WORLD SERIES GAME THREE


Blue Jays (Nolan Ryan) @ Cubs (Fernando Valenzuela)

Top of the 1st

Valenzuela walks Robin Yount. He gets Noa Prigent out but then Yount moves to 3rd on a single by Zhao-ji Li. Al Carlson pops out but Dave Parker hits a single, scoring Yount and putting Li on 2nd. Bill Johnson walks and the bases are loaded. Miguel Serna grounds out to leave them that way.

BLUE JAYS LEAD 1-0

Bottom of the 1st

Ryan walks Dan Gladden to lead things off. Ernie Whitt hits into a fielder's choice and then advances to 2nd on a Ryne Sandberg single. Nick Essay and Scott Fletcher are unproductive outs.

Top of the 2nd

Valenzuela gets Larry Parrish and Ryan before going up a double to Yount. Prigent flies out.

Bottom of the 2nd

Mikey Hatcher and Royle Stillman make outs and Brian Doyle singles. Valenzuela grounds out.

Top of the 3rd

3 up, 3 down (Li, Carlson, Parker)

Bottom of the 3rd

Gladden leads off with a single but Whitt hits into a double play. Sandberg strikes out.

Top of the 4th

Johnson walks and goes to 2nd on a Serna ground out. Parrish and Ryan can get him no further.

Bottom of the 4th

Esasky leads off with a single. Fletcher flies out but then Hatcher singles, moving Essay up a bag. Ryan gets Stillman and Doyle to end the threat.

Top of the 5th

3 up, 3 down (Yount, Prigent, Li)

Bottom of the 5th

Ryan strikes out Valenzuela and Gladden before Whitt singles. Sandberg grounds out.

Top of the 6th

Carlson reaches with a single and moves to 2nd when Parker does the same. Johnson hits into a double play, moving Carlson to 3rd. Serna singles him home. Parrish strikes out.

BLUE JAYS LEAD 2-0

Bottom of the 6th

Essay and Fletcher make outs before Ryan walks Hatcher. Stillman doubles, moving Hatcher to 3rd. Doyle gets the intentional walk... which des not work out as Valenzuela hits a single, scoring both Hatcher and Stillman. Then Ryan walks Gladden to reload the bags. Whitt grounds out.

GAME IS TIED 2-2

Top of the 7th

Domingo Bruno pinch hits for Ryan and strikes out. Yount walks and Prigent homers to left. Li and Carlson make outs.

BLUE JAYS LEAD 4-2

Bottom of the 7th

Bruno stays in to play first base. Prigent leaves the game and Floyd Chiffer enters to pitch for Toronto.
3 up, 3 down (Sandberg, Essay, Fletcher)

Top of the 8th

Bill Wegman takes the mound for Chicago.
Parker flies out but Johnson reaches 2nd on a throwing error by Esasky. Serna legs out an infield single and Johnson goes to 3rd before scoring on a Parrish sac fly. Bruno grounds out.

BLUE JAYS LEAD 5-2

Bottom of the 8th

Chiffer walks Hatcher who is then erased on a fielder's choice by Stillman. Stillman then steals 2nd... somewhat surprisingly. He moves up another bag when Doyle strikes out and then, with pinch hitter Jeff Stone at the plate, he scores on a wild pitch by Chiffer. Stone strikes out.

BLUE JAYS LEAD 5-3

Top of the 9th

Rick Mahler takes the mound for the Cubs
Yount pops out. Eiichi Hasegawa pinch hits for Chiffer and puts the ball in the left field bleachers. Mahler gets Li and Carlson out.

BLUE JAYS LEAD 6-3

Hasegawa stays in the play left field. Carlson is replaced by Daniel Peters who is in to pitch.
Peters gets Gladden and Whitt before Sandberg singles. Essay strikes out.

BLUE JAYS WIN 6-3!

Blue Jays (Bert Blyleven) @ Cubs (Jose Rijo)

Top of the 1st

Al Carlson leads off with a single and then steals 2nd and moves to 3rd on a Robin Yount ground out. Zhao-ji Li walks and Dave Parker hits into a double ply, stranding Carlson.

Bottom of the 1st

Blyleven gets Dan Gladden and Ernie Whitt. Ryne Sandberg reaches with a single, steals 2nd and goes to 3rd on a bad throw by Bill Johnson. Nick Essay grounds out.

