Bout 293 - Andrew Golota versus Michael Spinks

Round 12 Commentary

The fighters touch gloves in the middle of the ring as the 12th and final round begins.
The swelling on the face of Spinks is noticeable, even at a distance.
Golota just comes up short with the uppercut.
Both fighters are throwing punches but Golota is scoring more than Spinks.
Golota continues to pop the jab.
A solid right-hand scores for Golota.
Spinks is now dealing with the effects of increased swelling around the eyes.
Spinks just absorbed a terrifying shot to the body.
Golota connects with a solid hook! He doesn’t have to throw another punch here as he has this fight under control!
Golota brushes the ropes and quickly spins away, heading back to ring center.
Both fighters are now throwing punches, and neither is scoring more than the other.
Golota is raining blows down on Spinks, who is obviously hurt.
Golota wants to take the decision out of the hands of the judges and he has a chance to do just that!
Great work to the body by Golota as he scores with both hands.
Golota stuns Spinks. Golota has exceptional killer instinct and is going to work now to try and finish him!
Golota pummels Spinks, capping off his assault with a stiff cross!
There's the final bell saving Spinks! This fight's in the hands of the judges now ...

Bout 294 - Larry Holmes versus Leon Spinks

Round 12 Commentary

The bell sounds for the 12th and final round of this fight.
Holmes got quite a pep talk in his corner; we'll see if Manny Seamon's instructions work.
Spinks's corner gave his swelling priority during the minute off and they've done an excellent job of preventing it from worsening.
Holmes retreats to his opponents corner ...
Holmes slips inside and lands a hook.
Spinks throws a flurry of punches but Holmes either blocks or slips them.
We have a lull in the action.
Spinks lands a stinging jab.
Holmes pins Spinks in the corner!
Larry Holmes's jab is fast and accurate as Spinks eats it.
Larry Holmes pins Spinks's arms! The fighters are tied up ...
Now they break clean.
Holmes seems to have done enough to win this fight.
There's the bell and this contest is in the books. Both fighters act as if they've won.

Bout 295 - Evander Holyfield versus Renaldo Snipes

Round 12 Commentary

The bell sounds for the 12th and final round of this fight.
The cut on the forehead suffered by Snipes has been closed for the time being, thanks to a great job by his cut man.
If the swelling was lessened by Holyfield's corner, it wasn't reduced enough to make a big difference.
A minute wasn't enough to eliminate or even significantly reduce Snipes's swelling.
Snipes eats a jab from Holyfield.
Snipes is trying to avoid shots to the body, but he better get his hands up!
Snipes and Holyfield are in a clinch, Ramos hollers at them to break and start fighting.
Referee Ramos has to separate the two ...
Last rounds knockdown of Snipes doesn't appear to have had any carry over for him here in Round 12.
Snipes and Holyfield each take a step back.
Snipes's corner is shouting at him to be more aggressive.
Holyfield moves into a neutral corner.
Snipes gets in a hook to the body of Holyfield.
Snipes holds his arms up in disgust as Holyfield holds him around his waist.
Ramos is shouting at Holyfield to break!
This Round has been uneventful with the fight on the line!

Bout 296 - Ingemar Johansson versus James “Bonecrusher” Smith

Round 1 Commentary

Here come the boxers out of the corners. We've got a fight about to break out!
Both fighters come into this fight predicting a win... But neither is pressing the action right now.
Johansson lands a paralyzing uppercut!
That punch really rocked Smith!
That combination from Ingemar Johansson lands with some authority!
Smith looks to work the body, but Johansson covers up nicely.
Johansson scores with a glancing cross.
OH! “Bonecrusher” Smith landed the big hook flush!
Johansson was stunned by that blow!
Johansson lands a powerful cross right on the button!
Johansson doesn't connect with the jab.
That punch caught Johansson clean. He brings his arms up in a defensive posture. Now he pitches forward!
Johansson goes down after a delayed reaction to the hook by James Smith!
Referee Prayadsab starts the count ...
10!
And the referee waves his arms to signal this fight is over as Johansson is out cold!
“Bonecrusher” Smith wins by way of knockout here in round 1.

