July 7, 1899 Stratton Dominates as Barons Shut Out Rebels Scott Stratton was in a zone of his own, shutting out the Boston Rebels on five hits in a commanding 3-0 victory for the Baltimore Barons. "He was too darn good for us today," Boston manager Tom Brown said in frustration after the game. Stratton’s performance included two strikeouts and three walks, with Baltimore manager Andy Leonard praising his effort. "He had good velocity, good movement, and had those guys off balance. He just pitched his butt off," Leonard remarked during the postgame press conference. Stratton has been a standout this season, boasting a 14-6 record with 35 strikeouts and 41 walks over 167 innings. He holds an impressive 2.64 ERA. Heidrick Extends Streak Despite Stallions’ Loss The Philadelphia Stallions fell 7-1 to the St. Louis Sox, but right fielder Emmet Heidrick continued his hot streak, extending his hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the 9th inning. "Heidrick is playing great and is on fire right now," Stallions manager Dave Birdsall said. "Hopefully his play can spark the rest of our team and help us pick up some wins." Heidrick’s lone hit came after grounding out in the 1st, flying out in the 4th and 6th, and singling in the 9th. Despite his individual success, Heidrick was focused on the team’s struggles, telling reporters, "Nothing else matters but the loss." For the season, Heidrick is hitting .342 with no home runs, 50 RBIs, and 44 runs scored. He has recorded 109 hits, 13 walks, and a .367 on-base percentage, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s top hitters. |

July 9, 1899 Davies Dominates in Rebels’ Shutout Victory George Davies delivered an exceptional performance for the Boston Rebels at Boston Fields, shutting out the Baltimore Barons in a 3-0 victory. The right-hander allowed only five hits, striking out two batters and walking two. "When he started out, his command wasn't that good, but he's a tough guy," Boston manager Tom Brown said. "The more pitches he throws, the better his command is." Baltimore manager Andy Leonard also praised Davies’ effort. "An outstanding job. We couldn't get anything going. Every time we got a hit, he got out of the jam. He pitched a terrific game." This season, Davies has a record of 8 wins and 12 losses with a 3.51 ERA. He has appeared in 25 games, striking out 45 batters over 184.2 innings. Heidrick’s Streak Ends, but Stallions Triumph Philadelphia right fielder Emmet Heidrick’s impressive 21-game hitting streak came to an end against the St. Louis Sox. Heidrick went 0-for-5 at the plate but saw his teammates step up, leading the Stallions to a 3-1 victory at St. Louis Grounds. "Hitting streaks come and go," Heidrick said after the game. "It did put a little pressure on me. It's hard to be natural at the plate with something like that always in the back of your mind. If it had to end, I'm glad it was in a win." Currently, Heidrick boasts a .334 batting average with no home runs, remaining a key contributor to Philadelphia’s offense. |

Hahn limited Washington to just four hits while walking four batters and striking out none. "The bottom line was I just kept the ball down," Hahn explained. "My breaking stuff was down. Everything was down." Philadelphia manager Dave Birdsall praised the team’s collective effort. "Noodles pitched really well, but this was a solid performance by everyone. We got solid pitching, good defense, and took great team at-bats in a lot of different situations," he said in the postgame interview. This season, Hahn has compiled a 12-7 record with a 3.30 ERA over 172 innings. Opposing teams are batting .268 against him, and he has recorded 72 strikeouts. |

