Ireland - Heavyweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Tom Sharkey vs Colin Kenna - Sharkey used a huge right cross to dispatch Kenna at 2:48 in the 1st round. this was his 2nd straight KO in a round fight! Con O'Kelly vs Kevin McBride - This was a simply awe inspiring action bout between the darkhorse McBride and the huge favorite O'Kelly. The 5th round was back and forth action throughout, the stuff that legends are made from! (or at least round of the year... Bartley Madden vs Peter Maher - Madden and Maher were putting on a good entertaining bout, despite the rash of fouls throughout. In the 14th round however, with Madden up 6-4, 5-5, 6-5 the referee had seen enough when Madden buried a blatant low blow that sent Maher crashing to the canvas. Madden was rightfully disqualified handing Maher the win! Jim Coffey vs Martin Rogan - Action bout with lots of infighting back and forth gave us several great rounds, though neither man went down. It went to the score cards and the judges saw it 8-7, 7-8, 8-7 for the winner by split decision Coffey! |

Ireland - Heavyweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Quarter-Finals:
Tom Sharkey vs Peter Maher - Sharkey started out fast, taking the first 2 rounds only to have the suprising Maher storm back to take the next 3 with clever boxing. In the 6th however he walked into a nasty combination that went upstairs, downstairs, and back upstairs again. Maher gamely tried to rise but fell back to the canvas as the count reached 10! Con O'Kelley vs Jim Coffey - Coffey survived an early knockdown to take it to O'Kelley throughout to pull off the upset win by the score of 8-4, 6-5, 10-5. Final: Tom Sharkey vs Jim Coffey - Sharkey dominated throughout but really shined in the 5th and 6th before a cumulation of punches had Coffey out on his feet. The referee jumped in to end it at the 2:21 mark of round 6 for the TKO! Sharkey moves on to the World Tournament! |

