Defense Makes Chicago Start Offensive

The Chicago Orphans had their weakest start to a season in four or five years. The Orpahns faced a number of issues to start the season including some aging arms and some injuries. The largest handicap however by far was the shocking lack of defense shown by the team that cost them numerous games this month.

Chicago by far has the worst defense in the league and as many baseball experts say, the lack of fielding and fundamentals seems contagious. It is almost amazing that the team has been able to win 11 of their 26 games leaving them still time to try and right the ship in the field. The Orphans have made 105 errors in their 26 games meaning they average somewhere over four errors a game that even included a loss with 10 errors! In one game Amos Rusie allowed no earned runs and 13 unearned runs in a 15-3 loss to Brooklyn.

In the oddest stat oddity the Orphans are first in team ERA at 2.47 yet last in the division in runs allowed with 160.

Many are looking to new manager Steve King for answers to the defensive lapse. Some wonder if King has emphasized fundamentals to his team and if improvement is on the horizon or will a record fourth straight pennent go by the wayside. To his defense the infield had lost one of its most dependable gloves in second baseman Reddy Mack who is due back in about a week. Jocko Halligan the influencial and strong first baseman is also missing with an injury with a quad issue.

"Without Jocko in the infield we are really hurting" said manager King, "in fact without Reddy and Jocko the entire right side of the infield has been an issue and team's have taken advantage of it."

Due to Chicago's issues the entire division is up for grabs with 5.5 games seperating top to bottom and currently of all teams New York on top.

League Notes

• Former Orphan star Billy Globetrotter Earle will spend some time in the league office after he was suspended for four games. Earle had a confrontation with an umpire on the field and his comments after the game didnt help. Some say Earle is still unhappy about leaving Chicago for Cincinnati last season.
• Jimmy Barrett the 24 year old center fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies tore his labrum this month and will be out for at least four months if no the entire year. Barrett is an important player to the Phils and batted .363 last season in limited time.
• Willie Keeler who has gained a huge national following for his ability to hit has started the new season slower under his standards and as of May 1st his average was at .317. Still his Senators were sitting in first place to start May.

Hope For Fourth Pennant Fades

The disabled list remains highly populated for the Chicago Orphans as they continue to fight to stay in contention after a very difficult start to the season. Chicago isnt used to being at or near the bottom of the standings, however as the summer months come around the defending National League winners are 11.5 games out of first.

The two biggest culprits of the struggles appear to be inury and age or a strong combination of both. The team still has six key player on the disabled list and new faces are doing their best to fill the holes. Hughie Jennings and Reddy Mack are still not back and fully healthy which has left Herman Long and Sutter Sullivan in their place. Sam Thompson is also out for some time as is Patsy Donovon which makes the Chicago outfield lacking depth.

Father time may have begun to catch up to the likes of Thompson and starting pitcher Charlie Geggus. Geggus is 4-7 and has his ERA at 3.05, many around the league are also saying that Geggus pitches more now with his brain rather then his arm.

The Orphans also traded away Nig Cuppy this month as the pitcher was clearly frustrated after the loss of Al Spalding as manager and didnt get along with new man Stephen King. Cuppy was sent to Washington and played 9 years in Chicago winning 75 games but maybe never living up to his potential.

It is definately a time of change for the Orphans as many have already sai that their window of winning has closed. Manager Steve King has taken the brunt of the critisism in his first year and many are calling for his head in the middle of the season.

Around the League

• The Boston Beaneaters are back in first place in the National League but have lost one of their most important arms. George Cobb has a damaged elbow and will miss all of the 1899 season. Cobb is a former 21 game winner and was pitching well this season.
• The amatuer draft is upon us and news of a young kid from Pennsylvania has spread. Christy Mathewson is said to throw harder then any scout or player has ever seen before.
• The great Willie Keeler will miss six weeks with a bad ankle. Keeler has been a terror with the bat in his career but has often times suffered from injury.

The New Arms Of The Game

Styles and angles of the art of pitching have been developing over the last 30 years of the game but as history shows it has seemed that only an elite few have been able to dominate the mound at a given time. Names like Al Spalding and Cy Bentley made it all the way to the Hall of Fame while more recent names like Bob Black and Charlie Geggus have dominated over the last decade.

