Tied 8-8 after 8

Up 10-9 going to the bottom of the 11th with a tired Bobby Antonelli as one of my last arms.
He gets the 1st out before Ben Englert ties it with a solo HR. After the 2nd out Freddy Rosales drills a walk-off solo HR in a 3-3 day coming off the bench!

Frustration. Behrens gets into the bottom of the 9th before drilling the leadoff hitter and the bullpen, exhausted, can't keep the run from scoring in a 4-3 loss.

Providence gets a 7-5-0-0-2-7 outing from SP Juan Esquerra to down Lexington 4-1 and take a 3-2 series lead.

Mexico AND Philadelphia complete improbable 3-0 comebacks and BOTH win their series 4-3. Mexico stuns Baltimore with a 5 run bottom of the 8th to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 win!
Maybe more stunning was Kyle Jill throwing a CG 4-hit shutout to propel Providence to a 7-0 win and 4-2 series victory. Ending Lexington's run at a record 5th straight WS title.

Seung-Hyeon Kim (PHI) wins series MVP 10-29 2 HR 7 RBI
Manchu Nie (MEX) wins series MVP 8-25 4 HR 6 RBI
Chris Whitten (PRO) wins series MVP 6-20 3 HR 5 RBI
Tomohiro Masuda (LEX) was 0-2 4.97 in 12.2 IP 11 H 21 K

In Austin, Travis Harrison went 3-4 2 2B HR and 3 RBI and Chris Haske bailed out a tired bullpen which had made a 6-2 lead a 6-5 2 runners on nail biter.
Game 7 tomorrow.

Nick Archer grounds out to 1st with Brennan Jungles on 3B and Charlotte beats Austin 5-4 to win the series.
Bryan Peoples takes home series MVP honors going 12-32 3 HR 8 RBI
I didn't mention it before the series started, but Austin was 9-0 in the regular season vs Charlotte......
I don't even know what to say. Never saw this series going 7 much less losing. Speechless.

2014 MANAGERS OF THE YEAR
Mexico manager Erik Kravetz was named the PL's manager of the year after guiding the Black Bandits to their 1st ever World Series win. The former Austin Rustler CF was in his 1st year at the helm.

Speaking of Austin, the CL Manager of the year....

2014 awards and off season

To be blunt I'm stunned. I had zero concerns about getting through Charlotte and spent that series watching what Lexington was doing. When they were ousted I felt like the path to winning was there. Then you see not one, but two teams come back from down 3-0, then watch the team that beat me in 7 get swept the next round.

That was the last shot with this roster. I must cut payroll, a lot of payroll, before opening day. The amount to shave means I am going to be moving some big-time talent, at least 2 if not 3 players who were integral parts of this run.

A happy owner and a 106 million dollar budget which should see payroll around 95-100 million. That means I have to move 20+ million in contracts.

A few minor league coaches have left or had their contracts expire. The minor leagues, with the exception of Ft Wayne, were atrocious and all will be allowed to leave. We will look for some new talent and start shaping the entire system.

TOP PROSPECTS
Our scouts have done awesome. We've dealt quite a bit of our young pitching talent with our top P prospect ranked #58 overall in Kent Spargo whom we just signed as an international FA. Sung-hyun Lee is #77 and will be competing for a rotation spot in the spring.

Austin 's brown wins, and then loses

Austin's Andy Brown took home the 2014 CL Manager of the Year award and immediately afterward was handed his pink slip.
Brown helped lead the Rustlers to a 106-56 regular season and then proceeded to lead them to their 4th consecutive 1st round exit in the post-season.
Brown has spent his entire 25-year career in the Rustler organization. He managed AAA Warren through 2010 before being hired in 2011 to lead the big club.
“We felt it was time to move in a different direction. Andy is and always will be a class act and a good man, but sometimes being able to take that final step means doing something different.”

