We seriously need to go on Rockies Watch, considering that The Pile is currently…

…6-32 (a .158 winning percentage, which projects to 26-136 on the season)
…on a 7-game losing streak
…behind at home to San Diego, 19-0. (In the top of the 5th.)

At least try to try, Pile!

When will MLB learn that baseball can not be competitively played on the top of a mountain?

Said facetiously, no doubt, since both sides will prosper or suffer equally from the atmospheric effects. If anything, the Rockies will adapt more readily, playing half of their games at Mile High Stadium [Yes, I know it goes by another name now; I refuse to look it up and be outraged by "Franky Furter's All-Beef Hot Dog Stadium" or something], and thus have a distinct advantage.

Astros' Lance McCullers Jr., family get death threats amid loss

Quote:
Houston Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. said he and his family were the subjects of death threats made on social media after he allowed seven runs as part of a 10-run first inning for the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night.
We have to do a better job of raising our children. We have been failing at that for a few generations now.

They score 3.2 runs per game and have a -134 run differential in 39 games. If that's including their presumed advantage, then I don't want to see them play on neutral ground.

Highly unpopular opinion: once you all start giving your kids a slap again for serious misbehavior, we can all get somehow normal adults again. Stop raising little kings and queens and terrorists that can't handle any form of adversity. Like their team losing a ******* ballgame.

Also, turn off the social media until they are old enough to handle it. Like, 21. That's not to say that these are kids making the death threats but they are former kids who weren't raised properly.

Also, restrict your children so that they are not hanging around malls at age 12 and so that they are not playing "Ding Dong Ditch" at 3AM when they are 18.

Also, bring back Social Studies in order to prepare children for local, national, and global civic life; in other words, to care about something more important than themselves. What a strange concept; caring about something other than oneself.

But these things take time, effort, and will. Besides, by now, many of today's parents were themselves raised that way. And Social Studies is a dead science. So don't look for any turnarounds soon.

Well, let's get back to sports so that we don't derail the thread. How 'bout them Rockies?

They don't have Social Studies any more? I knew they broadened out with sociology and such once they decided not to have it be purely Civics (as it was in my dad's day) , but I'm a bit surprised they dropped the whole idea.

Oh, and ban TikTok, already. (And any other apps run by the Chinese government. They are not looking to help build a harmonious Western society. I'd make a substatial wager on it, even though I quit gambling last century.)

As for baseball, didn't Lance Jr. get pilloried for a failure once before, or am I misremembering things? And FFS, this is baseball. Nobody goes undefeated. You can hate when your team has an off-night, but to act as if a game in MAY is doing you irreversible harm is short-term thinking to ridiculous levels.

Moderators, your continued indulgence just a bit longer. Thank you.

What Happened to Social Studies?: The Disappearing Curriculum

Quote:
The diminished attention to social studies education began with the standards and testing movement. As the national push for accountability became ever stronger, states focused first on standards in literacy and mathematics. In the face of pressures to focus on literacy and mathematics, schools and textbook publishers are attempting to "integrate" social studies into the teaching of reading. However, simply reading about topics in the social studies for comprehension and skill development does not address social studies goals or the civic mission of schools.
Basically, it doesn't pay. It's something that should be stressed but is not anymore. Now we have advanced calculus and A.P. bio for 9th graders, but kids hardly know about the constitution and separation of powers and why that is important to democracy. And why we should vote for something other than self-interest all the time. And how important it is that we do things for the community because we can't live entirely on our own.

Now, let's get back to sports.

[Anecdote only; no further OT] Advanced calculus in 9th grade? Crikes, I went to "one of the best High Schools in the country" per national rankings, and I didn't get Calc until 11th, and only then because I was a smarty-pants who had knocked out both basic Algebra and Geometry at a private school in 9th and when I moved to the highly-funded-and-acclaimed public school in 10th, I was taking Algebra/Trig with a class of juniors and ditto for Calc with a bunch of seniors when I was a year behind.

We could make those Texas Instruments TI-45s sing, baby!

[/end OT]

Social Studies is inconvenient to half of the political parties in the US. The concept of separation of church and state, congressional oversight, judicial review, and civil rights. (and MANY other topics).

Remember how we thought the White Sox of 2024 were bad? Goodness, this Rockies team is something else. I'm not going to lie; I am rooting for them to set records.