The speed of the pitch being thrown is now at the forefront of pitching development and over the past season or two this craft has been on the mind of many pro scouts and coaches. The faster the ball goes, the harder it is to hit of course. In order to throw fast the arm needs to be at its strongest so the youth of the sport are the ones that are perfecting the craft. It is the young arms that seem to be changing the face of pitching and taking the game to a new level, perfect as we approach the turn of the century.

Three young arms have taken the spotlight of the idea and one arm in particular, that just entered the league is being dubbed the prototype to many as the perfect power pitcher.

Rude Waddell - Cincinnati Reds

Waddell may be the most nutty superstar in the game as he arrives for games late and may have a better reputation at the saloon then he does on the mound. One thing is for sure however that hitters do not enjoy facing Rube and his stuff has sizzled in the league. Wadell has taken off this season at the age of 22 and has already won 14 games while striking out 86 hitters. His fearless style against even the best hitters fills ballyards accross the league and the Reds are true contenders this season. If he can stay focused, many feel Waddell is close to being the best pitcher in the game already.

Amos Rusie - Chicago Cubs
Although a little older at 28, Rusie has gotten better at throwing the speed ball and now makes a great combination of old control style pitching with new power. Rusie has already over 1500 strikeouts in his young career along with 179 wins, he is very capable of winning 300 games before all is said and done. Rusie was one of the first to introduce a pure speed ball that intimidated especially right handed hitters.

Christy Mathewson - Baltimore Orioles
Mathewson appears to be a new breed and his side arm style produces more speed to the plate then anyone ever thought possible. At 18 years of age he has created more buzz about his potential then in many years and fans come from all over to see his blazing arm. The Orioles are the team that will soon put him on display and although questions always remain, especially about health, many expect Matty to dominate the league almost as soon as he starts to throw. He has been dubbed the prototype of the new style to throw the ball. The reserved young lad is said to be taking the pressure in stride and his calm demenour is quite a contrast from his whirlwind fireballs.

Orphans Pick Things Up In June

Predictions of their demise may be have been quite premature as the three time defending National League pennant winners are not prone to lay down and die. Chicago won 12 of 13 games and ended June 17-10 to keep them in the race although still a long way off. The 9.5 games behind the leaders is by no means something Chicago cant shoot for if they play their best baseball.

The team has started to get healthy again and young arm Jack Chesbro is back in the mix of the rotation as Charlie Geggus doesnt have the stamina anymore to throw every three of four games.

Chicago drafted catcher Jiggs Donahue in the draft this month with the 10th overall pick. Donahue is a talent the team didnt want to pass on even though they have a good amount of talent at the position.

League Notes

• Excitement in Cincinnati for the success of the Reds is the story so far this season. Enigmatic young star Rube Waddell is on pace to win 27 games but the Reds also drafted another young arm that could make the rotation even better. Dummy Taylor from Oskaloosa Iowa will be joining the team soon as the 3rd pick in the amatuer draft.
• Out with the old and in wiht the new. Reds starter Charlie Buffington announced he will retire at the end of the season as the 38 year old has given way to younger arms. Buffington has had quite a career winning 226 games to this point.
• Ben Sanders of the Baltimore Orioles won his 200th game this week being the first to do so in an Oriole jersey. Sanders 201-199 in his career and has a good 2.99 ERA.
• New York and Cleveland made a deal as the Spiders traded Jake Stenzel, a .329 career hitter, to the New York Giants in exchange for solid starting pitcher Danny Friend. The Giants are trying to find support in their lineup for center fielder Honus Wagner.

Tough McGraw Wont Let Orphans Quit

Everyone knows that first year manager Steve King in the man in the hot seat and in charge of the Chicago Orphans. Those closer to the team however have a diffrent view and the most influencial and prominant figuire in the dugout is the load and intimidating personality of third baseman John McGraw.

"Mugsy" as they call him, is constantly yapping at his players and coaches througout the nine innings of a game and beyond, even yelling at his manager when things dont go his way. Still, even with McGraw being so outspoken, the team seems to respond well to his personality and respect him the more. Not since Cap Anson has the team seen such an important player who lead his mates so obviously.

