1921 World Series results
1921 World Series: St. Louis Browns vs. Cincinnati Reds
Results Game 1, October 5th, 1921, Sportsman's Park Road Win Lifts Cincinnati to 1-0 Lead in WS The Cincinnati Reds wasted no time taking the lead in the World Series, beating the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman's Park by the score of 4-2. The win gives Cincinnati a 1-0 lead in the best-of-9 series. Reds left-hander Dutch Leonard threw 9.0 innings allowing 2 runs. A key moment came with two out in the top of the fourth. That's when Leonard hit a fastball from Claude Hendrix for a run-scoring single, putting Cincinnati up, 2-0. "It has been an incredible experience today," Leonard said in the clubhouse following the game. "It's a short list of people who have started in the World Series at all, and an even shorter list who have done a good job of it." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Reds lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 6th, 1921, Sportsman's Park Reds Hammered by Ruth, Drop Game 2 to Browns St. Louis right fielder Babe Ruth was the difference-maker for the Browns in what turned into a shootout with the Cincinnati Reds. Ruth earned accolades after going 3-for-4 in the 6-5 Browns win. With the victory, the Browns moved into a 1-1 tie in the best-of-9 series. Buck Weaver chipped in for St. Louis, stroking a crucial 2-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning. For the game, the third baseman went 1 for 4, while adding 2 RBIs. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Browns manager Travis Helfrich said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 7th, 1921, Sportsman's Park Ruth Blasts Reds, Browns Take Game 3, 14-6 Riding the 2-hit performance of right fielder Babe Ruth, the St. Louis Browns stopped the visiting Cincinnati Reds, 14-6, in Game 3 of the World Series. Ruth belted 2 home runs. He scored 3 times and drove in 6 for the Browns, who now lead the best-of-9 series, 2 games to 1. Ruth went 2 for 5 with 2 home runs. He scored 3 times and drove in 6 against the Reds. In the bottom of the first inning, he hit a 3-run home run that put St. Louis in front, 3-0. "We're one game closer to our goal," St. Louis manager Travis Helfrich said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played for October 9th, 1921 at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Browns lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 9th, 1921, Redland Field Raucous Redland Field Crowd Propels Reds to 9-5 Victory; Series Tied at 2 The Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis Browns, 9-5, in Game 4 of the World Series. Making an impact was first baseman Jake Daubert, who was 3-4 with a double and 2 singles. He scored 4 times. The win moves Cincinnati into a 2-2 tie with St. Louis in the series. The game turned with one out in the bottom of the fourth when Daubert hit a run-scoring single. It thrust the Reds into the lead, 5-4. "Every team in baseball loses," Browns manager Travis Helfrich said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Series tied 2-2 Game 5, October 10th, 1921, Redland Field Road Win Lifts St. Louis to 3-2 Lead in WS The St. Louis Browns defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 13-10, in Game 5 of the World Series. A big contributor was first baseman George Sisler, who went 4 for 5 with a double, 3 singles, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3. The win moves St. Louis into a 3-2 lead in the series. Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Babe Ruth? The St. Louis right fielder had a 2-run double in the top of the first inning to put the Browns on top, 2-0. For the game, Ruth had 1 double and 1 single in 6 at-bats. "It's on me," said Reds manager David Price. "The guys I sent out there today were the wrong ones for the situation. I'll be sure to send the right ones out next time." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Browns lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 11th, 1921, Redland Field Reds Even With Browns After Home Win The Cincinnati Reds took down the St. Louis Browns by the score of 6-2 and moved into a 3-3 tie in the World Series. The largest share of the credit belongs to Cincinnati starter Whitey Glazner, who threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. A key moment came with two out in the bottom of the seventh. That's when Glazner hit a fastball from Sherry Smith for a 2-run single, putting Cincinnati up, 5-2. "There's nothing like the postseason," said Glazner, "to ramp up the pressure." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Series tied 3-3 Game 7, October 12th, 1921, Redland Field Road Win Lifts St. Louis to 4-3 Lead in WS The St. Louis Browns got an exceptional performance from starter Art Nehf, who silenced the Cincinnati offense en route to a 3-0 shutout win in Game 7 of the World Series. The Reds could never get a bead on the left-handed Nehf, who threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball. The Browns now hold a 4-3 advantage in the best-of-9 series. Nehf, who was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, threw 120 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing no runs. "We're happy," Nehf told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." Game 8 is scheduled for Friday at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Game 8, October 14th, 1921, Sportsman's Park World Series to Browns Sometimes, the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better. It was the latter case in 1921, as the St. Louis Browns topped the Cincinnati Reds 11-10 tonight at Sportsmans Park to win the World Series. It was the 4th title in franchise history. "When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said St. Louis first baseman George Sisler, who was named series MVP. The Browns took the series 5-3. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 87-67 record. St. Louis manager Travis Helfrich grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Sisler's words. "George said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said. Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come. Browns win series 5-3 World Series MVP: 1B George Sisler (St. Louis Browns) |
