Someone could have mentioned that I forgot to change the old calendar out for a new one...
I have been reporting the wrong year since Opening Day.... Had to go back and edit EVERY post.... It might be why our record has not improved over last year; they thought is was still last year..... |

Today is Barry Finney's 27th birthday! Another left going against us, so we have to wait for the first Major League start of 1B Jack Washburn (20-L). Hopefully, we can get him in the game today. Jacksonville Jays (18-29 .383 11 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at Buffalo Bombers (24-23 .511 3 GB tied for 5th place in the Northern Division) JAX: Ernesto Noyola (22-R) (2-1 5.55 ERA 24.1 IP, 33 H, 5 HR, 12 BB, 13 SO) Rookie vs. BUF: Matt Nielson (32-L) (4-3 4.01 ERA 60.2 IP, 56 H, 6 HR, 20 BB, 30 SO) Noyola lost his last start with 5 runs allowed on 8 hits, 3 home runs and 1 walk with no strikeouts in 5 innings. CF Cal Doty (25-L) has been cleared to play by Trudy the Trainer! So he was activated from the DL and LF Joe Roberts (31-L), 1 for 14 (.073) since being call up, was sent back to Daytona (A). The first returns of the All-Star balloting have been released by the League and no one from the Jays is listed among the leaders.... I am hopeful, though, that we will get at least one player on the roster this season. RP Bill Grant (31-L) is certainly pitching well enough. CF Cal Doty and 3B Marty Eades (30-R) were candidates before they went down with injury. Rookie Glen Lewis (21-L) and P Jim Baucom (20-L) have a chance if they step it up in June. 3B Brian Porter is hitting well enough, but needs to keep it up, which is doubtful, and he has only started 16 games. Jacksonville Jays (20-29 .408 11 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at Buffalo Bombers (24-25 .490 4 GB in 7th place in the Northern Division) JAX: Jim Baucom (20-L) (3-3 2.75 ERA 72 IP, 64 H, 4 HR, 21 BB, 45 SO) Rookie vs. BUF: Marty Hunter (33-R) (4-1 4.63 ERA 46.2 IP, 54 H, 6 HR, 14 BB, 29 SO) Baucom gave up 2 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk with 4 strikeouts in 6.1 innings last time out in a no decision that we won. Hunter was 11-11 with a 4.30 ERA in 198.2 IP last year. He was 1-0 in 2 starts against us with a 5 hit shutout and a 3.55 ERA. 12.2 IP, 11 H, 1 HR, 2 BB, 9 SO. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Cal Doty (25-L .307-75-1-5-.753-9 C+) 2: 2B Leander Gooding (31-R .243-177-1-15-.602-8 B+) 3: LF Glen Lewis (21-L .308-159-3-18-.836-9 C+) Rookie 4: 3B Brian Porter (34-S .299-87-3-14-.905-0 C+) 5: C Bert Swope (30-S .258-62-2-6-.754-0 B) 6: 1B Jack Washburn (20-L .429-7-2-4-1.714-0 B) Rookie 7: RF Rob Worms (29-R .204-147-4-13-.617-12 A) Gold Glove 8: SS Bart Daw (30-R .245-139-2-16-.639-5 A) 9: P Jim Baucom (20-L .000-16-0-0-.000-0 C) Rookie BUFFALO 1: 2B Dan Faust (32-R .257-187-0-11-.621-6 B) 2: CF Tom Hamm (32-R .307-189-3-21-.788-11 C+) All-Star 3: RF Ivan Moreno (30-L .321-193-17-42-1.016-1 C) 4: 1B Frank Cohen (26-R .324-182-10-24-.957-2 C+) All-Star 5: LF Mickey Lynn (29-L .202-183-10-26-.682-1 B) Silver Slugger/All-Star 6: SS Dave Lloyd (29-R .265-113-3-21-.724-0 C+) All-Star 7: 3B Roberto Lopez (25-L .395-38-1-6-1.042-0 C+) 8: C Dick Lyles (35-R .247-81-2-11-.757-0 C) 9: P Marty Hunter (33-S .250-16-0-3-.500-0 F) Game Start: 2:05 PM Ballpark: Sportsman's Park Weather: 72 F, Clear Skies, with an 11 MPH wind blowing out to left Attendance: 10,598 Top of the First: Cal Doty, who has not played in a month, swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Ivan Moreno, 6 for 14 (.429) with 2 HR and 5 RBI this series, hits a home run to left center... 1 to 0, Bombers. His third straight game with a home run... He now leads all Jay opponents... Frank Cohen swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short. Top of the Third: Rob Worms swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles to left. A wild pitch sends him to 3rd. With the infield in, Bart Daw grounds out to short, Dave Lloyd making a great stop, and Worms holds. P Jim Baucom, 0 for 16 in his career, swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit through the left side of the drawn in infield and Worms scores! Tie Game: 1 to 1. With 2 outs, Leander Gooding grounds one to short, but Dave Lloyd, who just made a great play, makes a bad throw to 2nd for an error. Glen Lewis swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run to right!!! 4 to 1, Jays! Bottom of the Third: P Marty Hunter swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit up the middle and Cal Doty overruns the ball for an error... With 1 out, Tom Hamm lines a hit to center and P Hunter heads home, but Cal Doty makes up for his error by throwing him out! Ivan Moreno doubles to center and Hamm scores... 4 to 2, Jays. Top of the Fourth: With 1 out, Jack Washburn triples to right! Rob Worms swings at the first pitch and flies out to right and Washburn tags up and scores! 