Lewis passed the biggest test of his career!

London Arena, London, United Kingdom, 2001-01-02

Mandatory WBC SHW Title Fight
Lennox Lewis 16-0-0 (12) UD12 Ike Ibeabuchi 16-2-1 (9)
On the first ever mandatory title fight of this Universe Lennox Lewis succesfuly defended his title for the fourth time on a great and violent fight against strong former champion Ike Ibeabuchi.
On an intense and competitive first round Ibeabuchi took some advantegge when he landed a great cross followed by a one-two combination that put Lewis on some trouble.
On the second round Lewis put some ice to the fight and controlled an actionless round from the outside.
On the third round a clean right cross by Lewis put Ibeabuchi on the canvas for a four count. The Nigerian got up and managed to stay out of risks for the rest of the round.
Lewis continued his momentum on the following round and easily won the stanza. Ibeabuchi seemed to be looking for one big punch and it came on the fifth round when with Lewis attacking and landing in good form Ibeabuchi connected a great combination in counter and dropped Lewis for a five count. It was the first time in Lewis whole career that he tasted the canvas.
Lewis got up and Ibeabuchi could connect a big cross that made Lewis stumble before the bell saved the englishman.
On the sixth round Lewis regained the control of the fight but both fighters was throwing and landing power blows.
Ibeabuchi was the dominator on the seventh round hurting Lewis with a pair of hooks and with a straight left Lewis finished the round with a cut outside his right eye.
The pair split the following two rounds Lewis won the eighth round and Ibeabuchi the ninth one.
But on the last three rounds Lewis showed how great he is and took the control of the fight winning rounds ten and elventh on a convincing way and finally dropping Ibeabuchi on the last round with an amazing right cross. After the Nigerian got up Lewis dropped him again with a body shot. Brave Ibeabuchi got up again and finished the fight on his feet. My scorecard was 115-109 for Lewis, the official scorecards were 115-108 114-109 and 114-110 all for the champion Lennox Lewis.

Great first defense for Wladimir!

Sporthalle Wansbek, Hamburg, Germany, 2001-01-03

WBA SHW CHAMPIONSHIP
Wladimir Klitschko 14-2-0 (13) UD12 Hasim Rahman 17-5-0 (12)
Great succesful first defense for Wlad Klitschko, Hasim Rahman was expected to be a difficult test for the champion but Klitschko passed it without major trouble.
The fight started with an action-packed competitve first round with both fighters landing good punches but with the champion edging the round.
Wlad dominated the second round on a one-sided form against a challenger that failed to find the target with his blows. On the third round Rahman did it better but the champion still won the stanza. A big hook by the Ucranian giant put Rahman on trouble near the end of the round. Wladimir also dominated the fourth round on a convincing way.
On rounds five and six Rahman tried a warm reaction winning both stanzas but after that Klitschko reagined the control of the fight winning the following five rounds on a dominant way, hurting Rahman several times. He also dropped Rahman on the ninth round with a great one-two combination.
On the last round Wlad secured his win when he dropped Rahman again with a shot under his ribcage near the end of the fight. Rahman got up and stayed on his feet for the remaining seconds of the fight.
My scorecard was 118-108 for Klitschko and the official scorecards were 118-108 (x2) and 118-109 for the champion.

Vitaly destroyed Golota for third title defense.

Rote Erde Stadium, Dortmund, Germany, 2001-01-05

IBF SHW CHAMPIONSHIP
Vitali Klitschko 18-0-0 (11) KO5 Andrew Golota 17-6-1 (11)
Vitaly destroyed the polish Andrew Golota to make his third succesful title defense. For Golota this is the second time that he failed to win a World Title.
Vitaly started the fight hurting Golota with a straight right follwed by a big uppercut and then he continued dominating the rest of the round.
Vitaly continued dominating on the second round, a great uppercut by the champion near the end of the stanza was the highlight of the round.
On the third round Vitaly dropped Golota two times the first with a big left-right combination and the second only a few seconds later with a terrible hook.
Golota finished this round on his feet but with a cut and looking totally spent.
On the fourth round Klitschko seemed to be winded and Golota had his only moment on the fight when he put the champion in “some trouble” with a right cross and again with a hook.
But Vitaly finished the figth on the fifth round dropping Golota with a crushing uppercut and after the polish got up dropping him again and for good with a wild overhand right that would have fallen a wall. At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 39-34 (x3) for Klitschko.
Now Vitaly had his mandatary title defense on April.

Easy second title defense for Bowe.

