPS. June 7 - Bruce Conway (31-L) of Louisville pitched 9 shutout innings of 1 hit ball at home versus Rochester, but that was not enough to get a win because Steve Weston (26-L) held the Colonels scoreless through 9 innings on 2 hits. Conway gave way to Steve Dockery (25-R), who set the Roosters down in order in the 10th. Weston kept pitching, but with 2 outs, 2B Ron Lerche (23-R) hit a home run to end the game and give the Colonels a 1 to 0 win. June 7 - Orlando was pummeled in more ways than one by Providence when they lost at home to the Steamrollers, 12 to 7. Their #1 starter, Clark Davis (24-R) hurt his elbow and will miss a month and their #1 hitter, All-Star Gil Weaver (24-L) will miss 3 to 4 weeks with a muscle pull. Weaver was 4 for 4 with a home run in the game. June 8 - Rookie Larry King (26-L) of New Orleans, in his Major League debut, pitched a 10 inning, 1 hit shutout at home versus Buffalo, the top scoring team in the League. He walked 3 and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit. The Pelicans won, 1 to 0, and only had 5 hits themselves. CF Victor Ocasio (26-R) led off the bottom of the 10th with a home run to win the game. June 9 - Victor Espinoza (37-R) of New Orleans pitched a 4 hit shutout at home versus Buffalo. He did not walk a batter and struck out 8. It is his 3rd shutout of the season, tying him for the League lead. He is now 9-3 with a 2.52 ERA in 14 starts for a last place team. The Pelicans won, 1 to 0. |

We need a spot starter for today, as it is Jim Baucom's day to go, but since he threw 137 pitches last time out, we want to give him an extra day off. No need to overtax that 20 year old wing. So we sent Ed Diskin (38-R) to Daytona (A) and called up Manny Martinez (30-R). Hopefully he can make one start without killing himself... He has not pitched in a month, so we expect this to get ugly... The 1st place Charlotte Hornets are here to play a short 2 game set, just long enough to end our winning streak. They just split 4 games in Syracuse in a likely preview of the upcoming Millennial Cup. We are 0-5 against them on the season and were swept in 3 games the last time they were here, April 30 - May 1. We were outscored, 14 to 4, in those 3 games. They are 7th in scoring with 4.22 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.83). The Hornets are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.46 per game (Jacksonville is up to #5 with 3.87!). Our pitching does not seem that good to me and should be do for an ERA correction... Their run differential is +48, the best in the League, and our is -3. -3! Oh, to be able to win this game by 3 runs! Charlotte Hornets (38-25 .603 2.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (30-33 .476 8 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division) CHAR: Jack Brown (26-R) (4-5 4.73 ERA 70.1 IP, 70 H, 7 HR, 32 BB, 45 SO) vs. JAX: Manny Martinez (30-R) (1-3 5.22 ERA 39.2 IP, 46 H, 6 HR, 8 BB, 22 SO) Brown was 14-13 with a 3.62 ERA in 209 IP last year. He was 1-1 in 3 starts against us with a 2.70 ERA. 20 IP, 21 H, 0 HR, 9 BB, 12 SO. He is 3-1 in his last 4 starts, including a 2 hit shutout. We have not faced him this season. Martinez' last start was on May 11 and he only went 2 innings before having to leave with an injury. But that was long enough for him to give up 4 hits and 2 home runs, though we ended up winning the game. