NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NEWS
CHAMPION CHAPS COACH STEPS DOWN
Nick Woods, who coached the Dallas Chaparrals to the NBA championship last week has announced his retirement. The 74 year old Woods had a career coaching record of 488-474 and retires after winning his first NBA title. The Chaps are expected to announce a replacement next week. Rumour has it assistant Mickey Smith may be in line for the job.

Meanwhile, the other finalist has extended the contract of it's coach. Terms were not released but Baltimore will bring veteran coach Luke Ware back for at least one more season.

FORMER CCNY STAR MCCLINTIC RETIRES FROM NBA
Veteran New York Knickerbockers power forward Zaki McClintic has announced his retirement after a 13 year NBA career. McClintic never lived up to the hype surrounding him when he first entered the league after being named the NCAA player of the year in his final season at CCNY. A first round pick of Indianapolis (8th overall) in 1934 McClintic spent 4 seasons with the Olympians. He made the all-rookie team in 1934-35 by averaging 12.9 ppg and 7.0 rpg. He left Indianapolis for Buffalo in 1938 and was a key reserve on the Braves during his 4 years with that organization. He would then have stops in Syracuse, St Louis and Fort Wayne before winding up his career in the city he enjoyed his college success.

In 820 career games McClintic average 8.4 ppg. He played in 33 playoff games and was a key contributer in Indianapolis' run to the finals in 1935, a run that ulitmately fell short in a championship series 4-game sweep at the hands of Philadelphia.

BUCKEYE STARS HAVE EYES ON FIRST ROUND
In an effort to familiarize the readers with the top players available in the June 4th NBA draft, I will take a look back at the college careers of many of the potential first rounders. We start with a look at a couple of Ohio State Buckeyes who expect to hear their names called very early on June 4th.

Senior forward Paul *Huston is a possible first overall pick. Named to the Big 10 all-conference team, Huston was second in the conference in ppg (16.6) and third in rebounds (11.5). The one weak spot in his game has been his free throw shooting which has steadily got worse through his college career. After helping the Buckeyes to the elite 8 in 1945-46, Huston and his teammates were dissappointed to exit the NCAA tourney in the second round this season.

Huston holds the Ohio State record for points in a season with 643 in 1944-45 as well as the Big 10 record for field goals made in a season at 244.

Junior Ohio State center Arnie *Risen decide to forego his final year of eligibilty and enter the NBA draft where, despite a large number of centers available, he should be a mid-first round pick. Risen was third on the Buckeyes with 12.4 ppg and 9.7 rpg. He also led the team in blocked shots and led the Big 10 in field goal percentage. Risen has decent potential but might have been a first overall pick if he spent one more season in college.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
DEAN WINS AGAIN - YANKEES TOP SENS 3-2
Dizzy Dean improved his record to 5-0 and the New York Yankees continue to be the hottest team in baseball after a 3-2 win over the Senators in Washington. Veteran OF Dixie Walker delivered an rbi single in the first to give New York the early lead but Washington scored twice in the bottom half of the inning thanks to 4 singles off of Dean. From there Dean would settle down and allow just one more hit the rest of the way. The Yankees would scratch out a couple of runs in later innings off of losing pitcher Joe Haynes and Dizzy would have his 5th win of the season.

The 37 year old Dean is one of the biggest surprises of the season. He is 5-0 with a 1.85 era and putting up numbers that we have not seen from him since the late 1930's. The last time Dean won more than 9 games in a season was way back in 1939.

RED SOX WIN TWO IN A ROW
The Boston Red Sox are no longer the coldest team in the majors. That distinction now falls on the Chicago White Sox who suffered their 7th straight loss. The Red Sox got 4 rbi's from Stan Spence and 3 hits from Dom Dimaggio as they blasted the visiting White Sox 12-7 at Fenway.

In St Louis, Al Williams and Bob Muncrief combined on a 5-hitter as the Browns beat Detroit 2-1 in 10 innings. Sig Gryska drove in the winning run with a bases loaded single off of Red Lynn.

Jeff Heath's 2-run triple in the bottom of the first helped Bill Lohrman run his record to 5-0 as Cleveland doubled Philadelphia 4-2. Lohrman allowed 6 hits over 8 innings while Ray Poat pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.

NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP
ROE OUTDUELS SCHANZ AS PIRATES TOP PHILS 4-1
Preacher Roe improved to 5-0 with a complete game 4-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates handed Charley Schanz his first loss of the season. Pittsburgh managed 11 hits off of Schanz (5-1) and beat the Phillies by a 4-1 score.

In other National League action:

Sam Chapman's 3-run homer keyed a 5-run outburst in the bottom of the 8th as Boston handed the New York Giants their 7th straight loss, 9-6. Braves starting pitcher Jesse Flores left the game in the fourth inning with a back injury. He was placed on the DL and will miss the next two weeks.

Enos Slaughter and Walker Cooper homered as St Louis doubled Cincinnati 8-4 while in Brooklyn, the Chicago Cubs beat up the Dodgers 11-3. Harlond Clift hit a pair of homers for the Cubs to give him 9 on the season.

FERENS RETURNS TO MOUND TONIGHT FOR ST LOUIS
After nearly a full year recovering from back surgery St Louis Cardinals pitcher Stan Ferens returns to action today in Cincinnati. Ferens was 25-12 two seasons ago and off to a 5-1 start last year before rupturing a disk in his back. It was the first major injury the 32 year old ever suffered and the Cards are anxious to see if he can pick up where he left off.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE OFFSEASON NEWS
SEAHAWKS SIGN TE WILLIE MCKNIGHT
Former Baltimore Ravens tight end Willie McKnight has agreed to a 2 year deal with the Seattle Seahawks. McKnight, who has spent the last three seasons with the Ravens, started 15 games last year and had 48 catches incluidng a pair of touchdown grabs. His best year was 1945 when he had 62 catches during the season and another 16 in the playoffs as the Ravens won the NFL Championship. Originally drafted by Carolina in the 6th round of the 1941 draft, the former Temple start spent three seasons primarily on special teams for the Panthers before getting a chance to start when he joined the Ravens in 1944.

McKnight's arrival likely spells the end of Dale Heinrich's days as Seattle's starting tight end. The former Nebraska Cornhusker started every game in franchise history until losing his job to rookie Anthony LaFavor for a few weeks last season. Heinrich and LaFavor combined to make 40 catches a year ago.

In other signing news Oakland inked punter Steve Wrightster to a 1-year deal. Wrightster spent 6 seasons as the Lions punter but they choose not to renew his contract this season. Wrightster will compete with incumbant Erwin Ortego for the starting job in Oakland.

INDIANAPOLIS 500
EXCITEMENT STARTING TO BUILD AT THE BRICKYARD
Testing is underway all this week at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as drivers prepare for this weekend's first stage of qualifying. In practice runs Ted Horn appears to have the quickest car as he unofficially was approaching speeds of 128 miles an hour. The fastest time ever recorded in qualifying was 130.138 set by Jimmy Snyder in 1939.

In addition to Horn, other drivers who looked very good in Tuesday's practice include Rex Mays, Freddie Agabashian and Shorty Cantlon.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
HAVE THE RED SOX TURNED THINGS AROUND?
After a dreadful 3-15 start the Boston Red Sox celebrated their third straight victory when they topped Chicago 7-4. Johnny Pesky's bases loaded double led the Boston offense while pitcher Bob Bowman pitched 8 strong innings.

"I think we have finally shaken this thing," said outfielder Mel Almada who had 3 hits in the game. "In the past month it got to where we were all just waiting for something to go wrong each game. A few wins can cure that in a hurry."

The big test for the Red Sox comes this weekend when they host the New York Yankees in a 3 game series at Fenway. Unlike the White Sox, who are now stuck in an 8 game slump and likely feeling like the Red Sox did a week ago, the Yanks are the hottest team in the league.