Ireland - non Heavyweights
I'll be finishing Ireland in this thread.
Light Heavyweights: Final: George Gardiner vs Mike McTigue - Despite having his left orb nearly closed, McTigue dominated Gardiner throughout to earn the 10-5, 9-6, 11-4 decision. Both Lee McRae and myself had it 11-4 as there was no doubt who the victor was in this one. Super Middleweight: Steve Collins gets the berth and is expected to do well in the World Tourney. Middleweights: With 6 warriors in the field, the top 2 seeds will recieve a bye in the Quarter-Finals. They are Jack Dempsey NP and Jack Burke. Quarter-Finals: Mike Donovan vs John Seenan - Donovan came out with a crisp combination then a right hook that floored Seenan. Seenan arose at 7, but wasn't able to mount any sort of offense or defense forcing the referee to end things for the 1 TKO! Andy Lee vs Mick Leahy - Superior boxing skills and a flash knockdown propelled Lee to a 15 round unanimous decision by the score of 7-6, 10-5, 7-4. Semi-Finals: Jack Dempsey NP vs Andy Lee - A dominant performance by Dempsey as he used superior skills in every aspect of the game to force Lee's corner to throw in the towel near the end of the 3rd round before their man took serious damage. Call it a 3 TKO. Jack Burke vs Mike Donovan - Burke was simply the better fighter in this one, landing a right hook in the 14th then finishing strong to win the decision 11-4, 9-6, 8-6. Final: Jack Dempsey NP vs Jack Burke - Dempsey used every part of the ring against Burke, making Burke be the agressor, then causing pain every time he waded in with brilliant counter punches. He scored a knockdown in the 15th round then poured it on, with only the bell saving Burke in the end. The judges scored the fight 10-5, 9-6, 10-5 for Dempsey who will fight in the World Tournament. Jr. Middleweights: Sean Mannion represents Ireland in the World Tournament on an automatic berth. Welterweights: Billy Gardner vs Jimmy Gardner - The punch-stats tell it all in this one as Jimmy Gardner threw nearly 400 more punches while landing 130+ less than Billy Gardner. Add in a pair of knockdowns by Billy and it spelled disaster for Jimmy as the judges scored it 11-4, 8-7, 9-6 for Billy Gardner who heads on to the World Tournament. Jr. Welterweights: Mark Riggs is the only entrant thus will be in the world Tourney. Lightweights: There are 4 entrants in this weight class. Semi-Finals: Willie Fitzgerald vs Tommy Cleary - Fitzgerald was clearly winning the fight, and was close to finishing Cleary in the 13th with a knockdown when he hit Cleary with an elbow and was immediately disqualified! Jack McAuliffe vs Patsy Sweeney - McAuliffe was the better fighter according to all the pundits, but Sweeney outworked him, out punched him and outsmarted him for a 10-5, 10-5, 11-4 decision. Final: Patsy Sweeney vs Tommy Cleary - Cleary was up 2-0, 1-1,1-1 through the first 3 rounds when he landed a followup cross that literally tore the right eyebrow of Sweeney, forcing the end of the fight half way through round 4. With the TKO, the improbable Cleary moves to the world tournament! Featherweights: There are 7 featherweights in this competition for the Irish berth. Top seeded Bernard Dunne recieves a bye. Quarter-Finals: Dick Hollywood vs Paul Griffin - Hollywood broke over a suprisingly close fight by taking the final 3 rounds. Griffin was considered a warmup fight for bigger things in this tourney for the highly regarded Hollywood. The judges scored it 9-6, 9-6, 10-5 for Hollywood. Barry McGuigan vs Billy Kid Irwin - McGuigan simply over matched Irwin in every phaze of the game, scoring 7 knockdowns, including 3 in the 13th and final round. Irwin tried valiantly to get up yet again, but finally was unable to beat the count. McGuigan was 12-0, 10-2 (??) 12-0 through the first 12 rounds. Jimmy Dime vs Dave Sullivan - Dime had little trouble with Sullivan, scoring 2 knockdowns, the final one for the count in the 5th round to move on in the tourney. Semi-Finals: Bernard Dunne vs Jimmy Dime - Dime was the agressor, taking it to Dunne though he was less accurate. Dunne landed more shots but did it in bunches, losing more rounds when a right cross opened a huge gash on the forehead of Dime and the fight was stopped for the TKO win. Dime was up 5-4 on all 3 cards when he recieved the loss. Dick Hollywood vs Barry McGuigan - Great fight between to excellent fighters saw McGuigan down early but getting up to push ahead with a pair of his own knockdowns in the 12th round then taking 2 out of the last 3 rounds to win the 8-7, 7-8, 8-6 split decision. Final: Bernard Dunne vs Barry McGuigan - Dunne was the flashier fighter, and it paid off in this one as McGuigan threw the heavier leather in a fight that most pundits felt went for McGuigan. The judges disagreed however as they scored it 7-5, 8-6, 8-6 for Dunne! I had it 8-7, Ian Lord had it 8-6 for McGuigan. Dunne moves on to the World Tournament where he should be a factor. Bantamweights: Final: Johnny Caldwell vs Mike Nolan - After a blistering first round by both men, Caldwell took over, battering Nolan before scoring the KO at 2:58 in the 2nd round! Caldwell earns his way into the World Tourney in spectacular fashion! Flyweights: Frank Brierly is the entrant at Flyweight. |