July 19, 1899 Stallions Shut Out Barons, 6-0 At Barons Park, the Baltimore Barons were overpowered by Les German and the Philadelphia Stallions, who cruised to a 6-0 victory. German, the Stallions' right-hander, was in top form, limiting the Barons to just three hits while recording one strikeout and walking four. Despite the rainy conditions, German maintained his rhythm throughout the game. "I felt right today," German said after the game. "Even with the rain, it didn't throw me off my rhythm." The win improved German’s season record to 7-11, with an ERA of 4.23 in 22 games. He has struck out 48 batters in 172.1 innings. Caruthers Leads Bandits to Victory Over Americans Bob Caruthers delivered another solid performance on the mound, leading the Columbus Bandits to a 3-0 win over the Washington Americans at Bandits Ballpark. Caruthers allowed just five hits, striking out four batters and walking one. "It was a good team effort today," Caruthers commented. "I pitched well, the guys made some nice plays behind me, and we put up enough runs to go home on time." In addition to his pitching performance, Caruthers extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to 20 games with a single. The right-hander is batting .416 for the season with two home runs. On the mound, he has a 12-9 record and a 2.61 ERA. Tannehill Tosses Shutout in Wildcats' 5-0 Win Over Roughnecks Jesse Tannehill was masterful in the Cincinnati Wildcats' 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Roughnecks at Wildcats Field. The left-hander threw a 3-hit shutout, facing 30 batters without striking out a single one or issuing any walks. Tannehill's record stands at 14-5 for the season, with a 3.39 ERA, further solidifying his place as one of the league's top pitchers. Bausewine Shuts Out Bears in 3-0 Victory The Boston Bears were unable to crack the tough pitching of George Bausewine, who led the New York Saints to a 3-0 victory at Saints Park. The Bears could only muster six hits off Bausewine, who struck out two batters and kept them off the scoreboard throughout the game. Bausewine received a standing ovation from the crowd as he left the field, and the applause continued until he returned from the dugout to acknowledge the fans. "Saints fans are the best fans, in my opinion," Bausewine said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible." Bausewine now holds a 12-9 record with a 2.39 ERA in 21 starts this season, with 45 strikeouts in 188.2 innings. Davis Hits for Cycle in Predators' 11-5 Win Over Hitmen George Davis put on a show at Hitmen Ballpark as the Pittsburgh Predators defeated the Brooklyn Hitmen, 11-5. The Predators' left fielder hit for the cycle, collecting a single, double, triple, and home run, driving in three runs and scoring four. Davis led off the game with a triple, followed by a three-run homer off Stump Wiedman in the second inning. He added a double in the fourth and singled in the sixth. Despite his impressive performance, Davis remained humble, attributing his success to his comfort at the plate. "I felt comfortable in a way I haven't all season," Davis said. "It was like they were throwing beach balls at me – the ball seemed that big. And it just floated in." Davis is batting .311 on the season with two home runs, 68 runs scored, and 35 RBIs. |

July 23, 1899 Hahn Shuts Down Cleveland in 4-0 Victory Noodles Hahn of the Philadelphia Stallions delivered a dominant performance on the mound, tossing a 5-hit complete-game shutout to defeat Cleveland 4-0. Hahn was in complete control throughout the game, striking out three batters and walking none. His remarkable effort led the Stallions to a well-deserved victory. Hahn has now made 22 starts this season, posting a 14-7 record with a 3.05 ERA. He has struck out 77 batters in 192 innings, and opposing teams are batting .260 against him. Sox Snap Caruthers's Streak, Defeat Bandits 7-1 The St. Louis Sox enjoyed a dominant 7-1 victory over the Columbus Bandits at St. Louis Grounds, but the game was also notable for another reason—the end of Bob Caruthers's impressive 22-game hitting streak. The 36-year-old Columbus left fielder went 0-for-3, failing to extend his streak. Sox manager Frank Pearce acknowledged the team's strategy in ending the streak, saying, "Nothing personal against Caruthers, we just wanted to win the game. We did a great job keeping him off-balance and guessing." Caruthers, who has been one of the league's most consistent hitters this season, took the end of his streak in stride. "I won’t lie and say that I’m not disappointed about it," Caruthers said. "But I’d feel much better if we had won." Caruthers is hitting .411 this season with 129 hits, 2 home runs, 51 RBIs, and 64 runs scored. |