Speaking of the Yankees, they did not win yesterday but came very close. New York scored once in the top of the ninth but could not get the tying runner past second base as they lost 6-5 to Washington. Dixie Walker's 3-run homer in the 5th got New York close after Washington had built a 5-1 lead. Red Barrett earned the victory for the Sens, his first of the season to go along with 3 losses. 40 year old Jumbo Brown falls to 2-3 for the Yanks.

Steve Gromek improved to 4-0 as Cleveland scored 3 times in the bottom of the 8th inning to beat Philadelphia 5-4. Lou Boudreau singled in the winning run off losing pitcher Bill Voiselle.

In St Louis, Detroit 3rd baseman Joe Wood drove in 5 runs and second baseman Joe Gantenbein had 3 hits in the Tigers 10-4 mauling of the Browns. Stubby Overmire went the distance to improve his record to 3-2.

ROOKIE HURLER HOUTTEMAN LEADS REDS
Art Houtteman is making quite an early case for the National League rookie of the year award. The Cincinnati Reds hurler reeled off his fourth straight victory as the Reds dropped St Louis 6-2. Houtteman helped his own cause by getting a pair of hits and his first major league rbi. Joe Medwick homered for the Reds, who are 3-2 since losing Joe Dimaggio for a couple of weeks with an injury. Houtteman showed veteran poise, pitching out of a couple of jams to improve to 4-1 on the season. His only loss came in his major league debut against reigning Cy Young Award winner Cliff Melton and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Despite the loss Stan Ferens can feel good about his first major league appearance in nearly a year. A 25 game winner 2 years ago, Ferens pronounced himself fully recovered from back surgery and ready to rejoin the Cardinals rotation full time.

In other action Joe Gordon homered and drove in 4 runs as Philadelphia dropped first place Pittsburgh 11-4.

In Boston, pinch-hitter Johnny Rucker's 2-run double in the 10th inning keyed an 8-5 New York victory over the Braves.

Dodgers hurler Les Webber tossed a complete game 4-hit shutout for his first victory of the season as Brooklyn blanked the visiting Chicago Cubs 5-0. Pee Wee Reese homered and newcomer Frank McCormick had 2 rbi's for the winners.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION DRAFT PREVIEW
DEFENSIVE WHIZ SMITH LOOKS TO DRAFT
USC power forward Joseph Smith may not be one of the best offensive players available in the NBA draft but you would be hard pressed to find a more imposing defensive force than the 6'10" senior from Sebastopol, California. Smith, who finished 7th in the nation with 14.6 rebounds per game, was a major reason why the Trojans made a surprising run all the way to the NCAA title game. He had 14 rebounds and an NCAA title game record 10 blocked shots in that contest but it was not quite enough as Kentucky proved to be too powerful for the underdog USC squad.

Smith holds the PCC South record for blocked shots in a season with 152 this past year. He has the potential to be a dominant defensive presence in the NBA.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL NOTES
IT COULD BE A LONG YEAR FOR KENTUCKY
Every season college basketball teams must face the loss of a graduating player or two but few teams will have a tougher adjustment than the National Champion Kentucky Wildcats. Four of the Wildcats five starters and a key reserve have all graduated. In all 6 players are gone including potential NBA first round draft picks Cliff *Baker, Paul *Noel and Jack *Rocker. The others leaving are leading scorer Kenny Chilchote and backup forward Larry Hatthawy along with reserve center Dustan Stanback who have all used up their eligibility.

In there place the Wildcats will add a decent but not outstanding recruiting class. The newcomers include Kevin Warpool, 6'7" center from Atlanta who will likely see substantial minutes early because of the lack of big men on the roster. Point Guard, Dale *Barnstable likely will be the top recruit out of this class. Other newcomers include SG Walt xSmith from nearby Harlan, Kentucky, Adrin Coulter a PG from Royal Oak, Michigan and forwards Jarod Levick from Chicago an Anthony Jeansonne from Buena Vista, Colorado.

There is still some talent in Kentucky but just qualifying for the NCAA's rather than winning it all should be the goal this season.

CAN HEBERT MAKE IT THREE IN A ROW?
The Phoenix Open gets underway today and the big question on everyone's mind is can Jay Hebert win a third tournament in a row. The youngster is coming off back to back wins at New Orleans and Dallas and will look to make it three in a row with a win at the Phoenix Country Club.

One of the oldest events on the tour, the Phoenix Country Club in the heart of the city, has played host to the event since it's inception in 1932. Ben Hogan is the defending champ after winning in a playoff last year. Here are the previous winners of the event.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PHILS LOSE SWIFT FOR AT LEAST TWO MONTHS
Veteran Philadelphia Phillies starter Bill Swift was lost to the club for at least 2 months after suffering a serious injury to his throwing arm in the Phillies 6-5 loss in Pittsburgh yesterday.

"I heard something pop and I knew immediately it was bad," said the 40 year old Swift afterwards. The injury was diagnosed as a ruptured bicep and there is some concern his career may be over. "Let's face it. At my age this might be tough to come back from," sighed Swift. "At least I know what it takes and maybe that will help."

Swift suffered a similiar injury in 1939 and was pitching again 5 weeks later. However, this time it does appear to be more serious. The dissappointing part for Swift is he was pitching so well, coming off of back to back 4-hit complete games.

The Bill Swift story is an interesting one. He began his career with the Pirates before being traded to the Giants for a rookie pitcher by the name of Cliff Melton. New Yorkers never really accepted him despite three 20-win seasons as they kept looking at what Melton accomplished in Pittsburgh. After nearly 6 years at the Polo Grounds he was dealt to the Phillies for pitcher Phil Gallivan in one of the most lobsided deals in league history. Gallivan would go 4-18 in two seasons with the Giants before retiring while Swift has 57 wins and still going strong for Philadelphia. It just seems funny the Giants were bested in both their deals with Swift - giving up a 4-time Cy Young winner to be for him and then 6 years later dealing him for pitcher with a career record of 26-51.

As for Swift the injury likely puts an end to the slim hopes he could become the 19th member of the 300 win club. Below are the pitchers with 300 career victories and also Bill Swift's career numbers.

NATIONAL LEAGUE RECAPS
Dick Siebert's 2-run single in the bottom of the 8th inning led the Pirates past the Phillies. Pirates pitcher Jim Tobin pitched 8 innings for the win to improve to 4-1. Tobin aided his own cause with 2 hits and a pair of rbi's. Orval Grove took the loss in relief of Bill Swift who, as mentioned above, was injured in the game.

Del Rice singled in Stan Musial with the winning run in the top of the 13th inning as St Louis edged Cincinnati 7-6. Musial hit his fifth homer of the season and scored three times in the game.

Bill Nicholson's 2-run homer in the 7th proved the difference as Chicago beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 3-1 at Ebbetts Field. Cubs pitcher Paul Erickson pitched a complete game 6-hitter to improve his record to 2-3.

In Boston, Earl Torgeson and Chet Ross homered to lead the Braves past New York 7-4. Second year pitcher Warren Spahn went 8 innings for Boston to even his record at 3-3.

BREAK UP THE RED SOX - BOSTON WINS 4TH IN A ROW
Shortstop Johnny Hudson hit a 3-run homer with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Boston Red Sox a 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. It was Boston's fourth straight victory after starting the season 3-15.

In other American League action, Ival Goodman's 3rd rbi of the game - a single with two out in the bottom of the ninth scored Charlie English with the winning run as Cleveland beat Philadelphia 6-5. The Indians scored three times in the 9th off the Philadelphia bullpen, ruining a solid performance from A's starter Ray Scarborough who allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 8 innings. Claude Passeau went the distance for the Tribe to improve to 2-1 on the year.

In Washingtonm, Max Lanier pitched a 6-hit shutout as the Yankees blanked the Sens 3-0. Aaron Robinson's 2-run double in the 6th inning keyed the Yankees offense. Dixie Walker had an rbi single to score the final run - for Walker it was the 4th game in a row he had at least one rbi.

Ninth inning rbi's from Nig Lipscomb and Wally Judnich gave the Browns a 6-5 win over visiting Detroit. Archie McKain went the distance for St Louis to run his record to 4-1. Ellis Kinder took the loss in relief of Virgil Trucks.