Austin tabs sanford

The Austin Rustlers announced the hiring of 58-year-old manager Rickey Sanford as their new manager. A 5-year deal that will pay Sanford 1.14 million per season. Having won the CL Manager of the year award from 2009 through 2013 Sanford was the only manager the Rebels ever had. His firing, after 5 straight world series appearances and a record 4 straight wins, stunned everyone.
“Rickey's 2152 wins and 4 rings speak for themselves. We feel that here in Austin Rickey is that final piece to the puzzle”

Arbitration

16 cases and 1 possible tender
I will not offer Jeff Reardon a contract and will lose the pick. I have to shave an enormous amount of salary and he's un-tradeable at his current number. Some very big cases to be heard which will have a serious impact on our winter meetings.

7 wins 8 losses and 1 “push”.
Certainly not enough wins to make a dent in overall payroll. So the work begins. I need to trim somewhere between 20-30 million and two players that will most likely lead the moves will be SP Rich Whittaker and OF Jeff Anderson.

  • Adam Rasmussen 3B (PHI) 2002 Jackie Robinson winner 3x All-star .265/.341/.487 over 13 years with 411 career HRs and 1180 RBI's. Looking for 10+ million a year

  • Terukatsu Yoshino 1B (BUF) 29-year-old has hit .260/.364/.474 with 101 HR and 271 RBI in 639 G and 399 GS. An extremely popular player with a reputation around the league of a guy who can 'dog it' with the best of them.

I don't envision being involved in any of these players given where we are payroll wise and where we feel our young talent is.

Austin deals whittaker

The Austin Rustlers have reportedly worked out a deal with the Providence Black Sox that will send 27-year-old SP Rich Whittaker and 3 prospects to Providence for 3B prospect Xavier Feliciano (the ABL's 10th ranked prospect) and the Black Sox 3rd round draft choice in 2015.
Austin has made it known they must pare down payroll and Whittaker's 4 years and 30.1 million remaining dollars were clearly part of the plan. Fans are upset as the popular P was coming off another good season (15-10 3.92) after a career-worst 2013 (9-11 4.70).

Austin also sent 1B prospects Kyle Yadon and Ryan Youngblood as well as Rustler OF Kyle Thompson to Providence.

BACKROOM CHATTER
The 1st of a few moves that have to be made. Payroll must get down to or below 100 million. Whittaker is in his prime so there's no sugar-coating this but Feliciano is a legit big league middle-of-the-order bat and very good defender. With Luis Orozco being another name we will entertain offers for we now have the #9 and #10 ranked prospects, both of whom are solely 3B to slide into that spot. It's likely we will look to move one of them at the winter meetings.

Rustlers-storm swamp confirmed

The Austin Rustlers have announced a trade with the LA Storm today. The Rustlers send OF Jeff Anderson and 2 prospects, as well as their 2015 5th round pick to LA for 24-year-old OF Steve Bradbury and the Storms 2nd round pick in 2015.

BACKROOM CHATTER
The 2nd of what is likely a few moves to pare down payroll. Anderson won his arbitration case at 7.5 and with a career .289/.371/.567 slash line, 110 2B 101 HR 294 RBI's and 62-86 SB he will do nothing but get better and make more. He's averaging 35-102 over the past 4 seasons here and at 27 another player entering his prime. Bradbury is a legitimate stud and he's also a RHH. No real speed to speak of but scouts rate his arm at '20'. Has legitimate 50 2B 45+ HR power. Right now the plan will be to platoon him with rookie star Tommy Dziedzic in left.

Free-agent signings

12/4:
  • Abdul-Muta'al Rhodes agrees to a 5-year 63.5 million dollar deal with the New England Minutemen.
12/11:
  • San Francisco sets the league on its ear announcing the signing of TWO huge free agents on the same day.
  • First lefty Tony Delgado leaves LA and signs a 6-year 44.3 million dollar deal and then former Rebel 'Co-Ace' Xie-li Au-Yong agrees to a 5 year 52.5 million dollar deal. An outlay of 96.8 million in one day and the Bears immediately become prohibitive favorites going into 2015.
  • New England announces the signing of the ABL all-time saves leader in Leo Montes to a 2 year 5.1 million dollar deal.
  • Brooklyn signs former Denver star Allen Gies to a 5 year 20.56 million dollar deal.
  • Matt Hughes cashed in on a 17-12 4.22 season by signing a 5 year 21 million dollar deal with Montreal. The 32-year-old is 39-26 3.25 in his career.

