Here's hoping Matt misses the Giants prediction by as many places as last season.

Watch out for that Dietrich kid
Not that great of defense but an above average arm.

Will his being 20 years old limit his HOF potential or is 3000 hits in his future?

Looks about like I would have predicted... I'd kinda hoped the rest of the NL would stand pat and rely on the Phillies dropping over the next couple of years, and let the Cubs sneak in a pennant win if the Phillies bombed this season. I'd seriously thought about not making many changes myself... I really had no intentions of trading Ward when I drafted him, but I just couldn't resist the Reds' offer. A lot depends on Liebermann, if he can realize his promise by next season, and I can squeeze a second year out of Emberling, 1951 is the year I'm really shooting for now.

One of the benefits of the current Cubs is, I still have some options... There are a few good prospects left (though not to the extent of the ones I had) to try to pick up help midseason if the Cubs are at all close... Or I could go the reverse route and move a player I picked up for prospects if it looks like the trades were a bad move. I like having the flexibility... though there's a danger of waffling back and forth too much.

I think Matt has underrated the Giants just a touch. I posted my Giants preview on the TWB board. I think we can make a run at 3rd. Or it could all fall apart, one or the other

I'm not sure about 3000 hits, because that's been hard to get lately. He'll probably need to average about 170 hits/year during his career (assuming he retires around 37 or 38). On the bright side, his age means he's more developed (Matt always makes the older guys a bit more developed) and he will likely suffer less talent changes. I've always thought that rookies that enter at 19 or 20 do better than the normal 18 year-olds we have. Dietrich will be peaking in our high offense era of the late 50's. Barring any serious talent bumps, I predict he'll be a perennial All-Star. He'd look good in a Red Sox uni

Personally I like how Matt rated the Red Sox. I thought he was dead on

Nah, the Reds are managed by Canadians. Everybody knows that their baseball knowledge is limited....and that they always trade when they're drunk

If he makes it to his full 9 contact potential than 170 hits a season is a given. Just depends on hitting that rating, injuries and how many years are spent in the minors.
Cleveland looks like it sucks so he may split time in AA and AAA and either get a late season call up or being on the 25 man in 1951.
Personaly I would prefer he spend the full year in the minors and then make a run at ROY in 1951

Edit: Let us also hope our young German friend is not called to Korea to serve in the Marine Corps

I agree, we've already got enough problems, having folks shooting at us would really make life difficult

Poor Frank Smith, the last leaf on a barren tree. One by one, the major league talents on the Dodgers are shipped off to greener pastures, replaced by young players displaying promise for a future he will be no part of. I can only imagine him looking over a clubhouse filled with callow youths, many nearly young enough to date his 16 year-old daughter, and feeling that odd sense of displacement that comes in time to every aging athlete.

I sense a grim determination that this, his probable final campaign, will not be marred by the humiliation of a 20 loss record after so long a career filled with the calm assurance of victory, even as his team declined around him. Never an egoist, but always proud and determined to do his best, Frank is driven to go out a champion after playing in four decades with one team, his beloved Dodgers. In his letters to his wife Vivian, Dad said that all the new young faces made him feel terribly old, and that it looked as if his goal of 450 wins was just out of reach, but he wanted at least nine more, to finish with 100 more than his boyhood idol Andy Murphy. Once that feat was attained, he wrote, " it would be time for old 'Double Deuce' to hang 'em up."

Should be a bittersweet season.

I can only hope that "buzz" translates into "overnight leaps in ratings." Swervin has the youngsters believing they can play with anybody, but the reality is the Yankees are, best case scenario, a year or two from being a serious threat to anyone (unless we can pull a +12 pythagoran out of our hat).

Its been tough to sit back and turn down offers, hoping that the kids keep progressing (like Erickson). Maybe this year the fans in the Bronx will get to see some fruits of their suffering through the last 5+ years.

My prediction: 81 wins, 4-5th in the division.

Really excellent... thanks for the insight!

More like 8 years of suffering... their last winning season was 1941... In 1942, they went from 92 wins and 2nd place to 77 wins... The war really tore that great dynasty apart.

It's funny how when we finally have offense, we have no pitching to sustain it, where as a few years ago it was the oppisite.

If a miracle happened and Peguess, Nagal, Millner, D. McMurray, Makris, Gahan, and Toledo coudl start in the majors and be at their top ratings.....I think we'd clean house

but it's not going to happen so hello Pittsburgh and Brooklyn

Hell no

Frank Smith will retire as a Dodger...I could have gotten him, but I couldn't ask...it be like getting Tony Gwynn or Cal Ripken from the Padres or Orioles. When ya think of Da Bums, you think of the Da Bum done good, Smitty!
