Oakland Athletics RF Omar Bravo was 2 for 4 with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs in a 10-6 win over the Pirates. The 24 year old is hitting .444 with 3 HRs and 12 RBIs in 5 playoff games this year. Bravo has won the AL Best Batter in 1976 for RF and is a 1975 All Star.

MLB Awards Night

The Gold Gloves were announced, Montreal Expos RF David de la Torre won the Gold Glove for RF.

Houston Astros RHP Mike Bower won the 1977 NL Reliever of the Year Award. The 26 year old was 7-5 with 28 saves, a 1.84 ERA in 50 games. Besides the Reliever Award, Bower is a 2-time All Star.

Oakland Athletics LHP Gene Clark won the 1977 AL Reliever of the Year Award. The 36 year old was 3-4 with 28 saves, a 1.17 ERA in 49 games. Clark is a 2-time Cy Young Award Winner,8-time All Star, 6-time Reliever of the Year and 2-time World Series Winner.

The Best Hitters at Each Position were Announced. The Montreal Expos did not have any winners.

Atlanta Braves CF Ryan Herring was named the 1977 NL Rookie of the Year. The 22 year old hit .290 with 9 HRs and 36 RBIs in 79 games. Montreal Expos LF Yue-jiu Zhou finsihed 3rd in the voting.

Oakland Athletics RF Yukiharu Takahashi was named the 1977 AL Rookie of the Year. The 24 year old hit .251 with 7 HRs and 35 RBIs in 74 games this year.

Chicago Cubs SP Justin Chrzanowski was named the 1977 NL Cy Young Award Winner. The 34 year old was 9-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 22 starts for the Cubs. This is Chrzanowski's 4th Cy Young Award. He has also been an 8-time All Star.

Oakland Athletics RHP Gene Clark was named the 1977 AL Cy Young Award Winner. The 36 year old was 3-4 with 28 saves, a 1.17 ERA in 49 games. Clark has now won the Cy Young for the 2nd time, he won previously in 1973. He is also a 8-time All Star, 6-time Reliever of the Year and 2-time World Series Champion.

New York Mets LF Doug Stowe was named the 1977 NL Most Valuable Player. The 27 year old hit .359 with 27 HRs and 71 RBIs in 98 games for the Mets. This is Stowes 1st MVP Award, he has also been a 2-time All Star and 3-time Best Hitter in LF.

Oakland Athletics 3B Ivan Ruiz was named the 1977 AL Most Valuable Player. The 29 year old hit .310 with 26 HRs and 90 RBIs in 98 games for Oakland. This is Ruiz's 4th MVP Award, he also won in 1971, 1972 and 1975. Ruiz is a 7-time All Star, 8-time Best Hitter at 3B, was the 1977 League Series MVP and won the World Series this year.

The Kansas City Royals have signed SP Pat Quinn to a 2 year, $34.0 M deal. The 32 year old was 9-4 with a 2.32 ERA in 21 starts with the Dodgers in 1977. For his career, Quinn is 75-32 with a 2.22 ERA in 147 MLB starts all with the Dodgers.

The Detroit Tigers have resigned SP Allen Baker to a 2 year, $24.0 M deal. The 37 year old was 5-6 with a 2.57 ERA in 22 starts for the Tigers last year. For his career, Baker is 58-67 with a 3.23 ERA in 190 MLB starts.

The New York Yankees have signed SP Tommy Larkman to a 6 year, $102.6 M deal. The 27 year old was 5-8 with a 3.34 ERA in 21 starts for the Mariners. For his career, Larkman is 55-24 with a 2.65 ERA in 135 MLB games including 113 starts.

The Montreal Expos have made a trade. The Expos have moved SP Dan Marlow to the CIncinnati Reds in exchange for 3B Jean Martin. The 27 year old Marlow was 2-2 with a 6.98 ERA in 4 starts for Montreal. The 23 year Martin old played just 4 games this year in MLB, hitting .167 with 0 HR and 0 RBIs.

Former Montreal Expos SP Javier Trevino signed a 6 year, $62.4 M deal with the Baltimore Orioles. The 31 year old was limited to 11 starts with the Expos and will likely miss most of the 1978 season due to a Torn UCL. Trevino was 8-3 with a 1.76 ERA in those 11 starts, for his career he is 41-33 with a 2.90 ERA in 108 MLB games including 88 starts.