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) CHARLOTTE 1: SS Marty Derringer (24-R .247-150-2-16-.611-4 B+) 2: RF Jimmy Reed (24-R .500-12-0-0-1.038-2 B+) Rookie #43 prospect 3: 3B Larry Davis (27-S .324-262-1-30-.792-12 B) Silver Slugger/All-Star 4: 2B Terry Wolf (30-L .289-180-5-26-.794-0 B) 5: 1B Bruce McArthur (25-L .273-216-2-32-.712-0 A+) 6: CF Terry Graham (22-L .261-165-3-18-.767-0 B) Rookie #14 prospect 7: LF Gabe Valdez (30-R .254-118-3-18-.732-0 A+) 8: C Alex Martinez (27-R .247-81-0-6-.638-0 B+) 9: P Jack Brown (26-R .333-18-0-5-.794-0 B+) JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Cal Doty (25-L .287-122-2-12-.763-12 C+) 2: 1B Jack Washburn (20-L .333-51-3-10-1.020-4 B) Rookie 3: LF Glen Lewis (21-L .299-211-6-31-.838-14 C+) Rookie 4: 3B Marty Eades (31-R .338-77-2-15-.971-1 C+) 5: C Bert Swope (30-S .272-103-2-9-.718-1 B) 6: RF Rob Worms (29-R .211-171-5-17-.651-14 A) Gold Glove 7: SS Bart Daw (30-R .234-175-2-19-.635-7 A) 8: 2B Charlie Faber (31-R .190-58-0-1-.540-0 A) 9: P Manny Martinez (30-R .250-12-0-1-.583-0 F) Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 84 F, Partly Cloudy, with an 8 MPH wind blowing out to right Attendance: 7,767 Top of the First: Marty Derringer swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses! Jimmy Reed doubles to right center... Larry Davis grounds out to short. Terry Wolf grounds out to short! Bottom of the First: Cal Doty beats out an infield hit! Jack Washburn grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Glen Lewis lines a hit to center and Washburn heads to 3rd, but the ball beats him by a mile and he gets caught in a rundown and is out, 8-5-4-6... Lewis does NOT take 2nd.... But he steals it! Marty Eades swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds one to 3rd, but Larry Davis boots it! Bert Swope swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, 3-1.... Top of the Third: With 1 out, Marty Derringer triples high off the wall in right center... With the infield in, Jimmy Reed, who is now batting over .500 in his young career, grounds one hard to the right side, but Charlie Faber makes a diving stop and throws him out and Derringer holds at 3rd! Larry Davis lines a hit to right and Derringer scores... 1 to 0, Hornets. Terry Wolf pops out to center. When P Manny Martinez comes in to the dugout, he goes to see Trudy the Trainer... The Bullpen is already spent from yesterday, when Dalton Hartman left the game early.... Bottom of the Third: Cal Doty swings at the first pitch and pokes a hit to center. Jack Washburn who just loves to bunt, bunts Doty to 2nd. Glen Lewis triples to center and Doty scores! Tie Game: 1 to 1! Good thing we bunted Doty to scoring position.... Marty Eades flies out to near the warning track in right center and Lewis trots home. 2 to 1, Jays! Top of the Fourth: New Pitcher: Jim Kenzy (34-R). Bruce McArthur doubles to center... The Bullpen gets back up. With 2 outs, we walk the light hitting backup catcher, Alex Martinez, to face P Jack Brown, who was batting .333 coming into the game.... P Brown grounds out to 3rd!! The Hornets load the bases up with 2 outs in the 5th, but P Jim Kenzy gets Terry Graham to ground out to 1st. And then he comes to the dugout and goes to see Trudy.... Top of the Seventh: On the Hill: Tug Jackson (33-R), after a scoreless 6th. Jimmy Reed bloops a hit over the 2nd baseman... Larry Davis grounds a double play ball to short, but Bart Daw makes a bad throw to 2nd for an error... You do not get many chances to get Larry Davis out and you cannot waste them! The Bullpen (Bill Grant) is up. But the next three make outs with 2 strikeouts! Bottom of the Eighth: New Pitcher: Larry Durbin (35-R), who was their closer before their recent trade. He is 4-1 with 9 SV and a 3.35 ERA in 48.1 IP. That's a lot of inning for a reliever this early in the season, on pace for 124. Cal Doty swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit up the middle. Jack Washburn, who loves to bunt, lays one down and beats it out for a hit! Glen Lewis grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and Doty goes to 3rd. Lewis steals 2nd, so they walk Marty Eades intentionally to load the bases up with 1 out. Bert Swope flies out to center and Doty tags up and beats the throw home. 3 to 1, Jays! Top of the Ninth: On the Hill: Bill Grant (31-L), after a perfect 8th. There is no one else, except maybe a starter... Top of their order up. Marty Derringer pops out to left. Jimmy Reed grounds out to 3rd! Larry Davis grounds out to the pitcher