At only 26 years old McGraw joined the Orphans before last season and has made his mark across the league. McGraw is a hard nosed player and believes the game should be played with blood on your sleeve and dirt in your cap.

He can stand behind his words for no other reason other then the example he provides on the field and the results that he brings. McGraw is second in the league with a .371 average but his on base percentage is an outrageous .507. McGraw leads the league in steals and walks and has scored 81 runs on the season. He is hands down one of the best hitters in the national league even if he doesnt have the most obvious talent.

"He is a perfectionist" says Fred Clarke of his teamate, "If any of us make a mistake Mugs is telling us about it, but we think he should so that we are accountable."

The Orphans are still in the race after a 12-12 June. They are still only 8.5 games out of first place but have only two months to make it all up.

• A trade this month between Louisville and Cincinnati and both teams try and make a run at the pennant. Kip Selbach is sent to the Colonels along with his .286 average, while Mike Morrison goes to the Reds. Morrison is a starting pitcher solid starter with a 12-10 record this season.
• Buck Freeman keeps his star shining as he went 5-7 against the Cleveland Spiders. The Boston American player leads the league with 12 home runs and has a .343 average.
• Star rookie draft choice Christy Mathewson has yet to sign with the Baltimore Orioles who currently reside in last place of the Western Division.

Young Nap Leads Dynamic Perfectos

Memories is all the city of St. Louis has about winning baseball as the old Brown Stockings of the 1880's was the last time the city had a winner. The old Browns won five pennants and two world championships lead by Lip Pike and Bill Stearns.

Since 1881 however the city has won nothing and finally this year the St. Louis team that is called the Perfectos, have the best record in baseball going into September and are closing in on a pennant. St. Louis is not a shoe in for the top spot but their six game lead over Boston is a good bet going forward.

The team definately has its star in 24 year old Nap Lajoie. Nap is a natural at the game and is batting .333 in his fifth big league season. Lajoie has played an excellent second base and has driven in 101 runs already to lead the league. The young star is also a charasmatic leader that has brought the best out of many of his teamates to get the most out of them. One such mate is Bill Lange who is better then Lajoie in many stats including his .374 league average. The two men love to hit and are two of the most productive hitting duos anyone remembers.

A St. Louis looks to close things out, in the Western League the Baltimore Orioles are trying their best not to jinx their impressive season. The Orioles are four games up on the Cleveland Spiders. The Orioles havent won anything since 1885 and the likes of Mike Donlin are leading the charge thus far as is their young star Christy Mathewson who is looking like he is worth the hype in his rookie season.

A dramatic September and the race to the pennant awaits.

Black Takes Top Spot



Boston is as expected fighting through another pennant race and part of the mix once again is the 36 year old Bob Black. Beyond helping his team win, Black has begun to rewrite much of the record book and he reached a giant acomplishment this month in his 15th season.

Black won his 378th game and he is now number one on the alltime list passing former teamate Bill Sweeney in the process. Black is also the winningest pitcher of all time percentage wise with a .657 winning rate. Black also has the most shutouts in a career at 45 and of course leads in strikeouts all time with 3450.

"Its like a legend takes the mound everytime he goes and pitches." says his catcher Kitty Bransfield.

For Two Cities, The Wait Is Over

Major League baseball has been stung by a lack of even competition over the past few years but the final year of the century has proved to ressurect two old baseball towns that have hope again. Many point to the reserve clause that prevents the richest teams from always buying the best players, as a great factor in these turn of events. For the first time in nine years neither Boston or Chicago are playing in the Worlds Series.

In St. Louis the newly named Perfectos were in fact almost perfect as they won 91 games, most in the league. Bill "Little Eva" Lang had a season for the ages winning the batting title in the league at .374 and driving in 123 runs. The team also had four 20 game winners with Jay Hughes pacing the way with 25 wins. All of this along with the contribution of one of the best all around players in the game, Nap Lajoie, have made this team one that the city loves and that the National League can be proud of.