RASCHI TO MAKE MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT
Replacing a legend always comes with great pressure but it is even more so when it is your first major league start. That will be what rookie Pirates righthander Vic Raschi will face today when he takes the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies. Raschi, a second round pick of the Bucs over the winter will make his major league debut in place of injured 4-time Cy Young Award winner Cliff Melton. The 28 year old was 2-1 with a 3.00 era for AAA Indianapolis at the time of his promotion. Raschi had fanned 24 batters in 27 innings work.

NBA DRAFT PRIMER - RAY *LUMPP MARYLAND
In the latest of a series of previews on potential first round picks in next month's NBA draft we take a look at Maryland SG Ray *Lumpp. The junior elected to leave school early after finishing his college career with a most impressive tournament run - beginning as a 15 seed in the East and helping lead Maryland all the way to the regional final before falling to top seed Holy Cross.

Lumpp still needs some polish to refine his game but scouts are projecting him as a possible top five pick.

VETERAN FORWARD COLE LARSON RETIRES
Cole Larson has decided to call it quits after a 13 year NBA career. The power forward was originally drafted out of Georgia Tech by Buffalo with the 14th pick of the first round in the 1934 college draft. His best seasons would be the Braves when the league was in it's infancy. He made the allstar game his rookie season and was named 2nd team all-defensive player in 1936-37. As the league evolved and the quality of play got better his size became a real detriment. At 6'5" he lacked the size to be a dominant rebounder and his shooting skills were not enough to keep him as an everyday player.

Larson would move to Baltimore in 1938 and on to Syracuse before winding up his career this past season as a backup on the woeful Celtics squad. He won an NBA championship with the Bullets in 1940-41 and scored 11 points in the championship clinching victory.

In his senior year at Georgia Tech, the Winter Springs, Florida native was named to the All-ACC team and led the nation in rebounds with 15.7 per game.

TITANS SIGN VETERAN FULLBACK BERRY
Bruce Berry, who spent the past two seasons as the starting fullback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has agreed to a 1 year deal with the Tennessee Titans. Primarily a blocking back Berry carried the ball 22 times for 40 yards last season. Before joining the Chiegs he spent 4 seasons with the Chicago Bears, who drafted him out of Notre Dame in the 6th round of the 1941 draft. Berry will battle last year's starter Mitch Adams for the number one job in Tennessee.

The Chiefs did not resign Berry after they picked up fullback Ted Turntine from Pittsburgh.

In other free agent news New England has decided to bring in some competition for kicker Brenna Armstead. Armstead received much of the blame for the Pats playoff loss to Cleveland last season. He missed a pair of third quarter field goal attempts in what ended up being a 24-20 loss to the Browns. The Pats decided to give free agent kicker Rick Wells a chance to take Armstead's job. Wells has been to camps with the Broncos, Lions and Redskins but has yet to kick in a regular season NFL game.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
RED SOX WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT - BLANK YANKS 2-0
Entering the game with a 1.52 ERA but an 0-2 record, you can't blame Boston starter Earl Johnson for not expecting much run support from his mates. Johnson took things into his own hands and notched his first victory of the season by throwing a 5-hit shutout as the Red Sox stretched their winning streak to 5 games with a 2-0 victory.

Johnson against Yankees starter Tiny Bonham had all the makings of a pitchers duel and while Johnson certainly did his part, Bonham did not dissappoint either. The Yankee starter allowed just 4 hits in the game. The first was an opening inning triple from Mel Almeda that was turned into a run by a Babe Young sacrifice fly. The final Boston run also came on a sac fly.

St Louis was also the site of a low scoring game as Philadelphia topped the Browns 2-0. Both A's runs came on rbi triples from Irv Hall and Ed Busch. Philadelphia managed 6 hits off of losing pitcher Sam Zoldak while winning pitcher Fred Caligiuri and two relievers combined on a 4-hitter.

A 4-run 4th inning highlighted by a 2-run double from Barney McCosky was enough for Detroit to trim Cleveland 4-3 while in Washington visiting Chicago broke out of a slump in a big way, blasting the Sens 13-4. Frank Demaree had 5 hits and 4 rbi's for the White Sox while Tom Hafey drove in 5 runs as the club halted a 9 game losing streak.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT LEADS REDS PAST CARDS
St Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Al Jurisch pitched 8 innings of shutout ball allowing just 2 hits but his Cincinnati counterpart Arnold Carter was just as good as the game was scoreless entering the 9th. Carter set down the Cards in order but Jurisch issued a walk to Grady Hatton and two batters later Jimmy Ripple deposited a fastball into the leftfield bleachers to give the Reds a 2-0 victory.

There was late inning drama in Boston as well as the New York Giants plated 4 in the top of the ninth to beat the Braves 6-2. Vince Dimaggio had 4 rbi's to pace the winners while Adrian Zabala went 8 innings for the victory in just his second ever major league start.

It wasn't pretty but rookie Vic Raschi won his major league debut. Raschi allowed 7 runs in 8 innings but just 3 were earned as the Pirates to Philadelphia 10-7. Alex Carrasquel earned his major league leading 6th save in the game. Phillies starter Vic Lombardi lasted just 3 innings but errors hurt his cause. The Phillies made 3 miscues while the Pirates committed 4 errors in the game.

In Brooklyn, Don Black finally got his first win of the season as the Dodgers topped Chicago 6-2. Black, who has a 2.19 era, lost his first three decision when Brooklyn scored a total of 1 run in the 3 games. Frank McCormick delivered a 3-run homer to lead Brooklyn on this day while Black aided his own cause with a 2-run single.

ROMERO STUNS GAGNON IN BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE BOUT
Luis Romero shocked a sold out Montreal Forum crowd with a devastating cross that caught World Bantamweight Champion Fernando Gagnon flush and sent him to the canvas in the 11th round. Gagnon was unable to regain his feet before being counted out making the Spainard Romero the new World Bantamweight Champ. For Johnson, a converted reliever, it was just the 10th win of his 8 year career and the first complete game.

Up to that point Gagnon had been in complete control of the fight, flooring Romero once in the sixth round and twice in the seventh. Despite being totally dominated on the scorecards Romero refused to give up and was rewarded, catching Gagnon by surprise to silence a defeaning crowd and put the champ on his back.

Romero improves to 21-6-1 with the victory while Gagnon falls to 32-4-1. Romero will likely give up his European belt which will create a 4 man elimination to determine the new champion of Europe.

On the undercard Earl Walls successfully defended his Canadian Heavyweight title with a 10th round TKO of Al Delaney. The Windsor, Ontario native was in complete control of the bout and had Delaney on the canvas on three occassions. Jack Armstrong of Toronto won the vacant Canadian Featherweight title by mopping the floor with Montreal's Hubert Gagnier. Gagnier landed maybe a dozen scoring punches in the 10 round bout while Armstrong just pummelled him. Gagnier was down 4 times in the bout and recovered each time except for the final one.

PGA TOUR : PHOENIX OPEN
HOGAN SETS TOURNAMENT RECORD WITH A 63
Ben Hogan set a new record for the Phoenix Open by shooting an 8 under par 63. That performance moved him within a stroke of leader Doug Ford. Ford, who was the co-leader after Thursday's round, took sole possession of the lead with a 3 under 68 on Friday. However, all the talk centered on Hogan who surpassed the old tournament mark of 64 set by both Vic Ghezzi and Dutch Harrison last year.

Yesterday's other two co-leaders both slipped but will easily make the cut. Antonio Cerda of Argentina shot one over par while former Pepperdine student Scott xTibbetts carded a 73 to remain the low amateur. One other amateur also made the cut: Ed xWhite from Iola, Kansas shot 2 over par which was the cutoff number.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - RAY *ELLEFSON IOWA
The only junior on the 1946-47 first team All-American roster, Ray *Ellefson decided to pass up his final year of eligibility with the Iowa Hawkeyes and turn pro. Ellefson finished fourth in the nation in rebounds per game and seventh in blocked shots. In each of the past two seasons he made the All Big 10 team after being named to the conference all-frosh team his first season.

