Tiger Fan,
Just a quick question. Where did you get the boxing rating in the various weight classes? Are they historical or TBCB produced?

HORSE RACING
PHALANX WINS THE PREAKNESS
Veteran jockey Eddie Arcaro and Phalanx led from wire-to-wire to win the second leg of horse racing's triple crown. Phalanx, the favourite to win, covered the mile and 3/16 track at Pimlico in 1:59 2/5. He was a length and a half ahead of runner up On Trust. Star Reward a 12-1 longshot took third just ahead of Faultless. Derby winner Jet Pilot was slow out of the gate and then got boxed in on the final turn, finishing a dissappointing 7th.

The third and final leg of the Triple Crown, The Belmont, will be held at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 16th.

In real life Faultless won the Preakness in 1:59 even, with On Trust second and Phalanx finishing third.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
BYRD LEADS YANKS TO AGAIN
Veteran New York Yankee outfielder Sammy Byrd drove in 5 runs as the Yanks doubled St Louis 8-4 in American League action. It has been quite a start to the weekend for the 39 year old as he drove in 4 runs against the Browns on Friday. For the season Byrd has 17 rbi's meaning he more than doubled his season production in the past 2 games.

Elsewhere, Ted Williams had 3 hits and drove in 3 runs as Boston topped Philadelphia 5-2. In Cleveland Tom Hafey hit a pair of solo homers and a bases loaded double as visiting Chicago dropped the Indians 8-2. Hafey leads the American League with 9 homeruns on the season. Barney McCoskey's grand slam led Detroit past the Senators in Washington by a 7-4 count.

In the National League Harlond Clift hit his major league leading 10th homerun as Chicago downed Pittsburgh 3-1. Arnold Carter tossed a 5-hitter in Cincinnati as the Reds blasted the Giants 10-0. Mike Kreevich's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th scored Jackie Robinson with the winning run as Brooklyn trimmed Philadelphia 3-2. Finally, in Boston Sam Chapman's 3 run homer in the 8th inning proved the difference as the Braves beat St Louis 5-2.

BOXING
ORTIZ GETS BACK TO WINNING WAYS
Manuel Ortiz easily outpointed fellow Californian Tony Olivera in a 15 round bantamweight fight in Los Angeles last night. Ortiz, who was 38-0-2 before losing his last two fights, sent Olivera to the canvas on three occassions, twice with bruising body blows. Olivera, who's left eye was swollen shut midway through the bout, displayed tremendous courage carrying on until the final bell.

For Ortiz, the victory is important after back to back losses to Fernando Gagnon and Luis Galvani but it would have been much impressive had he been able to knock out Olivera. In several rounds he had the San Francisco native just barely hanging on but in each instance Ortiz was unable to finish off the job.

In other boxing notes 20 year old Jeffrey xSmith won his professional debut knocking out journeyman Colion Chaney in the 7th round of their scheduled 10 round bout in Indianapolis. The fight is noteworthy because xSmith, a native of LeClaire, Iowa was tabbed as a possible member of the US team for the 1948 Olympics before he elected to give up his amateur status.

GOLF - BING CROSBY PRO-AM
OLIVER WINS IN A PLAYOFF
Ed Oliver birdied the first playoff hole to defeat Bobby Locke and win the Bing Crosby Pro-Am Tournament at 3 courses in Monterey, California. Oliver carded a 3 on the par 4 16th hole to defeat the South African as darkness was setting in. Shortly before Locke birdied the last two holes to force the playoff with Oliver, who had birdied 18 himself a couple of groups ahead of Locke.

Ben Hogan finished third. The top amateur was William xScarborough III. The 25 year old from Bucks County, Pennsylvania shot 3 under 69 on the final day at the Pebble Beach Golf Links to finish one stroke ahead of Californian John Dawson.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - ROB KIRKTON
For the first time in his 4 year college career Rob Kirkton did not play on a championship team as his Oklahoma A&M squad failed to win the Big 8 conference tournament for the first time in 4 years. Nevertheless, Kirkton still enjoyed a productive senior season and may just be a first round selection in next month's NBA draft. The 5'10" point guard is not expected to be a dominant NBA player, but he should have the skills to start somewhere in the league and with the lack of quality PG's in the draft he might just be the first one at his position to hear his name called.