In Baltimore it is all about the pitching they can throw at an opponent. Baltimore almost let their lead slip and had to win 3 of 4 against the A's to end the season, including a 5-1 win on the last day, to hold off Cleveland for the pennant by one game. Young rookie Christy Mathewson threw the complete game win to clinch the pennant and showed true rare poise for such a yoiung arm. Mathewson was one of three very strong starters including Ben Sanders and Bill Fagan. The Orioles lead all of baseball with a 2.73 ERA.

Unfortunately as the World Series is set to begin, one of the most popular stars will miss the series. St. Louis star Nap Lajoie strained his hamstring in the final week of the season and has been ruled out for the championship.

"Nap is the player that when he started here with us helped us believe that were could get to this point." said manager Frad Crane, "we will play to win it for him."

In any case baseball can enjoy a new flavor to the World Series and a new champion will quench the thirst of one of two starving cities.

Orphans Suffer Losing Season

For the first time in six seasons the Chicago Orphans will end the year with a losing record. The Orphans also end their streak of three straight pennants and seem to have a number of questions moving forward.

To make matters worse the Orphans for the first time finished with a worse record then their crosstown rival White Sox who finished at 77-77.

First year manager Steve King didnt exactly impress in replacing the legend of Al Spalding and many wonder if King will be brought back for the new season. Stars like Sam Thompson and Charlie Geggus are also showing their age and their roles moving forward are also in issue.

On the posotive side the Orphans had fine seasons from Fred Clarke who drove in 120 runs and John McGraw who batted .367 and is still a major force in the game.

Thanks for following and thats a great question about Bresnahan. Washington drafted him at which point somehow changed him to a starting pitcher. I traded for him and gave him a try on the mound and he did quite well with a 2.71 ERA and 11 wins.

He is still listed as a catcher but now is part of my rotation. In reality Bresnahan did pitch in nine games going 4-1. Although I am not sure how I will use him in the future, it is just another twist in the game that I love and a change to history in a what might have been scenario.

Baltimore Captures World Title

The Baltimore Orioles won their third all time World Championship and their first in 20 years in what was the final World Series of the 19th century. A great series transpired as the Orioles outlasted the S. Louis Perfectos in six games. The hero of the series was Emmett Heidrick who batted .500 in the series and set the table at the top of the order for the likes of Mike Donlin and Bill Joyce.

The darling however was rookie Christy Mathewson who at the age of 19 won two World Series games and earned the adoration of the fans and teamates for his maturity at such a young age.

The Orioles who won only 59 games last year had the greatest turnaround in baseball history to become champions in their thirsty and worthy city.

A three run bottom of the 7th is the diffrence as the Orioles take a three games to one lead behind Ben Sanders. Emmett Heidrick has a two run triple and then would later score in the decisive 7th. The Orioles are one win away from their title.

The Perfectos force the series back to the midwest with a tight win. With the tying run on third and the winning run on second Bill Joyce cant come through for the home team in the 9th. Bert Myers had a two run triple in the 2nd inning that gave Hughes a lead he wouldnt let go.

Still a six run 5th inning keeps the Orioles in the lead for good and down two runs in the 9th with the winning runs on the bases, Frank Meinke closed the door and the Orioles celebrated their title.

A NEW CENTURY OF BASEBALL

The world celebrates the promise and hope of the 20th century as new creations like moving pictures and electricity have created unthinkable excitment. Among the new world that is emerging for modern society is the continual grow and popularity of the game of baseball. Close to 30 years since the National League started, the game is now a fixture of the Amercian city and culture.

In Chicago the National League side still known as the Orphans have won nine pennants and are still respected as one of the best franchises in the game. Chicago has taken home two championships but fans have wanted much more. The team also featured what was likely one of the best stars and players of the century in Cap Anson, who is still the only man to have over 3000 hits.

The century ended in a slide for the Orphans as their crosstown rivals, the White Sox, are beginning to finally show signs of life. True competition for fans accross the city should only make the teams better, the Orphans however are still the most followed club in the city.

Steve King has been retained as manager but no doubt the pressure is high for him. King was an oroginal player of the franchise but the front office and fans will not tolerate another losing season. Jack Chesbro is back and healthy as is now the ace of the team and staff, Chesbro has excellent stuff on the mound and is expected to be among a new set of stars in the league.