His game has been compared to USC's Joseph Smith (who was previewed in Thursday's edition) but Ellefson has much more offensive upside.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL RECRUITING CLASSES
UNFINISHED BUSINESS FOR NYU
A season ending injury to star center Dolph *Schayes in the conference tournament derailed what were high hopes for New York University in the NCAA's. The Violets, a top 5 team virtually all season and a number 2 seed in the NCAA tournament, were upset 70-69 by 15 seed Boston University in the opening round of the NCAA's. The loss of Schayes proved too much to overcome but it left the returning members of the squad feeling they have some unfinished business.

If Schayes is fully recovered from his broken wrist NYU could become the team to beat as only one starter is gone from last year's club. Sophomore Kevin *O'Shea should be able to step up and fill the void at PG left by Andrew Rogers graduation. The rest of the key contributers are all back and while this recruiting class was not as strong as what NYU landed the past two seasons, the Violets did get a pair of talented players in PF Abraham *Becker and PG JJ xTurner.

SOME BACKGROUND ON THE NYU roster
The players with * are all named after real players. I know little about Becker aside from the fact he is in the NYU hall of fame. Schayes I am sure you have heard of - he was a hall of famer with the Syracuse Nationals. Earl Lloyd went to West Virginia State in real life and played 9 NBA seasons, most with Schayes in Syracuse. Slater Martin is another NBA hall of famer who played 11 seasons after leaving the University of Texas. Btw, landing both Schayes and Martin made the NYU recruiting class 2 years ago one of the best all time in my replay. O'Shea in real life attended Notre Dame and played 3 seasons in the NBA. All I know about Joe Kaufman in real life is he attended NYU and was drafted by Philadelphia in the 9th round of the 1950 BAA draft but never played pro basketball.

JJ Turner is a board member created player from Khucke.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
ROE 4-HITS GIANTS TO IMPROVE TO 6-0
One of the best stories in baseball this young season is the sudden emergence of Pirates starter Preacher Roe as a dominating pitcher. After going 27-29 over his first two seasons with the Bucs, Roe has put it all together this year. He improved his record to 6-0 and lowered his era to 2.18 with an 8 inning 4-hit performance against the New York Giants. Reliever Ed Bahr pitched a 1-2-3 9th to preserve the 6-1 Pittsburgh victory.

In other National League action Bill Nicholson homered and drove in 3 runs as Chicago beat the Reds 6-2 in Cincinnati. Vern Olsen got the win for the Cubs to run his record to 5-2.

Enos Slaughter drove in a pair of runs as St Louis trimmed Brooklyn 5-4, handind Dodgers starter Mickey Haefner his 5th straight defeat in the process.

36 year old Bob Brown pitched 8 shutout innings in his first start of the season to lead Boston past Philadelphia 7-2. Bama Rowell hit a 3-run homer for the Braves, who handed Charley Schanz his second straight loss after Schanz started the season 5-0.

RED SOX WIN AGAIN - OUT OF LAST PLACE
The Boston Red Sox spotted the New York Yankees 5 runs in the top of the first only to battle back and beat the Yanks 9-6 for their sixth straight win. The victory moves the Red Sox out of last place in the American League. Dizzy Dean suffered his first loss of the season - a 5 run Boston outburst in the 5th inning did him in. Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky and Babe Young each drove in 2 runs to lead the Red Sox who are out of last place for the first time this season.

Vern Stephens 2-run double in the 6th snapped a tie and gave St Louis a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics.

Danny Litwhiler and Frank Demaree each had 3 hits as Chicago beat Washington for the second day in a row, 6-2 was the final score.

In Cleveland, Indians hurler Bill Lohrman improved his record to 6-0 as the Tribe dumped Detroit 7-1.

BILL HOLLAND CLAIMS THE POLE AT INDY
Indy rookie Bill Holland has claimed the pole for the thirty-first running of the Indianapolis 500. His pace setting time was 126.604 mph. Most were surprised that Holland and not veteran teammate Mauri Rose had the quicker time of the two Blue Crown Spark Plug team drivers. Rose finished a dissappointing 15th and out of the 12 guarranteed spots announced Saturday.

Here are the top 12 :

1- Bill Holland - first Indy 500
2- Joie Chitwood - 4th race, best finish 5th last year
3- Shorty Cantlon - 11th race best finish 2nd, in real life died in 1947 Indy 500
4- Paul Russo - 4th race, best finish 9th
5- Rex Mays - 10th race, best finish 2nd (twice)
6- Ken Fowler - 2nd race, best finish 19th in 1937
7- Freddie Agabashian - first Indy 500
8- Henry Banks - 3rd race, best finish 21st
9- Tony Bettenhausen Sr. - 2nd race, finished 20th last year
10- Mel Hansen - 5th race, best finish 8th in 1940
11- Herb Ardinger - 6th race, best finish 6th in 1938
12- Al Miller - 11th race, best finish 6th in 1934

PGA TOUR - PHOENIX OPEN
FORD AND HAMILTON SHARE LEAD AT PHOENIX OPEN
New Haven's Doug Ford has had a share of the lead in each of the first three rounds of the Phoenix Open. After Saturday's action Ford is tied with Bob Hamilton at 8 under par, 2 strokes ahead of three golfers including Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson.

After two mediocre rounds by his standards, Sam Snead gave himself an outside chance at victory by shooting the best round of the day Saturday, a 6 under par 65. Snead is 4 under for the tournament.

The two amateurs that made the cut are deadlocked at 2 under par. Scott xTibbetts had a share of the lead Thursday when he shot a 66 but has not broken par in the two days since. Ed xWhite followed up a terrible opening round with back to back 67's.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - FOUR KENTUCKY STARS LOOK TO NBA
National Collegiate Champion Kentucky's loss is the NBA's gain. Three and possibly four members of the Wildcats team could be selected in the June NBA draft. Center Jack *Rocker is an almost certain top 10 pick. Small forward Paul *Noel should also go in the first round while guard Cliff *Barker and PF/C Kenny Chilchote could both be selected in the second round.

In what has to go down as one of the greatest recruiting class in college basketball history, Kentucky got Rocker, Noel and Chilchote in 1943. Barker was added as an junior college transfer in 1945 and the four of them carved out an impressive resume at Kentucky: back to back appearances in the NCAA title game including winning it all this past season and going 73-6 over the past two seasons.

Jack *Rocker is probably the best all-round center available in the draft and it would not be a stretch to see him go first overall. He is Kentucky's all-time leader in career points, rebounds and blocked shots.

In real life Rocker went to the University of California and played just 9 career NBA games, all with Philadelphia in 1948.

Paul *Noel is a smooth shooter who rebounds well enough to play power forward. He is a liekly top 10 pick. In real life the native of Midway, Kentucky played 20 games for the Wildcats in 1942 before enlisting. He would play 5 seasons in the NBA with New York and Rochester.

Cliff *Barker was the key to bring Kentucky's talented big men together. A smooth quarterback of the Wildcat offense, the former junior college star instantly clicked with his new mates and Kentucky won 73 of the 79 games he started. The MVP of the NCAA tournament this season, there is a chance Baker will sneak into the first round of the draft.

In real life Barker played 3 seasons for Kentucky and was second team All-SEC in both his junior and senior years. He was also a member of the USA 1948 gold medal winning olympic basketball team before playing 3 seasons in the NBA.

Kenny Chilchote seemed destined for NBA stardom from the day he first stepped on the court at Kentucky from Hoover High School in Des Moines, Iowa. He scored 23 points in his first college game but 3 games later tore up his knee and missed three months. Chilchote recovered from the knee injury and in his junior year was named the SEC's most valuable player. Injury struck again his senior season forcing him to miss 13 games with an injury to the same knee. He came back and looked very good as the regular season wound down but word is he reinjured the knee in the NCAA's and that is why he averaged just 7 points a game in the final 3 tournament contests. Teams will look very closely at that knee so don't be surprised if the can't miss college freshman becomes an undrafted NBA free agent.