and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays! Won - 3 to 1 9 wins in a row! Who needs starting pitchers? Two games in a row that our Bullpen has had to shoulder most of the load... We could sure use another CG from Jim Baucom tomorrow.... We get a day off after tomorrow, which will be welcome, to say the least. Manny Martinez went 3 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. RHP Jim Kenzy (W 4-2) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 3 hits and 3 walks (1 INT). RHP Tug Jackson (H 6) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits and struck out 2. LHP Bill Grant (SV 8) went pitched 2 perfect innings. 3 Saves in the last 5 days. Jack Brown (L 4-6) went 7 innings, gave us 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Cal Doty had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. LF Glen Lewis had 2 hits with a triple, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Charlie Faber had a hit and a walk. Trudy's report on Manny Martinez is a sore back and he should be fine in a day or two. Until the next sore thing, anyway. Jim Kenzy has a herniated disc and she expects him to be sidelined for a week. Well, it will be 15 days, because we cannot go shorthanded for a week. |

Bottom of the Third: Bart Daw grounds one over the 1st base bag and ends up with a triple! P Jim Baucom grounds a hit to left and Daw scores! 4 to 1, Hornets. But that is all we get. Lost - 4 to 1 We had 6 hits and made 1 error Charlotte had 6 hits and made no errors The winning streak is done after 9 games. Only 2 more days until the Trading Deadline and still no offers for P Manny Martinez (30-R). The New Orleans Pelicans are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They split a pair of games in Memphis on Monday and Tuesday. We are 1-3 against them on the season and this is their first trip to Jacksonville. They are last in scoring with 3.38 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.77). Their team OPS is only .622, even worse than ours was last year (.640). This year ours is at .673, 12th in the League. The Pelicans are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.86 per game (Jacksonville us #5 with 3.83). Trade Deadline is here and we did not get an offer for P Manny Martinez (30-R), so we will let him pitch the rest of the season for us, or as much of it as he can, and try again to trade him this Winter. We currently have 6 starting pitchers on the roster, but I cannot send any of them down because they have all done decently of late. Marco Gonzalez (27-R) is the obvious choice, but he pitched a shutout in his last start! So we will keep a 6 man rotation for just a bit, until one of the candidates for demotion (Gonzalez or Dalton Hartman (25-R)) gets shelled, or Manny Martinez goes back on the DL. New Orleans Pelicans (24-42 .364 14.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (33-34 .493 6 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division) NO: Bill Colby (30-R) (2-8 3.41 ERA 92.1 IP, 99 H, 7 HR, 28 BB, 36 SO) vs. JAX: Manny Martinez (30-R) 1-3 5.06 ERA 42.2 IP, 49 H, 6 HR, 9 BB, 25 SO) Colby led the League with 21 Losses last year and is tied for the League lead again this season, but one of his two wins this year came against us in May. He gave us 2 runs on 12 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts in 8.1 innings. Martinez went 3 innings last time out, before an injury waylaid him. He gave up 1 run on 3 hits and a walk with 3 strikeouts in a no decision that we won. