Intriguing that MLBN is pushing back the telecast to 5 pm to show a "double-play" of Braves-Mets from April. Yes, yes, April's Mets were far better than these, but you can't live in the past. Take your medicine, MLBN.

Apparently McLean does not rhyme with bean, dean, and wean.

So mean.

It does rhyme with vain, pain, and insane, though. Possibilities abound.

The "Double Play" game is actually Monday's Pete-a-Thon, aka possibly the last game the Mets will win this month. The log line is out of date. (I guess it's always a game from earlier in the week.). My bad.

Oh, and Paul Blackburn was DFA'd. He shall be dearly missed…much as would be a case of the clap.

Yes, continue in that vein.

In 7 games (4 starts) this year, Blackburn had a 6.85 ERA, but only a 1.65 WHIP. He must be looking at the stat sheet and going, "why are they picking on meeeeee?"

ETA: Nolan McLean will become the 43rd Mets "pitcher" this season. 40th if you don't count Travis Jankowski, Luis Torrens and Jared Young, but why discriminate?

That McCain kid sure has stuff! He is getting some crazy hacks and misses... provided he finds himself within at most six inches of the plate, which ... eeeeeeeh....!

Fitting in seamlessly with his new team, McRain fails to go six innings.

Boom-Boom just couldn't resist letting one fly in the ninth, huh? How nice of him, considering that all these fans come to the park just to get hurt.

I have to admit, I was rooting for Bryan Woo to get out of that bases-loaded jam in the 6th, just so he could have the 24 straight 6-inning starts with two or fewer BB, which hasn't been done since Cy Young in 1905. What can I say, I like history. (Besides, we were ahead.)

Woo woon't pass Cy, though. Cy ran that streak to 35 straight starts until the White Sox jumped on him for four runs in the first and Cy took himself out after just one-third of an inning. (Rightly so…the Pale Hose won that game, 15-1. Might as well save the arm.)

Six innings every time from a (one) starter! Those Pitchfork folk don't even know how much they get spoiled!

You gotta know when you've lost.

Which for the Mets is whenever Montas, Manaea, Holmes, Helsley, Raley, Stanek, or the daily addition from the Syracuse Special get anywhere near the baseball.

So I was thinking about tonight's visit to Williamsport, where the red-hot Metsies (3-11 in August!) will try and prove that they should not be mistaken for a Little League team.

And then I thought about that glorious 24-4 beatdown we laid on the Phoolies there in 2018, taking some of the sting out of having to wear those ridiculous "Players' Weekend" uniforms with the forced and moronic "nicknames" on the back.

But it turns out that I was wrong…the 24-4 victory was the opening game of the series on Thursday…the Mets won the Williamsport game by a standard score of 8-2.

BTW, here are the Metsies who thrashed those Phillies so:

Amed Rosario, ss
Austin Jackson, cf
Wilmer Flores, 1b
Michael Conforto, lf
Todd Frazier, 3b
Brandon Nimmo, rf
Jose Reyes, 2b
Kevin Plawecki, c
Corey Oswalt, p

Doesn't exactly look like Murderer's Row, does it? Btw, this was the first game of a double-header…the Mets lost the 2nd game, 9-6.

Anyway, I was mucking around BB-ref's Callaway-era seasons, and I came up the box score for Callaway's finale, the Last Real Mets Game Ever, which is really the Last Real Baseball Game, since it's the final time a regular season game was tied after nine innings and no "ghost runners" sprouted from the dirt. We all remember Dom Smith winning the game with his walk-off pinch-hit HR…but who was the winning pitcher?

This guy:
Name: Chris Mazza.jpeg
Views: 36
Size: 147.9 KB

He came on after the immortal Walker Lockett had given up two runs to the Braves in the top of the 11th, got the final two outs to get out of the inning and then was given the win when the Mets put up three runs in the bottom half, ending his Mets career with a bang.

Who is he? (I could probably not have gotten this in 100 guesses.)

I have never seen this man before.

But the same I could say about ten other Mets pitchers from THIS season.

Here is Mystery Met with Tampa Bay, as he pitched for the Rays in 2021-22.

Name: MazzaTB.jpeg

Although I had completely forgotten him, I might argue he was born to be a Met, even though he is a third cousin, twice removed (ie, his grandmother was a first cousin) of Yankees legend Joltin' Joe DiMaggio. The first player ever drafted from Menlo College in California, he bumped around in the minors before we made him a Rule V pick in December of '18.

Again, not a chance in hell you can ID him. I'm pretty much just killing time, I admit.

(As opposed to all the vital work that my other Mets posts constitute, of course.)

I looked for the 24-4 game, but it's not on YouTube. It was broadcast on some off-brand service, I now seem to recall. I think it was a Facebook Live game. I think I saved it on an old disk, but…

I barely recall the a-Mazza-in Chris Mazza, even after looking up the game. I mean, Walker Lockett was an easier memory. But he's part of history, so I'll try to keep him in mind.

(Mazza doesn't think he's history; he's still playing for Kane County in the AAPB.)

Oh, Good Lorde!

"Turn Ahead the Clock Night" (July 21, 1999) with Orel Hershiser and the Mercury Mets hosting Future Met Kris Benson and the Buccos. Honestly MLB's bad ideas never go away, do they?

And yes, the Mercury Mets uniforms are far better than the Chitty Connect kits, IMO.

(Rickey Henderson in LF…mmm.)

As I've said before, I prefer this David Peterson to the other one. Hope he sticks around.

And I always enjoy Carp, even in mere highlight snippets and he was correct that the Gnats have turned a gnotable gnumber of DPs this season. However, as it was mere snippet, I don't know if Carp then went on to point out that the teams that turn the most DPs are generally…the ones with the most opposition baserunners. Not as great a stat as one might wish it to be.

Congrats to GG Swaggy V, Super Squirrel and Blastin' Brett Baty for last night's bombs. And Mr 765, but that's a different classification, IMO.

Time to blow up the Mets!

(I don't mean "make trades". I mean "plant a bomb on the team plane". Or not, but I'd at least listen…)

Fell asleep at 3-2.

What rude awakening.

Stanek stank. The rest stank as well.

Fire the front office.

Do it yesterday.

Wednesday…Senga doesn't move his ass to cover 1B

Thursday…Brady House makes a crappy throw to 1B that pulls Chapparo off the bag, but Mr. Spoiled is out at 1B because he didn't bother to bust it out of the box. $341 mn isn't enough to get Lindor to hustle, I guess

And of course, no starter can go 5 IP, unless it's Peterson (sometimes) and the bats go to bed after the 5th inning. 1-for-6 w RiSP, which is probably better than most games.

Such a pile of dead meat.