Roger Bresnahan is also making a change as he is leaving his pitching job and wants to be a fulltime hitter. The problem is that the Orpans lineup is stacked, so finding playing time could be a problem, rumors of a deal could be in the works.

Speaking of deals, all through the winter there were rumors that New York was asking for the services of John McGraw. The Giants were said to go as far as offering their star Honus Wager in hopes of getting McGraw, none of these reports have of course been comfirmed.

Baseball is as healthy as ever as stars like Christy Mathewson, Cy Ypung, Nap Lajoie and Bill Lang seem to take over for fading stars like Dan Brouthers, Sam Thompson, and Bob Black.

League Notes

• The Lousiville Colonels have moved to Milwaukee and will be known as the Brewers. This is the second tme that this franchise has moved and ownership feel they have a better situation in Wisconsin. The Colonels won a championship in Louisville back in 1891.
• The "Old Fox" Clark Griffith will miss four months of action with an arm issue. The champion Orioles are deep in pitching but Griffith was an inning eater with 303 thrown last season which may have lead to his issues.
• Dan Brouthers at the age of 41 continues his quest to get to 3000 hits if he can stay healthy. Brouthers is in shape for the Pirates this season and is sitting on 2885 hits.

Blockbuster Trade Shocks Orphans

After a rough April and a weak start of the new season the Chicago Orphans started to feel the frustration of their reality. The Orphans ended the month 9-15 and promptly turned their team over by trading their best player for a young talent that hasnt lived up to his hype. The move in Chicago is seen by some as a white flag move, with the team headed for hard times.

John Mcgraw is by all estimation the best player in the National League with his defensive skill and ability to get on base. More then this, McGraw is one of the smartest players in the game and always knows how to get his team in a spot to win. McGraw is a career .336 hitter but even more has a .463 on base percentage with 399 steals.

McGraw was dealt to the New York Giants for talented short stop Honus Wagner. McGraw was a fan favorite and would give his right arm to win a game, Wagner however has a different reputation. The young short stop at 26 years old came into New York with a savior label that he just couldnt live up to. The Giants didnt win and Wagner, although a good player, is only batting .327 in his career and really doesnt get on base or steal bases. Wagner by some is considered to be a bust, and to trade him for a player like McGraw has the Windy City really wondering.

Of course there is another layer to the story as McGraw was having a terrible 1900 season batting only .238 to start the season. Some say it was obvious that McGraw had given up playing for manager Steve King. Reports also came in that McGraw had a tussle or two with the manager and did not respect him. There is no doubt that McGraw wanted the job and thought he could do a much better job with the club in charge.

Regardless of why or when, the deal has been made and Wagner comes to Chicago with many questions and huge shoes to fill.

"Im happy for a new start" said the new Chicago man, "we have more talent here then we did in New York"

The numbers say otherwise as the Giants are 16-8 and in much better position then the Orphans.

• Steve Brodie the star of the Brooklyn Superbas will miss six weeks of action as he fell on his shoulder making a catch. The star is a .325 career hitter.
• Big Ed Delahanty has played his entire career for the Boston Beaneaters and this month notched his 2000th hit. Delahanty is a .339 career hitter and is the 9th man to reach the mark.
• The league did not vote a single player into the Hall of Fame this season. The committee at Cooperstown want to make the requirements difficult in order to make the members only the best of the best. Three players are still the only ones enshrined in the leagues 30 year history.

A Tall Tachtician To Calm Chicago Storm

Facing utter turmoil and among their worst starts in franchise history, the Chicago front office gave up on Steve King as manager and made swift change to a team that sits 19 games out after two months of the season.

Constant bickering in the dugout and a lack of regard or respect for their field general lead to discontent and losing for the Orphans. Player obviously had stopped playing hard and especially those close to the departed John McGraw were said to be loafing their play. Gambling allegations have also surfaced to explain the poor play. Among all of this, the front office ended the managerial job of Steve King, who is the only Chicago manager to leave the team with a losing record.