Chilchote is a fictional player created by TDCB.

thanks. I will consider the formula one at some point. Can you send me the link to the formula one game?

What I really am hoping to see someday soon is a hockey game similiar to OOTP or TPB2005 that allows me to customize league size and teams. A close second on my wish list is a college football game that feeds players directly to TPF but with .400 software basically gone I dont expect a game compatiable with TPF would be high on Grey Dog's priorities.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
RED SOX LOSE GAME AND PITCHER BOB BOWMAN
Boston starting pitcher Bob Bowman will be sidelined for close to two months after suffering an arm injury in the Red Sox 6-0 loss to the New York Yankees. The 4-hit shutout tossed by 40 year old Jumbo Brown allowed the Yanks to salvage one game from their 3 game set in Beantown.

With the injury to Bowman the Red Sox recalled pitcher Rube Melton from AAA. Melton had been sent down a few days earlier after struggling terribly in the Sox bullpen. With the injury to Bowman, Melton will go in the starting rotation where he spent most of his 6 previous big league seasons.

In other American League action Steve Gromek improved to 5-0 as Cleveland topped Detroit 8-5. Catcher Clyde Kluttz had 4 hits and 3 rbi's to lead the Cleveland attack.

In St Louis Cookie Lavagetto and Frank Mancuso each drove in 3 runs as the Browns blasted Philadelphia 10-2 while in Washington, Red Barrett and a pair of relievers combined to 4-hit Chicago in a 4-3 Senators victory.

12 RUN 7TH LEADS PIRATES PAST GIANTS
Tony Cuccinello drove in 5 runs in one inning and Bob Elliott hit a 3-run homer the same inning as Pittsburgh scored 12 runs and sent 16 men to the plate in the 7th inning of a 16-7 win over the visiting New York Giants. This came after the Giants had scored 6 times in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.

The other three National League games all ended up in a 7-1 score. Ed Head pitched a complete game as the Cubs won in Cincinnati. Stan Ferens won his first game in nearly a year as the Cards decked the Dodgers and Boston beat Philadelphia 7-1 despite getting only 5 hits.

DODGERS RELEASE FORMER ALLSTAR BONURA
38 year old first baseman Zeke Bonura, who made the National League allstar team last year, has been released by the Brooklyn Dodgers after a dreadful start to the season. The 14 year veteran was hitting just .156 through his first dozen games this season so the Dodgers sent him to AAA Montreal. After going 1-for-14 during his week in AAA Brooklyn management had seen enough and released Bonura.

Bonura had that greatest major league debut of any player in history. In his first pro game, the season opener in 1934 he homered and drove in 7 runs in a 10-9 Chicago win over Washington. His total career with the White Sox lasted just 7 games before he was dealt to Cincinnati for pitcher Roy Meeker. Bonura would hit .282 that season and be named the National League rookie of the year. He would make 2 allstar game appearances in his 9 and a half years in Cincinnati before the Reds dealt him to Brooklyn for SS Pete Coscarart in July of 1943. He made his third allstar team last year but slumped terribly in the second half of the season.

NEWSOME AND ROE WIN PLAYER OF WEEK AWARDS
Philadelphia Athletics shortstop Skeeter Newsome was named the American League player of the week for the first time in his 13 year career. Newsome hit .500 in 20 at bats last week and drove in 6 runs. On the season he is hitting .287 with no homers and 9 rbi's.

For the second week in a row the National League's top performer was a Pittsburgh Pirate. This time the player of the week honour goes to pitcher Preacher Roe who was 2-0 with a 1.06 era last week. On the season Roe is a perfect 5-0. Last week the award went to Roe's teammate Bob Elliott.

PGA TOUR - PHOENIX OPEN
LOCKE COMES OUT OF NOWHERE TO WIN PHOENIX OPEN
South African Bobby Locke made up 7 strokes on the final day to win the Phoenix Open. Locke shot a 7 under par 64 to finish one stroke ahead of Ben Hogan and amateur Scott xTibbetts.

Locke birdied four holes on the back nine and that had to sit around to wait for Saturday's co-leaders Doug Ford and Bob Hamilton to finish. Hamilton self destructed on the front nine, shooting 4 over but when he birdied 12 and 13 he was witing 2 strokes off Locke. However, he could manage just even par the rest of the way. Ford, who led each of the previous 3 days was 4 over after the first three holes Sunday and could never recover. Ben Hogan also had a shot at the victory but a double bogey on the par-4 15th doomed him to second.

The biggest surprise of the tournament was the play of 21 year old Scott xTibbetts. The amateur, who just graduated from Pepperdine a month ago, was the co-leader with a 66 on Thursday. He was a combined 3 over par in Friday and Saturday's rounds before finishing strong with another 66 on Sunday. Tibbetts birdied both 17 and 18 to move up to the tie for second place. The performance will likely guarantee his spot in all of the non-major events the rest of the season and he has to be considered a favourite for the US Amateur.

It is Locke's first title of the season. A scratch golfer as a teenager, Locke choose to enter the mining industry in his native South Africa rather than turn professional. However, when his employer sent him to Britian on business in 1936, Locke entered the British Open. He won the Amateur Medal and turned professional two years later.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - MISSOURI'S MIKE PANKEMAN
Missouri has only had one player selected in the NBA draft since the league was formed in 1932. Center Albert Grove was the first Tiger to be drafted, going in the second round to Indianapolis in 1933. Now another center, by the name of Mike Pankeman may double the number of former Missouri hoopsters to get drafted.
Pankeman has two things going against him. First this is a pretty deep draft for centers led by Kentucky's Jack *Rocker and Ray *Ellefson of Iowa. Other centers to watch include Holy Cross pivot Bob *Hubbard, Gary Taylor from Seton Hall, Arnie *Risen of Ohio State and Anthony Anderson of Western Kentucky. Pankeman likely fits a notch below each of those meaning if he does get selected it will likely be in the second round.

The second thing going against Pankeman is his size. At 6'6" he is just too small to play center in the NBA. He may have more of a future at forward in the NBA.

As for how the other Missouri alum fared in the NBA. Grove had an 11 year career but was a bench player for 8 of those seasons.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL OFFSEASON NOTES
WOLVERINES STILL REBUILDING
Unlike the University of Michigan football team, the Wolverine hoopsters have had very little success to enjoy. From 1933-40 Michigan made 5 appearances in the NCAA tournament but last season extended their streak of missing the NCAA's to 7 years. With three starters back including Big 10 freshman of the year PF Don *Rehfeldt this may be the year Michigan ends that streak. However, they will have their work cut out for them. After a pair of 18-13 seasons Michigan slumped to 9-19 a year ago.

Leading scorer SG Al *Cervi and center Malcom *McMullan, who led the team in rebounds are the other two returning starters. *Rehfeldt may shift to the small forward spot allowing sophomore Daryll Brough to play PF. The big question mark is shooting guard where there is no replacement for the now graduated Max Heim. The choice likely comes down to freshamn Zila Gordon or Cervi moves to the point and another freshman by the name of Michael Scott steps in as the SG.

JET PILOT LOOKS TO CLAIM SECOND LEG OF TRIPLE CROWN
As expected Kentucky Derby winner Jet Pilot has been confirmed to participate in Saturday's running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Track near Baltimore. It looks like the entire field from the Derby will compete including favourite Phalanx, who will likely be the favourite again this weekend.

BOXING NEWS
MINI-TOURNAMENT SET TO DETERMINE NEW EUROPEAN BANTAMWEIGHT KING
As expected Spain's Luis Romero has stepped down as the European Bantamweight Champion after he won the world title by stopping Fernando Gagnon last week. To declare a new European champ, the four top rated contenders will stage a playoff. The 4 contenders are Benny Goldberg of Poland, Guido Ferracin of Italy, British champion Gus Foran and Johnny King of Britian.

The semi-final will be contested in Munich, Germany on May 26 with the final being set for the first or second week of July likely in Paris. By random draw it has been decided that Golberg will face King while Foran will meet Ferracin in the semi-final.

