1928 Regular Season
Dutch Leonard wins his 300th game early in April. I’ve enjoyed watching his career. He’s 36 now, and he’s a HOF shoe in, but things haven’t been good the last year and a half. He still has solid ratings, but his 1927 ERA of 5.21 makes it hard for the Cubs to pitch him. If he continues that this year, I’d say Leonard would need to hang em up. Dutch Leonard In early June, Ty Cobb recorded hit 3858. That puts him exactly 100 hits behind Ed Delahanty. The record is in reach now. Ty’s skills are deteriorating, he can’t field a lick anymore, but somehow, he’s currently hitting .434! ![]() Ty Cobb Wow, Mule Suttles has taken over the Ty Cobb yearly injury role. He’s hitting .391, with 29 home runs, and 128 RBI’s on August 1st. He was on pace for 199 RBI’s! He fracture’s his finger. Doctors say 2 months to recover which is the rest of the season. He’s probably done enough for the MVP, but wow, what could have been. Philly, BTW, has the worst pitching staff in baseball again, but are 70-29 right now. Their offense is unreal. As a team, they are hitting .332. 720 runs, in 99 games, works out to 7.2 runs a game. Since the Mule Suttles injury, the Phillies are 14-23. They still hold 1st place by 12.5 games halfway through September, but they are a different team. In the AL, the Philadelphia Athletics hold a 2 game lead on the Senators. This would be the A’s 1st pennant, and a matchup with the cross town rivals Phillies would be awesome! The Senators win 6 in a row heading into the season finale, trailing by 1 game, but they allow 2 runs in the final inning, and lose to the Browns 5-4. That loss eliminates them, making the Athletics the AL champs. It's a all Philadelphia World Series! ![]() Satchel Paige has a breakout season. He's just dominating. If he was pitching in the AL, that ERA would be a full run lower! Lou Gehrig wins the NL Triple Crown. When healthy, the pairing of Gehrig and Suttles can't be beat. Gehrig has a habit of keeping pretty good company! |

![]() The Phillies become the first team to score over 1000 runs in a season! Mule Suttles returned to the lineup during the final weekend of the season and recorded 4 hits. He's back and healthy, which has to make the Phillies the odds on favourites. |

1928 World Series
The Phillies scored 39 runs in the 6 game series, which is over 6 a game. Mule Suttles returns and hits 2 home runs. Lou Gehrig sets a World Series record, hitting .750!!! He added 2 home runs and 9 RBI's as the Phillies prove offense stands above pitching for now. ![]() |

1928-29 Offseason News and Notes
The White Sox pick legendary negro league catcher Josh Gibson 1st overall. He’s very well developed for almost 17 year old, and should make his debut this year. ![]() ![]() The St. Louis Cardinals have traded Babe Ruth! ![]() That’s right, the Babe has joined the greatest offensive team in history! The Phillies give up a few long shot lottery tickets for him. All 3 will probably play in the majors, but none of them have star potential. The Phillies now have Babe Ruth, Mule Suttles, Lou Gehrig, 2B Marty McManus, who since coming over from Boston in 1925, has almost 600 RBI’s, and C Earle Brucker, who I wrongly criticized a few years back. Brucker is hitting .328 during his 3 year MLB career. This offense doesn’t need any pitching what so ever to win games. If healthy, they will win the World Series next year, and have a legitimate shot at a dynasty. I didn’t mention him, but the Phillies also have Jimmie Foxx. The #2 pick of the 1923 draft. 5 years later, Mr. Foxx has had a tough time. As you can see, his skills and potential have eroded into a backup. He’s only 21 years old, but this declined happened a while ago. After his first year in AA, Foxx showed steep declines in contact and power. The fall continued for 2 more seasons, until it leveled off into what you see today. Obviously, the trade for Earl Brucker, which I called stupid at the time was a great move, as Foxx has not worked out. It’s a good thing I’m not running the Phillies! 3 Hall of Fame inductions this season. I decided to redo my HOF graphics, in order to come up with something that resembled the real life plaques. This is what I came up with, and will be using it going forward. I’m not very good at describing a players career in 1 short paragraph. ![]() ![]() 3 very deserving players. Each of them made an impact on their teams and the league in general. I think Eddie Collins was a very underrated player, who was overshadowed by bigger stars of his day. ![]() |