5 to 2, Jays! Bottom of the Fourth: Mickey Lynn knocks an 0-2 pitch over the center fielder's head for a double... But the next three make outs! Bottom of the Seventh: With 1 out, Dick Lyles grounds an 0-2 pitch down the right field line for a double. The Bullpen gets up. With 2 outs, Dan Faust swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit up the middle and Lyles, the old slow catcher, beats the throw home... 5 to 3, Jays. Top of the Eighth: New Pitcher: Dale Kumpf (31-R), who gave us 3 runs and 2 HR in 1.2 innings on Friday. Leander Gooding swings at the first pitch and grounds a double down the left field line! P Manny Martinez (30-R) is eligible to come off the DL and we have sent him to Daytona (A) with strict instructions that he is not to pitch! If we do not get a good offer for him by the Trade deadline (in less than 3 weeks), then I guess we will let him pitch until his arm falls off... We are in Providence to play a 4 game series. The Steamrollers just lost 3 of 4 here to Richmond. They are the last team left that we have never beaten. We were 0-8 against them last season. They are tied for 3rd in scoring with 4.54 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to #13 with 3.74!). They are last in the League in stolen bases (16) and we are 2nd (55). Birmingham leads with 61. The Steamrollers are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.98 per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 4.16). Their run differential is +28, 2nd best in the League behind Charlotte (+39) and ours is -21, 3rd worst. Jacksonville Jays (21-29 .420 10 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at Providence Steamrollers (27-23 .540 1 GB in 3rd place in the Northern Division) JAX: Danny Coreano (23-L) (1-6 4.70 ERA 51.2 IP, 64 H, 3 HR, 16 BB, 24 SO) Rookie vs. PROV: Jim Riggs (32-R) (5-4 2.11 ERA 76.2 IP, 62 H, 7 HR, 16 BB, 53 SO) Hurler/All-Star Coreano's ERA was under 3 until his last 2 starts, both of which were utter disasters. He gave up 6 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk with 1 strikeout in 3 innings last time out in a no decision that we won. Riggs is 5th in the League in ERA. Last year, he was 17-9 with a 2.39 ERA in a League leading 255.2 IP. He won the Hurler Trophy and was 2nd in the Ace Award voting and led the League in shutouts with 6. He was 1-0 with a CG in 2 starts against us with a 1.69 ERA. 16 IP, 12 H, 0 HR, 0 BB, 11 SO. Bottom of the Seventh: New Pitcher: Tug Jackson (33-R). It starts to rain... Steve McKee draws a walk and tries to steal, but we have a pitchout on and C Garrett Bender throws him out! Jacksonville Jays (21-30 .412 11 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at Providence Steamrollers (28-23 .549 1 GB in 3rd place in the Northern Division) JAX: Dale Gilchrist (23-R) (1-4 4.21 ERA 47 IP, 43 H, 2 HR, 21 BB, 31 SO) Rookie vs. PROV: Jim Gibson (30-R) (3-4 6.91 ERA 41.2 IP, 52 H, 1 HR, 19 BB, 30 SO) All-Star Gilchrist gave up 3 runs on 8 hits, 1 home run and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts in 6.2 innings last time out in a loss. He is the only rookie pitcher we have, other than Jim Baucom, by the way, that I am confident will be a decent pitcher eventually. His lack of control is the only thing that will keep him from being a star. Gibson, as an All-Star last year, was 10-9 with 1 SV and a 3.59 ERA in 173 IP. He was 1-0 in 2 starts against us with a 3.68 ERA. 14.2 IP, 15 H, 0 HR, 5 BB, 6 SO. Billy Brown grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Povich goes to 3rd. Gus Milam lines out to center and Povich tags up and scores. 1 to 0, Steamrollers. Mike Hughes grounds out to 2nd. Top of the Fifth: Bert Swope walks on 4 pitches. Jack Washburn lays down a bunt and they get the force at 2nd, 3-6. Why are we bunting with him? Washburn steals 2nd, his first steal ever! With 2 outs, they walk Bart Daw intentionally to pitch to P Dale Gilchrist, but Gilchrist can hit better than Daw and he grounds a hit to left and Washburn scores! Tie Game: 1 to 1! Bottom of the Fifth: With 1 out, Andy Povich lines a hit to left. Juan Duarte swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to right and Povich goes to 3rd... Billy Brown pops out to 3rd. They again walk Bart Daw intentionally to face P Dale Gilchrist and he doubles to left center and Swope scores! 5 to 1, Jays! Bottom of the Seventh: Bill Forsyth swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit up the middle. I knew the .099 hitter would not go hitless today... PH Rich Treanor (34-R), batting .208 with 1 RBI in 24 AB, beats out an infield hit... The Bullpen gets up. With 1 out, Juan Duarte beats out an infield hit and the bases are loaded. Billy Brown grounds into a force at home, 5-2. Gus Milam walks on 4 pitches to force in a run... 5 to 2, Jays. Call to the Bullpen: Bill Grant (31-L). Tony Becerra is into play 1st in a double switch. Mike Hughes, the All-Star, pops out to center!! Top of the Ninth: New Pitcher: Jerry January (35-L), who pitched a scoreless inning yesterday. Glen Lewis doubles off the wall in center! But the next three all make outs... Won - 5 to 2 Our first