Bout 297 - Vitali Klitschko versus Earnie Shavers

Round 12 Commentary

We go to the last round, as the bell sounds to start the 12th.
Shavers scores with a cross to the Boiler.
Shavers bangs home a hard cross.
That last shot has reopened a cut on Klitschko because the blood is flowing again.
Klitschko has emerged bloodied once again, as the cut above his eyebrow has, apparently, reopened.
Klitschko seems to be having some difficulty seeing.
It's not that he's bleeding all that badly but the location of the cut - over the eye - makes it a bit more serious.
And talk about timing, the referee has stepped in and momentarily stopped the fight.
He's looking at the cut above Klitschko's eye and is now leading him toward the ringside physician.
The doctor is peering at the wound and he's shrugged his shoulders and he's shaking his head - is that a good thing or bad?
Well, it's good from Klitschko's perspective and the cheer that arises from the crowd tells us all we need to know: there's going to be more fisticuffs.
Shavers is backed into his opponents’ corner ...
Vitali Klitschko pummels Shavers, capping off his assault with a stiff hook!
Shavers lands a hard hook to the head and Klitschko is down!!
The count starts ...
At 9, Klitschko still looks shaky after getting up from the knockdown and Krupenich is taking a long look at him.
Klitschko appears to be badly shaken, but Krupenich is going to allow the fight to go on.
Shavers lands a sweet uppercut Klitschko stumbles back and down he goes. What a knockdown!
Referee Krupenich crouches over Klitschko as he starts the count again …
At 9, Klitschko's legs look bad as he manages to rise from the knockdown.
Krupenich is looking at Klitschko closely, and he will allow the fight to continue.
Earnie Shavers drops the right-hand flush on Klitschko's chin!
Shavers rams the jab into the chest of Klitschko. He's making very effective use of that punch.
Shavers knows that Klitschko is in a world of hurt. His Killer Instinct has kicked in and he's firing away at Vitali Klitschko.
Klitschko starts to go down and Krupenich grabs him and is stopping the fight!
Shavers is going to get the TKO victory here in Round 12!!

Bout 298 - Wladimir Klitschko versus Ezzard Charles

Round 12 Commentary

The bell sounds for the 12th and final round of this fight.
Yank Durham knows Charles lost that last round, but he took the positive approach between rounds.
If the swelling was lessened by Charles's corner, it wasn't reduced enough to make a big difference.
Charles traps Wladimir Klitschko in the corner!
Charles lands a double left, one to the head and one to the body.
Klitschko throws a punch and lands. Ezzard Charles scores with a counter. Looks like Klitschko was a little more effective.
Klitschko misses with the jab but scores with the follow up cross.
Charles bangs home a hard cross.
He appears to be rebounding from the knockdown he suffered in the last frame.
Klitschko lands a jab. He's using it as both an offensive and defensive weapon on occasions.
A cross lands for Charles. "Steelhammer" didn't see that one coming.
Charles fires a lead right that Klitschko manages to avoid.
Klitschko seems to have done enough to win this fight.
Call it a night because this fight is over! Let's see who gets the nod from the judges …

Bout 299 - Lennox Lewis versus Donovan Ruddock

Round 12 Commentary

There are 3:00 more minutes of fighting to go in the 12th and final round.
Lennox Lewis and Ruddock each take a step back.
Ruddock tries to drop the right hand over the top but Lewis ducks under it.
Nelson warns Lewis for holding and hitting, although he is doing a lot more holding than hitting.
Lewis works downstairs, scoring with series of hooks.
Lewis smothers Ruddock's attack as Ruddock tries to get off some shots inside.
Lewis lets his hands go again and gets in several scoring blows.
Lewis is protecting the body nicely as Donovan Ruddock fails to score inside.
Ruddock can't find the range as he tries to work the body again.
Lewis seems to have done enough to win this fight.
That's it. This fight has gone the distance and now we'll await the official decision.