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) NEW ORLEANS 1: LF Omar Camacho (30-L .275-69-1-8-.727-2 B+) 2: CF Victor Ocasio (26-R .219-247-4-16-.630-13 B+) 3: 1B Jerry Rafanello (31-S .304-240-6-23-.784-0 D) All-Star 4: RF Tim Dawson (25-R .314-185-4-27-.802-4 B+) 5: C Niel Williams (26-R .182-192-2-17-.530-0 B) 6: 3B Chuck Corrigan (26-R .241-220-1-18-.576-0 A) 7: 2B Mike Akins (34-R .258-66-1-9-.653-0 B) 8: SS Ron Taylor (30-S .250-80-0-8-.591-9 A) 9: P Bill Colby (30-R .115-26-0-0-.269-0 C) JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Frank Wendell (34-R .284-67-1-8-.677-2 C+) 2: 2B Leander Gooding (31-R .261-238-1-21-.626-13 B+) 3: LF Glen Lewis (21-L .304-224-6-36-.859-16 C+) Rookie 4: 3B Marty Eades (31-R .345-87-2-18-.970-1 C+) 5: 1B Jack Washburn (20-L .344-64-3-10-.985-5 B) Rookie 6: RF Rob Worms (29-R .204-181-5-17-.634-14 A) Gold Glove 7: SS Bart Daw (30-R .228-184-2-19-.627-7 A) 8: C Garrett Bender (28-R .236-157-1-14-.579-0 B) 9: P Manny Martinez (30-R .231-13-0-1-.538-0 F) Game Start: 2:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 83 F, Overcast, with a 7 MPH wind blowing out to right Attendance: 10,939 The largest crowd since Opening Day! Top of the First: Omar Camacho takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Victor Ocasio plunks one in front of the plate and we get the force at 2nd, 2-6. Ocasio steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Garrett Bender throws the ball into center... Jerry Rafanello grounds one to the right side and 1B Jack Washburn makes a diving stop and gets up and taps the bag and Ocasio stays put at 3rd! Tim Dawson strikes out! Bottom of the First: Frank Wendell grounds out to 2nd. Leander Gooding grounds a hit up the middle. Glen Lewis fouls out to the catcher... Gooding gets caught stealing.... Top of the Second: Niel Williams swings at the first pitch and doubles to center.... In all my thoughts about a decision regarding P Manny Martinez, I have been working under the assumption that he was still a good pitcher, just very prone to injury. But what if he is not a good pitcher anymore? If he gets shelled today by this lineup of 7 bums and 2 hitters, we will trade him for whatever we can get before the midnight deadline tonight... Chuck Corrigan doubles to left and and Williams scores... 1 to 0, Pelicans. With 2 outs, P Bill Colby lines a hit to center... Omar Camacho swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses! Bottom of the Second: Marty Eades doubles to right center! Jack Washburn swings at the first pitch and beats out an infield hit! Rob Worms gets beaned and the bases are loaded with no outs! Bart Daw grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Eades scores. Tie Game: 1 to 1. 2B Mike Akins is hurt. Benito Abonza (30-S) is in to play short and Ron Taylor moves to 2nd. Daw tries to steal, but they have a pitchout on and he is out... Garrett Bender pokes a hit to center and Washburn scores! 2 to 1, Jays! Bottom of the Third: With 1 out, Leander Gooding takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Glen Lewis hits a home run to right!! 4 to 1, Jays! Bottom of the Fourth: Bart Daw and Garrett Bender lead off with back to back hits. P Manny Martinez lays down a bunt, but 1B Jerry Rafanello makes a bad toss to 1st for an error and the bases are loaded with no outs! Frank Wendell grounds into a force at home, 5-2. Leander Gooding pokes a hit to center and Bender scores! 5 to 1, Jays! That does it for P Bill Colby. New Pitcher: Francisco Sotelo (30-L), who faced 1 batter yesterday and got him out. Glen Lewis doubles to left and 2 runs score!! 7 to 1, Jays! Oh! If we can win this game, today will be the happiest day of my life as a Jay! Marty Eades strikes out... Jack Washburn pops out to right. Bottom of the Sixth: Frank Wendell pops one up to 2nd, but Ron Taylor drops it for an error! His second error of the year at 2nd and his second this series! With 1 out, Glen Lewis grounds a hit to right and Wendell goes to 3rd. Marty Eades flies out to deep right and Wendell trots home. 8 to 1, Jays! Top of the Seventh: Benito Abonza lines a double to right center. Okay, here is the moment of truth for P Manny Martinez. If he gives up 2 runs this inning, he will be traded tonight for whatever we can get. 1 run or none and he will be a Jay the rest of the season. Ron Taylor swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to right. P Francisco Sotelo bunts Taylor to 2nd and Abonza stays put at 3rd. Omar Camacho strikes out! Victor Ocasio flies out to right!! Do not tell Martinez that I was thinking of trading him, please.... Won - 8 to 1 Do not look now, well, DO look! You may not see it again for a long while! We are at .500!