Few men could come in and calm this storm, so the club looked for a respected and calm leader, who emphasizes fair play and integrity. The man for the job is 37 year old Connie Mack, a legend in the New England area and a gentleman worthy of respect.

Mack was not much of a ballplayer and played six seasons in Louisville as a catcher, his knowledge however of the game is well known through the league. Mack was a bench coach for St. Louis over the past few seasons, but was now itching for a chance to take control of a team on his own.

Mack managed his first game for the Orphans on May 18th and promptly ended a three game losing streak to win two in a row. Mack was said to have met with the biggest stars of the team to set his expectations but surely the upcoming season will be a long hard one with the team already mired close to the cellar of the National League.

In another blockbuster trade the Orphans traded one of their youngest stars. Frank Chance was dealt to Boston for 31 year old Jesse Burkett. Chance was dealt it is said for his dicontent as he was one of the closest friends to McGraw. The Orphans will give the catching reigns to former pitcher turned catcher, Roger Bresnahan.

Young talent Honus Wagner appears to be very happy being out of the spotlight in New York. Wagner has batted .388 since coming to the team last month and has driven in 29 runs along with two home runs.

Mack is said to love the hardnosed shortstop and is expected to build aroudn the player along with stars like Fred Clarke. The 1900 season however does already appear to be lost.

The amatuer draft is next month with the club having the 7th overall pick. Pitching is on the mind of the club it would appear, as Jack Chebro suffered another significant injury this month and cant seem to stay healthy.

Madness in New York

In contrast to Chicago, the thngs in New York have hyped themselves to new heights. The Polo Grounds that was recently expanded is seeing record crowds as the local Giants look for their first pennant leading the National League.

The Giants found the perfect man for the job of leading the team in John McGraw. McGraw brings a fight to a team that has been dormant for so long, the second baseman is batting .406 since getting to the big apple and is said to love the limelight.

McGraw a .338 career hitter

Young star Ed Murphy is also the center of attention as the rookie is 4-0 on the mound and appears to be headed as the ace of the staff.

The Giants however have been in this spot before, leading the league for most of the season only to lose out in 1890 by two games to their rivals from Brooklyn.

• "Honest" John Anderson is a good all around guy but his efforts as a ballplayer are now over. Anderson tore is labrum and will not continue his career. Anderson was a .304 career hitter and had his best seasons with Brooklyn.
• Jack Jones won his 250th game for the Boston Amercians. Jones has his best days behind him and is no longer a starter but a specialist for his team.
• Rumor has it that Willie Keeler, the great star of the Washington club has lost a step. Keeler is having a hard time with the media as the .375 career hitter is only hitting .310 this season. Keeler hit .423 in 1894.

"He Has A Great Mind For the Game"

Chicago Orphans owner James Hart had to take a moment this month at have a sigh of relief after June seemed to settle his ballclub a bit following the first two months of the season. The Orphans, behind new manager Connie Mack played a winning month of baseball and prompted very posotive responses for the new Chicago leader; one Chicago paper boldly announce that the team "Were Orphans No More" due to the Mack culture that has taken over the club.

With a long list of discontented players, Mack met with all of them and explained their role while focusing on the game on the field. Sam Thompson for instance announced this will be his final season earlier this month, realizing that the team respected him but his best days were behind him.

Thompson to retire

"He made me understand the direction this team is going in which is younger" said Thompson, "I dont feel bad about that and Mr. Mack made me make up my mind. He has a natural ability to communicate and a natural mind for the game."

Charlie Geggus has also been lauding at the work the Mack has done with the team. Geggus was frustrated at the start of the season at his role with the team but the 38 year old legend revitalized things in June and actually won pitcher of the month awards going 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA. Geggus hadnt won that award in over two seasons.

The culmination of the month came at the end when the first place New York Giants came to Chicago lead buy their vocal former Orphan player John MCGraw. McGraw jawwed with Chicago players and fans for the duration of the three game series but the Orphans kept their heads and played some of their best baseball of the season. Chicago took two out of three from the Giants winning their two games by a margin of 14-1.

The Orphans also took a big part in the annual amatuer draft this month. The team took as its first pitch a young pitcher, 24 year old Eddie Plank for Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Plank is a good young arm and the team is in search of a good ace as Jack Chesbro is once again hurt for the long term and cant seem to stay healthy despite having one of the best fastball's in the league.

