Cubs, Astros Agree to Swap

The Chicago Cubs acquired a player Thursday to fill the void created by the retirement of Ernie Banks.

Chicago received colorful first baseman Joe Pepitone from the Houston Astros for minor league pitcher Larry Gura.

Pepitone hit .283 with 22 home runs and 87 RBIs last season with the Astros. The 30-year-old was considered expendable by Houston with youngsters Bob Watson and John Mayberry sharing first.

Gura, 23, pitched at Triple-A Princeton in the Cub organization last summer.

JIM Waiver Wire

The following players are available to claim. It should be noted that all these players are rated one star. You may wish to check their stats from the 1970 season on previous postings.

Email the commissioner if you wish to claim one. Indicate if you want him on the major league or minor league roster.

Note: The higher the ratings, the better the player.

Padres Claim Cloninger Off Waiver Wire

The San Diego Padres have claimed pitcher Tony Cloninger off waivers.

The 30-year-old relief pitcher appeared in 14 games for the Cincinnati Reds during the 1970 season. The right-hander had no record and a 5.19 ERA.

Walks were Cloninger's biggest issue. He issued 18 base on balls in just 17.1 innings. Cloninger struck out five.

Brewers Ink Three Players From Waiver Wire

The Milwaukee Brewers signed three players off the waiver wire early Saturday morning.

With spring training camps about to open, the Brewers inked pitchers Jim "Mudcat" Grant and Marcelino Lopez along with short stop Bobby Floyd to minor league deals.

Grant, 35, missed all of last season with an arm injury. He was released in spring training last year by Minnesota.

Lopez and Floyd both saw action with the Baltimore Orioles. Lopez, 27, was 2-0 with a 2.72 ERA in 33 games. Floyd, also 27, appeared in just four games with the Orioles. He did, however, hit .304 at Triple-A Odell.

JIM Amateur Draft List

Joy in Mudville League officials have released the amateur draft list. The draft is June 15, 1971.

Teams will draft according to last season's records. Thus, the Cleveland Indians hold the No. 1 overall selection. San Diego will pick second.

Rounding out the top 10 are Montreal, Milwaukee, Detroit, Kansas City, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis, Minnesota and California.

The Tigers and Royals each won 73 games. Meanwhile, the Cubs and Cardinals both won 75. Thus, a special tie-breaker will be enacted on draft day to determine which team chooses in the higher position.

This year's draft has been expanded to five rounds. Draft picks may be traded.

General Managers have until June 1 of the league schedule to submit draft lists. Otherwise, the computer will make the selections for your team(s).

American League East Preview

The following is the first in a four-part series previewing the 1971 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.

Baltimore Orioles
The defending JIM champions traded away their playoff ace Mike Cuellar. Last season year's Cy Young Award winner Dave McNally was hit hard in spring training. Yet, the Orioles return a solid mix of veteran talent such as AL Most Valuable Player Boog Powell and promising youngsters such as Bobby Grich.

Boston Red Sox
The BoSox feature a potent offense with the likes of Rico Petrocelli, Carl Yastrzemski and Reggie Smith. For Boston to take the flag, pitchers Tom Bradley and Jim Lonborg must step up to the ranks of Ray Culp and Gary Peters. If that's not the case, then twenty-three-old Massachusetts native John Curtis may quickly find his way from Double-A to Fenway Park.

Cleveland Indians
The Erie Warriors hold the rights to the No. 1 overall pick in the June amateur draft by virtue of a 112-loss season in 1970. Yet, the Sons of Geronimo have hope for '71. Sure, they rushed No. 2 overall pick James Rodney Richard to the bigs last season. But, the hard-throwing right-hander is still expected to become a top-flight pitcher of the future. Ivy Leaguer Pete Broberg is another arm expected to contribute down the road. That should make the Friends of the Feather feel somewhat better.

Detroit Tigers
The JIM League's hardest hit team by injury last year starts this season healthy. Portly southpaw Mickey Lolich anchors the pitching corps. Minor league slugger Dave Kingman may soon join Al Kaline, Norm Cash and Willie Horton in the Motor City Kitties lineup.

New York Yankees
Perhaps the JIM's most overlooked team a year ago. The Bronx Bombers won 94 games and slipped into second place late in the season. New York returns hitting stars Roy White and Bobby Murcer along with up-and-coming catcher Thurman Munson. Starting pitching remains a huge question mark.