Italy - Heavyweights - Round 1
Italy has a rich boxing tradition, providing many good fighters throughout the years. In the Heavyweight division we have 41 fighters. Round 1 will consist of 9 fight in bouts to set the field at 32.
Uber Bacilieri vs Bonino Allevi - Allevi dominated this fight even though there were several great rounds by both fighters. The interesting fact here was that Allevi was losing each of the 3 rounds he scored knockdowns in, or the fight would have been much closer than the 10-4, 11-3, 12-2 result he earned. Biagio Chianese vs Giancarlo Bacchini - It was obvious throughout that Chianese was the classier fighter in this bout, so it may have been a kindness that it was stopped when Bacchini suffered a bad cut on the bridge of his nose in the 8th round for the TKO on cuts. Guido Trane vs Gino Buonvino - What started out as a hugging and clinching round 1 ended when Buonvino landed a crushing right cross to end Trane's night at the 1:13 mark! Fausto Constantino vs Cesare Di Benedetto - Di Benedetto had little trouble with Constantino, dispatching him in the 4th with a hard jab followed by a devastating right cross for the 10 count. Giancinto Franzolin vs Gianfranco Giannini - Franzolin broke open a very close fight with a crushing uppercut in the 5th round for the KO. Saverio Grizzo vs Mario Liani - Grizzo wore his man down before scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 7th round. Liani survived that round, but it was obvious that he was still woozy when the 8th started, and Grizzo went straight at him, pouring it on until the referee ended the fight half way through the round for the TKO. Francesco Piccinali vs Salvatore Ruggirello - Ruggirello survived a 2nd round knockdown to score the KO in the 6th round. Domenico Scala vs Primo Ubaldo - Scala dominated throughout, punctuating it with a pair of knockdowns, one for a 9 count and the other that would have been 10 if it weren't for the bell in the 15th and final round. The judges scored it 11-3, 9-5, 11-3 as Scala advances. Guiseppe Sanga vs Angelo Visini - Dull was an understatement in this one as neither Sanga or Visini seemed willing to mix it up. It showed in the score cards as it went 7-6 Sanga, 7-7, 6-6 for the majority draw. Unfortunately we have a rematch next. Rematch: Guiseppe Sanga vs Angelo Visini - Visini took control in this one, aided by a cut on the inside of the left eyebrow of Sanga that continuously bled until in the 9th round the referee ended it for the TKO for Visini. |

Italy - Heavyweights - Round 2
Round 2:
Francesco Damiani vs Bonino Allevi - After a slow start, Damiani started to enforce his will in the 3rd, scoring several hard shots that nearly had Allevi out on his feet. Damiani sensed his man was still in trouble coming out in the 4th and charged hard, scoring a knockdown with a huge left-right combo! Allevi gamely got up but was immediately trapped on the ropes where Damiani started using him as a punching bag until the referee stopped it for the 4th round TKO! Primo Carnera vs Gino Buonvino - Carnera scored a knockdown in the 1st, then 2 in the 2nd, the final one for the 10 count as he swarmed Buonvino throughout. Luigi Musina vs Cesare Di Benedetto - Musina used a well rounded attack to pick Di Benedetto apart, averaging over 35 connects per round to only 10.4 for Di Benedetto. It was Musina's jab that ended it though as Musina used it to open a gash over the left eye of Di Benedetto, and then targeting it reopened it several times before the fight was ended in the 10th round. Alfio Righetti vs Giancinto Franzolin - Righetti was the faster, stronger and slicker boxer in this one, scoring 3 knockdowns, including 2 in the 15th round, with the final one seeing Franzolin out but being saved by the bell! It went to the judges who scored it 14-1, 13-2, 14-1 for Righetti. Piero Tomasoni vs Saverio Grizzo - Grizzo never had a chance against the more polished Tomasoni, who worked the jab-cross sequence to perfection throughout the night to keep Grizzo on his heels. It went to the judges who scored it 13-1, 13-1, 12-2 for Tomasoni. Santo Amonti vs Salvatore Ruggirello - This was a brutal 3 round affair that saw Ruggirello down in the 1st round, Amonti down in the 2nd round then Ruggirello down and out in the 3rd for the KO! The fans were on their feet throughout this action packed match! Giacomo Bozzano vs Guiseppe Sanga - Bozzano scored knockdowns in the 4th then again in the 6th for the KO as he whitewashed Sanga. Franco Cavicchi vs Domenico Scala - Scala went down in the 1st round, and was recalcitrant throughout the rest of the fight as Cavicchi stalked him unmercifully. He finally caught up with Scala in the 9th round, scoring the KO on a sizzling hook to the midsection! Arthur De Kuh vs Biagio Chianese - After a solid 1st round De Kuh landed several huge shots in the 2nd then pinned the hapless Chianese against the ropes in the corner of Chianese. With 7 seconds left in the round Chianese's corner inexplicitly threw in the towel! Chianese was livid with his corner afterwards, stating that he wasn't hurt as badly as they thought and he should have been allowed to continue the round. Erminio Spalla vs Claudio Cassanelli - Spalla won nearly every round in workman like fashion until the 9th round when he scored a pair of spectacular knockdowns enroute to the TKO by way of referee's decision! Paolo Vidoz vs Armando Zanini - After an uneventful 1st round where both men appeared tentative, Vidoz came out with a 1-2 combo that caused blood to literally spurt from a huge gash on the inside of the right eyelid of Zanini. The referee immediately took him to the doctor who ended it as the cut was in a spot that is nearly impossible for a cutman to close. Lorenzo Zanon vs Domenico Adinolfi - Zanon built up a solid lead despite a flash knockdown in the 7th round, but Adinolfi scored a pair of knockdowns in the fatal 11th. The final shot was the end of the line for Zanon as he couldn't beat the count! Dante Cane vs Piermario Baruzzi - Cane survived a 4th round knockdown to score 3 of his own, including the KO shot in the 14th! Cane was up 8-4, 5-7, 7-5 through 13 rounds. Giovanni De Luca vs Franco DePiccoli - DePiccoli built up a big lead against De Luca then survived a knockdown in the 14th and then again in the 15th to win the 10-5, 9-6, 9-6 decision. Charley Massera vs Francesco Pianeta - Each man scored a knockdown, but neither man inspired through most of the fight sending it to the judges who scored it 8-6, 7-7, 9-5 for Massera. Roberto Roberti vs Giuseppe Ros - Ros had a very slight lead when he opened a cut over Roberti's left eyebrow that ended the fight. Ros was up 6-6, 6-5, 6-5 throgh 13 rounds. |

