Louis Clarizio
Outfielder Louis Clarizio was one of the few white players to play in the Negro Leagues. He played with the Chicago American Giants in 1950. Photos of him have been posted of him on this thread previously, but this is the first one that shows him in an American Giants uniform when he was of playing age. He died on October 22, 2025.

Louis Chirban
Pitcher Louis Chirban was another of the rare white players in the Negro Leagues. He was also on the 1950 Chicago American Giants. A photo of him in an American Giants uniform was previously posted on this thread on the following page:
https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...99642&page=131 The photo below is a better quality photo of him in an American Giants uniform. |

There are some photos of players of the era, thou not many. None of the players mentioned in this thread are pictured in the book. There are 25 photos including Esteban Bellán ,the first cuban to make it to the Major Leagues ( Yes , he played in the National Association in 1871-73) |

Accordingly to cuban author jorge Figueredo there is one Francisco Hernández playing From 1888 to 1895 with Fe, Habana and Almendares teams. Is on his book Who's Who in Cuban Baseball ( McFarland & Company, 2003. There are some photos of players of the era, thou not many. None of the players mentioned in this thread are pictured in the book. There are 25 photos including Esteban Bellán ,the first cuban to make it to the Major Leagues ( Yes , he played in the National Association in 1871-1873). |

1920 Detroit Star team image
Other than Holland and Petway have the others in this great pic
been identified? I can't find that info. Thanks. I've been trying to find an image anywhere of JW (Gunbooat) Thompson. Last edited by Ctrane; 03-02-2026 at 01:42 PM. |

1920 Detroit Star Team Photo
Quote:
Top row (L to R): Bill Holland, Edgar Wesley, Bruce Petway, Charlie Harper, William Gatewood, Unknown, Unknown. Middle row: Buck Hewitt, Pete Hill, Tenny Blount (owner), Jimmie Lyons, Andy Cooper. Bottom row: Unknown, William Force, Orville Riggins, Unknown. I suppose Gunboat could be one of the "unknowns," but that's as close as I can get. For the Seamheads listing of the 1920 Detroit Stars, the following players lack photos: Alonzo Longware (19 games), Charley Hill (22 games), Chick Harper (22 games), William Carter (9 games), Eugene Scott (7 games), Gunboat Thompson (9 games) and a couple of one-game guys with unknown first names. Chick Harper is in the team photo. We have not found photos anywhere for Carter, Hill, Longware, Scott, or Thompson. Given that there are four unknowns pictured in the 1920 team photo, there is a 4 out of 5 chance that Gunboat Thompson is one of them. |
