July 1950
It's a whole new world in the AL. The A's are proving to be no fluke, going 15-10 in July and pulling out to a 3-game lead over the White Sox. They rank 2nd in the majors in both runs scored and fewest runs allowed. Meanwhile, the Yankees caught fire, going 18-6 and moving into 3rd place, just 7 games out. The Yanks and A's are two young teams with impressive farm systems. This could be the beginning of a long, long stretch with these two teams among the top teams in the league. In the 40's, we grew used to seeing the Senators, Red Sox and Tigers leading the pack. Right now, it's the A's, White Sox, Yankees and Browns. Detroit is just a game above .500 and Boston and Washington hold the two worst records in the league. The Cardinals went 15-11 and improved their lead over a listless Phillies team to 4.5 games. The Braves are still in 3rd and Cincinnati improved to 4 games above .500. Giants' "rookie" 1B Ervin Thompson set a new National League record with 22 rookie homeruns on July 19th. He hit the shot in the 1st inning of a 14-3 blowout loss to the Cardinals off all-star Grady Ingram. He tied the record the day before. American League-Pitcher of the Month: John Skoropat (NYA)! He had a record of 4-0 in 5 games started, with an ERA of 1.27 and 2 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Luther Ormiston (DET)! He batted .372 in 86 AB, with 9 homers and 27 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Ace Shipley (STL)! He had a record of 4-0 in 5 games started, with an ERA of 1.45. National League-Batter of the Month: Mike Fellner (STL)! He batted .433 in 97 AB, with 9 homers and 28 RBI. Code:

Very. A decade of the A's and the Yanks going at it every year is a distinct possibility
As for the NL, barring a major slump the Cards are looking good. Then again, they did in 1948 too..... And with my second best pitching going down for the resy of the year and my star SS hobbled.....ya i'm lucky if I can stay at .500

> Chaucer got hosed. Plain and simple.
> McMurray and Nunez over him? Nunez > doesn't even play 1st base! As people pointed out, Tito Jr. does play 1B for the card since McMurray was traded to the Reds, and Mitts hit the wall. He had a really nice year there last season, one of the best of his career. I agree that he was having a fine year there this season as well before having a tough July (.269/.317/.376). Chaucer was robbed, and the park continues to kill him. 4 HR at home, and 21 on the road. It's insane, frankly, since the park got *better* this year for RHB. It's total death on LHB HR hitters. Funny enough, over in the AL, Comiskey is suppose to be death on LHB HR hitters, but Lonny has a 10/17 split. It's hurting him, at about the rate one might expect... but nothing like Chaucer is getting killed. 4/21 - Chaucer (R) 8/9 - Fisher (R) 8/7 - Leibowitz (R) 6/1 - Moore (R) 4/4 - Zenisek (R) 4/4 - Pazik (R) 3/3 - Shadle (S) 2/5 - Brekke (R) Seems like it's mostly killing Chaucer to make up for the entire team... which sucks. Odd stats as Frank Smith winds down his career:
1.) BBs jump from 29 (!) in 341 IP six years ago to three straight 100-walk seasons, with the one in progress nearing a walk every 2nd IP. I recognize that pitchers lose "stuff" as they age, but dont recall a trend toward wildness on this level IRL, which leads me to suspicions about the accuracy of the aging module in regards to realistic pitching skills in declining years. 2.) HRA leaping from mid-teens per 300 IP to 32 in 219 innings, a whopping one per 7 innings pitched. This figure seems strangely inflated too, given that the power-pitching indications ( K/9IP and HA/IP ) dont appear significantly depleted from previous seasons, and higher HRA totals are typically associated more often with control pitchers than with hurlers with control issues. Still, despite a brutally inept offensive team, #22 has cranked out a surprisingly robust season with 25% of the team's victories, capped perhaps by the recent 7 shutout innings against the powerful Cardinals. Maybe 450 isnt out of the question after all ( 'tho it would be miraculous to occur this year, unless FS runs the table...). |
