Well, not exactly what I hoped for from Joba's first start, but it was progress. He got to 65 pitches still hitting 100 mph at times. He needs to start trusting his curve and change more as time goes on, but he'll get there. His control was an issue. I read something that Overbay said about him. He got 2 strikes quickly using his heat. He'd then nibble trying to get batters to chase. In the 8th, that works very well. Early in the game, it's easier to be patient, so they waited ... and walked. He'll have to re-think how he pitches now that he's starting. Hopefully, that doesn't mess with his confidence.

BTW, Joba looked good to me, even though he did not look very well in the box score.
He IS a hell of a pitcher.

Jeter just passed Mickey Mantle to move into third place on the all-time Yankees hit list. He passed Joe DiMaggio, what, two years ago?

At 2,416 hits, he needs only 102 to tie Babe Ruth and 306 to take over first place from Lou Gehrig. So that's about two years, or the middle of 2010 barring injury (or trade - can you imagine?

).

Considering that he's not even 34 yet (later this month), he'll only be around 36 when he takes over this record for a 105-year-old franchise with all of those great hitters. To me, it seems like yesterday when I was saying to myself "What kind of a name is Derek Jeeter, anyway?"

People have been talking for a while now about how he's a shoo-in for 3,000 hits if he stays healthy. For some irrational reason, his climb up the Yankee hits chart is more amazing to me than getting to 3,000 hits.

Win or lose today, I feel good about this. After Mattingly retired, I started to focus on Derek's career and he's been one of my favorites since his rookie year.

Never has so much ink and hot air been wasted on someone who's done nothing yet. I found it very insulting to Roy Halladay that he was virtually ignored vs Joba. Why don't we all wait until Joba wins say 5 games or 10 games before we annoint him?

62 pitches eh? I wonder if he will get past 5 innings in his next start.

His next start will have a max pitch count of 80 so that should get him to at least 5 innings if he can find his control again. Hopefully, he got his jitters out and will settle down vs the Royals.

Hard to believe that Mussina's pitching performance gets us out of another slide. Nice to see the old man still has something left.

Oh, FFS... F********h picks up the W... that's why it's such a stupid metric. His pitching had nothing to do with the NYY win - they should give the W to Giambi.

WOO HOO!! I love it when Giambi steps up and delivers the big knock. It must be the thong and the mustache. Either way, I'm glad he's doing well right now.

I listened to the game on my XM, and the one thing I could never understand is the way John Sterling and his sidekick call the games. It just seemed to me that when the Yankees don't do well, they just piss and moan the whole game. It was like that pretty much until Jason's homer. Maybe it's just me. It's a good thing I don't hear them on road trips.

Neither. He has lost the "w" and, as you have confirmed, he is now back to "F********h."

And I will repeat: He has neither the head nor the heart to be a setup man, much less a closer. Witness how he immediately went south as soon as the Chamberlain decision was made. The gremlins re-entered his head as soon as the expectations of him went up again.

Enough about him. Wang has to be the real concern at this point; hopefully it's just a slump they all go through. He has been too excellent in the past not to cut him plenty of slack for now.

I have to agree with you. Sterling and Kay used to be very good together; one played off and balanced the other, I think. Sterling and Waldman are boring and irritating; he sounds much more pompous without Kay around to let the air out of his balloon and she is simply insipid.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about those two. Most times, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard but I try to rise above it and deal with it since it's the only way I listen to the Yanks. Again, it's only on home games and I hear the other team announcers on the road so it's not so bad.