Kirkton is Oklahoma A&M's all time leader in free throws made and attempted.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
INDIANS BEAT WHITE SOX BUT LOSE PASSEAU
The Cleveland Indians will be without pitcher Claude Passeau for 2 months after the righthander injured his back in a 3-1 win over Chicago. Passeau had made 9 appearances for the Tribe this season including 5 starts. He was 2-1 with a 4.15 era and had 3 saves. The 38 year old was 13-16 a year ago as the Tribe's number 4 starter. His best season was 1941 when he was 26-10 and won the American League Cy Young Award.

28 year old Bob Feller will take Passeau's spot in the rotation. Feller was 9-15 as a rookie in 1939 but because of a numbers game spent most of his first 4 seasons in the bullpen. A serious arm in 1942 derailed his career and he has been a minor leagues ever since.

In Boston, first baseman Babe Young drove in both runs as the Red Sox beat Philadelphia 2-1. Ted Williams had 2 more hits for the Red Sox making him 8 for 11 in his last 3 games.

Joe Haynes went the distance improving his record to 5-3 as Washington dumped Detroit 7-2 while Dizzy Dean suffered his third straight loss after starting the season 5-0 in the Yankees 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Browns in St Louis.

PREACHER KEEPS ROE-LLING ALONG
Preacher Roe improved his record to 8-0 as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped Chicago 5-3 in National League play. A three run double from catcher Tom Padden made the job much easier for his battery-mate.

Mel Ott hit his first homer of the season and 406th of his career as the New York Giants outslugged Cincinnati 10-6. The 38 year old Ott is fifth alltime in homers and number one among active players.

1- Jimmie Foxx 622
2- Lou Gehrig 616
3- Babe Ruth 615
4- Hack Wilson 481
5- Mel Ott 406

Joe Gordon hit a pair of homeruns and Charley Schanz improved his record to 7-2 as Philadelphia beat Brooklyn 7-4. In the other game Sam Chapman had 3 hits to help Boston double St Louis 4-2.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
MELTON THROWS ONE-HITTER
After a terrible start to the season in the bullpen most observers thought the Boston Red Sox were nuts to put Rube Melton back in the starting rotation. The move certainly paid off yesterday as Melton did a near perfect imitation of his 4-time Cy Young Award winning cousin Cliff, 1-hitting the Philadelphia Athletics in a 1-0 Red Sox victory. The only A's hit was a first inning double off the bat of 3B Dario Lodigiani. Boston managed 7 hits off of Philadelphia starter Bill Voiselle with Johnny Hudson's 8th inning rbi single to score Johnny Pesky accounting for the only run of the game.

There were plenty of hits in Washington - 28 to be exact - as Detroit beat the Senators 12-10 in a wild game. Detroit, trailing 7-1, scored 3 times in the 8th and 5 more runs in the top of the 9th to take a 9-7 lead only to see the Sens tie the game with 2 in the bottom of the 9th. Rookie Bobby Thomson's second career homer, a 3-run shot in the 11th, gave the Tigers a 12-9 lead. Washington could only reply with one run in the home half and went down to defeat.

In St Louis, the Browns overcame an early 2-0 deficeit and rallied to beat the Yankees 3-2.

In the National League, Cincinnati rookie Art Houtteman ran his record to 6-2 after pitching 8 innings of 4-hit ball in the Reds 5-2 win over New York. Joe Dimaggio hit a 2-run double for the winners in his first game back after missing 2 weeks with a hip injury.

Pinch-hitter Joe Marty's 2 run homer in the top of the 7th proved the difference as the Chicago Cubs doubled Pittsburgh 4-2. Stan Ferens improved to 3-1 as the St Louis Cardinals beat Boston by the same 4-2 count while Joe Gordon's 8th homer of the season helped launch Philadelphia past Brooklyn 6-3.

