April 1875
1st May 1875 The fans of the Blues are experiencing some deja vu with this seasons start. The reason being that the AL is very similar in scores and make up to last year. The Blues posted a 4-5 record for April which sees them in joint second in the AL table only 1 game behind the leaders. This though is in a league where all teams are only separated by 1 game. The batting played well in patches during the month on its way to 65 runs scored. The player that showed the best form was catcher Frank Fleet. Fleet had 40 at bats in 9 game starts to produce an average of .350. He also picked up 7 runs and 7 RBI's for the month. John Dailey was another bright spark as he picked up the AL Rookie of the Month award for April. The pitching was all over the place for the Blues during April. The first 3 games were started by Rookie pitcher Trickey Nichols who picked up an ERA of 1.73 from those 3 games. After the 3 games Nichols was optioned to the minors and Cy Bentley was bought back in as the starting pitcher. Bentley pitched the final 6 games of the month and had an overall ERA for the month of 2.32. Going forward their could still be confusion as Nichols has been recalled from the minors today and is slated to start the next game. The team has given up 67 runs in total. Full pitching stats for April Full batting stats for April The Blues played 9 games in April They started by losing 1-2 against the Baltimore Orioles. 5-6, 7-4 and 8-9 The next series saw them beat the St. Louis Brown Stockings 2-1. 11-13, 6-4 and 7-4 They lost the final series 1-2 against the Philadelphia Athletics. 11-3, 3-16 and 7-8 The team will play 10 games in May. April 1875
1st May 1875 The fans of the Athletics are in a happy mood as their team has started the season with a winning record. The team picked up 5 wins and only 4 losses during April to put them joint 1st in the AL. The AL is tight with all teams within a game of each other but if the team continue to build on the good start then perhaps they have a chance. The batting had ups and downs during the month as they scored 72 runs. The star with the bat was Second Baseman John Peters. Peters, last seasons AL rookie of the year, has continued with his excellent form as he hit an average of .405 for the month. He did this from 17 hits in 42 at bats. He also scored 9 runs and had 12 RBI's. Dick McBride continues to be the starter that the team relies on. He started all 9 games and produced another excellent display of ball control. He pitched 72.1 innings to give up 88 hits and 21 earned runs for an ERA of 2.61. He earned another AL Pitcher of the Month award with this performance. The team gave up a total of 60 runs Full pitching stats for April Full batting stats for April The Athletics played 9 games in April The team started with a 1-2 loss against the St. Louis Brown Stockings. 13-1, 1-8 and 4-5 The next series saw the team win 2-1 against the Baltimore Orioles. 5-7, 12-3 and 10-6 The final series of the month was another 2-1 win against the Cleveland Blues. 3-11, 16-3 and 8-7 The team will be in action 10 times in May. April 1875
1st May 1875 The season has again started slowly for the Brown Stockings and the fans are hoping this is not a sign of things to come. The team picked up 4 wins and 5 losses in April to sit joint second in the very tight AL. One game covers all the teams in the AL Looking at the batting stats it seems that the stars are failing to fire with the bat again as the team scored 56 runs. The only star to play well was Left Fielder George Hall. In 37 at bats from 9 games Hall hit 15 times for an average of .405. He also scored 10 runs and 8 RBI's. These figures saw him voted the Batter of the month in the AL for April The pitching of George Zettlein is sometimes the only good news from the games played. In April though even he struggled slightly as he produced an ERA of 3.11 from 9 game starts and 63.2 innings pitched. He gave up 72 hits and 22 earned runs. The team gave up a total of 65 runs during the month. Full pitching stats for April Full batting stats for April The Brown Stockings played 9 games in April They started with a 2-1 series win against the Philadelphia Athletics. 10-13, 8-1 and 5-4 The next series was lost 1-2 against the Cleveland Blues. 13-11, 4-6 and 4-7 The final series of the month was lost 1-2 against the Baltimore Orioles. 4-12, 4-2 and 4-9 Next month sees the team playing another 10 games. May 1875
1st June 1875 The fans of the Orioles are very worried about the way their season has turned. The month of May was terrible for the team as they managed to pick up only 2 wins while losing 8 games. This has left them bottom of the AL table 5 games behind the leading Philadelphia Athletics. If the team wish to retain the pennant they will need to improve substantially. The batting for the Orioles is still in flux this season as they struggle to find a set line up. The team scored a low 51 runs in May. The best of the batting came from First Baseman Art Allison. The best batter that started all 10 games was Lip Pike with a low average of .268. The pitching also had its ups and downs during the month. Cherokee Fisher started 9 games and pitched 69.2 innings. May 1875