win ever against the Steamrollers! There is now no team that we cannot beat! If we get enough opportunities, anyway.... We had 10 hits and made no errors Providence had 11 hits (all singles) and made no errors Dale Gilchrist (W 2-4) went 6.2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 9 hits, 3 walks, 1 HBP and struck out 2. CF Danny Stewart (31-L) has been cleared to play by Trudy the Trainer, so he was activated from the DL and LF Barry Laskowski (35-R) was sent back to Daytona (A). It should not be long before Stewart is back on the DL, though... Another week yet until we get 3B Marty Eades back. He was our best hitter before he got hurt. The way 3B Brian Porter has filled in, though, we hardly miss him! Jacksonville Jays (22-30 .423 11 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at Providence Steamrollers (28-24 .538 2 GB in 3rd place in the Northern Division) JAX: Marco Gonzalez (27-R) (0-2 6.57 ERA 12.1 IP, 15 H, 3 HR, 2 BB, 1 SO) vs. PROV: Larry Bowling (24-R) (5-5 3.16 ERA 79.2 IP, 74 H, 7 HR, 17 BB, 42 SO) Gonzalez gave up 3 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts in 7 innings in a no decision in his last start for Daytona (A). It is best not to mention his last start for the Jays... Bowling was 8-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 18 starts and 105.1 IP as a rookie last year. He was a Top 10 prospect. We faced him once and he beat us, but we scored 4 runs on 10 hits, 1 home run, no walks with no strikeouts in 7 innings. Juan Duarte grounds out to short. Gus Milam pops out to short. Mike Hughes doubles to left... Doug Bowers lines a hit to right... T.R. Hunter strikes out looking! Bottom of the Second: Tom Tye grounds a hit up the middle. Ken Barr doubles to left... Pia! A train ticket! Who should get the return ticket? I dunno.... Juan Duarte swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short! Bottom of the Third: Gus Milam leads off with a home run to left center... 2 to 0, Steamrollers. Top of the Fifth: Bart Daw pops one to center, but Scott McKee cannot hang on to the ball for an error! With 1 out, P Dalton Hartman bunts Daw to 2nd. Ken Barr swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right.... Call To the Bullpen: Roger Wallace (26-R). PH Rich Treanor (34-R), 1 for 1 with a run scored this series, grounds one to 3rd, but Brian Porter boots it and Tye scores.... 6 to 1, Steamrollers. Lost - 6 to 1 We had 4 whole hits off this bum (all singles) and made 2 errors Providence had 12 hits and made 2 errors Dalton Hartman (L 1-1) went 6 innings, allowed 3 runs, 8 hits, 2 home runs, no walks and struck out 4. Pia canceled his train ticket of her own volition. I think she has a crush on him... Anyway, I'll let him start one more game. There is no one at Daytona (A) that we can reasonably expect to do any better, except for Manny Martinez, but he is not pitching again until after the trade deadline. RHP Barry Finney went 1.2 innings, allowed 3 runs (2 earned), 4 hits, 2 home runs and struck out 1. RHP Roger Wallace got 1 out. Norm Kent (W 4-1) went 8 innings, gave us 1 unearned run, 3 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. C Bert Swope had a hit and a walk. PH Tony Becerra drew a walk and stole a base. For Providence, 1B Gus Milam had 3 hits with 2 home runs. He now has 13 HR on the season, tied for 3rd most in the League. Around the League: Charlotte made another trade, sending RF Ron Bylina (26-L) to Ottawa for P Bob Stephens (25-R) and minor league RP Miguel Tejeda (23-R). Bylina was only hitting .233 in 73 AB, but had 4 3B and 3 HR and 9 BB, good for an .818 OPS. Stephens was 3-5 with a 4.23 ERA in 9 starts, but was 9-11 with a 3.22 ERA last year. Tejeda was the #65 prospect this Spring and was 2-0 with 8 SV and 2.70 ERA in 36.2 IP for Hamilton (A). He had 24 BB, but the Hornets say they are going to try him out in the closer role for them. |

We are back in Florida, but not in Jacksonville quit yet. We are in Orlando to play a 3 game series over the weekend before we finally get to go home for an extended stay. We will have spent 26 of the last 28 days on the road after this series. The Juice were just swept in 4 games at Syracuse and have lost 7 in a row and are 2-13 in their last 15 games. They were in 1st place before that stretch started; now they are in 4th. We lost 3 of 4 the firs time we visited them, April 18-21. This will already be our final trip to the Magic Kingdom this season. The Juice are 9th in scoring with 4.11 runs per game (Jacksonville is down to #15 with 3.65). They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.04 per game (Jacksonville is #10 with 4.15 per game). Our pitching is not so great, but a lot better than the 5.40 runs per game we allowed last year! We are on pace to shave over 200 runs off the number we allowed last year! Orlando's run differential is +4 and ours is -30, now the 2nd worst in the League. Jacksonville Jays (22-32 .407 11 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at Orlando Juice (27-26 .509 5.5 GB in 4th place in the Southern Division) JAX: Jim Baucom (20-L) (4-3 2.78 ERA 81 IP, 73 H, 5 HR, 21 BB, 50 SO) Rookie vs. ORL: Larry Hemmerling (26-R) (3-5 2.95 ERA 73.1 IP, 61 H, 6 HR, 21 BB, 44 SO) Silver Slugger Baucom pitched a CG win last time out, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits, 1 home run and no walks with 5 strikeouts. Hemmerling gave us 4 runs on 7 hits, 2 home runs and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts in 7 innings in a no decision that we won in April. He is 1-4 in his last 5 starts, but did not pitch a clunker in the lot. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: LF Cal Doty (25-L .261-92-1-6-.659-10 B+) 2: 2B Leander Gooding (31-R .236-195-1-15-.583-10 B+) 3: 3B Ed Diskin (38-R .220-109-1-12-.636-4 C) 4: RF Glen Lewis (21-L .303-178-5-22-.849-10 C) Rookie 5: 1B Jack Washburn (20-L .320-25-2-6-.960-1 B) Rookie 6: C Garrett Bender (28-R .247-150-1-13-.600-0 B) 7: CF Danny Stewart (31-L .100-10-0-0-.282-0 C+) 8: SS Bart Daw (30-R .243-152-2-16-.637-6 A) 9: P Jim Baucom (20-L .050-20-0-1-.100-0 C) Rookie ORLANDO 1: 3B Ernie Patterson (21-R .316-177-1-19-.759-14 A+) Gold Glove 2: CF Ray McDonald (22-L .278-169-3-22-.762-9 C+) 3: 1B Herman Chance (32-R .296-125-4-17-.817-0 C+) 4: 2B Tom Howard (25-R .254-205-7-33-.760-16 B+) 5: C Mike Day (31-S .190-137-5-15-.601-0 C+) 6: SS Danny Hutchinson (23-R .282-142-3-17-.774-3 A) 7: LF Barry Magee (30-L .248-153-3-16-.698-3 A) 8: RF Russ Baker (22-S .195-77-0-1-.565-0 B) RoY 9: P Larry Hemmerling (26-R .286-21-0-2-.699-0 F) Silver Slugger Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Forbes Field Weather: 84 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 10 MPH wind blowing left to right Attendance: 10,095 Top of the First: Cal Doty takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4! Leander Gooding pops out to left. Ed Diskin lines out to right. Glen Lewis grounds out to 3rd... Bottom of the First: Ernie Patterson flies out to right. Ray McDonald strikes out! Herman Chance swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short! 1-2-3! Top of the Second: Jack Washburn triples to left center! Garrett Bender grounds out to short and Washburn scores. 1 to 0, Jays! Bottom of the Third: Barry Magee grounds an 0-2 pitch down the left field line for a double... Russ Baker flies out to deep center and Magee tags up and scoots over to 3rd. With the infield in, P Larry Hemmerling, the Silver Slugger, grounds out to short and Magee stays put! Ernie Patterson puts a charge in one to deep center, but Danny Stewart makes a leaping catch at the warning track!! Top of the Sixth: Cal Doty leads off with a home run to right! 2 to 0, Jays! With 1 out, Ed Diskin hits a triple to right center! And lives! They walk Glen Lewis intentionally. He steals 2nd! So they walk Jack Washburn intentionally to load the bases up with 1 out. I want to pinch-hit for Garrett Bender, but Bert Swope needs the day off for rest... Bender strikes out... Danny Stewart strikes out... Bottom of the Ninth: P Jim Baucom is at 105 pitches. Frank Wendell is in to play left. Tony Becerra, Charlie Faber and Rob Worms came in last inning to play 1st, 3rd and right, respectively. So if we give up a pair of runs, our chance of scoring again is not good... Top of their order is up. Ernie Patterson lines their third hit of the game to center... The Bullpen is up. Ray McDonald flies out to deep center. Herman Chance grounds a hit to left... Tom Howard swings at a 3-2 pitch and plunks one in front of the plate and C Garrett Bender throws in the general direction of 2nd base for a 2 base error and Patterson scores and the go ahead run is in scoring position.... 2 to 1, Jays. Call to the Bullpen: Bill Grant (31-L). Please, do not walk Mike Day intentionally. We do NOT walk Day, but P Grant throws an 0-2 pitch in the dirt and Bender cannot block it and Chance scores.... Tie Game: 2 to 2. Mike Day swings at the next pitch and pops one up to shallow left and defensive replacement Frank Wendell drops the ball for an error and Howard scores.... I truly had visions of a 2 hit shutout and now we have lost.... Their are no words to express my despair.... I did not even punch Pia.... Lost - 3 to 2 We had 5 whole hits and made 3 errors (2 in the 9th) Orlando had 4 hits and made no errors Jim Baucom (L 4-4) went 8.1 innings, allowed 3 unearned runs, 4 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit. LHP Bill Grant (BS 3) faced 1 batter and did not get him out. He threw a WP. Larry Hemmerling went 6.1 innings, gave us 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks (2 INT) and struck out 6. RHP Daniel Escarcega (W 3-2) pitched a perfect inning and struck out 1. LF Cal Doty hit his 2nd home run of the season and drew a walk. 3B Ed Diskin hit a triple. 1B Jack Washburn hit a triple, was walked intentionally and scored a run. |

