Wilyer Abreu

The Boston Red Sox acquired two prospects, Enmanuel Valdez and Wilyer Abreu, from the Houston Astros for catcher Christian Vázquez.

Abreu’s Baseball America scouting reports notes: “After trading contact for power coming out of the 2020 pandemic, Abreu has found a happy medium this season, showing better bat-to-ball skills allowing him to more consistently access his power in game. He’s an extremely patient hitter with a discerning eye at the plate, leading to high walk totals and some strikeouts due to passivity. Overall, it’s high-level swing decisions with above-average game power. He has enough bat-to-ball skills to avoid the three-true-outcome label, but his average will fluctuate due to his flyball heavy approach. Defensively he can handle centerfield and tests highly on the Astros internal athleticism measurements. He has an unusual build as he’s a bigger bodied player for centerfield, but he has the ability to hit and provide versatility in the outfield.”

Goodness, that's quite a before... I'll relook at him if he makes the big leagues and gets some more photos in the gallery, but for now that should hold ya. Keep him away from steamrollers...

Andrew Politi

The Orioles kicked off what’s become their yearly tradition of trying to get a Rule 5 draft pick to stick on the roster on Wednesday evening, selecting right-handed pitcher Andrew Politi with their pick in the draft. Politi, a 26-year-old who spent most of this season with the Red Sox Triple-A Worcester affiliate, was originally a 15th round draft pick in the 2018 draft. No Orioles players were selected in the major league portion of the draft.

Politi really seemed to blossom this year, at least in terms of his results, after several years of unremarkable performance lower down in the minors. The 6’0” righty split the season between Double-A and Triple-A, posting a combined 2.34 ERA in 69.1 innings over 50 games. That included a strong strikeout rate and strikeout/walk ratio, as well as a combined WHIP of under 1.00.

Boston did not choose to summon Politi to MLB with that performance, nor add him to their 40-man roster last month, so he was there for the taking by the Orioles.

In a quick scouting report after the Rule 5, MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis said that Politi’s arsenal is “a mid-90s fastball, mid-80s slider, an upper-80s cutter and a low-80s curveball.” Another evaluator, Baseball America’s JJ Cooper, praised the pick in an interview with MASN’s Steve Melewski. Cooper said “if I were looking for a player in this year’s Rule 5 draft, Politi is one of the ones that most stands out (to fit into a bullpen).” - camdenchat.com

Let the "before" facegen remind us that not everyone needs a facegen, especially if the picture is taken in dark shadow...

Justin Martinez

Martinez has a very electric fastball, in the 97-100 MPH range with good carry at the top of the strike zone thanks to a spin rate around 2500 RPM. (MLB average is 2276) His fastball movement is almost purely vertical, which is the type of profile that the Diamondbacks covet. When located at the top of the zone, he blows away hitters with velocity. His slider and changeup don't have a great movement profile, but enough horizontal movement to be complementary to his fastball. Command is a big concern, as he's still more of a thrower than a pitcher at this stage of his career.

Given his high-octane arm and how quickly the D-backs moved Martinez up the system, it's a safe bet that he'll be added to the 40-man roster. That will put him in the mix for a potential bullpen spot next spring, with an assignment to Triple-A Reno should he not win one. - Sports Illustrated

We'll see if he gets any other photo options come Spring Training. Until then, this will suffice, I think.

Not sure...

... what the collective noun for Bickersons is - I'm gonna run with "conversation".

Here, to be dealt with as you FG legends see fit, is a conversation of Bickersons.

Jerry Turbidy
Harry Trekell
Billy "Ed" Colgan
Pat Callaghan
Josh Bunce

Merry Xmas to all, hope everyone is staying safe in the crazy weather I see you are having Stateside.

Thank you. For 1969, I/we are missing Tommie Aaron. I find that hard to believe but there are no files remotely close to him. We have Henry Hank and we have Will, but no Tommie.

Use the one on page 165 for now. I may do a new one sometime for my pack once I clear some of my backlog but AESP just did one.

Historical Minors IDs. The first place the game looks for a match. All mine are at least. The big CUF pack itself has a ton of duplicates and old IDs in it. (Like -bil at the end instead of -wil and First_Last). Once databases are consolidated, I’d be happy to assist proofing it so it aligns perfectly w the bRef minors IDs - so no old or missing ones remain in OOTP. (Also so records match the right guy per the noted errors in the historical bug thread). That’d also include replacing the NeL minors IDs Spritz invented back in the day (-049 ones, etc) with bRef ones.

Junior Moore

On the final day of Spring Training in 1980, Junior Moore failed to make the Chicago White Sox roster and was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to begin the season. After a month, he was back in Chicago and given an opportunity to win the third base position. He performed well in his brief trial, batting .256 but was another victim of a numbers game in the White Sox infield and was again sent to the minors. He received another recall in September but played in only four games. 1980 would be the final season of his five-year career.

Born Alvin Earl Moore, the righthanded hitting Junior was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1971. He began in the Braves chain as an outfielder but was eventually converted to an infielder as a faster path to the majors. A line drive hitter with good speed, Moore hit .300 in four of six minor league seasons and was a multiple-time minor league All-Star. He made his major league debut in 1976 when he was given a brief September look. The following season, he earned the Braves starting third base job and he batted .260 with 5 home runs and 34 RBI. After his rookie year, a unique clause in his contract allowed him to leave the Braves and he signed on with the Chicago White Sox in November of 1977.

With the White Sox, he spent the next three years primarily as a utility player, appearing at six different positions. Moore was also a very popular player and manager in the Mexican minor leagues after completing his big-league career. He later coached later coached college baseball at both Patten University in Oakland and Bethany College in Scotts Valley, California. - 1980toppsbaseball.blogspot.com

In late November 1970, the Cubs traded a trio of minor-league prospects — pitchers Pat Jacquez and Dave Lemonds and first baseman/outfielder Roe Skidmore — to the White Sox for a pair of fringe big-leaguers, first baseman Ossie Blanco and center fielder Jose Ortiz.

But you knew that already, right?

Of course, you didn’t. As trade pieces go, each of those five players fell in the forest and didn’t make a sound. What’s to remember? Really, there have been two main themes to Cubs-Sox trades through the years: rarity and — with a handful of exceptions — irrelevance. - chicago.suntimes.com

Here's my try at him. I didn't see a "before" in the CUF pack - at least not under the correct ID. I debated the facial lines but decided, I liked the smirk look it gave.