Behrens, rustlers announce extension

The Austin Rustlers have signed 2013 Koufax winner and 4x All-Star Matt Behrens to a 7 year 93.95 million dollar contract extension. The 25-year-old will make 12.85 million per season with an opt-out after 2019, 2021, and 2022 seasons. His base salary will go to 13.85 in 2020, and up to 14.85 in 2022.
Behrens career is on a legitimate HOF career path as he's gone 70-26 2.82 over his 1st 4 full seasons, winning the Koufax in 2013. He won a career-low 13 games last year but led the CL in WAR at 6.6 finishing 2nd in the Koufax voting after going 13-5 3.04 in 231 IP. Many thought he might win the award despite the low win total but apparently, Lexington's Walt Davis ERA being a full half-run lower swayed the end vote.

BACKROOM CHATTER
True aces are both hard to find and expensive. 4 years, 4 All-star games and taking the ball every single start. He's legit and I'd like to think of him as a Rustler for life. This clearly pushes the paring down of payroll front and center while also putting pressure on scouts and the GM to keep the rotation stocked and prospects piling up.

A look at the rustler organization heading into the 2014 winter meetings

CATCHER
ABL/40 MAN
  • Scott Comerford-29 (L) is a gold glove caliber defender, a leader and the mainstay for the next 3-4 years.
  • One of these two will be the backup next season. Becker is an elite defender while McGuire, an above avg defender is the better offensive option vs RHP and LHP.
  • Matt Becker-29 (R )
  • Nick McGuire-25 (R )

PROSPECTS
  • Jeremias Bidet-20 (L) Needs a ton of work behind the dish trouble with LHP but has legit power
  • Anotonio Jimenez-19 (R) Better defender, better arm than Bidet but still a long ways off.
  • Yoshi Okamura-25 (R) Will be at AAA as insurance

No plans to do anything meaningful at the meetings with our Catching.

1B
  • Nick Archer-28 (R) The 1B and leader for the next 5-8 years. Does everything but run, well.
  • Brennan Jungles-24 (R) Came up huge when Archer struggled with his knee late in the season. Hit .347/.380/418 in 52 games and was a force at the plate. Great defender but pretty much limited to 1B.

PROSPECTS
  • Ryan Avant-21 (L) legit prospect with solid bat. Not much power but potential to be a higher average guy with 40 2B bat. Still a ways off
  • Kevin Owens-21 (L) big time power guy who will take his share of K's. Good defender
  • Ryan Court-24 (R) Likely AAA at season's start, big power, best defender of the bunch.

The only potential move would be Jungles if someone shows enough interest to return a legitimate package. Archer's late-season knee issues mean Brennan could be a huge insurance package at AAA Warren. He deserves a shot at an everyday job if he wasn't in this organization.

2B
  • Sam Reyes-23 (R) He's the guy as long as he can stay healthy. He has not done that though. Elite GG caliber defender with superstar OBA ability. Can fly. He's the everyday guy but needs 1-2 middle IF backups to alter with him and Tighe at SS.

These three guys will make up at least 2 of the Utility jobs for our IF
  • Skyler Joshua-29 (R) 2B, 3B, SS all well above average. He's the only one of the three that can play 3B which gives him a huge leg up. Probably 3rd of the 3 as far as offense goes.
  • Brett Larkin-29 (R) 2B, SS a little better with the bat vs LHP but Joshua is a better defender at SS. Both can put the bat on the ball.
  • Brian McLaughlin-26 (L) The youngest of the three and only LHH. Elite 2B and SS glove and probably the best of the bunch offensively. Handles the bat vs LHP well enough that he could play everyday if an injury forced it.