Former Montreal Expos SP Aaron Cregg was in the news today. The St Louis Cardinals ace has had a set back in his injury recovery and is expected not to be ready for the 1978 season. The 34 year old was 4-7 with a 3.16 ERA in 17 starts for the Cards last year.

The Montreal Expos have signed LHP Charlie Rancourt to a 3 year, $4.5 M deal. The 32 year old was 5-2 with 1 save, a 3.30 ERA in 32 games for the Kansas City Royals. Originally with the Expos from 1969-1975, for his career Rancourt is 12-16 with 78 saves, a 2.45 ERA in 231 MLB games.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed former Montreal Expos SP Mario Romero to a 2 year, $23.6 M deal. The 33 year old was 8-6 with a 3.34 ERA in 22 starts for the Cubs. For his career, Romero is 75-66 with a 3.29 ERA in 192 starts. 84 of those start were with the Expos.

The MLB Draft

The Montreal Expos will draft 14th overall in the years draft and will draft 2nd in the Supplemental Round due to the loss of SP Javier Trevino.

Lets take a look at the Expos 1972 MLB Draft, 5 years ago.

The Expos selected in the 1st round, 10th overall SP Joey Caputo. The 24 year old is currently with the Expos and had 4 games with 3 starts last year. He will get a shot a the starting rotation this year of the Expos. He has 22 games of AAA experience including 17 starts. His record in AAA is 10-3 with a 2.49 ERA so he maybe ready for the move up.

The Expos selected in the 1st round, 21st overall pick C Kevin Roberts. The 25 year old is currently in the Baltimore Orioles organization after being traded by Montreal in May 1973. He was called up for 3 games with the Orioles last year and has 57 games of AAA experience hitting .253 with 7 HRs and 29 RBIs.

The Expos selected in the 2nd round, 49th overall 2B Alex Moore. The 26 year old is currently with the Houston Astros. Moore was traded the the Astros in July 1976. Moore played 66 games for the Astros in 1977 hitting .248 with 3 HRs and 17 RBIs. Moore has 174 games in AAA as well from 1973-77, he is hitting .295 with 7 HRs and 80 RBIs in AAA.

The Expos selected in the 3rd round, 66th overall LF Franklin Jaramillo. The 26 year old is currently in the White Sox organization. Jaramillo was released by the Expos in May 1973 and was quickly signed by Chicago. Over 2 seasons Jaramillo has played 42 MLB games hitting .236 with 0 HRs and 12 RBIs. He also played 50 AAA games in 1977 hitting .240 with 3 HRs and 26 RBIs in 50 games.

The Expos selected in the 4th round, 92nd overall RHP Sam King. The 24 year old is still in the Montreal Expos organization. Last year King made it to AAA where he played in 17 games including 6 starts. He was 2-5 with a 5.37 ERA in those games. He has spent most of his pro career in AA where in 1974-1976 he has a 6-9 record with a 4.70 ERA in 25 games including 23 starts.

The Expos selected in the 5th round, 115th overall pick, SS Howie Boudreaux. The 23 year old is currently in the Seattle Mariners organization after getting released in by Montreal in March 1975, the Minnesota Twins in April 1976 and finally signing with the Mariners in September 1976. With all the bouncing around, Boudreaux had played just 48 pro-ball games including 47 of those in AA in 1977.

1977 Montreal Expos 1st round, 14th overall pick is....
SP Zach Hall. The 17 year old is currently playing in high school. He was 9-0 with a 0.89 ERA in 13 starts in what is considered average competition. Hall has 4 pitches, with his fastball consistantly in the 94-96 mph range. Our scout feels that Hall can be a top-flight starter in the MLB.

Montreal Expos LF Mat Garnett was diagnosed with a strained hamstring and is expected to miss up to 6 weeks. The 28 year old hit .258 with 4 HRs and 21 RBIs in 61 games for the Expos last year.

Kansas City Royals SP Pat Quinn will be out 4 weeks with elbow strain. The 33 year old was 9-4 with a 2.32 ERA in 21 starts for the Dodgers last season.

The Boston Red Sox were dealt a big blow as SP Arturo Trevino is expected to miss the season with a stretched elbow ligament. The 33 year old was 7-4 with a 3.23 ERA in 20 starts last year for Boston.

The Oakland Athletics have extended 3B Ivan Ruiz to a 7 year, $191.8 M deal. The 30 year old hit .310 with 26 HRs and 90 RBIs in 98 games for the Athletics last year.