Miccosukee Resort and Gaming, Miami, FL, United States, 2001-01-06

WBO SHW CHAMPIONSHIP
Riddick Bowe 15-2-1 (9) KO7 Jameel McCline 11-8-2 (3)
Second succesful title defense for Bowe, on a totally onesided fight. The challenger McCline was not in the same league as the chmpion.
The first round was an actionless one and McCline could edge it but it was all he could do.
From the second round to the end of the fight Bowe used McCline as a punching bag.
McCline only performed a bit better on the fifth round in which he went punch per punch with the champion and could connect some good blows but was still totally outlanded and outpowered by Bowe.
Bowe hurt McCline several times with crosses , straight rights and combinations across the fight and finally the champion put McCline to sleep with a strong hook to the chin at the 1:34 mark of the seventh round.
At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 59-55 (x3) for Bowe.

Basilio new WBC MW champion!

Cintas Center, Cincinnati, OH, United States, 2001-01-08

WBC MW CHAMPIONSHIP
Carmen Basilio 14-2-2 (3) KO6 Stanley Ketchel 13-1-0 (10)
On a very huge upset Carmen Basilio dethroned WBC champion Stanley Ketchel.
As it was expected Ketchel started dominating the fight and winning the first round on a one-sided form. His uppercuts put Basilio into trouble a pair of times.
On the second round the fight continued in the same way with Ketchel in command and again hurting Basilio with his uppercuts.
On the third round the fight was more even but Ketchel still edged the round.
On the fourth round Ketchel regained the total control of the fight, his short hooks and his uppercuts were a nightmare for Basilio. With four rounds disputed Ketchel had a huge lead and Basilio looked beaten and with some swelling around his right eye.
On the fifth round Basilio tried a little reaction and he could edge his first round on the fight.
But finally on the following round from nowhere Basilio connected a quick and powerful barrage of punches and dropped a surprised Ketchel for the ten count.
At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 49-46 (x3) for Ketchel.

Also on the undercard:

SHW: Alexander Dimitrenko 9-5-1 (3) UD10 Kevin McBride 8-10-0 (5)
CW: Teofilo Stevenson 13-5-0 (8) Tech MD7 Floyd Patterson 16-2-0 (9)*
WW: Pete Ranzany 5-13-0 (1) TKO2 Michel Trabant 5-6-1 (1)
JMW: Lonnie Smith 8-6-1 (3) UD10 Doug DeWitt 6-11-2 (4)

*Second consecutive defeat for Patterson, Stevenson very near of his first title chance or at least an Eliminatory fight.

Nunn defeated Hagler and is champion for the second time!

Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, NV, United States, 2001-01-10

MANDATORY WBA MW TITLE FIGHT
Michael Nunn 15-2-0 (4) UD12 Marvin Hagler 16-0-1 (8)
Former WBO champion Michael Nunn shocked the boxing world beating the man who was considered the best middleweigth in the world: Marvin Hagler.
The champion had a very cold start of the fight allowing Nunn to totally control the first half of the fight, then Marvin tried to rally on the late rounds but Nunn could hold off the charge.
Nunn statrted the fight absolutely dominating the first round hurting Hagler with a pair of hooks and with a strong uppercut.
The second round was also more one-sided than the first , Hagler failed to land a single punch and allowed Nunn to connect huge combinations and hutrting him again this time with a right cross.
Nunn also won the third round, Hagler connected a good combination first to the body and then to the head but the challenger still outlanded him.
On the fourth round Nunn again was the best man on the ring, the highlight of the round was a brutal cross by the challenger.
Nunn continued his momentum winning the fifth round, on the sixth one Hagler tried to exchange blows with Nunn but the challenger outspeeded him and landed more punches.
On the seventh round the pair had a great exchenge of blows: Nunn landed a short hook and Hagler answered with a straight right both fighters seemed to be hurt. Again Nunn landed more than Hagler this round.
Finally Hagler won his first round on the eighth one, and continued his momentum having his best round on the ninth one in which he hurt Nunn with a pair of hooks and with some good combinations.
But at the middle stages of the tenth round and with the pair exchanging punches Nunn connected a big shot under Hagler’s ribcage and dropped him for a five count. Hagler got up and survived the rest of the round without major trouble.
On the last two rounds with great dignity Hagler tried to attack and he won both rounds but was very far from getting the KO that he needed to win. My scorecrd was 116-111 for Nunn and the official scorecards were 115-111 116-110 and 117-109 all for the new champion Michael Nunn.

Also on the undercard:

FW: Billy Plimmer 5-9-0 (2) UD10 Wayne McCullough 6-12-0 (1)
LHW: Glencoffe Johnson 9-4-4 (4) UD10 Bruno Girard 6-12-2 (2)
FLY: Luis Ibarra 4-11-1 (0) TKO5 Carlos Eluaiza 7-11-0 (2)
FLY: Zolani Petelo 7-6-0 (2) UD10 Hugo Cazares 7-11-0 (4)

Hopkins cruised for an easy fourth defense!

