Charlie F. Householder vs. Charlie W. Householder

There were two Charlie Householders playing around the same time in baseball past, both around 1882-1884. Charlie F. Householder, pictured on the left with Syracuse in 1886, played in 1884 as a third baseman and leftfielder. The other Householder is currently a missing player and was a catcher/first baseman. Baseball-Reference currently lists Charlie F. Householder as playing for the 1885 Richmond team, but the newspaper article states he was the backup catcher. There are similarities and differences between the two men.

So, I have spent a lot of time sorting out the Householders. Charles W. Householder had a really long and well traveled career from the 1870's to the 1890's. He was from Philadelphia and gets mentioned a bunch in the NY Clipper and other sources. Both images you posted are of this Householder. He is balding and frequently mustached. The images for the two Householders on bb-ref also show this one. There are quite a few images of him, since he had such a long career.

Charles F. Householder is much more elusive and to date is a missing player. He had a much shorter career, most of the appearances on his bb-ref actually belong to Charles W. Charles F. was from Harrisburg and seems to have stopped playing in the minors shortly after 1884.

It's a tough case to unpack, but Charles F. is definitely the missing player.

Thanks for clearing up the Householder mess! Baseball-Reference has a huge mess on their hands with the minor league stats between the 2.

Walt Kinzie 1882

Facepack upgrade, to replace the line drawing. This pictures him as a member of the 1883 Fort Wayne team.