Do you remember the last time we scored in the first inning? I do not... Bottom of the First: Ray McDonald fouls out to 3rd. Barry Magee flies out to right. Herman Chance pops out to right! 1-2-3! Top of the Third: Cal Doty beats out an infield hit and Leander Gooding bunts him to 2nd. Glen Lewis bloops a hit to left and Doty heads home, but gets thrown out by Barry Magee.... Gil Weaver swings at the first pitch and lines a double over Doty's head.... Mike Day swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to left and both runners score... Tie Game: 2 to 2. Roger Falbo grounds into a 4-6-3 double play! Top of the Sixth: Ed Diskin swings at the first pitch and doubles to right and goes to 3rd on a ground out. They walk Rob Worms intentionally. Charlie Faber takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with 1 out. P Danny Coreano grounds into a force at home, 1-2, but hustles and beats the throw to 1st by an eyelash! Cal Doty swings at a 2-2 pitch and doubles over the head of the center fielder and 2 runs score!! His third hit of the game! I guess he is back, now! 4 to 2, Jays! Top of the Eighth: New Pitcher: Gary Malone (38-R), with a 4.10 ERA in 26.1 IP. Rob Worms draws a walk. With 1 out, P Danny Coreano lays down a bunt, but C Mike Day throws the ball away at 1st for a 2 base error! They walk Cal Doty intentionally to load the bases up. PH Jack Washburn (20-L) is sent up and Leander Gooding is furious... Oh, well, if you were hitting .292 like last year instead of .234, we would not have done it... Washburn swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at home, 5-2... Oh, well, I made Gooding mad for nothing... Glen Lewis swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits it hard and deep to right.....GRAND SLAM!!!! 8 to 2, Jays! Now, even Gooding is happy! Top of the Ninth: On the Hill: Mike Ballou (25-R), who got the last out of the 8th. 1B Tony Becerra (33-L), who came on for defense last inning, draws a walk. Bert Swope swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to right and Becerra beats the throw to 3rd! Rob Worms grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and Becerra scores. 9 to 2, Jays! Won - 9 to 2 We had 11 hits and made no errors (not even by our defensive replacements!) Orlando had 6 hits and made 1 error Danny Coreano (W 2-7) went 9 innings (CG), allowed 2 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. 104 pitches. At bat, he reached on an error and scored a run. Victor Mandujano (L 3-4) went 7 innings, gave us 4 runs, 8 hits, 6 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2. He balked. At bat, he had a hit. CF Cal Doty had 3 hits with a double and a walk (INT), scored a run and had 2 RBI. LF Glen Lewis had 2 hits with a Grand Slam, his team leading 6th home run of the season, and scored 2 runs. 1B Ed Diskin hit a double and drew a walk. 1B Tony Becerra drew a walk and scored a run in his only trip to the plate. RF Rob Worms had 2 hits with a double and 2 walks (1 INT) and scored 2 runs. SS/2B Charlie Faber hit a double, drew 2 walks, scored a run and had an RBI. Down on the Farm: Daytona (A) lost at home to Norfolk, 16 to 5. Mike Gaddis (33-R) was the starting pitcher. He is the all-time leader in wins for the Jays, but I do not think he will get another one for Jacksonville. He is now 0-5 in 6 starts with an 8.90 ERA for the Tortugas. CF Tom Roemer (23-L) of Norfolk went 6 for 6, hitting for the Cycle, scored 4 runs and had 6 RBI. He was the #91 prospect this Spring. |

Jacksonville Jays (23-33 .411 11 GB tied for 6th place in the Southern Division) at Orlando Juice (28-27 .509 5.5 GB tied for 3rd place in the Southern Division) JAX: Dale Gilchrist (23-R) (2-4 4.02 ERA 53.2 IP, 52 H, 2 HR, 24 BB, 33 SO) Rookie vs. ORL: Clark Davis (24-R) (7-2 3.32 ERA 86.2 IP, 75 H, 4 HR, 28 BB, 58 SO) Gilchrist gave up 2 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks with 2 strikeouts in 6.2 innings last time out in a win. Davis is their #1 starter. He beat us in April, giving us 2 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks with 6 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Danny Stewart (31-L .071-14-0-0-.205-0 C+) 2: RF Mike Volkman (34-L .238-101-3-14-.690-1 D+) 3: LF Cal Doty (25-L .283-99-2-9-.744-10 B+) 4: 3B Brian Porter (34-S .283-113-3-15-.819-0 C+) 5: C Bert Swope (30-S .272-81-2-7-.748-1 B) 6: 1B Jack Washburn (20-L .310-29-2-6-.989-1 B) Rookie 7: SS Bart Daw (30-R .239-155-2-16-.629-6 A) 8: 2B Charlie Faber (31-R .196-56-0-1-.558-0 A) 9: P Dale Gilchrist (23-R .421-19-0-2-.895-0 B) Rookie ORLANDO 1: 3B Ernie Patterson (21-R .320-181-1-19-.764-14 A+) Gold Glove 2: CF Ricky Perez (22-L .265-68-1-5-.599-2 D+) 3: RF Gil Weaver (24-L .352-193-5-28-.956-4 C+) All-Star 4: LF Barry Magee (30-L .244-160-3-16-.687-3 A) 5: 1B Joe Jones (26-R .188-32-0-4-.545-0 A+) Rookie #35 prospect 6: 2B Roger Falbo (31-R .277-65-0-9-.652-0 A) 7: C Kevin Landman (33-R .240-50-1-5-.658-0 D+) 8: SS Danny Hutchinson (23-R .279-147-3-17-.761-3 A) 9: P Clark Davis (24-R .143-28-0-3-.351-0 C+) Game Start: 2:05 PM Ballpark: Forbes Field Weather: 81 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing left to right Attendance: 11,772 Top of the