Italy - Heavyweights - Round 3
Round 3:
Francesco Damiani vs Domenico Adinolfi - Damiani was in with a tough customer in Adinolfi. Adinolfi took it to Damiani through most of the fight, scoring a flash knockdown in the 8th round. Damiani countered effectively throughout. In the 10th round Damiani landed power shot after power shot until the referee finally stepped in to stop the fight for the 10th round TKO! Primo Carnera vs Franco DePiccoli - Carnera survived a 1st round knockdown to score 3 of his own, including 2 in the 8th round, the final one for the 10 count! Luigi Musina vs Dante Cane - Musina survived an 8th round knockdown and the constant pressure from Cane. Using guile and speed he was able to use effective counterpunching to steal rounds. The judges scored this very close fight 9-4, 7-7, 8-6 for Musina. Alfio Righetti vs Charley Massera - A clash of heads caused a bad cut on Massera's forehead in the 6th. Righetti had seemingly built up a lead when the fight was halted in the 8th and sent to the judges for a technical decision. The judges scored the fight 5-2, 3-4, 5-1 for the winner by Split Technical Decision, Righetti. Piero Tomasoni vs Guiseppe Ros - Tomasoni was the crisper more accurate puncher and showed better ring generalship than Ros in his 10-4, 6-8, 8-6. Santo Amonti vs Giacomo Bozzano - Amonti dropped Bozzano 2 times in the 5th, 2 times in the 9th, was dropped by Bozzano in the 11th, then dropped Bozzano one more time in the 13th. Somehow it went to the judges who scored it 6-8, 7-6, 9-5 for Amonti. Franco Cavicchi vs Arthur De Kuh - Dominant performance by Cavicchi who scored 2 knockdowns before cutting De Kuh badly above the right eyebrow in the 11th to end things for the TKO. Cavicchi was up 8-2, 9-1, 9-1 through 10. Erminio Spalla vs Paolo Vidoz - Spalla scored 2 knockdowns in the 7th and another in the 15th before sending things to the judges who scored it 9-6, 8-7, 10-5 as Vidoz worked hard to keep in the fight throughout. |