1929 Regular Season
Wow. The Phillies are trying to set records. They just acquired 6 time AL MVP Harry Heilmann! ![]() I’m having trouble comprehending how amazing this team’s offense will be. Harry Heilmann is still a pretty good player. He’s 34, but still a great hitter. Heilmann will play 2nd base, moving Marty McManus to 3rd base. WOW. Harry Heilmann On June 18th, the Yankees beat the Red Sox 12-2. Leading off the top of the 6th, Ty Cobb doubled off of Bill Foster. That hit was the 3959th hit of Cobb’s career, passing Ed Delahanty, and setting the record for most hits in a career. Cobb, whose 42, is a part time player this season. I can’t imagine him playing too much longer. Can he get to 4000? ![]() Philly has traded some offense for some pitching, but, as history has taught us, the Phillies don't really recognize good pitching. This is a terrible move! McManus is an all-star caliber infielder, and could play a good 3rd base with Heilmann at 2nd. The Phillies don’t agree, and let him go in an effort to improve theirterrible starting pitching. The problem is that they get Eddie Rommel back. Rommel sucks. His numbers at the time of the deal are horrible. He should fit right in!![]() Marty McManus As of August 1st, Lou Gehrig is having an amazing season. Not only is he .441, but he’s hit 47 home runs! His OBP is .510. He’s on pace to shatter teammate Babe Ruth’s home run record. Babe Ruth is currently the lead off man in Philadelphia. It’s working! He’s got a .474 OBP. Just amazing watching this Philly offense. On September 1st, Lou Gehrig has 58 home runs. It’s pretty much only a matter of time now. With 175 RBI’s, he’s got a shot at 200 too! Still though, the Phillies pitching is so bad, they are in 2nd place. On September 10th, in 8-4 loss in St. Louis, Lou Gehrig his his 61s home run of the season, with Babe Ruth on base. Lou Gehrig takes the crown and owns the single season home run record! The Philly offense really kicked in and they finish the season 24-8 to run away with the NL pennant. Lou Gehrig also finishes the season with 65 home runs. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lou Gehrig hits 65 home runs, knocks in 207 runs, while teammate Mule Suttles finishes with a pedestrian 200 RBI’s. Leadoff hitter Babe Ruth hits .384, with 47 home runs, and scores the 3rd most runs in history, 179. Ty Cobb finishes the season, and maybe his career with 4000 hits on the dot! |

1929 World Series
![]() Lou Gehrig, who was having a terrible season, came through in Game 6 for the Phillies. On the verge of losing the whole series, the Phillies trailed the Yankees 5-4, in the bottom of the 7th. With 2 on, and 2 out, Gehrig hit his first home run of the series, a 3 run shot, which gave the Phillies a 7-5 win, and sent the series to a deciding game 7. Game 7 Karl Adams, Phillies ace has had a tough series, but he’s easily the best choice for this game 7 assignment. The 38 year old won a career high 25 games this year, but had his highest ERA in 5 seasons, with a 4.22 mark. ![]() Danny MacFayden is a better pitcher then Adams, but he lacks the experience. He’s 24, and although he’s improved each of his 3 seasons in the majors, I don’t have much confidence he can shut down the Phillies offense in a game this big. Karl Adams was not ready to pitch. He gives up 4 first inning runs, and it could have been worse. Adams regains his composure, but gives up another 4 runs in the top of the ninth. Meanwhile, MacFayden dominates the most dominant offense in baseball. He allows 1 run, and 6 hits in 9 innings. I am wrong again. The Yankees win another championship! ![]() |

Phillies manager needs to be fired and Danny MCFadden will probably be a controversial HOF inductee simply because he beat the Phillies Murderer's Row |

1929-30 Offseason News and Notes
Some great names appear at the top of the 1929 draft. Hank Greenberg, who goes first to the Browns, followed by Johnny Mize and Luke Appling. Detroit with an absolute steal getting Dizzy Dean at 11. He’s an ace! ![]() ![]() The first Home Run King as been inducted into the Hall of Fame. He didn't really have the stats to get in, but this guy held all the home run records during the early years of baseball. That's enough in my books. ![]() ![]() |

1930 Regular Season
Just noticed Ty Cobb hasn’t retired yet. I really thought last year was it, but he’s still around, still platooning in the Red Sox outfield. This is Cobb’s 27th season!! 35 year old Babe Ruth has hit his 400th career Home Run. I’m thinking he’ll get to 500, and that number will be vulnerable, but will stand for some time. No one really has been a consistent giant in the home run category so far. Guys will hit 45, then come back with 19, then 36, then 21. So 400 is a lot! As we hit September, it looks like Ty Cobb’s career will finally end. Cobb suffered a strained hip muscle, which has a 5 month recovery time. At 43, with 27 years in the books, I can’t see Cobb, who got 198 at bats this year coming back. It just wouldn’t make sense. In what’s probably his final season, Cobb hit .313, with a .383 OBP, 27 RBI’s, and he only struck out 27 times. ![]() This is familar!! ![]() What a great rookie season from Josh Gibson. Baseball is all about offense these days. I say that, and then look at Bill Foster, who is heads and shoulders above any other pitcher in the AL! ![]() What a season from Satchel Paige. He dominates hitters and sets a new single season record, with 317 strikeouts. Just 14 more then Red Ames, who held the record with 303 K’s in 1905. |

![]() This is a rematch of last years World Series, and will be the 3rd time they have met in 4 years. The Powerful Phillies are led by 3 of the greatest hitters ever, and have now won 4 straight pennants. The Yankees are easily baseball’s best pitching outfit, and have an amazing defense. They have won both championship series’ against the Phillies, doing their best to prove pitching and defense is more important then hitting! |
