Todd Frohwirth - Sox
Just discovered in a Google search - a Getty image of the elusive Frohwirth taken during one of his 22 games with the club in 1994.

Doug Smith - Red Sox, 1912
Found at the following link:
https://medium.com/@BaseballObscura/...n-1ee47e01580a An image of 1-game 1912 Red Sox pitcher Doug Smith who, according to the linked article, was a victim of early 20th-century mixed-race bigotry. |

Red Sox Spring Training, 1907
Found this group shot on Wikipedia's 1907 Boston Americans' Season page. The guy on the ground is identified as their trainer, Charlie Green.
From left to right - 1) Player is identified as "Railing", but there is no player named Railing in BR. I think he bears a resemblance to Sox player Jack Hoey, pictured at the bottom right below. Thoughts? 2) Identified as Killian, but there is no player in Sox history with that name. There was a Tiger pitcher named Ed Killian at that time, and there is a resemblance, and the Tigers were wearing black pants at the time. BUT - Killian was 5' 11", which would put him 2 inches taller than #3, who is Ralph Glaze, who checked in at 5'9". I think (Hope?) #2 might be Tex Pruiett - he had a cleft chin and was an inch shorter than Glaze (image of Pruiett below between the larger image and Hoey) . 3) Ralph Glaze 4) Unidentified - any assistance would be appreciated. 5) 'Nuf Ced McGreevey 6) Cy Young 7) Rube Kroh Thanks for any assistance! Yanks Make 1st Move, But It's a Long Winter
Quote:
Yankees fans are crowing about firing the first salvo of the offseason with the Paxton trade.. Some are declaring "We're Back!!" However I'm waiting for the Red Sox to make an inevitable countermove. I still think the Yankees will go 0 for the 2010-2019 decade, Finishing the decade with No World Series titles and No American League titles.....Not with that powerhouse that the Red Sox have over in Boston.(One of the greatest Regular Season and Post-Season teams of Living Memory.) |

Red Sox Spring Training 1907
#1 -- The Boston Globe of Jan. 10, 1907 reported the following:
"Treas McBreen (of the Red Sox) said that he had not heard officially that the Boston deal for Thomas Railing of the Dallas, Tex., club had gone through, but the Pres Taylor and Manager Stahl had made an offer for the player while in Chicago, and the news that the Dallas management had accepted terms was probably correct. Railing is a young fellow, but is a six-footer, and made a splendid record as a southpaw in the Texas League." So it sounds like Tom Railing is correct identification for #1. https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=railin001tho #2 -- The Boston Globe of March 5, 1907 reported on various Red Sox players working out during a spring training session. Railing was mentioned as having pitched, but not looking very promising. More relevant to #2 is the following sentence -- "Tennehill, Oberlin, Killian, Pruiet (sic) and Glaze worked out with the batters this afternoon." With the exception of Killian, all are known to have been pitchers with the 1907 Red Sox during the regular season. The Boston Globe of Dec. 5, 1906 reported on prospects for spring training the following year. Included on the "official list of new players that the Boston Americans will try out next spring" is: Killian, pitcher, Burlington, Ia. That would seem to be #2. John Killian didn't have the kind of pitching record which would suggest his being a major league prospect, but I suppose that's always an outside possibility for being the fellow from Burlington, Iowa. He certainly had played for the Burlington minor league team for three years. The link to his B-R.com record is below: https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=killia001joh Last edited by Cusick; 11-25-2018 at 12:35 PM. Reason: Further thoughts on Killian. |

Red Sox Spring Training of 1907
Thanks for the information - I've posted something in the minor league player thread trying to get images of either Killian or Railing for comparison.
Any notion as to who #3 might be - I can see a little bit of Pruiett, but that might just be wishful thinking. |

Charles "Tex" Pruiett 1907
This image is a 1914 Zeenuts card of Pruiett, and shows him with the Oakland PCL minor league team.
I think this photo cinches it that #4 in the 1907 Red Sox spring training photo is Charles Pruiett. With the exception of the trainer on the ground in the front, and McGreevey (a super-fan) in the back, all the others in the photo are pitchers, so it would be fitting that Pruiett, another pitcher, would be the final piece of the puzzle. |

Tom Dougherty 1904
Dougherty pitched on April 24, 1904 in relief for the Chicago White Sox. He retired every batter he faced in the 2 innings he was on the mound. He was featured quite prominently in the team photo (which I have attached). And yet, he never got another opportunity in the majors.

Elmer Stricklett 1904
Stricklett pitched in 1 game for the Chicago White Sox in 1904. We are fortunate he is pictured in their spring training team photo.

Charlie Jones 1901
Here's another player who had a very brief career with the Chicago White Sox. Jones got into 5 games with the 1904 White Sox and then spent the rest of the season playing for St. Paul. He resurfaced the following season as a terrible starting Outfielder for Washington.

Fred Payne 1906
Payne (pictured here with the 1908 Tigers) was a guy that played for a good number of years in the big leagues despite a career batting average of .215 and slugging % of .262. Perhaps it was that icy stare...

Jack Hoey, continued...
Before moving on to other things...
Attached are: an isolated image of #1 from the 1907 Sox image above, ID'd as Railing (to be clear, the Wikipedia page IDs him as Railing, but the original image, floating around on the net and which I cannot find any longer, ID'd him as "?" in old handwriting on the reverse); Next, an image of Hoey from Baseball Prospectus (previously misidentified by me as being from BR) Then, an image of Hoey isolated from a team photo of the 1910 Waterbury, CT minor league team. Finally, an image of Railing isolated from a 1907 Tecumseh photo (I've included one of his teammates who should be familiar to many people on this board). I see a strong resemblance between the 1907 Sox and BR photos, and a resemblance between the Waterbury image and the other two - ears, mouth, nose, eyes/brows, hair. While I see a fleeting similarity between the Sox image and Railing, Railing's mouth seems smaller relative to the nose, and his whole head has an elongated appearance, rather than the rounder look on the others. What say you all? |

Hiding in plain sight - this short-tenured Royals 1984-85 outfielder was, golly, shown in the team's '85 yearbook:

So too was this lefty pitcher whose career spanned just two appearances, on September 17 and October 2.
