Here he is with the Cubs (B&W) and a reasonable alternative (color), from his 1982 TCMA card, which pictures him with the Iowa Cubs.

The Facepack (and Baseball Reference) use the image on the left as depicting Bill Gleason, who pitched in 1 game for the 1890 Cleveland team of the Players League. The picture comes from the 1887 Williamsport team. The image on the right is Gleason with the Philadelphia Quakers in 1888.


To my eye they are the same person, namely Kid Gleason. I don't see Bill Gleason on the Missing Players list so perhaps this is an oversight.

The black & white image is a 1990 Target Dodgers baseball card of Don Crow. I don't recall where I obtained the color photo of him.

A person familiar with the Sporting News photo archives (years ago when they were intact) once informed me that they contained a photo of the Bill Gleason who debuted in 1890. It's possible that he was mistaken, because Bill G. Gleason, debut year 1882, was the player from St. Louis and he spent most of his career with the St. Louis Browns of the American Association (major league). Nevertheless, it's a lead that might be worth pursuing.

Lindenwood University in the St. Louis area has recently acquired the remnants of the Sporting News research archives. Whether those files include photos I do not know. The announcement is on the following webpage:

Interesting thing. I just recently came across him while working on the FaceGen pack. For whatever reason even though his name was Joseph, and his BBRef page says Joe Lansford, he was accidentally(?) known as Jody Lansford when he played for the Padres.

Running a search with that name, I pulled this site which had this photo:



That appears to be the only scan of that card available, and the only image I can find of him in an actual Padres uniform.

Here is Don from the Topps Vault. He is shown with the badge for '81 on his left shoulder, so this is either '81 or '82 spring training.

The logo on his sleeve points to 1979 spring training, wearing a 1978 Cubs uniform. In 1979 they changed to a circular sleeve logo.

I believe that the original was posted on ebay by dr.jteeee, together with a fine image of Rick Lancelloti as a Padre. I saved both at the time, but can't find the Lansford in my files now so it's good to have it back.

This small, blurry B&W image is all I have been able to find of Boone with the Astros. It comes from an Astros fan site, astrosdaily.com. Needless to say I am looking for a better one but have not been able to find one so far. Topps did a 1983 card of Hausman with the Braves, clearly retouching an image from when he was a Met. Randy Stein can be found with the 82 Iowa Cubs, which is not terrible since it is the same cap at least as the big club. I found a minor league B&W shot of Larry Cox with Midland that year. He's wearing the white-and-blue Cubs road uniform of that period, cap is not visible. The only other alternative so far is an '83 minor league set card which shows Cox as the Iowa manager, wearing the same uni the big team wore in '82-83. Despite diligent searching I have so far found failed to find Bahnsen with the Angels, Nordhagen with the Pirates, D. Brown as an A, Bass as a Ranger, or Jerry Manuel with SD.