Top of the 2nd

Larry Parrish grounds out and then Bill Johnson reaches on an error by Rijo. Noa Prigent singles, moving Johnson to 2nd. Miguel Serna grounds out moving both runners up. Blyleven strikes out.

That is three frames in a row that a runner was left on 3rd without scoring.

Bottom of the 2nd

Scott Fletcher leads off with a single but is doubled off by Mickey Hatcher. Royle Stillman grounds out.

Top of the 3rd

Carlson kicks things off with a double. Yount flies out and Li singles, moving Carlson to 3rd. Parker strikes out and Parrish grounds out.

Fletcher flies out and Hatcher hits into a double play.

Parrish singles, scoring Li and moving Armas to 2nd. Wegman walks Johnson and the bases are loaded. Prigent hits into a fielder's choice, scoring Armas and sending Parrish to 3rd. Serna single, scoring Parrish and advancing Prigent to 3rd. Hasegawa strikes out.

CUBS LEAD 5-4

Bottom of the 8th

Arms stays in the play right field. Carlson moves back to left field. Hasegawa leaves the game and Gary Lavelle enters to pitch.
Fletcher pops out and Hatcher hits a double. Stillman grounds out and Jeff Stone pinch hits for Doyle. Lavelle uncorks a wild pitch, moving Hatcher to 3rd and then he scores on a Stone single. Andre Thornton pinch hits for Wegman. Stone steals 2nd. Thornton flies out.

CUBS LEAD 6-4

Top of the 9th

Stone stays in to play left field and Hatcher moves to first base. Rick Mahler is in to pitch.
Carlson grounds out and Yount doubles. Li singles, moving Yount to 3rd. Armas flies out. Parrish singles, scoring Yount and moving Li, the potential tying run, to 2nd. Johnson flies out.

Dave Parker singles and Larry Parrish follows with an infield version. Bill Johnson hits into a double play, moving Parker to 3rd. Noa Prigent deposits a ball over the centre field wall to tie the game. Miguel Serna pops out.

Bottom of the 2nd

Mickey Hatcher legs out an infield single and moves up a bag on a sac bunt by Royce Stillman. Davis is called for a balk, pushing Hatcher to 3rd. Brian Doyle grounds out, scoring Hatcher. Lea strikes out.

CUBS LEAD 3-2

Top of the 3rd

Davis and Carlson ground out, but on the latter fielding play Royce Stillman hurts himself and is forced to leave the game. It looks pretty bad. Jeff Stone takes over in right field.
Yount grounds out.

Bottom of the 3rd

Gladden grounds out and Whitt walks. Sandberg flies out but then Esasky hits a two-run homer. Fletcher flies out.

CUBS LEAD 5-2

Top of the 4th

Lea gets Li and Parker before walking Parrish and Johnson. Prigent singles, scoring Parrish and sending Johnson to 3rd. Then Serna singles, scoring Johnson and moving Prigent to 2nd. Eiichi Hasegawa pinch hits for Davis but strikes out.

Carlos Diaz is in to pitch for Toronto.

Top of the 5th

Carlson flies out and Yount singles. Li flies out and Parker doubles, moving Yount to 3rd. Parrish flies out to end the threat.

Diaz gets Lea and Gladden out before Whitt and Sandberg single. He then throws a wild pitch that puts them on 2nd and 3rd. Esasky strikes out.

Top of the 6th

3 up, 3 down (Johnson, Prigent, Serna)

Bottom of the 6th

Diaz walks Fletcher who advances to 3rd on a Hatcher single. Stone grounds out and Hatcher moves to 2nd. The Jays give Doyle an intentional walk to load the bases. Andre Thornton pinch hits for Lea. He grounds to Serna who guns down Fletcher trying to score.
The Jays pull a double switch with David Brooks taking over at third for Serna and Kuniaki Sakamoto coming in to pitch.
Gladden flies out and the Jays get out of a jam.

Top of the 7th

Ed Lynch takes the mound for Chicago.
He gets Brooks and Carlson out before Yount singles. Li doubles, scoring Yount and tying the game. Parker flies out.

GAME IS TIED 5-5

Bottom of the 7th

3 up, 3 down (Whitt, Sandberg, Esasky)

Top of the 8th

Lynch gets Parrish and Johnson out before surrendering a single to Prigent. Tony Armas pinch hits for Sakamoto but grounds out.

