Tragic Plane Crash Kills Pirates All-Star
Roberto Clemente, star outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, died late New Years Eve night in the crash of a cargo plane carrying relief supplies to the victims of the earthquake in Managua.Three days of national mourning were proclaimed in his native Puerto Rico where he was the most popular sports' figure in the island's history. He is a certainty to be enshrined in Baseball's Hall Of Fame.He was only the 11th man in baseball history to get 3,000 hits and his lifetime batting average of .317 is the highest among active players.Mr.Clemente was 38 years old,won the National League batting title 4 times in his 18 year career, was named to the all-star team 12 times and in 1966 was named the league's Most Valuable Player. He was also one of the finest defensive outfielders with a very strong throwing arm.He led the Pittsburgh Pirates to two world championships in 1960 and 1971,the latter time being named the Most Valuable Player in the World Series.Mr.Clemente was the leader of Puerto Rican efforts to aid the Nicaraguan victims and was aboard the plane because he suspected that relief supplies were falling into the hands of profiteers. The 4 engine DC-7 piston-powered plane crashed moments after takeoff from San Juan International Airport at 9:22 PM.The plane, carrying a crew of three and one other passenger, came down in heavy seas a mile and a half from shore.

Phillies Acquire Maddox From Giants In Massive 6 Player Deal!
Veterans Stadium,Philadelphia,Pa.-Phillies General manager Paul Owens has just finished a hastily called press conference in which he announced the trading of 4 players as well as $300,000 to the San Francisco Giants for 23 year old CF Garry Maddox and veteran pitcher Don McMahon. In the trade, which took over three months to complete, the Phillies are giving up promising reliever Mac Scarce, veteran reliever Chris Short, utility outfielder Del Unser and surprise surprise, newly acquired CF Dave May who was originally going to be a part of a three team trade between Phils,Brewers and Giants that never materialized forcing the Phillies to deal with both teams seprately in order to get their man.In Maddox, the Phillies are getting a fantastic young center fielder who has all of the tools to be a multiple year all-star as well as a perennial gold glove winner,Phillie fans, you're gonna love him! Also acquired in the deal was 42 year old relief man Don McMahon,a solid veteran pitcher who could have a very good effect on the Phillies young staff.

"Lefty" might not like the fact that you are dealing away his "caddy".

Believe it or not,I actually thought about that, but in the end,Pinson's ability to play all 3 outfield positions as well as his being a left handed bat were too much not to take.

1973 Season Preview
It's April 3rd 1973,and all 24 Major league teams have now come north to prepare for the long season ahead, ans as usual, there's plenty of questions coming into this season like, can the Reds bounce back from an injury plagued 72' and become contenders again?,will the disappointing Athletics come back from a lackluster year where they played mediocre baseball for 5 months of the season only to come on like gangbusters late only to fall just short of the AL western crown? Talking about the west, were the Rangers for real? or were they paper champions who just got lucky? Plenty of pundits are pointing at their +6 Pythagorean record which when coupled with Oakland's -9 Pythagorean creates a 15 game swing that says Oakland was actually the better team.We will see.How about the NL East and the reigning champion Cubs who despite being up 2-0 in the NLCS still found a way to lose making it 64 years without a championship. Will they be able to pick themselves up again and make another run or will someone else take the crown, like the upstart Phillies who are very young but also very talented. Finally,we have the world champion Orioles, who have dominated the American League East for years now, will New York,Boston or Detroit finally be able to wrestle away the crown?Ah,whats a season preview without predictions you say? How about: Red Sox,Athletics,Reds, and Cardinals with the A's and Reds meeting up in the Series and Oakland winning it all.I'm done here, lets PLAY BALL!!!