Bout 300 - Sonny Liston versus Jerry Quarry

Round 12 Commentary

The crowd would like to see a knockout as the bell sounds for Round 12, the final round of the fight.
A minute wasn't enough to eliminate or even significantly reduce Quarry's swelling.
Quarry tries a hook, but Liston blocks it and then he scores with a hook of his own!
Liston throws the cross and scores to the head of Quarry.
Liston is really focused in this round.
You could feel the breeze after that miss by Liston!
Quarry connects with a solid combination!
That jab from Liston stopped Quarry in his tracks.
The action slows for the moment & Liston seems content with that as he is seemingly ahead.
Now Liston feels it's a good strategy to hug Quarry and force Jen-Kin to come separate them.
Jen-Kin is shouting at Liston to break!
Liston scores with a quick hook to the head of Quarry after Jerry Quarry missed with a wild shot of his own.
Liston is holding again ...
Jen-Kin steps in and breaks it up.
Liston seems to have done enough to win this fight.
The fighters hug each other in the middle of the ring as the 12th and final round ends.

Bout 301 - Joe Louis versus Floyd Patterson

Round 1 Commentary

That's the bell, summoning the two fighters to begin trading punches here in the first.
The uppercut just landed by Louis is a nice weapon on the inside.
A brutal combination from Patterson connects to the solar plexus!
Louis in on unsteady legs after those punches.
That hook from Louis snapped Patterson's head back violently!
Patterson is suddenly in trouble!
Referee Podgorski steps in and admonishes Louis for hitting below the belt.
Louis steps back as he tries to create some punching room.
Louis jolts Patterson with a hard jab.
Louis lands a hard uppercut!
Louis has Floyd Patterson in trouble after that punch!
Louis is told to watch the low blows again by Podgorski.
Oh no! Ref Podgorski is indicating that foul by Louis was blatant!
No! Are you kidding me? Podgorski is stopping the fight and awarding the victory to Patterson by disqualification!!
We will be lucky to get out of here alive as there is mayhem in the ring & we’re getting pelted by debris thrown from the crowd!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen! Joe Louis has been disqualified!

The winner is ... Floyd Patterson!

The arena security forces have now been joined by the police in the ring … this is crazy!

Lyle shoots a vicious cross right down the pipe and catches Page flush!
Mercy! that was a crushing blow! Page is trying to hang on ...
Lyle lands a devastating cross!
Lyle misses with the left and then fails to connect with the right as well.
Lyle seems to have done enough to win this fight.

Bout 303 - Rocky Marciano versus Ken Norton

Round 10 Commentary

Norton is getting his full rest as he remains on his stool as the Round 10 bell sounds.
Marciano's corner is an experienced crew but the swelling he's suffered looks almost as bad as it did before the minute break.
If the swelling was lessened by Norton's corner, it wasn't reduced enough to make a big difference.
Marciano connects with a nasty cross!
Norton hits the deck after a huge cross and he looks hurt.
Referee Neumann crouches over Ken Norton as he starts the count …
Norton tries to clear his head as Neumann reaches the count of 3.
At 5, Norton is back up but his eyes have that vacant look about them. Norton will take an 8 count here.
Neumann is allowing the fight to continue and the action resumes.
Marciano lands a hard cross!
Norton's eyes are starting to worsen as the swelling increases.
Marciano misses. He had an opening and whiffed with the punch.
Having been sent to the deck in each of the last two rounds Norton is in big trouble!
Marciano lands a smashing hook!
Rocky Marciano pins Norton in the corner!
Rocky Marciano connects with a devastating uppercut to the head, he hits like a Mule!
Norton backs into his own corner ...
And Norton tastes the power of a crushing combination from Rocky Marciano!
Marciano lands a crushing uppercut!
Marciano just delivered some big time hurt with that punch! Even the fans at ringside felt it!
And Norton can't go on much longer with this punishment.
Referee Neumann jumps in and is waving it off!! It's over!
The winner by TKO here in round 10 ... Rocky Marciano!