July 24, 1899 Chesbro Shuts Out Cardinals in 6-0 Victory St. Louis's Jack Chesbro pitched a dominant 6-0 shutout against the Cardinals, allowing just two hits while striking out one. Chesbro, who confessed he didn't feel like he had his best stuff, still breezed through the Cardinals' lineup with ease. "I didn't really feel like I had my A-game today," Chesbro admitted. "But some days are like that—you just gotta go with what you have." Despite the strong performance, Chesbro's season has been a struggle, as he now holds a 5-15 record with a 5.18 ERA. Parrott Pitches Boston to 6-0 Win Over Predators Tom Parrott was on top of his game, leading the Boston Bears to a 6-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Predators. Parrott was efficient, allowing only four hits, striking out one batter, and walking two in the complete-game shutout. "I'm getting a lot more downward movement instead of side to side," Parrott explained. "That side-to-side stuff can get hit a long way. It’s not rocket science. It was just a little adjustment, but that’s all it took." The win was a reflection of Parrott’s solid pitching, as he improved his season record with the shutout. At the plate, Parrott has added some value with 21 hits in 87 at-bats, though he has yet to hit a home run. His .241 batting average includes 7 RBIs and 8 runs scored. Keeler’s Streak Ends in Roughnecks’ 6-0 Win Over Chicago Willie Keeler’s remarkable 24-game hitting streak came to an end in a 6-0 loss to the St. Louis Roughnecks at Roughnecks Field. Keeler went hitless in four at-bats, as the Roughnecks not only defeated Chicago but also halted the streak of one of the league's top hitters. "It was a good run," Keeler said after the game. "It would be much easier to take right now if we had won." Keeler continues to lead the league with a .397 batting average, 148 hits, and has also contributed 1 home run, 40 RBIs, and 66 runs scored. His on-base percentage stands at a solid .438. |

July 28, 1899 Monte Cross to Miss Time for Personal Reasons St. Louis Roughnecks third baseman Monte Cross will be sidelined for an indefinite period to tend to "personal issues," the player announced today. Cross, who declined to elaborate on the nature of these issues, explained they were "more important than baseball, that's for sure." Roughnecks manager Frank Bell acknowledged the team's need to adjust without Cross for the foreseeable future. "We’ll expect to be without Cross for quite some time, and we'll have to plan long-term to be without him," Bell said. Sparks Shines in Cardinals' 3-0 Shutout of Bears Tully Sparks delivered an outstanding performance, leading the Chicago Cardinals to a 3-0 shutout over the Boston Bears. Sparks limited Boston to just four hits, striking out one batter and issuing no walks in the complete-game victory. Boston’s hitters struggled to make contact with Sparks’s pitches, with opposing manager George Derby noting, "When you face a guy who hides the ball like he does, it takes a couple of at-bats to try to find his release point. We just never figured him out." Sparks has started 23 games this season, pitching 174.2 innings, and has a record of 8 wins and 14 losses with a 3.97 ERA. Allen Goes 5-for-5 in Saints' 19-6 Victory Over Thunder In an unexpected offensive explosion, New York second baseman Bob Allen went 5-for-5, leading the Saints to a 19-6 blowout victory over the Philadelphia Thunder at Thunder Ballpark. Allen, who is not typically known for his offensive prowess, stunned fans and reporters with his stellar performance. "Hey, I’m as surprised as you guys are," Allen said with a smile. "Maybe I'm not so bad at the plate after all." Allen contributed in nearly every inning, hitting a two-run double in the first, another double in the second, a two-run triple in the third, walking in the sixth, and adding two RBI singles in the seventh and ninth innings. Allen’s batting average this season stands at .288, with two home runs. July 30, 1899 Predators Trade for Jones and Coughlin in Swap with Bucks The Pittsburgh Predators announced today the acquisition of left-handed pitcher Cowboy Jones and first baseman Bill Coughlin from the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for right fielder Jimmy Slagle and third baseman Jim Delahanty. "This isn't the deal of the century," the Predators' front office stated, "but we think it will improve the direction of both teams." Coughlin, 22, has struggled this season, hitting just .091 with 2 hits in 22 at-bats. He has not hit any home runs, contributing only 3 RBIs and 2 runs in 24 games. The trade, while not a major splash, is hoped to help both teams as they look to bolster their respective rosters. Weyhing Shines in Stallions’ 1-0 Shutout of Rebels Gus Weyhing delivered an outstanding performance on the mound, leading the Philadelphia Stallions to a 1-0 shutout victory over the Boston Rebels. Weyhing allowed just 8 hits, fanned 2 batters, and walked 6 in a dominant effort that left Boston's hitters struggling throughout the game. "That's as good of stuff as I've seen in a long time," said Boston manager Tom Brown after the game. Weyhing's record now stands at 9-10, with a 3.93 ERA across 23 starts this season. Dolan Dominates in Hitmen's 6-0 Victory Over Roughnecks Cozy Dolan was untouchable as he led the Brooklyn Hitmen to a 6-0 win over the St. Louis Roughnecks. Dolan scattered 7 hits over the course of the game, striking out 2 batters and keeping the Roughnecks off balance with his pitching. With the victory, Dolan improved his season record to 12-7, with an impressive 2.34 ERA in 23 starts. His strong performance was a key factor in the Hitmen's shutout victory. |