Washington Senators
Welcome to the team that has changed faster than Congress following an election during troubled times. GM Dan S. (aka Dealer Dan) has been stockpiling young talent to build for the future. Newcomers Don Baylor and Chris Chambliss join farmhands Toby Harrah and Doyle Alexander in that promise for the future.

American League West Preview

The following is the second in a four-part series previewing the 1971 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.

California Angels
It's not the Angels in the Outfield this franchise is concerned with--it's the entire roster. Left fielder and team MVP Alex Johnson returns from a 224-hit, .339 season. Expectations are high for short stop Jim Fergosi. Twenty-game winner Andy Messersmith and 16-game winner Rudy May are the No. 1 and 2 starters respectively.

Chicago White Sox
The most sought after franchise when the JIM League formed, the White Sox surprised the baseball world by winning 87 games and finishing a distant second to Oakland. Former bullpen ace Wilbur Wood has moved into the starting rotation where he'll join Joe Horlen and Tommy John. Carlos May and Bill Melton spearhead the offense.

Kansas City Royals
Right-hander Roger Nelson and left-hander Paul Splitorff won 18 and 17 games respectively for this fifth-place finisher a year ago. Unfortunately, no other starter won more than seven. The Gold Glove trio of outfielders Lou Piniella, Amos Otis and Pat Kelly returns.

Milwaukee Brewers
Tim L. has taken over Milwaukee's finest. When your club features a team MVP who hit .283 and you've got pitchers with names like Gus and Brabender, Brewer fans may have to be patient.

Minnesota Twins
The good folks of the Twin Cities are still scratching their heads over the disappointing fourth-place finish last summer. Minnesota boasts a starting rotation of Bert Blyleven, Jim Kaat, Dave Boswell and Jim Perry. Hitters the likes of batting champ Tony Oliva, Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew key the offense.

Oakland A's
When does a 105-win season leave you feeling empty? When you fall one win short of the World Series, that's when. Oakland stands a pretty good chance of a return shot this season. Slugger Reggie Jackson appears on the verge of becoming a superstar who one day may have a candy bar named after him. The pitching staff of Vida Blue, Al Downing, Chuck Dobson and Jim "Catfish" Hunter may be the game's best.

National League East Preview

The following is the third in a four-part series previewing the 1971 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.

Chicago Cubs
A season after Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, looked more like Mr. Flub and retired, the North Siders have a new first baseman. He's Joe Pepitone, the flashy dressing, hair-drying toting left-hander who slugged 22 home runs for Houston last year. Chicago's hopes may rely on the arms of right-hander Fergie Jenkins and lefty Ken Holtzman.

Montreal Expos
The North of the Border Disorder will likely continue in '71. Pitcher Bill Stoneman lost 27 games for Montreal last year. Ron Fairly and Rusty Staub are the stars on offense.

New York Mets
In one of the most surprising deals of the off-season, the Mets dealt away fan favorite Tom Seaver for ALCS and World Series Most Valuable Player Mike Cuellar. The ex-Oriole joins fellow left-handers Jerry Koosman and Ray Sadecki in the New York rotation. Switch-hitting outfielder Ken Singleton sparks the offense.

Philadelphia Phillies
An end-of-the-year surge sent the Phils into second place by season's end in 1970. Starter Dick Selma (21-6, 2.81 ERA) may have been the year's biggest individual surprise. Young hitters Willie Montanez, Johnny Briggs, Greg Luzinski and Tony Taylor hold the key to the future.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Following an NL pennant and a six-game World Series loss, the Pirates rocked the JIM world by trading away franchise player Roberto Clemente. In return, Pittsburgh got three players it hopes will lead to future success. With Clemente gone, more is expected of Willie Stargell, Al Oliver and Richie Hebner. A strong pitching staff returns, anchored by Cy Young candidate Dock Ellis.

St. Louis Cardinals
Ffith-place finishers a season ago, St. Louis considers itself a contender this year. The Cardinals have good reason to believe. Bob Gibson and 26-year-old Steve Carlton are the mainstays of the pitching staff. Speedster Lou Brock sets the table for the likes of Dick Allen, Joe Torre and Jose Cruz.

National League West Preview

The following is the fourth in a four-part series previewing the 1971 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.

Atlanta Braves
Playing in a park known as the Launching Pad, the Braves have assembled a pretty good starting rotation of Phil Niekro, Jim Palmer, George Stone and Ron Reed. Milt Pappas will also contribute with spot starts. Offensively, MVP candidates Hank Aaron and Rico Carty will pave the way for youngsters such as Johnny "Dusty" Baker and Ralph "The Road Runner" Garr.