Montreal Expos LHP John Coulter was dealt another blow to his professional baseball career. The 30 year old was diagnosed with fractured elbow and is expected to miss 7 months. The list of recent injuries continue....On June 13th, 1975 he missed 3 months with a Ruptured tendon in his finger. On April 25th, 1976, he missed 10 months with shoulder inflammation. On April 19th, 1977 he missed 8 months with a torn labrum in his shoulder. He pitched just 5.2 innings in 1976 and 5.1 innings in 1977.

The Montreal Expos are projected to finish 4th in the NL East with a 45-55 record. The NL East projected winner is the Chicago Cubs with a 52-48 record. The Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to fight it out for the NL West. In the American League, the Toronto Blue Jays are projected to be the AL East winners with a close battle with the Boston Red Sox. In the AL West its projected the Oakland Athletics will win in a landslide.

The BNN have ranked the Expos Minor League system at 24 out of 24 teams. This is not a good sign with the Expos top current prospect ranked 122nd in RHP, 18 year old Zach Hall. The Expos top ranked MLB player is SP Eddie Hernanez who is coming off a disasterous 1977 season.

The Expos will start with 1 projected starter on the DL, LF Mat Garnett who is expected to be out for 1 more week.

The Montreal Expos (0-0) will open their season on the road with the New York Mets (0-0) The starting pitcher for the Expos will be RHP Eddie Hernanez who was 5-12 with a 3.76 ERA in 22 starts for Montreal in 1977. The Mets will go with RHP Hector Silva who was 3-4 with a 3.17 ERA in 16 starts with the Mets in 1977.

Expos SP Jim Lea was quite impressive as he blanked the Pirates 4-0 at Bell Park. He crafted a 3-hit shutout and chalked up 6 strikeouts with 1 walk in the contest. The 25 year old is now (1-0) for the Expos.

SS Fumiya Watari had a great start to his MLB career, his 1st at bat was a triple and he added a single for a 2 for 4 MLB debute.

Expos LF David de la Torre left the game in the 7th after injuring himself while running the bases.

Montreal Expos SP Eddie Hernanez had all his pitches working at Minute Maid Park. His stellar performance paved the way for an easy 8-2 win for Montreal. Montreal now 6-0, has gotten their season off to a good start. Hernanez is now 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA in 2 starts. Hernanez had a career best 3.01 ERA in the 1976 season when he was 11-6 in 20 starts for Montreal.

Chicago Cubs SP Justin Chrzanowski allowed 3 hits and struck out 12 over 8.1 innings in a 5-0 win over the Pirates. The 35 year old is now 1-1 with a 1.15 ERA in 2 starts. Chrzanowski had a career best 1.52 ERA in 1970 with the Padres when he went 12-4 in 21 starts.

Houston Astros SP Justin Bergman turned in a top notch performance against the Expos at Minute Maid Park. The result was a win for the Astros, 4-0. Losses have been few and far between for the Expos so far this season as their record drops to 6-1. The 34 year old Bergman is now 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 2 starts. Bergman was originally part of the Astros organization since the 1969 Allocation draft. He was the 16th overall MLB prospect in April 1969. He has spent his whole career with the Astros.

Bergman earned the win going 8.2 strong innings for Houston. The native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania allowed just 2 hits while striking out 8. Montreal hitters did nothing against the left-hander, as they were limited to 2 singles and 1 walk. Expos SP Jamari Taft falls to (1-1).

The Cincinnati Reds (1-6) are struggling and will pay a 3 game visit with the Montreal Expos (6-1). The Reds have RHP Ricky Avalos on the hill, the 23 year old is 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA in his only start. Montreal counters with RHP Eric Marks, the 29 year old veteran is 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA in his only start. Montreal's early success has put over 35,000 butts in the stands for this one.

The Cincinnati Reds relied on the hitting of CF Ismael Valle to stop the Montreal Expos. For the game, Valle went 4 for 5 with a HR, a double and 2 singles. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Cincinnati reliever Micah Couch picked up the win, upping his record to 1-1. Expos SP Eric Marks shouldered the loss while Reds Oscar Mercado saved it for Cincinnati.