End of July Review
The Baseball Times
August 1st, 1899 St. Louis Sox Surge, Milwaukee Buck Falters in American Conference Shake-Up After a fiercely contested July, the landscape of the Professional Baseball Association has seen a major shift. The American Conference standings were turned upside down as the St. Louis Sox surged to the top, overtaking the Milwaukee Buck, who had led for much of the season. The Sox now lead the Baltimore Barons by 3 games, showing their dominance over the month. Meanwhile, the Buck, who once had a commanding lead, have fallen back into the pack, now trailing by 9 games. The shifting tides in the American Conference have raised hopes among Sox fans, while Milwaukee will look to recover in the second half of the season. In contrast, the National Conference has seen little change at the top. The Cincinnati Wildcats have maintained a commanding 8-game lead, with the Pittsburgh Predators and New York Saints holding steady in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Kip Selbach Dominates American Conference, Earns Batter of the Month Honors Kip Selbach, the 28-year-old star for the St. Louis Sox, delivered an outstanding July, earning the American Conference Batter of the Month award. Over the span of 23 games, Selbach hit a remarkable .453, with 2 home runs, 31 RBIs, and 24 runs scored, showcasing both power and consistency at the plate. His performance was a key factor in the Sox's rise in the standings. "I've been around the Professional Baseball Association long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," Selbach told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." Currently, Selbach is batting .401 for the season with 3 home runs, 79 RBIs, and 65 runs scored through 84 games, solidifying his place among the league's top players. Nap Lajoie Shines Again, Claims National Conference Batter of the Month Cincinnati Wildcats' star Nap Lajoie continues to dazzle in 1899. The 25-year-old has been named the National Conference Batter of the Month for July, marking his second such honor this season and the 8th of his career. Lajoie's performance was nothing short of spectacular. He hit .410 for the month, belting 2 home runs, driving in 28 RBIs, and scoring 21 runs. His consistency at the plate has been a driving force behind the Wildcats' continued dominance of the National Conference. On the season, Lajoie is batting .400 with 13 home runs, 91 RBIs, and 70 runs scored, further solidifying his position as one of the league's most formidable hitters. As Cincinnati continues to hold an 8-game lead, Lajoie’s impressive play is a big reason why they remain in control. Standings |

August 3rd, 1899 Jim Gardner Leads Baltimore to Shutout Win Jim Gardner delivered an outstanding performance at Cleveland Grounds, pitching the Baltimore Barons to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Cleveland Royals. "He threw strikes and he was always around the plate," said Cleveland manager Jim Field. "The ball was doing everything he wanted it to do. We hit some balls hard, but they were all right at the fielders." Gardner, a right-hander, allowed just three hits over nine innings, striking out two and walking three. The win improves his season record to 11-7, with an ERA of 3.44. August 4th, 1899 Bill Lange Shines, but Royals Fall Short Bill Lange had a stellar game at the plate, going 5-for-6 in a fine display of hitting against the Baltimore Barons. Despite Lange’s efforts, the Cleveland Royals fell to the Barons, 4-3, in an 11-inning contest. "I got the pitches I was looking for and I connected," Lange said. "Some days you hit shots and they're right at somebody and some days they fall in." Lange’s impressive outing included a triple in the 1st inning, an RBI single in the 3rd, and singles in the 5th, 7th, and 11th innings. He grounded out in the 8th. This season, Lange is batting .401 with 150 hits and 2 home runs. He has scored 78 runs and recorded 71 RBIs, solidifying his place as one of the league’s top hitters. |

August 5th, 1899 Charlie Hickman Injured in Predators' Victory Pittsburgh Predators’ dual-threat player Charlie Hickman suffered a fractured rib during his pitching appearance in today’s 13-4 victory over the New York Saints. The injury will sideline Hickman for five weeks as he recovers. Hickman has been a key contributor for the Predators this season, both on the mound and at the plate. As a pitcher, he holds a 10-11 record with a 3.61 ERA across 23 starts. Offensively, he has appeared in 96 games, posting a .326 batting average with 6 home runs, 72 runs scored, and 69 RBIs. The Predators will need to adjust their lineup during Hickman’s absence as they continue their season campaign. |