Italy - Heavyweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Francesco Damiani vs Santo Amonti - Amonti scored a knockdown in the 2nd round, but that didn't effect Damiani's resolve as he pounded Amonti until the 12th when he scored the KO. Primo Carnera vs Franco Cavicchi - Cavicchi was winning the fight and scored a knockdown in the 4th. Carnera came out in the 5th incensed and determined to take control and that he did landing several huge shots before the KO at 2:28 in the 5th! Luigi Musina vs Erminio Spalla - Spalla punished Musina for 12 rounds, scoring a pair of knockdowns and opening cuts on both eyebrows. It was the one on the left eyebrow that ended the fight for the 12th round TKO! Alfio Righetti vs Piero Tomasoni - Righetti scored the lone knockdown and outboxed Tomasoni at times but Tomasoni's accuracy with his counterpunching made the difference as he won a narrow 8-7, 8-7, 8-7 decision. |

Unfortunately Alfio dropped a heartbreaker that could have gone either way. I had it 8-7 for Righetti myself. Still there are a few good names left.

Italy - Heavyweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Francesco Damiani vs Erminio Spalla - Several close rounds, but Damiani was by far throwing the heavier leather throughout, scoring a pair of knockdowns, including one in the fatal 10th round when it was stopped by the referee for a TKO. Primo Carnera vs Piero Tomasoni - After 3 lackluster rounds, Carnera hurt Tomasoni in the 4th, nearly having him out on his feet when the bell rang. In the 5th he came out strong, scoring a late knockdown and again pouring it on. For some reason the referee let it go on to the 6th, and again Carnera continued to savage Tomasoni until the crowd started yelling for it to stop, and finally the referee stopped the carnage for the TKO. Final: Francesco Damiani vs Primo Carnera - The irresistible force dominated the immovable object in this one as Damiani scored 4 knockdowns en-route to a brutal hard fought 11-4, 9-6, 10-5 decision over the beloved Primo Carnera. Damiani will go to the World Tournament, and Carnera has already offered to help Damiani with training for the event! |

Italy - Cruiserweights - Quarter-Finals
Top seeded Vincenzo Cantatore will recieve the first round bye as we have 7 warriors.
Cruiserweights: Quarter-Finals: Massimiliano Duran vs Fabio Tuiach - Duran boxed effortlessly using a stiff jab to keep Tuiach at bay through most of the fight then judiciously throwing punches in bunches. He floored Tuiach in the 12th enroute to a 10-4, 10-3, 10-4 decision. Pietro Aurino vs Vincenzo Rossitto - Aurino used pressure tactics to keep Rossitto on his heels throughout this one. In the 13th he scored 2 knockdowns and ended up earning a 8-6, 10-4, 8-6 decision by winning the final 3 rounds. Giacobbe Fragomeni vs Angelo Rottoli - Fragomeni was the faster stronger boxer in this fight using the ring to his advantage to make Rottoli miss far more than he landed. Fragomeni scored the lone knockdown in the 7th round then threw away a round he was winning with his 2nd low blow costing him a point. It went to the judges who scored it 8-6, 7-7, 9-5 for Fragomeni. |

Italy - Cruiserweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Quarter-Finals:
Vincenzo Cantatore vs Pietro Aurino - Aurino scored 3 knockdowns to Cantatore's 1, including one in the 15th that saw Cantatore saved by the bell! It went to the judges who scored it 8-7, 9-6, 8-7 in what was a close fight yet still a controversial unanimous decision for Vincenzo Cantatore! Massimiliano Duran vs Giacobbe Fragomeni - Fragomeni outboxed Duran in a dull boxer vs boxer matchup that saw neither man down. Fragomeni did more than enough to win 10-5, 9-6, 10-5. Final: Vincenzo Cantatore vs Giacobbe Fragomeni - Cantatore suffered a cut high on his forehead from an accidental clash of heads in the 2nd round that reopened in the 7th round to send it to the judges. Fragomeni scored the fight's lone knockdown in the 3rd round. It was a controversial decision to stop the bout as Cantatore nearly had Fragomeni out on his feet. The judges scored it 3-3, 4-2 Fragomeni and 3-3 even for a majority draw. Rematch: Vincenzo Cantatore vs Giacobbe Fragomeni - Fragomeni survived a 3rd round knockdown then built up a solid lead by using the entire ring, moving in and out in adroit fashion and working side to side as needed to befuddle Cantatore. Cantatore mounted a furious assault in the last 3 rounds but it wasn't enough to do the job as the judges all scored it 9-6 for Giacobbe Fragomeni. He now moves on to the World Tournament. |

