Anaheim was clearly tired, but I haven't seen the Jackets play like that...ever. Their power play was calm and collected, their penalty kill was strong, the Ducks got so fed up that they just started picking fights near the end of the 2nd period.
We'll see if it was just opening night adrenaline or if Hitchcock has something brewing here. Oh and the new arena atmosphere is amazing. They've finally went full-out with the Civil War identity. Highlight being a cannon fired everyime they score. |

I finally figured out how to describe what I think of these new jerseys.
When I was in 8th grade, there was a movement from old style shoulder pads-the smallish ones from the 80's to the bulkier 90s era equipment. Our varsity team got new jerseys that year, and they were much roomier. Our JV team then got the hand me down jerseys that dated from 1985-polyester, tight, and uncomfortable. These new NHL jerseys just kind of look like they busted out some old jerseys from the 70s/80s that have been shrunk over repeated washings. Plus, they have that stupid apron scoop. I can barely stand to watch these games. |

The Pens didn't show up the first two periods, before finally displaying some effort in the third. The Canes were beating them to every lose puck and battling hard along the boards. The Pens defense looked a bit lost, and a lot of Therrien's line combinations (especially while mixing them up in the 3rd) were head scratchers. |

Caps blank the Canes 2-0 in their home opener to go 2-0-0 on the season
Last year I attended 2 games This year my goal is 6 Maybe if my interest increases I can justify season tickets Anyways I am going to do my damndest to follow the Caps this season Alex lost a tooth in last nights game, the first of his carrer This makes me wonder, why did mouth guards never catch on in the NHL? They have in American football and youth soccer and youth baseball I would rather be called a wimp than lose 40% of my teeth by age 25 |

The Pens won today, 5-4, with a better showing than yesterday. The Ducks looked fatigued by the end of the game (and who can blame them?), but it was still a good win. Crosby took a shot to the foot and was hobbled the last half of the game, so hopefully it's nothing serious.
Therrien actually managed to stumble upon a good line combo in all his tinkering during the game: Malkin-Staal-Sykora. Fleury and the defense still didn't look very solid. |

I know an old ref who religiously wore a mouthpeice and a visor, and he caught a clearing shot right in the mush and lost a tooth. Also, I played for 15 years and can't think of one person on my team who lost a tooth while playing in a game. of course, amatures under 18 have to wear full face protection in the US. Jason Blake has been diagnosed with Leukemia, and although the doctor's say this is treatable he still a very young man in the prime of his life.

That sucks. Since he is a former Moorhead Spud and SCSU Huskie, I am bound by the forces of nature to root against him on the hockey rink. However, in this I hope he beats it.

Stillman making his season debut for the Canes tonight. Looking good so far, and as the only game on the slate, maybe we can get some 'spect tonight.

Was there a reason why the Leafs left Toskala in to be shelled?
For the record, I've never been totally sold on Toskala as a top-level goalie. Of the Finnish goalies who currently have an NHL roster spot, Kipper, Niittymäki, and Norrena all backstopped my local team to a national championship at least once. Kipper practically won it all by himself in 1999, and the other two were also excellent and have had success in international rinks. Of the others, Lehtonen was fantastic in his last Finnish season, and while he's had it rough at times I still have no doubt that he'll be one of the best in five years' time. Before leaving Bäckström had a couple of seasons when his play ranged from very good to awesome; the only reason I'm not totally convinced is the fact that on international ice, he's so far been something of a flop. That's usually not a good sign, but he seems to be doing fine. Toivonen was so young when he left for North America that I never got a good look at him, but I liked the little I saw. All of these guys either made me think "Geez, I wish we had someone like him", or would have done so if we hadn't had Nitty, Kipper, or Norrena at the time. That leaves Toskala. While he was clearly an upper-echelon goalie in our domestic league, I never felt envious towards his team for having him. Yes, he was young at the time, but what I remember thinking about him is that he's pretty good for such a young guy, while the likes of Lehtonen or Toivonen were at that age just good, period. I hear he had a great season in Sweden just before leaving for the US, but his performance with the national team that spring was mediocre. In fact, while he's never been disastrously bad in Team Finland jersey, he's never shown anything special there either. Sharks fans seemed to like him and called him the best 2nd-stringer in the NHL, but maybe, just maybe that's all he's ever going to be. Just because he's had good half-seasons doesn't mean he can take on a starting job. Frankly, I think he's the Manny Legace of Finland. Good goalie, too good to play just 15-20 games a season, but doesn't quite have what it takes to start 60-65 times. I have to wonder how much of this is size-related; of the current NHL starters, most are between 6'1" and 6'3", and only a handful are listed as below 6 feet tall. Of these, Hasek and Turco are 5'11", and the remaining ones are Legace and Toskala; Legace is 5'9", and Toskala is listed as 5'10", which means he's one of those guys who, in his mid-20s, magically grew an inch on the transatlantic flight.