Major league notes: Ted Williams of Boston and Reds pitcher Arnold Carter were the players of the week. Williams was 11 for 20 with a homerun and 5 rbi's to claim American League weekly honours for the 8th time in his career. Carter wins his 3rd career player of the week award after going 2-0 with a 1.06 era last week.....Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Cliff Melton comes off the disabled list today and will likely start in Philadelphia on Wednesday. The 4 time Cy Young winner was 3-1 with a 3.07 era before suffering back spasms a little over 2 weeks ago. The Pirates have yet to announce whether Ken Heintzelman (3-4, 5.77) or Jim Tobin (5-1, 3.74) will be bumped out of the rotation. They appear to be committed to keeping rookie Vic Raschi (1-2, 2.57) with the big club for now and as long as he is in Pittsburgh he will be in the rotation.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - 4 PRINCETON TIGERS MAY BE DRAFTED
In 1945 three members of the University of Illinois basketball team were selected in the NBA draft. It was the first time in the 13 year history of the draft three players from the same school were selected in the same year. Three Princeton Tigers have a good chance to duplicate that feat in next month's draft and may even go one better.

Junior SG Bob Davis is certain to be selected, likely in the middle of the first round while junior SG DC *Wilcutt is a likely second round pick. Senior center Lloyd Chambers and senior SF Saul *Mariaschin may also hear their names called in the second round.

Davis and Wilcutt are two of the very few basketball players at Princeton to play regularly as freshmen. Chambers seems to be a long shot to have much success in the NBA but at his height (6'11") a team will likely take a chance on him in the second round. *Mariaschin saw little action his first two years but finally became a starter as a junior. He emerged as the team leader his senior season.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL OFFSEASON NOTES
PLENTY OF HOLES TO FILL IN PRINCETON
With a first round exit in both the Ivy League and NCAA tournaments 1947 ended on a sour note for the Princeton Tigers despite a conference best 12-2 record during the season. The news went from bad to worse when Princeton fans learned that the club's two junior guards would both skip their senior season and turn pro. That news coupled with the graduation of center Lloyd Chambers and SF Saul *Mariaschin left the Tigers with just one returning starter.

The good news is, like every year, the Tigers have plenty of talent waiting in the wings. Tony *Lavelli, who started a PF last year, will likely shift to center to make room for Ernie *Vandeweghe. SF Devonte Firsch looks ready to step up and contribute full time. The backcourt may be cause for concern. If last years guard tandem of Bob *Davis and DC *Wilcutt had elected to return for their senior season, the Tigers would be looking at a National championship contender. As it is now, if sophomore Damon Barlau and one of the 6 freshman recruits don't step up the Tigers may be hard pressed to make the tournament field.

I have an idea for your newspaper. You could perhaps start selecting sportsmen of the month, and at the end of the year select sportsmen of the year for all sports and then from those select a sportsmen of the year for all sports combined.
Just an idea.

Just an idea.

I did already have the sportsman of the year (it was Sid Luckman of the Chicago Bears - see posts 150-154 in this thread for the 1946 year end issue) but the sportsman of the month is a good idea. It will debut on June 1 and I am certainly open to suggestions of who is worthy.

Right now for May I would think Preacher Roe of the Pirates and Indians hurler Bill Lohrman would be in the mix. With the other 3 big sports all in the offseason and no dominant horse in the first two legs of the triple crown I would think May will belong to the top baseball player - unless we see something special in the Indy 500 or the final PGA events of the month.

Great work TF, wonderful idea to have the "celebs" in the charity golf tournament!

Have you decided to fast-forward yet?

Also, an award I would enjoy seeing would be "Best Sports City." I believe TSN does this IRL, and perhaps it would be a nice piece for one of your June editions.

On the fast-forward idea. I think it would be very difficult time-wise for me to 'quick sim' to the 1970's or so simply because of the scope of things. Editing the TDCB and TPF rookie pools takes a few hours each year and adding in the real college football schedule also takes a fair amount of time. This means that I may go 3-4 months of real time with very little in the way of updates on this sports universe.

Plus I have developed a real attachment to the league at it's current state. As much as I want to see the final results on where the careers of Sid Luckman, Bob Cousy, Otto Graham and the rest end up, I think taking the time to enjoy the ride is far more gratifying than just seeing the final numbers.