First: Danny Stewart strikes out... He is now officially useless... Mike Volkman flies out to deep center. Cal Doty pops out to short... Bottom of the First: Ernie Patterson beats out an infield hit... Ricky Perez grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Gil Weaver lines out to center, Danny Stewart making a good catch! Okay, I amend my statement: he is useless as a hitter. Barry Magee swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd! We go 9 up, 9 down... Bottom of the Sixth: They pinch-hit for P Clark Davis, their #1 starter, who has only thrown 75 pitches and would have a Perfect Game going, if not for an error and a HBP.... PH Herman Chance (32-R) takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and gets bunted to 2nd. Ricky Perez grounds a hit to right. The Bullpen gets up. Perez takes off for 2nd on a 1-2 pitch to All-Star Gil Weaver. Weaver takes strike three and C Bert Swope throws Perez out for a double play!! Top of the Eighth: On the Hill: Ray Hayes (27-R), their closer, after a perfect 7th. Bert Swope bloops a hit just over the shortstop and we are hitless no more! Pinch-runner: Frank Wendell (34-R). He steals 2nd! They walk Jack Washburn intentionally. I can here some of you saying that I took the bat out of Washburn's hands by pinch-running for Swope when Wendell stole 2nd. But if he would not have stolen the base, I am confident Washburn would have been told to bunt... So the bat was taken out of his hands the minute Swope reached base. At least, the way it turned out, we have 2 runners on and no outs, instead of 1 runner on and 1 out. PH Glen Lewis (21-L) is sent up and then we do something truly stupid.... We attempt a double steal... Even if successful, that would surely take the bat out of the hands of our best hitter, but is is NOT successful and Wendell is thrown out by defensively challenged C Kevin Landman... They do NOT walk Lewis! A wild pitch sends Washburn to 3rd! And NOW, with the count full, they decide to put Lewis on base... PH Tony Becerra (33-L) is sent up. Glen Lewis takes off for 2nd and C Kevin Landman throws the ball into center field and Washburn scores! 1 to 0, Jays! They pitch to Becerra and he swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a double to right and Lewis scores! 2 to 0, Jays! The next two make outs. Bottom of the Eighth: Garrett Bender is in to catch, Ed Diskin is in to play 2nd and Leander Gooding is in to play short. Glen Lewis stays in the game to play right. Kevin Landman grounds one to 1st and Jack Washburn boots it for his first Major League error.... The Bullpen gets up. Danny Hutchinson grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. With 2 outs, Ernie Patterson swings at the first pitch and bloops a hit to right.... Ricky Perez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up... Gil Weaver lines a hit to left and 2 runs score.... tie Game: 2 to 2. Two shutouts lost along with wins for their pitchers on unearned runs in the final innings in this series.... Call to the Bullpen: Bill Grant (31-L). Bill Magee, a lefty, grounds a hit up the middle and another run scores... 3 to 2, Juice. Top of the Ninth: New Pitcher: Daniel Escarcega (31-R), who got the win with a perfect inning on Friday, in Jim Baucom's blown shutout loss... Leander Gooding lines a hit to right. He steals 2nd and goes to 3rd on a ground out. Can we score a runner from 3rd with less than 2 outs? Yes! Brian Porter lines a hit to right and Gooding scores! Tie Game: 3 to 3! With 2 outs, Jack Washburn smashes one 463 ft. to right center!! 5 to 3, Jays! THAT is how you make up for an error! Bottom of the Ninth: Roger Falbo grounds out to the pitcher. Kevin Landman flies out to deep left. Danny Hutchinson beats out an infield hit.... If we end up losing this game now... Oh, my.... PH Tom Howard (25-R), normally their cleanup hitter and 0 for 7 with a walk and a run this series, strikes out looking and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays! Won - 5 to 3 We win the series, 2 to 1! We had 5 whole hits (all in the 8th and 9th) and made 1 error Orlando had 7 hits (all singles) and made 2 errors Dale Gilchrist went 7.2 innings, allowed 3 unearned runs, 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. LHP Bill Grant (W 1-2) went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits and struck out 2. Clark Davis went 6 scoreless innings, gave us no hits, no walks, 1 HBP and struck out 5. I am glad I am not the manager who pulled him from the game! RHP Danny Escarcega (L 3-3, BS 2) got 2 outs, gave us 3 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run and struck out 1. SS Leander Gooding had a hit, stole a base and scored a run in his only at bat. 3B Brian Porter had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Jack Washburn hit his 3rd home run of the season, was walked intentionally, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. PH Tony Becerra hit a double and had an RBI. |

While I do love Jim Baucom, his teammates do not seem to share my affections...