Valle is now hitting .375 with 3 HRs and 8 RBIs in 8 games. The 23 year old was a 1977 NL All-Star and a 1977 NL Best hitter at CF. With the Reds leading 1-0 in the top of the 2nd, Valle hit a fastball from Eric Marks for a 2-run double. It was his 4th double of the season and put the Reds up 3-0.

Houston Astros 3B Gregorio Cortes was 4 for 6 with 4 RBIs in a 14-5 win over the Cubs. The 25 year old is now hitting .387 with 3 HRs and 10 RBIs in 8 games. Cortes was signed as a amateur free agent out of Nicaragua in 1969 by the Athletics. He was named the MLBs #1 prospect in April 1970. He was traded to the Astros by the Athletics in October 1971 in a deal that included current Expos CL Aiden Beasley.

San Diego Padres LF Jack Hepburn was 2 for 3 in extending his hitting streak to 20 games in a 9-1 win over the Dodgers. The 25 year old is now hitting ..370 with 0 HRs and 3 RBIs in 8 games. Hepburn was originally drafted by the Padres in the 2nd round of the 1971 MLB draft, 42nd overall. He was named the MLB's #100 prospect in April 1975.

The Reds picked up a win at Bell Park, knocking off the Expos 5-4. SP Danny Alessi played a key role in the win. Reds RP Marco Coronel picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Expos RP Jim Pearcey was saddled with the loss and he falls to 0-1. Losses have been far and few between for the Expos, as they fall to 6-3 on the season. Alessi is now 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in 2 starts. Alessi was drafted by the Royals in the 1st round, 17th pick of the 1969 MLB draft. He was named the MLB's #30 prospect in April 1970. He signed a 3 year free agent deal with the Reds in November 1977.

The Reds got a big at bat from 2B Gary Green. For the game Green went 2 for 5 with a triple, while adding 2 RBIs. In the top of the 10th with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run scoring single , his 8th hit of the year to give the Reds the 5-4 lead. Expos 1B Darren Maher hit 2 HRs and had 3 RBIs in a losing cause.

The Montreal Expos have activated LF Mat Garnett from the IR, the 28 year old was injured during spring training and will do a brief conditioning stint in AAA. Last year Garnett hit .258 with 4 HRs and 21 RBIs in 61 games.

The Montreal Expos are now ranked 8th in the MLB Power Rankings.

Oakland Athletics 3B Ivan Ruiz was named the AL Player of the Week. The 30 year old is now hitting .480 with 4 HRs and 12 RBIs in 6 games. Ruiz was originally part of the 1969 Allocation draft with the Athletics and has spent his whole career in Oakland.

The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Expos for the second straight game in extra innings for the 3 game sweep. Reds LF Dave Osuna was the player of the game with his superb performance. He went 2 for 5 with a HR, scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Reds RP Leo Ruff picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Expos RP Will Gibson was saddled with the loss and goes to 0-1. The Reds are off 4-6 record to start the season. The 28 year old Osuna is now hitting .324 with 2 HRs and 8 RBIs in 10 games. Osuna entered the MLB with the Reds as a free agent signing out of Mexico.

The Montreal Expos got a strong performance from SP Eddie Hernanez who stymied the Braves offense en route to a 10-2 win at Turner Field. Montreal now 7-4, has played well in the early going. Hernanez is now 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 3 starts. The 25 year old Hernanez was originally a Mexican league free agent signing by the Royals in October 1969. He was traded to the Expos on May 20th, 1972 in a deal that also brought LF Yue-jui Zhou to the Expos. On April 15th, 1975, Hernanez was named the MLB's #24 prospect.

Hernanez, a native of Xico, Mexico was dealing all game. He kept the Braves hitters off balance, while giving the Expos 8.1 quality innings. Hernanez threw 106 pitches, allowing 3 hits and striking out 5.

Getting an impressive start from Jamari Taft, Montreal beat Atlanta by the score of 6-0. Montreal is off to a hot start at 8-4. Taft dominated for Montreal earned the victory to move to 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA in 3 starts. He was in control all game, scattering 5 hits over 7 innings while striking out 9. Atlanta batters could never bunch up enough hits to produce a rally. For his career, Taft is 39-25 with 1 save, a 3.14 ERA in 124 MLB games including 88 starts.

Montreal Expos LF Yue-jui Zhou left the game in the 8th inning after injuring himself running the bases. The Expos announced after the game it was a Hamstring strain and that he will be placed on the DL as he maybe out for up to 5 weeks.