Bout 304 - Buster Mathis versus Orlin Norris

Round 12 Commentary

The bell sounds for the 12th and final round of this fight.
Mathis and Norris are leaning on one another, and referee Curtin pushes them apart and tells them to mix it up.
Not much happening now.
Orlin Norris is trying to put his punches together and he tags Mathis with a nice combination of punches.
Norris has Mathis cornered!
Norris just misses with a huge shot as Mathis chooses the perfect time to suddenly backpedal.
Norris tries a straight right that's blocked by the gloves of Mathis.
That combination from Mathis has some power behind it!
Norris looks to work the body, but Mathis covers up nicely.
Mathis scores with a two-punch combination to the midsection.
We have a lull in the action again.
Buster Mathis retreats to his own corner...
Mathis lands the hook downstairs as he continues to find openings in Orlin Norris's defense.
Mathis appears to have this fight under control.
This bout's over, fight fans! The scorecards will tell the tale in this one.

Round 12 Commentary

The bell sounds for the last round of the bout.
Teddy Atlas knows Mercer lost that last round, but he took the positive approach between rounds.
Mercer's corner is an experienced crew but the swelling he's suffered looks almost as bad as it did before the minute break.
Mercer attempts to go to the body, but can't connect.
We have a lull in the action.
Mercer is turning this fight into a clinching and holding affair as he continues to wrap his arms around Moorer.
Referee Viruet steps in to break it up.
Moorer backs into the far corner.
Moorer takes a punishing over hand right to the jaw!
Last round's knockdown doesn't appear to have had any carry over here in Round 12 for Mercer.
These guys are really going at it but Mercer looks to be getting the worse of it.
Mercer's left eye continues to swell and soon his vision will be completely obscured from that side.
Mercer throws a crushing right to Michael Moorer's jaw!
Mercer lands a short left hook to the head.
Mercer misses with the jab. He lets go with a left and that fails to find its mark, too.
Mercer takes a punishing over hand left to the jaw!
That punch has Mercer staggering around the ring like a drunken sailor!
Moorer fires a shot, but it glances off Ray Mercer's shoulder.
Moorer appears to have this fight under control even though he may lose this Round.
There's the final bell! This fight's in the hands of the judges now.

Bout 306 - Karl Mildenberger versus Archie Moore

Round 6 Commentary

Moore was a little slow getting off his stool this round.
Both of these guys look just like they came out of their dressing rooms - not a mark on them.
Moore can't score with short uppercut inside. Mildenberger got his gloves in front of the punch.
OH my! Mildenberger just lands a huge uppercut and Moore hits the canvas!
Referee Krupenich picks up the count from the timekeeper ...
Moore lurches to his feet at the count of 7 but he stumbles and is down on his knees again. He's making another effort!

Mildenberger leaps onto the turnbuckle and raises his arms in jubilation as Moore is counted out!
This one ends with a knockout in the 6th round!

We go to the ring where J.D. Lyons is ready with the call ...

Bout 307 - Muhammad Ali versus Chris Byrd

Round 12 Commentary

The crowd would like to see a knockout as the bell sounds for Round 12, the final round of the fight.
The swelling on the face of Byrd is noticeable, even at a distance.
Ali does a great job of moving as Chris Byrd tries to work inside.
Ali uses subtle movement and a tight guard protecting his body as Byrd tries vainly to score.
Byrd misses with the jab but scores with the follow up cross.
Ali takes a tremendous hook to the jaw!
Ali was staggered by that punch ...
Byrd has Ali trapped in the right neutral corner ...
Chris Byrd throws a flurry of punches but Ali either blocks or slips them.
Ali steals a quick glance at his corner.
A perfect right cross from Ali stops Byrd dead in his tracks!
Chris Byrd just landed a three-punch combo!
Ali follows up with a wake-up call of his own !!! He really caught Byrd with a sharp combination!
Chris Byrd just misses with a huge shot as Ali chooses the perfect time to suddenly backpedal.
Byrd lands the jab but comes up short with a second one right behind it.
Ali appears to have this fight under control despite that Byrd probably won the Round.
There's the final bell! This fight's in the hands of the judges now.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the scorecards are in, and here is your official decision ...

Michael Lee, South Korea scores the bout 116 to 114 for Chris Byrd

And Angelo Dundee throws his arms up in disgust …

Frank Forbes, United States scores the bout 119 to 111 for Muhammad Ali

Luca Montella, Italy scores the bout 117 to 113 for ... Your winner by split decision … and still undefeated … Muhammad Ali!

And Dundee is screaming at the South Korean judge even though Ali has won this fight!