3B Marty Eades (31-R) had been cleared to play by Trudy the Trainer, so he was activated from the DL. To make room, CF Danny Stewart (31-L), 1 for 18 (.056) with 7 SO, has been sent to Daytona (A). I hope he is not finished as a ball player. We are finally back home for a little while and the Memphis Mules are here to play a short 2 game set. They lost 2 of 3 games at Louisville over the weekend. We split a pair of games with them in Memphis, April 15-16. They are 3rd in scoring with 4.45 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to #12 with 3.68!) They are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.071 per game (Jacksonville is up to #8 with 4.070). We have allowed 4 more runs than they have, but have played 1 more game. We are actually slightly better than the League average (4.08), believe it or not! Of course, we will be back to below average after this game... The Mules' run differential is +21 and ours is -22, up to 13th. Memphis Mules (29-27 .518 4.5 GB in 3rd place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (24-33 .421 10 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) MEM: Rick Potts (23-R) (8-1 2.27 ERA 83.1 IP, 72 H, 8 HR, 22 BB, 71 SO) vs. JAX: Dalton Hartman (25-R) (1-1 3.93 ERA 18.1 IP, 25 H, 3 HR, 1 BB, 10 SO) Potts is their #1 starter. He is tied for 2nd in wins and 4th in strikeouts. We keep catching everyone's #1, it seems. The last game we played with the Mules, we had to face Potts and he beat us, but we scored 5 runs on 10 hits, 1 home run and no walks with 8 strikeouts in 6 IP. Hartman gave up 3 runs on 8 hits, 2 home runs and no walks with 4 strikeouts in 6 innings last time out in a loss. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) MEMPHIS 1: CF Steve Gress (30-L .242-227-2-18-.636-5 B) All-Star 2: SS Bill Weydert (24-S .214-154-1-10-.529-5 B) 3: 3B Keith Meyer (27-L .353-218-8-33-.977-10 C+) MVP/Silver Slugger(2B)/All-Star 4: 2B Leo Toruno (28-L .317-208-8-36-.950-16 B) Silver Slugger(SS)/All-Star 5: 1B Nestor Gonzalez (28-L .320-197-11-46-.911-0 A) Silver Slugger/All-Star 6: RF Ron Alario (32-R .195-128-0-3-.497-0 A+) 7: LF Juan Nunez (35-R .284-88-0-4-.652-2 D+) All-Star 8: C Ed Vaughan (35-L .139-122-5-17-.579-0 C) 9: P Rick Potts (23-R .088-34-0-2-.235-0 B+) JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Frank Wendell (34-R .258-62-1-7-.636-2 C+) 2: 2B Leander Gooding (31-R .238-202-1-15-.586-11 B+) 3: LF Glen Lewis (21-L .299-187-6-26-.853-12 C+) Rookie 4: 3B Marty Eades (31-R .356-59-2-11-.963-0 C+) 5: C Bert Swope (30-S .274-84-2-7-.745-1 B) 6: 1B Jack Washburn (20-L .313-32-3-8-1.072-1 B) Rookie 7: RF Rob Worms (29-R .204-162-4-14-.628-13 A) Gold Glove 8: SS Bart Daw (30-R .237-156-2-16-.629-6 A) 9: P Dalton Hartman (25-R .250-4-0-1-.500-0 F) Game Start: 1:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 89 F, Clear Skies, with a 9 MPH wind blowing out to right Attendance: 6,827 Top of the First: Steve Gress flies out to left. Bill Weydert lines out to short. Keith Meyer grounds a hit up the middle. Leo Toruno swings at the first pitch and pops out to 3rd! Bottom of the First: Frank Wendell strikes out... Leander Gooding grounds out to short. Glen Lewis sends one to deep center, but Steve Gress runs it down... Bottom of the Second: Marty Eades, in his first at bat in 6 weeks, grounds a double down the left field line! But the next three do down with 2 strikeouts... Bottom of the Fourth: Glen Lewis pokes a hit to right center. Marty Eades gets plunked with an 0-2 pitch and drops in pain.... Trudy the Trainer goes out, but comes back alone and Eades stays in the game! With the runners on the move (which is stupid with someone who strikes out as much as Bert Swope), Swope swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses, but the runners are both safe! That is the first stolen base of Eades' career! With the infield in, Jack Washburn grounds out to 2nd and the runners hold.... Rob Worms, who also strikes out a lot, swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to left and both runners score!! 2 to 0, Jays! Bart Daw doubles to right center and Worms scores! 3 to 0, Jays! Bottom of the Fifth: Frank Wendell swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right center and gets bunted to 2nd by Leander Gooding. With 2 outs, Marty Eades doubles over the center fielder's head and Wendell scores! 4 to 0, Jays! Top of the Sixth: With 1 out, Steve Gress walks on 4 pitches, only the 2nd walk issued by P Dalton Hartman in 23.2 IP. Bill Weydert bloops a hit over the 3rd baseman... The Bullpen gets up. Keith Meyer grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and Gress goes to 3rd. Leo Toruno lines a hit to center and Gress scores. 4 to 1, Jays. Nestor Gonzalez hits a home run to right.... Tie Game: 4 to 4. I should have pulled P Hartman, but he had struck out Gonzalez earlier, so I let him go... Bottom of the Sixth: With 1 out, Rob Worms hits a home run to left! 5 to 4, Jays! That does it for P Rick Potts. New Pitcher: Jim Sutton (32-L), with a 2.93 ERA in 27.2 IP. with 2 outs, PH Ed Diskin (38-R) doubles to right. Frank Wendell grounds a hit to center and Diskin scores! 6 to 4, Jays! CF Steve Gress was hurt making the throw home. Top of the Eighth: On the Hill: Jim Kenzy (34-R), after a scoreless 7th. RF Ken Gates (27-L), batting .275 with 3 RBI and 9 BB in 40 AB, draws a walk... The Bullpen gets up. With 1 out, Keith Meyer grounds one up the middle, but Leander Gooding makes an amazing stop and throw him out at 1st and Gates moves up. Leo Toruno grounds one right to Gooding, but he throws this one away for a 2 base error and Gates scores... 6 to 5, Jays. Nestor Gonzalez is NOT walked... Why do we walk people so often, but NEVER when it makes sense? He grounds a hit to right and Toruno scores... Tie Game: 6 to 6. Ron Alario, the next batter, is hitting .191 with NO HR.... He grounds out to short... Bottom of the Eighth: On the Hill: John Robillard (26-R), their closer, after a perfect 7th with 2 strikeouts. With 1 out, Bart Daw walks on 4 pitches. PH Cal Doty (25-L) grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6. Frank Wendell is allowed to hit because he has 2 hits today and lines a hit to center! Leander Gooding pokes a little hit to left and Doty heads home.... The throw by Juan Nunez is to the backstop for an error! 