A partial solution if no one objects is to speed through from May 1-August 20 each year simming the entire segment and post basic results in about a week or two of real time. The reason I suggest those months is aside from golf and the occassional boxing match, only the baseball season is in full swing. I do not think we would sacrifice a lot by getting just a once a month standing report during these months and come September my articles would fill in a lot of the back story on what happened over the summer in baseball.

I feel this would greatly speed up the replay without sacrificing much of the detail I have come to enjoy in doing this. Does anyone think this is a bad idea?

Nice idea, but a tough decision. We have Pittsburgh and Cleveland as the baseball powerhouses recently, Chicago a dominant NFL team, Notre Dame and Army were dominant in college football but Texas may have a say in things this year. Detroit won the Stanley Cup. Kentucky is the class of college basketball but the New York schools (NYU, CCNY), Alabama and Holy Cross are consistantly strong. Dallas won the NBA title. Really no city right now with a couple of champions.

I know that is just one category in choosing best sports city but since I cant gauge attendance and fan excitement it is the only criteria I can go by.

I am open for suggestions if anyone feels which city is the Best Sports City of 1947.

Personally, I've enjoyed the pace of this replay. But the bottom line is what do you think is best--I understand because of the scope how a day to day (even week to week) is a strain on your time. My suggestion is keep it variable--don't lock yourself in. Some streches will lend itself to week to week or month to month, but a pennant race or an exciting golf tourny (oxymoron?) would be better served by a day to day. Stay flexible, work at a pace you think fits best for that time.

I second the notion, Tiger Fan. I understand you wanting to sim ahead for the summer and if that's what you feel best, by all means go for it. It's a great read as it is.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : THURSDAY MAY 31, 1947
As mentioned above I am going to move a little quicker through the summer months since there is much less going on. Here is a recap of the happenings over the final week of May. I will post info only on key events between now and mid-August. Then I will go back to the daily reports as there will be much more going on at that time with baseball pennant races heating up and the NFL getting underway. Hopefully no one minds this quick sim through the middle of the baseball season.

INDIANAPOLIS 500
ROSE TAKES CHECKERED FLAG AT THE BRICKYARD
Thanks to engine trouble from teammate Bill Holland, Mauri Rose managed to claim his first Indianapolis 500 title. Rose took the lead on lap 169 when Holland was forced to retire with a blown engine. Prior to that point Holland, who was the pole-sitter, led the entire race. Rose, who had a dissappointing qualifying weekend, started 19th on the grid but had moved up to 5th by lap 30 and on lap 37 took over second spot. He would remain in second until Holland's troubles occurred. The average speed was 119.552 mph and the race took 4 hours and 11 minutes to complete. There were 6 cautions and just the one lead change. Rex Mays finished second.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
INDIANS STRETCH LEAD TO 7.5 GAMES
The Cleveland Indians are running away with the American League but they did suffer a serious blow when ace Bill Lohrman (9-0, 1.15) was sidelined with a shoulder injury that will force him to miss at least 6 weeks. The Indians should still be fine with Steve Gromek (8-0, 3.68) and an impressive showing from longtime minor leaguer Bob Feller (2-0, 1.62) after a recent promotion to the big leagues. The Indians have won 11 of their last 14 games while second place New York is 5-9 during the same stretch.

Pittsburgh continues to hold down top spot in the National League but the hottest team in the senior circuit is Philadelphia. Behind the pitching of Charlie Schanz (8-3, 3.29) and the hitting of Bobby Estalella (.341,2,19),Joe Gordon (.206,8,22), Buster Adams (.281,7,27) and Del Ennis (.267,4,26) the Phillies have won 9 of their last 11 and now trail the Pirates by just 2 games.

LOHRMAN AND ROE WIN PITCHER OF MONTH AWARDS
For the 5th time in his career Bill Lohrman has been named the American League pitcher of the month. Lohrman was 6-0 for the Indians before being sidelined for 6 weeks in his final start of the month. Preacher Roe was 7-1 in 8 starts for Pittsburgh to claim the National League award for the first time in his career.

Babe Young of Boston was named the American League player of the month after hitting .333 with 6 homers and 25 rbi's in May. It is the second time Young has been so honoured. Pittsburgh 3B Bob Elliott is the National League's top performer. Elliot hit .387 with 5 homers and 22 rbi's last month.