Goldberg is just coming off of a victory over Gus Foran in a non-title fight. Originally from Warsaw but now based in Detroit, Goldberg is 2-0 in post war action.

King is 35-6 and has previously fought all 3 of the other semi-finalists. He lost to Foran in the postwar British title fight and lost to Goldberg by majority decision in January. Two months ago King won a unanimous decision over Ferracin.

As mentioned above, Liverpool native Foran beat King but lost to Goldberg. He is 24-6.

Ferracin, from Rovigo Italy, had a European title shot against Romero but lost by 9th round KO. He also lost to King on a decision in January to fall to 27-6-2.

The undercard will also be used to try and rekindle some post war interest in German boxers. Two highly touted 20 year old will each fight. Heavyweight Jurgen xHucke, nicknamed Young Max presumably because of a style compared to Max Schmeling, will taken on Italian Gino Buonvino. Lightheavyweight Rudel xDietrich will fight a Spanish punching bag by the name of Paco Bueno. Neither are quality opponents for the two Germans. Bueno is 8-21-5 in his career while Buonvino 5-19-2.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PIRATES KEEP ON WINNING
Arky Vaughan had 4 rbi's and Jim Tobin tossed a 6-hit complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates blasted the visiting New York Giants 9-1 to improve their major league leading record to 21-7. The key to Pittsburgh success so far has been the offense : a .308 team batting average is .037 better than the second best team in all of baseball; and with 192 runs the Pirates have scored 52 more than the number 2 team in the majors.

The majority of the offense comes from 3-4-5 hitters Bob Elliott (.396,6,31), Arky Vaughan (.327,5,30) and second year man Ralph Kiner (.337,3,24). However second baseman Tony Cuccinello (.284,2,23) and catcher Bill Salkeld (.262,2,14) have also got into the act of late. The starting rotation of Preacher Roe (6-0, 2.18), Jim Tobin (5-1, 3.73), Ken Heintzelman (3-2, 6.33) and Vic Raschi (1-0, 3.38) has been solid even with Cy Young winner Cliff Melton (3-1, 3.07) sidelined.

St Louis managed to stay with 3 and a half games of the Pirates by blanking Brooklyn 5-0 on a 5-hitter from Ernie White and reliever Joe Coleman. Whitey Kurowski homered and Ben Chapman had a pair of rbi's for the Cards who completed a 3-game sweep of the Dodgers.

After 6 seasons as a reliever Max Macon won in his first major league starting assignment, allowing 3 runs in 7 innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat Boston 7-3. Macon held the Braves off the scoresheet until getting into trouble to begin the 7th.

Johnny Mize drove in 3 runs and Harry Feldman pitched a complete game as Cincinnati crushed Chicago 9-1.

In the American League rbi doubles from Johnny Hudson and Tommy Holmes in the bottom of the 8th inning lifted Boston past Detroit 5-4. The New York Yankees dropped first place Cleveland 9-1 behind a solid effort from pitcher Max Lanier. Ray Scarborough tossed a 5-hitter as last place Philadelphia beat Washington 5-3 while in St Louis, homers from Tom Hafey and Harry Danning led visiting Chicago past the Browns 8-6.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - FLORIDA'S RAY *CORLEY
From National Freshman of the Year to benchwarmer as a sophomore. Which is the real Ray *Corely? After averaging nearly 12 points and 9 assists as a freshman at the University of Florida, Corely spent most of last year sulking on the bench? Why is anyone's guess. Just like he did all last season, Corely is still not talking to the media about it and all the University of Florida would ever say was it was an internal issue. There is no question Corely has the talent to play at the NBA level but does he have the attitude? That will be up to NBA teams to decide next month. Odds are one team in the first round will decide his talent is too much to pass up and Corely will go in round one.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL OFFSEASON NOTES
RICH TRADITION OF DEVELOPING PRO PLAYERS AT FLORIDA
The University of Florida has a couple of final four appearances to it's credit but the Gators are better known for developing top quality NBA talent than winning anything.

Certainly number one on everyone's list of Florida products is NBA superstar Cameron Belli but in all Florida has produced 15 NBA draft picks including first rounders Belli, Akins Adkisson, Dave Askew, Daniel Swanson, Daniel Knall, Breece Kutchin, Bruce Phillips, Billy *Hassett, Michael Gonzales, Chris Shover and 5 second round picks. The Gators are the only team to have two players selected first overall: Belli in 1934 and Knall in 1942.

Still with all of that talent you would expect the Gators to have more than three SEC tournament title banners hanging from the rafters. The banners themselves are getting dusty as the newest one was hoisted a decade ago.

Last season there was positive news like a 22-9 record and a run to the SEC tournament final before losing to national champion Kentucky, but the year ended on a sour note when the fourth seeded Gators were upset by Texas A&M in the opening round of the NCAA's.

Things look bright this year with all of the starters back and only substitute PF Dylan Loper and sophomore PG Roy *Corley gone. The backcourt will again feature Tyson Edwards and SEC freshman of the year Shaun Fluellen. Upfront there is Bill *Closs and Ward *Gibson along with recruit Harry *Hamilton who may be the best freshman player in the nation. With this looking like a down year for Kentucky this just might be the year Florida gets a fourth SEC title banner.

Ward Gibson attended Creighton before playing briefly in the National Professional Basketball League. Bob Hahn attended NC State before playing 10 games with Chicago of the NBA in 1950. Bill Closs went to Rice before playing 3 seasons in the NBA in the early fifties.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
YANKS CLOSE TO WITHIN GAME AND A HALF OF TRIBE
Cleveland Indians pitcher Johnny Babich tossed a complete game 2-hitter - and lost. Babich gave up a bloop single to Snuffy Stirnweiss in the top of the sixth that scored the first run of the game and a solo homer to Aaron Robinson in the 8th that gave New York a 2-1 victory over the Indians. The only Indians run came in the bottom of the 7th on a sacrifice fly. Tiny Bonham allowed just 7 Cleveland hits while Jimmy Deshong came on in relief to get the final two outs for his first save of the season.

The Yankee win moves New York to within a game and a half of the first place Indians atop the American League standings.

In other action: Chet Laabs homered and drove in 3 runs as Philadelphia waxed Washington 12-1. Mel Almada and Stan Spence each had 3 hits to lead the Boston Red Sox past Detroit 6-5 while in St Louis the Browns dropped Chicago 8-3.

ZABALA BAFFLES BUCS
Where did this guy come from? After 3 seasons spent mainly in the minors and exclusively in relief, New York Giants pitcher Adrian Zabala is making the most of his opportunity to be a starter. Zabala pitched 7 shutout innings as the lowly Giants blanked powerful Pittsburgh 2-0. In three starts the 30 year old is 2-1 with a 1.13 era. Johnny Rucker had 3 hits and scored the winning run to lead the Giants offense.

The Philadelphia Phillies won a wild one in Boston 13-7. The Braves tied the game at 5 when PH Vance Dinges hit a solo homer with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth but that was just the start of the drama. In the top of the 10th another pinch-hitter, Bobby Estalella hit a 2-run shot to put the Phillies ahead but an Earl Torgeson double in the bottom of the inning scored two tie once again tie the game. Philadelphia would put it away with 4 runs in the top of 11th and there was no Boston comeback this time as Orval Grove retired the Braves in order.

There were late inning heroics in Brooklyn as well. Despite having two men retired at the plate on throws from Cardinals OF Frankie Baumholz, Brooklyn scored 3 times in the bottom of the nith to tie the Cardinals at 5. The Dodgers then won the game in the bottom of the 10th on a sac fly from PH Red Nonnenkamp.

In Cincinnati, Grady Hatton's 3 run homer led the Reds past Chicago 5-2.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - SETON HALL'S GARY TAYLOR
Despite, or perhaps because of a back injury suffered in Seton Hall's final NCAA tournament game of the season, junior center Gary Taylor has decided to skip his senior year and enter the NBA draft. For his part Taylor says the injury had no bearing either way on his decision, he simply felt it was time to take his game to the pro ranks.