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable! 54-108 (.333) last year.... After May 8 of THIS season, we were 10-24 (.294)... We have gone an amazing 24-10 (.706) since!!!! We had 12 hits and made 1 error New Orleans had 9 hits and made 2 errors Manny Martinez (W 2-3) went 7 innings, allowed 1 run, 8 hits, 1 walk and set a new Jay record with 9 strikeouts! At bat, he reached on an error and scored a run. RHP Justin Reddick went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and 1 walk. Bill Colby (L 2-9) went 3.1 innings, gave us 7 runs (6 earned), 9 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk, 1 HBP and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit. CF Frank Wendell had no hits or walks, but scored 2 runs. 2B Leander Gooding had 2 hits and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. LF Glen Lewis had 3 hits with a double and his 7th home run of the season and 4 RBI. 3B Marty Eades had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Bart Daw had a hit and a walk and an RBI. C Garrett Bender went 3 for 3 with a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. I think we will start platooning him and Bert Swope, as Swope has failed to hit lefties much. The Pelicans announced that 2B Mike Akins had chronic back soreness and would likely be out about 3 weeks. |

The Memphis Mules are back here for a short 2 game set to end our home stand. They won 3 of 4 in Richmond over the weekend. We are 3-1 against them on the season and won 2 games from them the last time they were here, two weeks ago to start this home stand. They are 4th in scoring with 4.35 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.93). The Mules are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 3.99 per game (Jacksonville is tied for #4 with 3.72!). We are on pace to subtract 272 runs from the total we allowed last season (875)! Their run differential is +25, 4th best in the League, and ours is..... Brace yourself.... +14!!!!! I am certainly enjoying this recent prosperity, but I do not see it lasting. We still have a lot of weaknesses and an injury or two could quickly put us back in the low rent district. Even without any injuries, we are unlikely to be a .500 team... Memphis Mules (36-32 .529 3.5 GB in 3rd place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (35-34 .507 5 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division) MEM: Dave Whipple (27-R) (1-0 3.38 ERA 8 IP, 9 H, 1 HR, 2 BB, 4 SO) vs. JAX: Marco Gonzalez (28-R) (1-3 4.55 ERA 27.2 IP, 29 H, 3 HR, 6 BB, 10 SO) For the 2nd day in a row, we are facing a pitcher making his 2nd start of the season and who won his debut. We have never faced Whipple. He beat Columbus in Ohio in his 1st start. Gonzalez last pitched 9 days ago and tossed a 7 hit shutout with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Gonzalez and Dalton Hartman (25-R) will start these two games against Memphis and the one that gets hit hardest will be sent to Daytona (A). Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) MEMPHIS 1: SS Bill Weydert (24-S .206-189-1-10-.514-7 B) 2: RF Juan Nunez (35-R .281-121-1-5-.679-3 D+) All-Star 3: 3B Keith Meyer (27-L .341-267-9-36-.929-13 C+) MVP/Silver Slugger(2B)/All-Star 4: 2B Leo Toruno (28-L .307-251-9-45-.908-17 B) Silver Slugger(SS)/All-Star 5: 1B Nestor Gonzalez (28-L .321-237-13-56-.908-0 A) Silver Slugger/All-Star 6: LF Rafael Jimenez (28-L .310-229-9-38-.892-6 C) 7: CF Ron Alario (32-R .205-176-0-4-.519-1 B) 8: C Ed Vaughan (35-L .140-150-5-18-.547-0 C) 9: P Dave Whipple (27-R .333-3-0-0-.667-0 C+) JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Cal Doty (25-L .299-144-2-14-.772-12 C+) 2: 2B Leander