Guilio Rinaldi vs Artenio Calzavara - Excellent action bout marred by Rinaldi's dirty tactics. Rinaldi had a slight lead when his 2nd low blow (6th foul total) caused him to be disqualified in the 13th round. Calzavara moves to the Semi's. Italy - Middleweights - Round 1
There are 14 fighters in the Middleweight class. Top seeds Nino Benvenuti and Sumbu Kalambay will recieve a bye in the 1st round.
1st Round: Tiberio Mitri vs Paolo Cottino - Dominating performance by Mitri as he danced well using the ring and his speed as a weapon against the hapless Cottino. Mitri caught Cottino coming in in the 12th for the KO win! Hugo Kelly vs Giampaolo Melis - Kelly was dominating despite losing a point for a low blow in the 5th round, winning 11-3 on all 3 cards. Vito Antuofermo vs Fabio Bettini - Bettini cut Antuofermo early and took control of the fight despite Antuofermo's agression. He moved around the ring like a ballet dancer popping the jab and reopening the cut on Antuofermo's forehead several times until the fight was stopped in the 10th round for the upset TKO by Bettini! Oddone Piazza vs Agostino Cardamone - An astounding bout that saw Cardamone down 2 times early then BOTH men down in an action packed 13th round that came down to the final 2 rounds which Piazza swept to win a 9-6 decision on all 3 cards. Bruno Santini vs Franco Festucci - Santini used a bobbing and weaving style to cut off the ring and score the KO in the 1st round against Festucci! Leone Jacovacci vs Italo Sortichini - Not a lot to choose from as neither man set the world on fire in this boxer vs boxer snoozefest. Fortunately the judges chose a winner so there'll be no rematch. They scored it 9-6, 11-4, 9-5 for Jacovacci. |

Nino Benvenuti vs Fabio Bettini - Benvenuti put on a boxing clinic using amazing hand speed and an impressive jab to score 2 knockdowns, the final one in the 8th round for the KO win! Sumbu Kalambay vs Leone Jacovacci - Kalambay danced his way to victory, scoring a knockdown along the way to a 10-4, 9-5, 10-4 decision. Tiberio Mitri vs Oddone Piazza - Mitri lands more than 52% of his punches as he uses lightining fast combinations and a stiff jab to keep Piazza on his heels throughout. The judges scored the fight 9-4, 11-3, 10-4 for Mitri despite Mitri losing a point for backhanding. Hugo Kelly vs Bruno Santini - Santini scored 3 knockdowns, none more important than the one in the 15th. Kelly needed to win the 15th in order to make the fight a draw, and was well on his way to doing just that when he walked into a Santini combination that floored him to give the round and the win to Santini 8-6, 8-6, 8-6. |

Italy - Middleweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Nino Benvenuti vs Bruno Santini - Benvenuti survived a 3rd round knockdown to come roaring back with a knockdown of his own in the 4th. He then continued on in machine like fashion with a piston like jab and clockwork accuracy with his punches when he scored the KO on a flurry of punches in the 9th round! Sumbu Kalambay vs Tiberio Mitri - Kalambay scored an early knockdown but that didn't stop Mitri from making it an interesting bout as he out-landed and was more accurate than Kalambay. Kalambay landed the heavier punches in the eyes of the judges as they scored the bout 9-5, 9-5, 6-8 and a split decision win for Kalambay. Final: Nino Benvenuti vs Sumbu Kalambay - Either one of these fighters has the potential to medal at the World Tournament, so this is a win-win situation for Italy. The fight started out with several close rounds that could have gone to either fighter but the middle rounds were Benvenuti. They then split the final 4 rounds to send it to the judges who scored it 8-5 Benvenuti, 8-6 Kalambay, and 7-6 for the winner and World Tournament entrant Nino Benvenuti! |