PROSPECTS
  • Zhuo-cheng Shui-18 (L) huge power prospect signed out of Korea last year. 50+ HR potential with a .400 OBA eye at the plate. Swings and misses a ton though. Tons of work is needed defensively.
  • Bob Anderson-22 (R) 2B only, likely be the guy at AAA to start the year. Insurance
  • Onofredo Andriani-22 (R) super-utility guy can play every position. Could likely bunt his way to .300. Will start at Warren this year and hopefully mature as a hitter

No real plans to do anything or do I feel the need to. I will likely see if there is interest in Larkin given he's a 5.2 million dollar salary hit and headed to Arbitration again next winter. I can't see spending that much on a guy that will likely spend the year in AAA

SS
  • Joe Tighe-25 (S) He's almost a non-factor from the right side but he's the guy. Got some MVP votes and won his 1st silver slugger. Could move to 3B if need be and could win a GG at both SS and 2B.

PROSPECTS
  • Ben Gallo-18 (R) The games #22 ranked prospect. Scouts believe he has a legitimate 60 HR bat. He Will strike out 175+ times but will also win his share of GG. His SS only limitation is offset by the fact that if he does mature quicker than we think he will Tighe could move to accommodate. Ready to play SS in the ABL right now.

No plans to do anything here this winter. Will be trying to get Tighe to sign an extension but up to now, he has no interest.
I will let Gallo continue to mature at a comfortable pace, likely starting him at Ft Wayne again, and moving him when he's ready.

3B
  • Luis Orozco-27 (R) Had a career worst .238/.316/.377 season but again posted up every day. HR's have gone 27, 27, 19, 16, 15 from 2010. OPS .839, .818, .699, .693. He's at 7.15 million and that's not doable. I will actively look to trade him at the winter meetings. If the right deal doesn't come my way I'll keep him another year which will allow me to get another year of 'eyes on' both Garcia and Feliciano.

PROSPECTS
  • Jose Garcia-23 (R) Games #9 ranked prospect. ABL level defender already with a 3-hole bat. Great eye huge power.
  • Xavier Feliciano-20 (R) Games #10 prospect. Not as good a defender but will likely be a .310/390 AVG/OBA guy. His defense is more than adequate though. Where Garcia is 40 HR 25 2B potential Feliciano is 20 HR 50 2B guy. Both are going to be OBP machines.
  • Yoshinori Kamimura-16 (R) Has the makings of a HOF career. Potential 3 hole hitter .310/.380/.500

If the right deal does come down for Orozco I can move the middle infielders around OR if Garcia or Feliciano are mature enough to be ready by opening day that's an option too.
If the right deals fall into place I could explore a deal for either of the prospects. Garcia is 3 years older, but the better defender and has an enormous advantage power-wise. Feliciano looks like the more well-rounded bat as of now. I will have scouts on them in Winter Ball, getting reports on both all winter long. 2014 2nd rounder David Bone, a switch-hitter, is also one to keep an eye on.

OUTFIELD
Andy Adrian-23 (CF20) (L)
Dave Nolasco-26 (LF15) (RF9) (R)
Steve Bradbury-24 (LF12) (R)
Travis Harrison-23 (RF15) (LF10) (L)
Tommy Dziedzic-20 (LF8) (RF3) (L)
Jeff Hanna-23 (RF12) (S)
Jason Kuchar-27 (CF15) (R)

Some combination of this group will break camp. As it stands I need to go with 6 IF, which means 8 with catchers, and an 11 man staff is 19. I could go with 6 OF which I'd love to do. Platooning all three to some degree. The main issue is the defensive hit I take in RF with anyone but Harrison out there.

Adrian is the everyday CF, with Kuchar spelling against RHP but not every game.
Nolasco and Hanna will man RF with Nolasco getting a majority of the ABs.
In left, it will be Dziedzic with Bradbury but spring training could change my mind. The kid is ready according to scouts but we can wait and see.
We have 5-6 legitimate OF prospects at all three spots. None ready this year and most on the younger side of 20. This was the main reason I revamped almost every minor league HC position this winter.