Bottom of the 8th

Aaron Wilson comes in to pitch for the Jays.
He gets Fletcher and Hatcher out but Stone singles. He steals 2nd but Doyle grounds out.

Top of the 9th

Brooks ground out and Carlson walks. He is erased on a fielder's choice by Yount. Li flies out.

Bottom of the 9th

Orlando Mercado pinch hits for Lynch and walks. Gladden muffs a sac bunt attempt and turns it into a fielder's choice. Gladden then steals 2nd (to make up for it) and moves to 3rd when Whitt grounds out. Sandberg singles to give the Cubs a walk-off win.

Cubs (Fernando Valenzuela) @ Blue Jays (Alfredo Martinez)

Top of the 1st

Dan Gladden leads off with a single and Scott Fletcher follows suit. They both move up with a double steal. Ryne Sandberg then gets an infield single, scoring Gladden and moving Fletcher to 3rd. Nick Esasky strikes out and Sandberg steals 2nd. Neither Andre Thornton nor Ernie Whitt can move them any further.

CUBS LEAD 1-0

Bottom of the 1st

Al Carlson fouls out before Noa Prigent walks. Zhao-ji Li hits into a double play.

Top of the 2nd

Mickey Hatcher leads off with a double. Jeff Stone flies out and Brian Doyle grounds out, moving Hatcher to 3rd. Gladden walks and Fletcher flies out.

Bottom of the 2nd

Valenzuela gets Eiichi Hasegawa and Dave Parker. Bill Johnson reaches on an error by Sandberg. Robin Yount singles, advancing Johnson to 2nd. Miguel Serna then hits a single which scores Johnson, tying the game. Larry Parrish then duplicates the feat, scoring Yount. Carlson makes it three in a row, scoring Serna. Prigent flies out and...no! Jeff Stone dropped the ball! Parrish scores, Carlson ends up on 3rd and Prigent is on 2nd. Valenzuela walks Li and the bases are loaded. Hasegawa hits a grand slam! Parker grounds out for the second time this inning.

BLUE JAYS LEAD 8-1!

Top of the 3rd

The Cubs are way behind but it is very early. Sandberg leads off with a double. Esasky and Thornton strike out and Whitt reaches with an infield single, pushing Sandberg to 3rd. Hatcher grounds out.

Bottom of the 3rd

Mike Bielecki comes it to pitch for Chicago.
He walks Johnson and strikes out Yount. Serna and Parrish fly out.

Top of the 4th

Stone singles and Doyle lines out to Martinez. Stone steals 2nd and scores on a Gladden single. He also steals 2nd and goes to 3rd on a Fletcher ground out. Sandberg walks and Esasky grounds out.

BLUE JAYS LEAD 8-2

Bottom of the 4th

Carlson leads off with a triple. He scores on a Prigent ground out. Bielecki walks Li before getting Hasegawa and Parker out.

Top of the 5th

Thornton also leads off with a triple. Whitt scores him with a sac fly. Hatcher reaches on an error by Serna but is immediately picked off by Martinez. Stone doubles and Doyle flies out.

Johnson flies out and Yount singles. Serna and Parrish are unproductive.

The Jays bring in Floyd Chiffer to pitch.
He coaxes Fletcher to hit into a double play. Sandberg flies out.

Carlson walks and advances to 2nd on a single by Prigent.
Jim Wright comes in to relieve Bielecki.
Both runners move up on a wild pitch then Li walks to load the bags. Last time Hasegawa was up in this situation he hit a grand slam. This time he has to settle for an RBI single, scoring Carlson. Parker strikes out and then Johnson hits into fielder's choice, getting Prigent at home plate. Yount hits an infield single, scoring Li. Serna pops out.

Top of the 7th

Esasky ground out and Thornton singles. Whitt and Hatcher leave him there.

Bottom of the 7th

3 up, 3 down (Parrish, Carlson, Prigent)

Top of the 8th

Chiffer gets out from Stone and Doyle before Gladden singles. He then walks Fletcher and gives up a 2-run triple to Sandberg.
Bill Dawley takes the mound for the Jays.
Esasky doubles, scoring Sandberg and then Thornton doubles, scoring Esasky. Whitt grounds out.

Wright gets Li and Hasegawa out before walking Parker and Johnson.
Ed Lynch comes in to pitch for the Cubs.
He strikes out Yount.
