William Johnson 1871

Facepack upgrade, pictured with the 1868 Cleveland Forest Citys. The previous image pictured Johnson as an elderly man.

Johnson was a semi-pro player around Cleveland for several years and helped them out when regulars got injured.

Bob Loane 1939

Bob Loane - played 3 games with the Senators in 1939 and 13 games with the Braves in 1940.

Baseball-Reference has him playing with the Cubs-affiliated L.A. Angels in 1934 and his B-R Bullpen page mentions that he was reportedly traded to the Cubs following the 1940 season, but he retired instead.

I have several scans of him at what appears to be Wrigley Field wearing a 1939 Cubs uniform, but I can't seem to find anything to explain him with that team in that year.

Does anyone know how Mr. Loane came to be photographed with the '39 Cubs?

Loane

No luck finding out anything about the Cubbies, but several papers reported on April 29th 1939 that Loane had been purchased by Springfield (Washington's farm club) from the Indianapolis Indians, a Reds affiliate, so that's another team he was associated with in '39.

I have photos of many players from the 20s and 30s wearing anachronistic uniforms. It seems that teams in that era commonly recycled uniforms for spring training and players on tryout.

A Few Requests

I'm looking for the following players in these uniforms:

Walt Lanfranconi (Braves)

Wayne Graham (Mets)

And if anyone has a better quality image of William McCarthy (1906) than the one I have attached please share.

Thanks for the assistance!

The first image was from a thecatspajamas99 ebay listing many years back; the second came from the old lexibell files.