1st June 1875 The month of June saw the Reds fans feel very down in the dumps as their team managed a poor 3 wins and 7 losses. This has left the team languishing in last place in the NL table, 10 games behind the leaders. The poor performances of the team so far this season has seen the team sack manager Tony Gutierrez. Gutierrez managed 37 wins and 39 losses while in charge of the Reds but never finished higher than 3rd in the NL table and thus failed to keep his job. The new Manager is Ken Fletcher. Fletcher was manager at the Cleveland Blues last season where he finished 24-36. Hopefully he has a better time with the Reds. The batting was really poor during the month with only 43 runs scored. The best of this poor show came from Catcher John Clapp. Clapp started all 10 games and connected 14 times from 41 at bats. This gave him an average of .341 with 7 runs and 6 RBI's. The pitching tried its best but with very few runs to work with it was never going to be enough. Bill Stearns produced solid form before he injured himself towards the end of the month. He pitched 73.1 innings in 9 games giving up 79 hits and 21 earned runs. This saw his ERA as 2.58. The team gave up a total of 67 runs. Stearns injury is still under assessment and we will give you the news of this next month. Full pitching stats for May Full batting stats for May The Reds played 10 games in May They started with a 2-1 series win against the Boston Red Stockings. 4-7, 7-4 and 6-4 The next series saw the team swept 0-3 against the Brooklyn Atlantics. 5-8, 3-5 and 2-3 The third series of the month saw a 1-2 loss against the Chicago White Stockings. 6-9, 1-14 and 3-1 The final game of the month saw a 6-12 loss to the Boston Red Stockings. 1st July 1875 The fans of the Orioles are slightly happier as the team showed a little improvement during the month. The team managed to pick up four wins to 6 losses during the month. This lifted them to joint 3rd in the AL table a long 8 games behind the leaders. The Orioles traded 25 year old Centre Fielder Charley Jones to the Boston Red Stockings in exchange for 25 year old Left Fielder Farley Rogers and 23 year old minor league Catcher Mike Ledwith. This trade sees fans not sure who got the better of the deal as they gained solid outfielder Farley Rogers but lost highly rated rookie outfield prospect Charley Jones. The batting continued to struggle during the month of June. The team scored 55 runs during the month. The best of this misfiring batting line up was Second Baseman Eddie Booth. Booth started 8 games during the month that saw him hit 9 times in his 29 at bats. This gave him an average of .310 along with 3 runs and 0 RBI's. The pitching of Cherokee Fisher showed he still has the ability to win games. He started all 10 games and pitched 84 innings. He gave away 92 hits and 18 earned runs for an ERA of 1.93. the team gave up a total of 55 runs. 1st July 1875 The fans of the Red Stockings saw their team have a poor month in their chase of the leading White Stockings. The team picked up only 4 wins and gave away 6 losses. This record has left them in second place in the NL table but they are now 9 games behind the leading White Stockings. The Red Stockings traded 27 year old Catcher Scott Hastings to the Clevlend Blues in exchange for 27 year old Centre Fielder Count Sensenderfer and 24 year old Minor League Right Fielder Billy Arnold The Red Stockings traded 25 year old Left Fielder Farley Rogers and 23 year old minor league Catcher Mike Ledwith to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for 25 year old Centre Fielder Charley Jones. The loss of both the starting catcher Hasting and the starting left fielder Rogers has left a gap that in the line up that others will now need to fill. June 1875
1st July 1875 The fans of the White Stockings cannot believe how far the team has stretched the lead in the NL. They are now starting to get worried that this might make the team complacent. The team didnt show any complacency in June as they went 8-2 again to leave them 9 games clear at the top of the NL table. The batting was solid during the month with 70 runs scored. The best of the batting came in the form of Short Stop Ross Barnes. Barnes produced an excellent average of .450 during the month as he claimed 18 hits from 40 at bats. He also scored 10 runs and 11 RBI's. These figures saw him pick up the NL Batter of the Month award. Jim Britt's pitching continues to dazzle all opposition batters and fans alike. He pitched 9 games and hurled 76.2 innings. This work saw him give up 83 hits and 19 earned runs for an ERA of 2.23. This was enough for the voters to award him the NL Pitcher of the Month award. Bill Kelly picked up a strained Oblique early in the month and missed 3 weeks of July while gaining treatment. June 1875
1st July 1875 The reds continue to prop up the NL table after anb average month of 5-5. The fans can see that this is getting them closer to their rivals and hope that this is they way things will improve going forawrd. The Reds traded 32 year old First Baseman Joe Start to the Philadelphia Athletics in exchange for 25 year old Right Fielder Gat Stires and 24 year old minor league Third Baseman Al Nevin.