Taylor spent 3 seasons as the starting center for the Pirates and improved his game in each of those years. He led Seton Hall to two straight Big East tournament titles and was named to the conference allstar team this year.

There is plenty of competition at center in this year's draft but as long as his back is sound Taylor should hear his name called by the middle of the first round.

I love the way it is now Tiger Fan, but I have no qualms with you moving faster.

I love the newspaper format, which gives the day to day detail that much more oomph. I know what you mean about moving into modern times, especially that the games you have don't accommodate for your time period. It works though, you've done a great job working it all in.

Your decision is ultimate, and I know whatever you decide will turn out fantastic. I know my analysis doesn't really help, but hey, this is one of my favorites and I know your going to do a great job with it.

thanks for the feedback Vris. I moved it into a poll so it did not get lost in the day to day recaps.

Your answer about sums up my thoughts. I love the day to day stuff but at the same time I want to see what happens with Otto Graham in Tampa, I want to see if Cousy can lead Holy Cross to an NCAA title and then dominate the NBA, what kind of career numbers Howe will put up in the NHL, will top draft picks Art Houtteman and Earl Torgeson become mlb stars. Futher down the road it will be great to see Cassius Clay enter the ring, and Johnny Unitias turn pro and Mantle and Mays and Orr and Chamberlain.

At my current pace I will likely never get there, but is that so bad? This is the first day to day historical sim I have done (the HOB's have always been quick sim the year) and the amount of detail I can focus on is incredible. Stuff that would go unnoticed in a quick sim. Chiefs QB Ulish Groce would never have been mentioned. John Layton, 3 time SWC player of the year was unnoticed while quick simming up to 1947 in college hoops, but now with the day to day aspect I can tell his story and watch his career unfold. Every Joe Louis title fight now has great anticipation for me as I build up to it. Golf gives me great stories like board member created Scott *Tibbetts improbbale performance at Phoenix.

I just can't decide.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
SEVEN IN A ROE
Preacher Roe continues to baffle National League batters as he improved his record to 7-0 by leading the Pittsburgh Pirates past St Louis 3-2 at Forbes Field. Roe had allowed just 3 hits before Ben Chapman doubled to lead off the top of the ninth inning. Alex Carrasquel came on to replace Roe and, while Chapman did eventually score, he preserved the Pirates win and earned his 7th save of the season in the process. Two of Pittsburgh's runs came on a bases-loaded single from first baseman Bill Nagel in the 6th and the final one came on doubles from Ralph Kiner and Tony Cuccinello in the 8th. George Dockins took the loss to even his record at 4-4. At 22-8 the Pirates have a 4.5 game lead on second place St Louis in the National League.

Ron Northey had a career day for the Phillies in Cincinnati. The reserve outfielder, making his first start of the season, homered and drove in a career high 7 runs as the Phillies rocked the Reds 12-2. Northey was 3 rbi's shy of the National League single game mark of 10 set by Chick Hafey of St Louis in 1930 and equalled by Joe Dimaggio of the Reds in 1941. Northey hit a grand slam in the first inning, an rbi single in the second and a 2-run double in the sixth.

Tony Giuliani also had the game of his career. The seldom used Cubs catcher hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 8th inning to give Chicago a 7-5 victory over Boston. Just two innings earlier Giuliani tied the game at 5 with his first 2-run blast of the game. The longtime minor leaguer had just 5 career homeruns entering the game.

In the other National League game Stan Hack drove in 3 runs as Brooklyn dumped New York 4-1.

PLAYER PROFILE - TONY GIULIANI
Tony Giuliani is your classic bench player. Released by 4 teams the St. Paul, Minnesota native spent 9 seasons in the minors before finally earning a major league roster spot for a full season. Just like his real life career, his AllSports replay career has hardly been noteworthy but Giuliani is the type of player you love to see have that occassional moment of fame like he did by hitting a pair of homers in today's game.

His career is a testament to preservation. Given his first taste of major league action with the Browns in September of 1939, Giuliani went 1-for-13 in 4 games and was never recalled by the Browns again. St Louis released him in 1939 but he was picked up by the Giants almost immediately. After a year in their system he was released in May of 1940 only to get a chance with Brooklyn a couple of weeks later. The Dodgers would release him in 1941 without ever moving him above AA but in mid-June of that year the Phillies signed him. He would get his second shot at the majors in 1942 but would get just 2 hits in 12 at bats and was released by the Phillies in May of 1943. The Cubs signed him a month later and gave him a 4-game trial in September of 1943. He would see some major league action in 1944 due to injuries and in the spring of 1945 beat out Clyde McCullough for the backup catcher spot after Bob Scheffing was moved to the Yankees.

It was a case of being in the right spot at the right time as Giuliani did a decent job as the backup and won himself a World Series ring. He was 0-for-2 in his two series appearances but that did not diminish the excitement of being a member of a World Champion ballclub. Today was the first time in his career he ever hit two homers or had more than 2 rbi in a major league game.

In real life Giuliani hit .233 in 243 career major league games with the Browns, Senators and Dodgers. He never hit a homerun in real life and never played more than 71 games in a season. In researching his career I learned he actually just passed away a month ago at the age of 91. Other notes including he was the opposing catcher on the day Joe Dimaggio made his major league debut in 1936. He was a longtime scout for the Senators/Twins and among others was responsible for scouting Kent Hrbek and John Castino.

PLAYER PROFILE - RON NORTHEY
Journeyman outfielder Ron Northey enjoyed far and away the most productive day of his major league career today when he drove in 7 runs in a 12-2 Phillies win. While never released like Giuliani, Northey did have to spend a fair bit of time in the minors and a lot of time on the bench before his big day.

In real life Northey spent 12 seasons in the majors and was a career .276 hitter for the Phillies, Cards, Cubs and White Sox. His son Scott would play 20 games for the expansion Royals in 1969. His best season was 1944 with the Phillies when he hit 22 homers and drove in 104 runs.

RED SOX INCH CLOSER TO .500
After starting the season 3-15 it is amazing that the Boston Red Sox are within 4 games of the .500 mark less than 2 weeks later. That is what going on a streak that sees you win 9 of 10 games will do for you. The Red Sox beat Detroit for the third straight time, dropping the Tigers 6-2 at Fenway behind an Andy Karl 6-hitter.

In other American League action Cleveland beat New York 5-3 handing Dizzy Dean his second straight loss after starting the season 5-0. Oscar Grimes and Mike Tresh each hit a 2-run homer to lead the Tribe.

Catcher Norm Schlueter, recalled just 5 days ago, hit his second homer of the season as the Chicago White Sox dumped St Louis 7-3. In Washington, Joe Haynes went the distance as the Senators topped Philadelphia 7-2

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - UCLA HAS A PAIR OF POTENTIAL PICKS
Two former UCLA Bruins could hear their names called on draft day. Senior forward Chet *McNabb was the team's leading scorer and it's top rebounder. A 4-year starter McNabb leaves UCLA as it's second highest career scorer.

PG Bruce *Hale saw limited action his first two seasons but really blossomed as a junior. While the Bruins would love to have him back for his senior campaign he does appear ready for the next level.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
LOHRMAN BLANKS YANKS FOR 16TH STRAIGHT WIN
Cleveland Indians righthander Bill Lohrman is about as close to a guaranteed victory as you will find. Lohrman improved to 7-0 this season and stretching back to last year has won his last 16 straight decisions after Cleveland blasted New York 7-0. Lohrman went the distance allowing just 4 hits and lowering his league leading era to 0.90. Mike Tresh hit his second homer in as many days to lead the Tribe offense.

The Chicago White Sox mounted a huge comeback to beat the St Louis Browns 4-3 in 10 innings. Trailing 3-0 in the top of the ninth outfielder Danny Litwhiler hit a 3-run homer to tie the game for Chicago and then St Louis starter Tom Baker threw a wild pitch in the top of the 10th that allowed pinch runner Bob Maier to score the winning run.

In other American League games Red Barrett tossed a 5-hit shutout as Washington blanked Philadelphia 9-0. In Boston, Joe Gantenbein and Dom Dallessandro homered as Detroit doubled the Red Sox 10-5.