CANDINI COMES WITHIN ONE OUT OF PERFECTION
Washington hurler Milo Candini came within one out of tossing the fourth perfect game in major league history last Saturday. Dario Lodigiani broke up the bid with a 2-out double in the bottom of the 9th inning. Roy Cullenbine would follow with a single to foil the shutout but Candini and the Senators would hang on for a 4-1 win.

GOLF
SAN DIEGO OPEN
25 year old Doug Ford outplayed the legendary Ben Hogan on the final 18 holes to claim his first career PGA event. Ford entered Sunday's final round trailing Hogan by 3 strokes but ended up gaining 6 on Hogan to win the title easily. Born in West Haven, Connecticut, Ford originally dreamed of playing for the New York Yankees but instead followed in his father's footsteps, a club professional in Yonkers.

Next week's stop is the Texas Open in San Antonio.

BOXING
MOORE, BRATTON IN LINE FOR TITLE SHOTS
Lightheavyweight Archie Moore improved his record to 32-2 with a 15-round decision over Pennsylvania native Tommy Yarosz in Philadelphia. Moore, the number one contender for champion Lloyd Marshall's World title, was in complete control of the fight and won handily on all 3 scorecards. Yarosz, who was ranked 6th in the division entering the fight, falls to 26-8-2. He had a title shot against Marshall last September and lost to the champ by a 9th round knockout. With the victory Moore will get a title shot against Marshall likely in September.

A pair of top welterweight contenders squared off in Chicago for the right to meet Sugar Ray Robinson for the World Title. Chicago native Johnny Bratton won a hard fought unanimous decision over Jackie Wilson. Bratton improves to 23-3-1 with the victory and will face Robinson in the late fall or early winter. Wilson, a Los Angeles native, falls to 28-4-1.

On the undercard of the Bratton-Wilson fight, journeyman Ray Barnes scored a majority decision over Rocco xDiSaldo in a 10 round middleweight bout. One judge had it even while the other two favoured Barnes by a single point over the youngster who was making his professional debut.

LAMOTTA LOOKS SHARP IN RETURN TO RING
Former World Middleweight Champion Jake LaMotta had an easy time at Madison Square Garden against fellow New Yorker Steve Belloise. LaMotta, at times looking like he was toying with his opponent, won a lobsided unanimous decision to improve to 15-1. It was his first fight since a surprising upset loss to Tony Zale for the Middleweight Title in January. Belloise is 19-6.

On the undercard promising middlweight Jose Basora of Puerto Rico scored a 6th round knockout of Australian Ron Richards. Basora improves to 29-2 and is moving towards a title shot. Richards is 8-2-1 and has not faced very stiff competition.

EUROPEAN BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE MATCHUP SET
Britian's Johnny King will meet Italian Guido Ferracin for the vacant European Bantamweight Title after each won a qualifying match last week. The title became vacant when Luis Romero of Spain defeated Fernando Gagnon for the World Bantamweight Title earlier in the month. When Romero stepped down a 4-man tournament was set up to determine a new European Champion.

King scored a narrow split decision victory over Poland's Benny Goldberg in one semi-final while Ferracin easily outpointed Joe Cornelis of Belgium in the other semi. King, with a record of 36-6, will face Ferracin, 28-6-2, for the European Title on July 5th in Paris. King and Ferracin met in the World post-war bantamweight tournament with King claiming a unanimous decision victory.

On the undercard a pair of German fighters had impressive pro debuts. Lightheavyweight Rudel xDietrich knocked out Spain's Paco Bueno in the first round of their scheduled 15 round bout. Bueno was sent to the floor with a punishing body blow from xDietrich 30 seconds into the bout. He managed to continue but just over a minute later was down for the count as xDietrich landed a vicious combination. Bueno is 8-22-1 in a certainly less than stellar career. Heavyweight Jurgen xHucke scored a majority decision by the narrowest of margins over Italian Gino Buonvino in his debut. Buonvino's record drops to 5-19.

In other bantamweight action last week, Japan's Hiroski Horiguchi improved to 24-12-2 with an unanimous decision over Cris Crispin of the Phillipines.

