The Giants got a magnificent performance from SP Jeff Brown who muffled the Expos offense enroute to a tight 3-1 Giants win. Carlos Sanchez picked up the save, his 6th.

Brown is now 3-2 with a 1.06 ERA in 6 starts for the Giants. This is Brown's 10th season in the MLB, his previous best for WAR was in 1970 when he was 4-8 with a 2.15 ERA in 21 starts for the Astros.

Brown was effective for the Giants, seldom allowing the Expos to square up a pitch. The RHP tossed 87 pitches over 8 innings. He limited the Expos to just 1 run on 3 hits.

The Expos manager was quoted as saying "we made a couple of mistakes (2 errors) and the cost us."

Expos SP Eddie Hernanez falls to 3-2.

The MLB First Quarter Summary.

The Kansas City Royals came out of the gate 18-7. The BNN predicted a mediocre .500 season by the Royals with them finishing 19 games back of the Athletics in the AL West. But with the addition of SP Pat Quinn from the Dodgers in the off season SP Brian Rohde from the Yankees and SP Victor Cartagena from the Astros, they have a solid rotation.

Atlanta Braves 2B Hyo-jun Ryu is off to a good start to the season. The 23 year old hit just .243 with 2 HRs and 20 RBIs in 90 games for the Braves in 1978, but despite the Braves struggles, Ryu as has been a nice surprize.

Another player showing some great numbers despite his team is Indians CF Dave Dadswell. The 25 year old was limited to just 45 games last year due to a couple of injuries but hit .340 with 4 HRs and 15 RBIs in those games in 1977. The Indians hope he can remain healthy and improve the Indians spot in the standings.

Houston Astros SP Justin Bergman is never a surprise when he is among the pitching leaders, but after a 6-10 record and 3.79 ERA in 22 starts last year in Houston, it was a question whether the 34 year old 4 time All star would be back in his usual form. That question was answered.

Baltimore Orioles SP Trevor Fraley had a cup of coffee with the Orioles in 1975 with 2 relief appearances. Last year he got his first MLB start, 6 in fact and over 25 innings was 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA. This year he was given a chance out of training camp and the 26 year old 1970 MLB 19th overall pick for Baltimore is showing some signs of a bright future.

After a great start to the season the Expos have cooled off considerably. The Expos remain just a game out of 1st after 25 games, but are 4 and 6 in the last 10. The Expos are also 0-5 in one run games.

The Expos are certainly happy to have the 1976 version of SP Eddie Hernanez, not the 1977 version. Hernanez was 5-12 with a 3.76 ERA in 22 starts for Montreal in 1977, he was 11-6 with a 3.01 ERA in 20 starts for Montreal in 1976.

Montreal is getting a nice season so far from SS/3B Gilberto Luna. In 1977 Luna hit just .206 with 0 HRs and 6 RBIs 32 games for Montreal. The speed infielder is 3rd in the NL in OPS this year.

The Expos will send down SS Fumiya Watari to AAA Seattle and promote SS Mike Howard. The 26 year old Howard is hitting .338 with 0 HRs and 8 RBIs in 18 games for the AAA Pilots.