In the National League Ken Raffensberger and the Braves blanked Chicago 2-0. Raffensberger tossed a complete game 4-hitter to even his record at 3-3.

Stan Ferens seems to be fully recovered from the back injury that cost him nearly a full year. The Cardinals veteran starter improved his record to 2-1 with his second straight complete game 5 hitter, this one a 4-0 win in Pittsburgh. Whitey Kurowski and Marty Marion each had 3 hits for St Louis.

Joe Medwick and Johnny Ripple homered as Cincinnati hammered Philadelphia 16-4 while Hank Leiber's 2-run double in the top of the ninth gave the New York Giants a 5-3 win in Brooklyn. Giants rookie catcher Yogi Berra enjoyed his first 3 hit game.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - TWO WASHINGTON GUARDS MAY GO IN ROUND 1
University of Washington hoops fans were more than a litte dissappointed to learn that guards Bob *Harrison and George *Feigenbaum were turning pro after their sophomore seasons. Harrison in particular will be missed after leading the team in assists and finishing second in scoring with 14.9 ppg. Feigenbaum was bothered by minor injuries all season and never did get in the starting lineup during his two years with the Huskies. However, he has a higher upside as far as NBA scouts are concerned.

GOLF - BING CROSBY PRO-AM
WEETMAN LEADS AFTER FIRST ROUND OF CROSBY
Britian's Harry Weetman has a 2 stroke lead after the opening round of the Bing Crosby Pro-Am. Weetman, who played on the Del Monte course has a 2 stroke lead on Sam King, who also played Del Monte. Half of the field played Del Monte and the other half played Cypress Point. They will switch for Friday's second round and then the entire field plus the top six amateurs will compete at Pebble Beach for Saturday's final round.

Among the amateurs Scott xTibbetts, who tied for second last week in Phoenix, contined his hot play with a 70 yesterday. xTibbetts played at Del Monte and he is tied with William Scarborough III, who also shot a 70 but at the tougher Cypress Point course. Among the celebrity amateurs, UCLA hoops star and possible NBA draft pick Chet McNabb carded an impressive 77 with host Bing Crosby just a stroke behind him.

KANE WINS SLUGFEST WITH HERMAN
Peter Kane and Vic Herman went toe-to-toe for 9 rounds in Glasgow before the referee stopped their bantamweight bout due to heavy bleeding around both of Herman's eyes. With the TKO Kane, who was ahead on all 3 scorecards, moves to 17-2-1. Herman falls to 14-4-2 but he certainly gave the Liverpool lad some competition. Both fighters looked like they had been in a war when it was over as Kane was bleeding from the mouth and from a bad gash above his right eye.

There is boxing action in the USA tonight as a pair of top featherweight contenders will meet at National Hall in San Francisco. Seattle's Harold Hoshino will take on Charlie Riley. Hoshino, known as the Japanesse Sandman, is considered the top contender for World Champion Willie Pep's crown. Hoshino is 25-3-1 with 18 knockouts. Riley, who hails from St Louis, is 22-4 with 12 ko's and considered the 5th best featherweight in the world. Hoshino and Riley have met once before, early in the postwar tournament with Hoshino scoring a second round TKO. It is expected the winner of this fight will get a shot at Pep.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
DEFENDING CHAMPS CONTINUE TO LEAD THE WAY
If the first month is any indication you can expect to see the Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates meet in the World Series for the second straight year. Both the Tribe and Bucs have started quickly and enjoy the lead in their respective leagues.

Pittsburgh has been getting a tremendous pitching effort from Preacher Roe (7-0, 2.19) and plenty of offense led by Bob Elliott (.404,6,32), Arky Vaughan (.321,5,31) and Ralph Kiner (.323,3,24). The Pirates led the St Louis Cardinals by 4.5 games even though Cy Young winner Cliff Melton has been sidelined for the past 3 weeks.

Cleveland has the best 1-2 punch in the American League right now in starting pitchers Bill Lohrman (7-0, 0.90) and Steve Gromek (6-0, 4.24). The Indians offense is not as powerful as Pittsburgh's but they do lead in the American League in runs scored thanks to outfielders Jeff Heath (.356,4,20) and Ival Goodman (.304.2.18) and third baseman Oscar Grimes (.257,6,19).

In yesterday's action Jeff Heath hit his fourth homer of the season and Steve Gromek improved to 6-0 as Cleveland beat Chicago 3-2. The Pirates needed a 10th inning rbi single from Arky Vaughan to beat St Louis 3-2.

Other American League action had Detroit beat Washington 4-3, Fred Caliguiri improved his record to 5-1 as Philadelphia beat Boston 8-3 while in St Louis, the Yankees beat the Browns 7-5 thanks to a 4-rbi game from outfielder Sam Byrd.

In the National League pinch-hitter Butch Nieman's bases loaded double in the 7th inning helped Boston past the Cubs 6-5, the New York Giants edged Brooklyn 3-2 while Philadelphia outslugged Cincinnati 10-9.

RILEY EARNS SHOT AT WILLIE PEP
In a bout to determine who would get a shot at World Featherweight Champion Willie Pep, Charley Riley proved he wanted the opportunity more. Riley withstood an early barrage from number one ranked contender Harold Hoshino and gradually wore down the Japanesse Sandman before putting him to sleep for good with a 15th round knockout. St Louis native Riley was by far the better tactical boxer in the bout and improved his record to 23-4 with the victory.

Hoshino was sent to the canvas twice, in the 11th round and again a minute into the 15th and final round. He struggled to his knees but could not beat the count the second time. Hoshino's record falls to 25-4-1. Hoshino had beaten Riley by a second round TKO when they meet during the postwar tournament slightly over a year ago.

Prior to this bout Pep had said he would fight the winner in a title defense, likely in September. Pep, at 18-0, most recently defended his title with a unanimous decision over European champ Ray Famechon last month in Boston. It will be the first meeting between Pep and Riley in my replay.

In real life Pep and Riley met in January of 1950 in St Louis with Pep retaining his world title with a fifth round knock out of Riley.

ORTIZ TRIES TO GET BACK ON TRACK
Bantamweight Manny Ortiz was 37-0 before losing back to back fights including a huge upset loss at the hands of Canadian Fernando Gagnon that cost Ortiz the world title. The Corona, California native also lost to Cuban champ Luis Galvani in April. He will try to get back to his winning ways of old in a bout against another tough opponent. San Francisco native Tony Olivera is 25-2-2 and coming off of a majority draw against Galvani. Tonight's bout will take place in Los Angeles.

GOLF - BING CROSBY PRO-AM
LOCKE AND STRANAHAN SHARE LEAD
Bobby Locke and Frank Stranahan share the lead heading into the final round of the Bing Crosby Pro-Am. The finale of the 3-round event should be exciting as eight golfers including Byron Nelson are within 2 strokes of the lead. All golfers will compete at the fabulous Pebble Beach course after the first two rounds were contested at Monterey's other championship courses - Del Monte and Cypress Point.

The top 5 amateurs made the cut and they will be chasing California native John Dawson, who won the event in 1942, which was the last time it was held, and former Pepperdine student Scott xTibbetts. Dawson has his work cut out for him if he is to win the outright title again. He and xTibbetts are 4 strokes behind Locke and Stranahan. The top 5 amateurs automatically made the final round. In addition to the amateur co-leaders they are William Scarborough III from Bucks County, Pennsylvania; Britian's Joe Carr and California native Bob Rosberg.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - VARUN HUNTER
CCNY senior forward Varun Hunter looks like a potential NBA all-star. Hunter has helped CCNY to the elite 8 each of the past 3 seasons and he certainly has plenty of experience playing for a winner, during his 3 years as a starter CCNY was 92-17 with a pair of Eastern Independant Conference titles. All-Conference each of the past two years, the native of Bow, New Hampshire led the EIC in scoring and finished second in rebounding this past season.

He is projected to be selected within the top 10 picks of next month's NBA draft.