7 to 6, Jays! Glen Lewis bloops a hit to left and both runners score!! 9 to 6, Jays! That does it for P Robillard. New Pitcher: Jim Zeiler (42-R), with a 4.02 ERA in 15.2 IP with 1 SO. But he had a 2.21 ERA in 57 IP last year with only 11 SO. Marty Eades takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Bert Swope lines a hit to left center and Lewis scores! 10 to 6, Jays! Jack Washburn grounds a double over the 1st base bag and Eades scores! 11 to 6, Jays. Tied our season high in runs! Won - 11 to 6 Believe it or not, we are up to 5th place! My head is swooning from the thin atmosphere up here! We had 16 hits and made 2 errors Memphis had 7 hits and made 1 error We just tied a record that I did not notice us setting before, because it is so modest: We have homered in 4 straight games! That is our team record, believe it or not, and this is only the 3rd time we have ever done it and all 3 were this season. Dalton Hartman went 6 innings allowed 4 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he hit a double. RHP Jim Kenzy (W 3-2, BS 2) went 2 innings, allowed 2 unearned runs, 2 hits and 1 walk. RHP Barry Finney went 1 scoreless inning, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2. Rick Potts went 5.1 innings, gave us 5 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, no walks, 1 HBP and struck out 5. I am always suspicious of those pitchers that do not walk batters, but plunk them... RHP John Robillard (L 1-2) went 1.2 innings, gave us 4 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. CF Frank Wendell had 3 hits, scores 2 runs and had an RBI. 2B Leander Gooding had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. LF Glen Lewis had 2 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. 3B Marty Becerra, in his first game in 6 weeks, hit 2 double, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch, stole his first career base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B Jack Washburn hit a double and had an RBI. RF Rob Worms had 2 hits with his 5th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI. SS Bart Daw hit a double, drew a walk and had an RBI. PH Ed Diskin hit a double and scored a run. For Memphis, 1B Nestor Gonzalez had 2 hits with his 12th home run, and 4 RBI. The Mules announced that CF Steve Gress had back stiffness that would probably bother him for 2 to 3 weeks. They will put him on the DL. Down on the Farm: CF Danny Stewart (31-L), in his debut with Daytona (A), went 2 for 5 with a home run. The Tortugas still lost (for the 10th time in a row), but it is encouraging to see that he can still pop the ball occasionally. I really hope he continues to hit well for them and can help us out later. |

P Jim Baucom bunts him to 3rd. They walk Cal Doty intentionally. Leander Gooding lines a 3-2 pitch to center for a hit and Daw scores! 1 to 0, Jays! Glen Lewis doubles to left center and Doty scores! 2 to 0, Jays! They walk Marty Eades intentionally to load the bases up with 1 out. Their third intentional walk today. Brian Porter lines a 3-1 pitch to center for a hit and Gooding scores, but Lewis is thrown out a home by Ron Alario... 3 to 0, Jays! Top of the Eighth: Bill Weydert grounds a hit to right and the Bullpen gets up. Ron Alario swings at 3-2 pitch and bloops a hit to right... But the next three all fly out!!! We have only had 5 CG shutouts in our history: Victor Espinoza, Blair Montgomery and Dale Gilchrist are the authors of the other three. We had 14 hits and made no errors Memphis had 8 hits and made no errors With 14 hits, we had to work hard to avoid scoring more than 4 runs and we did! The Hartford Whalers are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost a pair of games at home to Buffalo. We were 4-4 against them last season. They are 11th in scoring with 3.98 runs per game (Jacksonville is #12 with 3.81). They have scored 2 more runs than us, but have also played 2 fewer games. The Whalers are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.46 per game (Jacksonville is #8 with 4.03). Their run differential is -27 and ours is -13. Hartford Whalers (25-33 .431 11 GB in 8th (last) place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (27-33 .450 9 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division) HART: Freeman Cain (35-L) (6-6 2.60 ERA 90 IP, 81 H, 6 HR, 22 BB, 50 SO) vs. JAX: Dale Gilchrist (23-R) (2-4 3.52 ERA 61.1 IP, 57 H, 2 HR, 26 BB, 40 SO) Rookie Cain is their #1 starter. Glen Lewis swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to right center and Gooding goes to 3rd. Marty Eades flies out to deep center and Gooding tags up and trots home. 2 to 1, Whalers. Top of the Fifth: The Whalers go down in order on 3 pitches! Bottom of the Fifth: Bert Swope swings at the first pitch and grounds one to short, but Raul Parez boots it! Jack Washburn bunts Swope to 2nd. Having your #7 hitter bunt for the 8th and 9th hitter to drive in a run does not seem very bright.... Especially when he can hit home runs... With 2 outs, P Dale Gilchrist grounds an 0-2 pitch up the middle for a hit and Swope beats the throw home! Tie Game: 2 to 2! What do I know of baseball tactics? Bottom of the Eighth: PH Ed Diskin (38-R) grounds one to 3rd, but Eric Drake boots it! Cal Doty tries to bunt the runner up, but they get the force at 2nd, 1-6. Doty steals 2nd. They walk Leander Gooding intentionally, but then a passed ball moves the runners up! Glen Lewis lines a hit to left and both runners score!! 4 to 2, Jays! Bottom of the Third: With 2 outs, Cal Doty swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. He sends one to deep right, but Glen Lewis runs it down!! Bottom of the Fourth: Mary Eades leads off with yet another double to center! With 1 out, a wild pitch sends him to 3rd. And the next pitch is past the catcher, too, and Eades scores! Back to back wild pitches! 2 to 0, Jays! Top of the Sixth: With 1 out, Charlie Mackey doubles to left and then steals 3rd. Raul Parez strikes out! This time, we do NOT walk Leotha Kelley to face the pitcher (who might be hit for) and Kelley swings at the first pitch and pops out to 2nd!!