IRISHMAN DORAN WINS EUROPEAN BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE
Ed Doran recovered from a first round knockdown and went on to win a unanimous decision over Frenchman Louis Skena to claim the vacant European Bantamweight Title. Doran improves to 16-3 and is ranked 11th in the World. Skena falls to 17-5-1.

SADDLER SCORES VICTORY
In his first bout since losing the post-war Bantamweight Title tournament final to Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler looked very impressive stopping Henry Armstrong with a 10th round TKO. Saddler, who is 23-2 with both losses coming against Pep, is rated the number one contender for Pep's title. For Armstrong it was just his second loss to go against 30 victories and drops him behind Saddler in the featherweight rankings.

Speaking of Pep, the champion's camp has announced he will defend his World Title in St Louis on August 11 against Charlie Riley. A couple of weeks ago Riley beat Harold Hoshino to earn the title shot. Riley, a St Louis native, is 23-4. Pep has a perfect post-war record of 18-0. His last bout was an unanimous decision over European champ Ray Famechon in Boston on April 26th.

thanks to you and Vris for the feedback. As I have mentioned a couple of times I am torn between wanting to take it slow and follow day by day and the desire to see how careers pan out.

I think the approach to quick sim through the summer works best because there is so much less going on then as compared to September-October when we get football in full swing and hockey and basketball preparing to begin plus hopefully a tight pennant race or two. Also I am dying to get to the next basketball season so I can get playing TPB05

Hopefully no one is upset with this slight format change. I will still have an article on each of the golf events, the Belmont, the NBA draft and any key baseball happenings over the next month.

BRAVES TAKE ALABAMA'S ODIE *SPEARS FIRST OVERALL
The Buffalo Braves selected Alabama power forward Odie *Spears with the first pick in the NBA draft. Spears, who decided to skip his senior season at Alabama and enter the draft, averaged 13.5 ppg and 12.0 rpg last year. He also played a key role on Bama's National Championship team two years ago.

The Kentucky Colonels dissappointed their hometown fans by passing on former UK stars Jack *Rocker and Paul *Noel. The Colonels instead opted for CCNY SF Varun Hunter with the second overall pick. Rocker went 6th to New Orleans while Noel slipped to 20th where he was taken by Baltimore.

Some of the surprises included the Boston Celtics grabbing Ben *Schadler with the 4th overall pick. Most experts had the former Providence star penciled in as a second round selection. There were surprises the other way as well. Oklahoma A&M PG Rob Kirkton was considered a first round talent but went undrafted. Kentucky's Paul *Noel was considered a top 10 pick but slipped all the way to 20th.

BILLY CONN GETS NOTICED IN UK BOUT
After being unsuccessful in attempts to line up a bout with either World Lightheavyweight champion Lloyd Marshall or any of the top American contenders, Pittsburgh's Billy Conn had to head to England for a fight. Conn made people take notice after winning a unanimous decision over European champ Freddie Mills in London. The victory improves Conn's record to 28-1-2 and will make it even tougher for the World Champion to keep avoiding him. For Mills, who falls to 32-14-1, the loss all but ends any world title aspirations he might have.

Just some info as to why I havent added much the last few days. It appears my cpu is on it's last legs - it keeps shutting down for no apparent reason and will not restart for about 10 minutes afterwards - so I was busy trying to back up all of my TSN files to cd as well as update my baseball photos. Everything I believe I need is now safely stored on disk.

If I suddenly dissappear for a week or so it just means the old cpu has bit the dust and I am shopping around for a new one.

The plan, if things are working tonight, is to update everything to the end of July and go back to the daily reports August 1st. I found the day to day baseball recaps just a little dry as there was not enough else going on but by the beginning of August I will hopefully have a pennant race or two to cover, NFL and college football seasons preparing to start, with basketball and the NHL just over the horizon.

As I said earlier, I hope no one minds me skipping ahead through the mid-summer months of June and July.

Great as always and I look forward to the next installments when you have the time

thanks. Now that I have everything backed up all will be fine. Was planning on getting a new system in the next 6 months or so anyway so depending on how long this one hangs on it may just speed the process up.