Gooding (31-R .264-246-1-23-.633-13 B+) 3: LF Glen Lewis (21-L .305-233-7-40-.869-16 C+) Rookie 4: 3B Marty Eades (31-R .351-94-2-20-.974-1 C+) 5: C Bert Swope (30-S .269-119-2-10-.687-1 B) 6: 1B Jack Washburn (20-L .338-68-3-10-.957-5 B) Rookie 7: RF Rob Worms (29-R .199-186-5-17-.622-15 A) Gold Glove 8: SS Bart Daw (30-R .226-190-2-20-.622-7 A) 9: P Marco Gonzalez (28-R .000-10-0-0-.000-0 F) Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 81 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from right Attendance: 9,096 Top of the First: Bill Weydert lines out to center. His first home run hit this season... Ed Vaughan grounds a hit up the middle and P Dave Whipple bunts him to 2nd. Bill Weydert grounds one to 1st, but Jack Washburn boots it... I am not sure I will be able to stomach his errors, no matter how much he hits... Juan Nunez flies out to right and Vaughan tags up and scores. 3 to 0, Mules. Keith Meyer lines a hit to center... The Bullpen is up. Weydert tries to steal 3rd with 2 outs, which is stupid, and C Bert Swope throws him out! Bottom of the Ninth: P Dave Whipple is at 123 pitches. For the fourth time in the last five innings, we get a leadoff walk when Bert Swope takes 4 straight outside the zone. We have yet to be able to take advantage... A wild pitch sends Swope to 2nd. Jack Washburn walks on 4 pitches, bringing the tying run to the plate. We have already used up all our pinch-hitters in the 7th inning... Only Garrett Bender and Frank Wendell remain on the bench... RF Mike Volkman (34-L) beats out an infield hit and the bases are loaded with no outs... That does it for P Dave Whipple. New Pitcher: John Robillard (26-R), their closer, who is pitching with a mild hamstring strain and is 2-2 with 9 Saves and a 6.48 ERA in 33.1 IP. He had a 3.31 ERA in 100.2 IP last year. SS Charlie Faber (31-R) strikes out on 3 pitches... PH Frank Wendell (34-R) grounds into a force at home, 1-2. I should have used Garrett Bender, who is hot, but I was afraid of the double play... Cal Doty gets beaned to force in a run and put the tying run in scoring position. 3 to 1, Mules. Leander Gooding swings at the first pitch and ground a hit up the middle and Volkman scores and Wendell heads home......Safe! And Doty and Gooding move up to 2nd and 3rd!!!!! Tie Game: 3 to 3! Glen Lewis is NOT walked, as I expected, but he takes a 2-2 pitch for strike three.... Also, not what I expected.... Second game in a row that he has struck out looking in the bottom of the 9th with a chance to win the game... Extras! Top of the Tenth: New Pitcher: Roger Wallace (26-R). 4-5-6 all deadly left-handed hitters up... Leo Toruno lines a hit to left... He tries to steal 2nd, but we have a pitchout on and C Bert Swope throws him out! With 2 outs, Rafael Jimenez swings at the first pitch and pops one up to short, but Charlie Faber bungles it.... Ron Alario swings at the first pitch and doubles to left and Jimenez scores... 4 to 3, Mules. Ed Vaughan swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses. Bottom of the Tenth: Marty Eades flies out to center... Bert Swope grounds out to short... Jack Washburn swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to right... Lost - 4 to 3 We had 6 hits and made 2 errors Memphis had 12 hits and made 1 error Marco Gonzalez went 6.2 innings, allowed 3 runs (2 earned), 10 hits, 2 home runs, 1 walk and struck out 1. Both pitchers we had on the bubble were hit about the same by the Mules, so we decided to keep Dale Hartman (25-R) because he could hit better. Yesterday was a day off for us, so we also made some other changes to the roster. P Marco Gonzalez (27-R), 1B Tony Becerra (33-L) and CF Frank Wendell (34-R) were all sent to Daytona and IF Ed Diskin (38-R), LF Barry Laskowski (35-R) and CF Danny Stewart (31-L) were recalled. All three hitters we are bringing back have been on a tear for the Tortugas. In 9 games, Diskin has hit 4 doubles and 4 home runs and has 13 RBI and 1.111 OPS.
