Cleveland went 17-11 in May to maintain a lead in the AL. Detroit went just 13-15 and slipped to second. The White Sox went 16-12 this month, thanks largely to the return of Dex Wolfe, who went 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA in 4 May starts.

St. Louis struggled at 14-13 in May, but kept their lead over the NL. No other team quite took advantage of it, except the Cubs who went 16-11 to pull into 2nd Place. Meanwhile, the highly touted Giants went just 15-13 this month, but, along with Brooklyn, are just 4 games back

Batters of the Month:

AL - Owyn Cuffie, CF, Boston Red Sox - He hit .379 with 24 RBI and 15 runs scored. At age 39, I believe he is the oldest player to be named BOTM.

NL - Terrey "Spikes" Christiansen, 3B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .351 with 33 RBI, 15 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Rob Greenwald, Cleveland Indians - He was 5-2 with a 1.54 ERA and 1 shutout.

NL - Michael McAinsh, New York Giants - He was 7-0 with a 4.29 ERA.

Code:
American League Standings

Cleveland 32 19 .627 -
Chicago (A) 27 23 .540 4.5
Detroit 26 24 .520 5.5
Washington 25 25 .500 6.5
Boston (A) 24 26 .480 7.5
Philadelphia (A) 22 27 .449 9.0
New York (A) 23 29 .442 9.5
St. Louis (A) 22 28 .440 9.5

National League Standings

St. Louis (N) 30 20 .600 -
Chicago (N) 26 23 .531 3.5
Brooklyn 26 24 .520 4.0
New York (N) 26 24 .520 4.0
Cincinnati 24 25 .490 5.5
Pittsburgh 24 25 .490 5.5
Philadelphia (N) 23 27 .460 7.0
Boston (N) 20 31 .392 10.5

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .268 with 11 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .220 with 16 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy went 0-3 with a 4.97 ERA in 4 games (3 starts).

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .352 with 14 RBI, 23 runs scored and 5 home runs! I feel pretty confident that hitting 5 homers in one month is a major league record. He easily leads the NL with 7.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .358 with 7 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert went 3-3 with a 4.11 in 6 starts.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .264 with 15 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky should return to the lineup on June 1st, 2 weeks earlier than expected.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .396 with 10 RBI, 21 runs scored and another 9 stolen bases.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 2-3 with a 3.22 ERA in 7 starts. Unfortunately, he suffered a talent hit - his talent in avoiding hits and homers both dropped. Luckily for him, the talent for avoiding homers is of little consequence in this current era. There have been a number of great pitchers so far in the league with a weakness for allowing homers.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Will fractured his ankle on May 4th and missed 3 weeks this month. In just 11 games, he hit .293 with 6 RBI and 7 runs scored.

Thomas Strasser, 1B, Cleveland - Thomas hit .243 with 7 RBI and 9 runs scored. He was perfect in 9 stolen base attempts.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge is still in AAA.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 2-4 with a 3.63 ERA over 7 starts.

Cleveland went 16-10 this month and gained a game in the standings on Chicago. The White Sox again lost starter Dex Wolfe, who strained the same shoulder he injured in April. He was lost on June 4th and should return around the 7th of July. New York's Jassen Nelson pitched a perfect game against the Red Sox on June 29th, adding another merit to his lofty credentials. It was the first perfect game in American League history. The only other perfect game ever thrown was by Cincinnati's Cecil Tan in 1909.

The Cardinals had another mediocre month, going just 13-14. That allowed the Giants to take over first around the middle of the month. New York never took more than a 1-game lead though, and both teams battled for the lead off-and-on for the remainder of June.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Joe Cath, 1B, Detroit Tigers - He hit .314 with 20 RBI, 20 runs scored and 4 home runs!

NL - George Knapp, LF, New York Giants - He hit .419 with 25 RBI and 18 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 6-1 with a 0.91 ERA and 3 shutouts.

NL - Allen Albertini, Brooklyn Robins - He was 5-0 with a 0.71 ERA and 2 shutouts.

Code:
American League Standings

Cleveland 48 29 .623 -
Chicago (A) 42 34 .553 5.5
Washington 39 38 .506 9.0
Detroit 38 38 .500 9.5
New York (A) 36 41 .468 12.0
Boston (A) 35 41 .461 12.5
St. Louis (A) 35 42 .455 13.0
Philadelphia (A) 33 43 .434 14.5

National League Standings

St. Louis (N) 43 34 .558 -
New York (N) 42 34 .553 .5
Brooklyn 40 37 .519 3.0
Cincinnati 38 38 .500 4.5
Pittsburgh 38 39 .494 5.0
Chicago (N) 37 38 .493 5.0
Philadelphia (N) 37 40 .481 6.0
Boston (N) 31 46 .403 12.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .402 with 2 RBI and 17 runs scored. That's closer to the Whiskey we've grown to know and love. His season average rose dramatically to .320.

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .256 with 10 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy went 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA in 2 starts.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .354 with 14 RBI, 18 runs scored and another 2 home runs. He now has 10 on the season, and the major league record of 16 is within sight. That record was set by fellow Giant "Moneybags" Tatum in 1913. By the way, at age 27, Ditty already has 48 career homers. Ruth hit 29 homers in one season at age 24 (1919).

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .309 with 10 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert went 1-5 with a 5.54 in 7 starts.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .315 with 14 RBI and 6 runs scored.

Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Upon returning, Flaky hit .386 with 9 RBI and 17 runs scored. He is currently suffering from a concussion after being hit by a pitch on June 26th.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hurt his elbow on June 11th and should be out until July 5th. In just 10 June games, he hit .194 with 6 RBI and 3 runs scored.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 4-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 6 starts including a shutout.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Will jammed his finger on June 17th and missed the rest of the month. In 13 games, he hit .353 with 5 RBI, 9 runs scored and 5 stolen bases.

Thomas Strasser, 1B, Cleveland - Thomas hit .281 with 10 RBI, 4 runs scored and 6 stolen bases.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge is still in AAA.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 1-5 with a 3.89 ERA over 6 starts including a shutout.

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING ALL PLAYER PAGES

August 1, 1916

The White Sox were hot at 16-10 this month, but Cleveland was nearly unstoppable at 19-6. One big move the Indians made that has really paid off was moving longtime reliever Curtis Snyder into the rotation where he could make a bigger impact on the team. At that he has: He is 14-7 with a 2.57 ERA in his first shot as a starter. He is a big reason why the Indians, long known for their offense, are ranked #1 in pitching across the majors. Also thanks to Snyder's performance, the Indians were able to trade starting pitcher Rob Greenwald to the Browns for impressive first baseman Eric Bates.

St. Louis put together their best month since April, by going 15-10. The big news is the Giants, who imploded at 8-18 in July. That dropped them below .500 and a full 8 games off the lead. Cincinnati pulled into 2nd place by going 15-10, but remain 4.5 games back.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Michael Wrightson, 1B, Boston Red Sox - He hit .347 with 23 RBI, 15 runs scored and 3 home runs.

NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .438 with 14 RBI and 18 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Don Guillemin, Boston Red Sox - He was 6-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 2 shutouts.

NL - Cecil Tan, Cincinnati Reds - He was 7-0 with a 1.27 ERA.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .405 with 14 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert went 4-2 with a 2.87 in 6 starts.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 2-4 with a 5.36 ERA over 7 starts including a shutout.

September 1, 1916

The White Sox have been hot, but Cleveland went on a 10-game winning streak early in August. Around that time, they actually won 14 of 16. Overall, they went 21-8 in August and have jumped out to a twelve game lead.

St. Louis went 17-11, which was just enough to maintain a 4.5 game lead over Cincinnati. The Reds had hot and cold spots in the month and were unable to gain any ground on the Cardinals. These two teams play each other 6 times over the first 15 days of September. Those games could likely decide the division. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they lost their #2 starter, Jeffrey Roland, for the season with a torn muscle in his arm. Roland led the Cardinals rotation through the World Series last year after the team lost their ace, Tim "Presto" Lopresto, to an injury.

On another injury note, Red Sox ace Dorsey MacIntyre will likely call it a career after rupturing a disc in his back. MacIntyre has been the best pitcher in the history of the American League's Boston franchise. He was 15-8 with a 2.50 ERA this season, and over his career has accumulated a 169-148 record with a 2.85 ERA. Those numbers are particularly impressive when you consider the poor Red Sox teams he has been a part of. This also puts a huge dent in Boston's attempt at building a contender, considering their #2 starter Will Haggan is 38-years-old.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland Indians - He hit .452 with 20 RBI and 17 runs scored.

NL - "Chump" Blair, RF, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .416 with 24 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 5-1 with a 1.43 ERA.

NL - Tim "Presto" Lopresto, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 6-1 with a 1.37 ERA including 1 shutout.

Code:
American League Standings

Cleveland 88 43 .672 -

New York (A) 63 68 .481 25.0
Detroit 60 71 .458 28.0
Washington 60 71 .458 28.0

St. Louis (A) 54 77 .412 34.0

National League Standings

St. Louis (N) 75 55 .577 -
Cincinnati 71 60 .542 4.5
Chicago (N) 66 65 .504 9.5

Pittsburgh 62 68 .477 13.0
Boston (N) 54 76 .415 21.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey was named POTW on August 30th and BOTM (see above). He is now 2nd in the AL batting race with a .341 average, but he still trails Chicago's Jed Burke by 46 points.

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .319 with 15 RBI and 13 runs scored. He is currently suffering from a pulled muscle in his back.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy went 1-0 with a 5.00 ERA in just 1 start.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .356 with 19 RBI, 15 runs scored and 2 home runs. He now has 12 longballs on the season, 4 short of the major league record, but teammate Jared Jarry still leads the league with 13.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .365 with 12 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert went 3-1 with a 3.36 in 7 starts. With the loss of Roland, he is now the team's #2 starter.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .204 with 11 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .360 with 10 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .288 with 9 RBI, 21 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 4-2 with a 2.64 ERA in 7 starts including 2 shutouts. At age 21, Ned has already become one of the premier pitchers in the AL.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Will returned to the lineup on August 20th. In 10 games, he hit .316 with 1 RBI, 3 runs scored and 4 stolen bases.

Thomas Strasser, 1B, Cleveland - Thomas hit .321 with 5 RBI, 12 runs scored and 8 stolen bases in limited action. He has been playing more games back in his natural position, left field, and the Indians will try him as the everyday player there starting in September. He will also be their leadoff hitter.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge was promoted to the major league roster but has not seen any action yet.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 4-3 with a 3.73 ERA over 7 starts including a shutout.