Cincinnati Reds
Rose is a Red, but not Vida Blue, if this team ever gets pitching, the rest of the league could be through. Cincinnati is long on offense featuring Pete Rose, Bobby Tolan, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez and company. The acquisition of ERA leader Pat Dobson has strengthened the Reds staff that already possessed hard-throwing Don Gullett and 25-game winner Gary Nolan. A beefed-up bullpen might put this team over the top.

Houston Astros
A contender for most of the 1970 season, Houston faded down the stretch. Astro fans are hopeful the NL's top-rated farm system will produce an abundant crop as the '70s upfold. Joe Morgan may be on the cusp of becoming an All-Star, but must cut down on his base-running errors (35 caught stealings last year).

Los Angeles Dodgers
Up two games to none in the NLCS last fall, Los Angeles somehow blew three straight games in which they held leads late into the game. Pitching remains a Dodger strength. Cy Young Award winner Bill Singer returns along with Don Sutton and Claude Osteen. The trio combined for 70 wins last year. After he killed them in the playoffs, LA added veteran Roberto Clemente via trade. The 36-year-old will join fellow All-Star Willie Davis in the Dodger outfielder.

San Diego Padres
Try as Dealer Dan might, this team is most likely several years away from some serious winning. First baseman Nate Colbert may be great, but a pitching staff that had just one member a year ago in double-digit wins isn't. Right-hander Marty Pattin was acquired in an off-season deal, but many question his impact.

San Francisco Giants
The Giants won 80 games and finished fifth in the JIM League's most competitive division last year. San Francisco boasts starters Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. On offense, the Giants' lineup features Willie McCovey and Bobby Bonds. Thirty-nine-year-old Willie Mays appears to be fading fast.

Reds Land Starting Pitcher, Power-Hitting Outfielder

The balance of power may have shifted to Cincinnati in the National League West.

The Reds landed starting pitcher Joe Coleman and power-hitting left fielder Frank Howard from Washington. In return, the Senators acquired young prospects Hal McRae and Frank Duffy.

Coleman, 24, will take one of the spots in the Cincinnati rotation. The right-hander was 18-12 with a 3.18 ERA in 42 starts for Washington last season. He struck out 214 batters in 294 innings.

Howard, 34, will add to an already star-studded Reds' lineup. The 6-foot-7, 255-pounder hit .276 with 35 home runs and 97 RBI for the Senators.

"We are excited about having the tallest player in the major leagues on our team," said Cincinnati GM Tim L. "We plan on having a large people night. Everyone over 6'5" will get in free. We will have a midget tossing contest between innings."

McRae will take over left field for Washington. The 25-year-old hit .242 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 158 at-bats last year.

Duffy, 24, will likely start the season in the minors. He played for the Newtown Kilowatts, Cincinnati's Double-A affiliate, last summer.

Washington Claims Two More Off Waiver Wire

On the eve of the 1971 season opener, the Washington Senators claimed two players off the waiver wire.

Washington signed left fielder Curt Motton and relief pitcher Dave Leonhard to minor league contracts.

Both players were released by Baltimore during the off-season. Motton hit .194 with one home run and three RBIs in 31 at-bats with the Orioles. Leonhard has yet to play in the majors.

Orioles Send Buford to Cubs for First-Round Pick

Just two days before their 1971 season opener, the Baltimore Orioles have traded leadoff hitter Don Buford to Chicago for the Cubs' first-round draft pick.

Buford, 34, hit .275 with 17 home runs and 65 RBIs for Baltimore last year. In addition, he walked 99 times and stole a team-leading 14 bases.

With Buford gone, Baltimore will likely open the season with highly touted Bobby Grich at short and Davey Johnson at second. Chris Speier, last year's top draft choice, will back up both positions.

The acquired draft pick will either be the seventh or eighth overall selection. The Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals both had identical records, thus, a yet-to-be-determined tie breaker will decide which team gets the higher pick.

May Day: California Pitcher Hurls First Perfect Game in JIM History

Anaheim, Calif.--May Day! May Day!

California Angels' left-hander Rudy May pitched the first perfect game in Joy in Mudville League history.

The 26-year-old pitcher handcuffed the Cleveland Indians on 98 pitches. May struck out struck out six as California mauled Cleveland 8-0. May allowed just two three-ball counts--both to Ray Fosse--in the game.

May, 3-2, retired Bob Miller on a ground ball for the final out.
