I think there is a fairly decent percentage of OOTP players who are not buying because of the lack of a roster set. Probably not SI's fault, but many of your online leagues and simmers preferred playing with today's rosters. I think if the game had a set released on opening day like the old versions, there would have been a dramatic increase in sales. I personally know of 4 guys who played in leagues in the past with me and I talk to online occasionally. They all were waiting for a roster set and may have just passed up on this year's version because of it.

So how many versions of OOTP actually had a 3rd party up-to-date roster set ready on opening day? I can't recall too many, but I could be wrong. I used to be a "Current Rosters" guy, but IMO, "the fun is in the fictional"

Anyway, the whole real rosters issue has already been played out ad nauseum. What can you do?

Before 2006, almost every game had a roster available on release date or within a week or two. Markus and company were always on top of getting the roster makers the game in advance. In fact, the default rosters in past versions were actually MLB clones with different names.

Nothing really. Those who like real rosters, just don't buy the game anymore.

But before 2006 OOTP didn't have a legel team or a big corperation behind it, so it made some of this a little easier. Now Markus has to try to keep both the fans and the legel team happy.

The old roster sets were made by 3rd parties. What does that have to do with Markus and his legal team?

I fail to see how that'd be a legal concern. Beta testers have the game early. Why wouldn't those building mods have it early as well?

Becuse then you'd be suporting, batatesters have to sign/agree to non-discolser and in the eys of law, can be considered part of the company/ part of the develoment prosses. The law is weird and I know SI has said they want to play it safe. Look at the trouble Rockstar Games and EA games have gotten into trouble for "mods" of thier games GTA and Sims respctfully.

Who do you think beta tests?

The roster builders had their hands on the code from the very first day and the very first build.

Not to sound snooty here, but does that mean that the roster builders just got a free copy for nothing? Or are those same people still working on the rosters? The only thread I followed to it dark dreary end was the one involving APujols5, after that, I swore to stay away so I may be out of the loop here.

Well, it seems that until there is a comitted collaborative effort, I just think a Roster set is too much for one person to get done. So that doesn't surprise me

I feel that many people are waiting till another patch and when they see that most bugs are corrected. I think that there should be more control over league finances by league commissioners. Also the problems with deals where the AI places players on ML rosters and thus causes teams to go over roster limit and stops the simming of games. Just my

I have not purchased the game and will not until there is a current roster set available. I do not enjoy playing with entirely fictional players and I am not a historical simmer.

And then when/if a roster set available, I am still unsure about the game. Reading the thread at FOFC, there still appears to be a lot of problems with the game. Roster and management decisions (sign/drop) have been a part of this game for as long as I can remember. These issues should have been fixed.

I want to buy it, I really do!

Unfortunately, I fear being angry with myself for not learning my lesson from last year's version.

I came to this Forum today with every intention of buying the game. It's Baseball Season and I have the fever!

This game is EXACTLY what I am looking for! Except, after reading the Bug section (which I will ALWAYS do now before buying any OOTP game - lesson learned), it appears that it is currently broken for someone like me.

I want to play as GM/Manager of one team (fictional is fine) and 'wheel and deal' my way to a team I can manage to a WS victory.

One poster (in another thread) attempted to explain how the "exploit" of the AI giving you certain minor leaguers actually reduced the AI's percieved value of their side of a trade was a 'bug' in his opinion - I agree. "House Rules" and "workarounds" were suggested. Which, as I understood it resulted in either:

1) Never trading for minor leaguers (yeah, thats what I want to do if trying to build a team)

2) Doing scads of 'test offers' to see if a certain minor leaguer was being treated this way (again - not exactly the kind of 'fun' I want to pay for)

This issue has since been given official Bug status I think, but one of the parting posts by a Veteran Poster specified that if he had but known the person he was debating the issue with "didn't even own the game" beyond the Demo version they were currently trying out, he never would have bothered even discussing the issue at length (paraphrased there - apologies for not being Forum savvy enough to go grab specific quotes). Which I read as - well if you don't own the game, you are not worth the time to discuss the game mechanics with. As a Prospective buyer, that rung a sour note.

The other "Bug" that stopped be from downloading it today was the "Draft and Drop" bug. This is a complete gamestopper for me. Where is the fun and challenge of building a team when the other teams are releasing their top picks every year?

So I will check back in next month to see if another patch to the Beta has been released that brings it up to the standards of a product I would consider finished enough to pay for.

I do want to sincerely thank Marcus for creating this topic and hope my words are taken as intended - I am simply leaving w/out buying because I believe the product is currently unfinished for the purpose I would be spending my money on it. My post is in no way a bashing of this Grand Attempt at the "Holy Grail" that all of us over-aged ex-Earl Weaver players have been waiting on all these years. Kudos for all the good work done so far!

If you're a big MLB roster guy, I think the game would be worth it with real rosters. While they don't really do much with AI in the game anymore, it's still as decent as 6.51. But I don't think you'll have rosters for this version.

I'm wondering if they'll change things up with the roster makers next year (maybe give to some other people). Two years in a row without rosters is killing this game (as well as any semblence of online leagues).

I play the game a lot and have seen neither reported alleged bug, nor, even by hard trying, can I replicate the reported alleged bugs. Only a very few people are reporting either problem; my conclusion is that only a particular set of conditions can cause them, which I in many, many hours of OOTP play have never once encountered.

Not buying OOTP because of those reports strikes me as silly at best, and insane at worst. The game works fine; buy it.