Kiel Auditorium, St. Louis, MO, United States, 2001-01-12

MANDATORY IBF TITLE FIGHT
Bernard Hopkins 13-2-1 (3) UD12 Billy Papke 13-4-0 (5)
Bernard Hopkins succesfuly defended his world title for the fourth time with a dominant unanimous decision win against the mandatory challenger Billy Papke. For Papke this is the second time he failed to win a world title.
The fight started with a very even first round with Hopkins edging it, the champion had also a good second round in which he hurt Papke with an uppercut near the end of the stanza.
The third round had back and forth action with the pair connecting some good punches but with the champion landing a bit more.
Hopkins continued his momentum winning the fourth round too.
On the fifth round Papke was for the first time in control of the fight but Hopkins regained the control of it winning the following two rounds.
On the eighth round Hopkins dropped Papke with a great hook. The challenger got up at six and could survive the rest of the round without major trouble.
On the following round Hopkins dropped Papke again with a wild overhand right and after the challenger got up Hopkins tried to finish the job but failed to do it.
On the tenth round Hopkins looked a bit tired and Papke had his best round also hurting Hopkins with a straight right but it was only a mirage becouse Hopkins regained the control of the fight on the last to rounds to secure a comfortable victory for him. My scorecard was 118-108 for Hopkins and the official scorecards were 117-109 (x2) and 118-108 for the champion Hopkins.

Also on the undercard:

FLY: Carlos Salazar 7-7-2 (1) KO1 Hector Chicagual 3-14-0 (1)
FLY: Sot Chitalada 9-5-2 (4) MDraw10 Omar Narvaez 10-4-1 (6)
HW: Muhammad Ali 13-1-0 (10) TKO6 John Ruiz 2-12-0 (1)
LW: Battling Nelson 13-8-1 (8) KO10 Billy Costello 4-12-2 (1)

Dempsey edged Fullmer!

Harringay Arena, London, United Kingdom, 2001-01-14

WBO MW CHAMPIONSHIP
Jack Dempsey NP 15-0-1 (4) SD12 Gene Fullmer 11-5-1 (3)
Jack Dempsey climbed form the canvas to score a very slim split decision victory over Gene Fullmer. Dempsey seemed to have done just enough to earn the decision.
The champion started the fight easily dominating the first two stanzas, Fullmer tried to react on the third round and edged the stanza but Dempsey regained the control on the following round. On this fourth round Fullmer failed to land a single punch.
Fullmer controlled the fifth round and on the sixth one he dropped the champion with a vicious combination. After Dempsey got up Fullmer threw bombs trying to finish the fight but he hadn’t enough power to do it.
On the seventh round the champion looked recovered and won the stanza on an easy way, Dempsey continued his momentum winning a bored eighth round too.
Fullmer edged the ninth round with a great right cross that was the only big punch of the round.
The challenger also had a big tenth round to put the result of the match into total doubt.
The last two rounds had very great action with both fighters landing several punches but with Dempsey outlanding Fullmer by a slim margin. The three judges gave this two rounds to Dempsey and this allowed him to win the fight. My scorecard was 114-113 for Dempsey. The offical scorecards were 114-113 (x2) for Dempsey and 114-113 for Fullmer.

Also on the undercard:

FLY: Rosendo Alvarez 3-12-1 (1) KO10 Danny Romero 10-5-0 (6)
LW: Jesse James Leija 5-10-0 (1) UD10 Roque Cassiani 0-17-0 (0)
MW: Shinji Takehara 9-9-1 (6) TKO1 Edison Miranda 9-14-0 (5)
SHW: David Price 8-7-0 (6) TKO6 Joe Hipp 3-11-0 (1)

Yes , especially in the way he did it. On the first seven rounds he really erased Hagler from the ring. And on the late rounds when Marvin tried to react Nunn put him on the canvas. Really amazing performance by Nunn!

WBC JMW CHAMPIONSHIP
Winky Wright 12-2-1 (4) TKO12 Nino Benvenuti 14-3-1 (6)
Ronald Wright passed a big test to defend his world title for the third time. It was the scond time that Nino Benvenutti failed to win a title fight , on his first chance he lost to Tony Ayala by MD12.
Wright won the first round without trouble he seemed to be too quick for the Italian challenger.
But Benvenutti found his pace on the second round winning it on a one-sided form.
The champion regained the control on the following round in which he cut Benvenutti under his right eye with a double left hook. Wright continued his momentum winning actionless rounds four and five.
On the sixth round a wicked combination to the head by Wright dropped the Italian. The challenger barely beat the count getting up at nine. After Benvenutti got up Wright battered him for the rest of the round but the Italian survived the storm.
After that Benvenutti tried a warm reaction edging the seventh round and convincingly winning the eighth one.
Wright edged the ninth round and on the tenth one he dropped Benvenutti for the second time with a one-two combination. Benevenutti got up and Wright didn’t follow up the action.
The eleventh round was an even one without a lot of action but on the last round Wright reopened Benvenutti’s cut with a series of jabs and the referee stopped the fight.
At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 106-100 (x2) and 107-99 for the champion Wright.

Also on the undercard:
