Well, I'm about to create a "White Hope Era" universe, but I am not sure whether I am going to base it on the period from 1910 to 1915, or just 1912. It's easy to say, "Do the whole period", but in 1912 almost every top White Hope and black heavyweight of the time was active. When you pinpoint the time more, it is easier to get the abilities more exact. There is less conjecture.
The following is the decider: I don't have a photo of Jeff MADDEN 210 pounder out of Boston, who although he was a palooka, fought several times with known heavyweights in 1912(Bearcat McMahon, Arthur Pelky, etc.), so it would be uncomfortable to leave him out of a 1912 replay. If I did the entire period, I couldn't leave Tom McCARTY out, and possibly minor palooka Al McCloskey. You guys have helped immensely with photos. Is there a Jeff MADDEN photo out there anywhere? |

I think you should just leave Tom McCarty and others like him out. McCarty had a very poor record right up to the end of the era, when Willard beat Johnson. His absence would be no great loss.

Cap, I hear you, but TM did beat some decent heavyweights. If it covers 1908-1915, I am planning on having at least 50 White Hope heavyweights, and ten black heavyweights(the top four of all, among them). I believe he should be there, even if I only had thirty to thirty five White Hopes included. I wish my memory was what it was on this, then I could tell you specifically who he beat, but I remember enough to know he DID beat some. If you weren't one of the better guys, he'd beat you. I'm putting Sailor White in my group(how can you leave out Sailor White, by name alone?), and Tom McCarty would have wiped the floor with the old Sailor(In fact, he may HAVE.) Sailor White got clobbered by so many different heavyweights of the period, it would be unrealistic NOT to have him out there getting clobbered, in my own White Hope Era boxing world. I'll have to snoop in my brother's attic, because the scrapbook with just about every significant White Hope Era heavyweight bout is there.
By the way, Cap, where do you get the records and photos of Tim Logan type charcters? I'm loving this, and I am very grateful to you for this info. |