• John Skopec P

The scouts are saying the Orphans had a good draft and building for the future is the right way to build up this storied franchise.

Reds Say 'Not So Fast'

Anticipation in New York City over their first pennant again may have been greatly exaggerated. The Cincinnati Reds lead by Rude Waddell who has established himself among the elite of the league, have caught the Giants at the end of the month and both teams share a piece of first place.

Waddell is 16-4 with a 1.60 ERA and is unhittable at times with his electric movement on the baseball. Of course Rube is just as well known for his antics off the field, but the 23 year old has the proud Reds looking as strong as ever. Coupled with the hitting exploits of Chick Stahl the Reds in many people's eyes are better then the hyped Giants.

The Giants went 8-17 in June and the pressure may be getting to them all over again. The pitching remains among the best in the league but getting the big hits and staying disciplined will be a key going forward.

Not to be completely forgotten the Brooklyn Superbas are only four games out of the race as Dummy Hoy is batting a career best .376.

• Bug Holliday was traded out of last place Pittsburgh for almost nothing showing that the last place Pirates are looking for an overhaul. The outfielder was sent to the Phillies for one minor league arm.
• Speaking of the Pirates, they had the top pick in the draf and chose starting pitcher Doc White. The second pick went to the Milwuakee Brewers who also chose a pitcher, Bob Wicker.

Detroit Eyes A Winner

With much excitement about the invention of the automobile starting to revolutionalize the way people are thinking of the future, the city of Detroit finally after 10 years has a team it can be proud of again. The Tigers have not finished better then third since their one title in 1890 and the risk by management to create a winner is paying off. The Tigers have lead since early April and have an 9 game lead in the American League over the Boston Americans.

Bobby Wallace

The leader of the offense in Detroit has quite a story of his own. Bobby Wallace came out of Pittsburgh as a pitcher and spent his first seasons in the game as a pitcher. Wallace actually won 50 major league games including 20 in 1896 for Detroit. The team however noticed that Wallace had a great eye for hitting and in 1897 he became the team's fulltime shortstop. Wallace has continued to improve and has hit .366 this season which is now leading the league.

Cy Young

On the pitching side of the team the story revolves around Cy Young. Young played seven years in Cincinnati but by a large part hadnt lived up to his expectations. Once the Reds traded Young to the Tigers in 1897, the right hander went from good to great and became among the top pithers in the game. Young has won 78 games as a Tiger and this season is 18-9 and the leader of the staff. Ironically Young's old team is having quite a season as well, and may be good to go in the World Series as opposition.

These two unlikely stars are part of a core that is lead by Bill Boyd who is in his first season as manager. Boyd has changed the culture of the team and built a winner, and the city that is thriving in so many ways could not be any happier.

Still much work is left to be done however as the Tigers still have a eight game lead with alot of baseball still to play.

A Pennant Race?

Out of nowhere the Chicago Orphans are turning their season around. The Orphans are had an eyeopening month going 20-9 and glowing under the leadership of manager Connie Mack.

The Orphans are looking up at a very tight race for the pennant where seven teams are within 8 games of the lead. Chicago is only seven games back and has evened their record at 54-54.

Honus Wagner continues to lead the offense and many who questioned the trade for Wagner that sent away John McGraw, are now starting to think again.

• The Orphans did make a deal this month sending Patsy Donovan to the Philadelphia A's in exchange for Osee Schrekengost who is a catcher. "Schreck" will be used to fill in for Roger Bresnahan who will miss close to a month with an injury.
• Dummy Hoy will miss some time with a hamstring injury for the Brooklyn Superbas. Hoy is having maybe his best season hitting .377 but has not been healthy all season.

Brooklyn Steals Pennant

In a wide open and wild National League this season, a team of old that many did not have a spotlight on came away with the prize. The Brooklyn Superbas opened the new century in the best possible way winning a tight pennant race byt two games over Cincinnati and had many remembering their glory days of old.

Brooklyn of course was the best team in baseball in the 1880's winning five world championships and were lead by the likes of Dan Brouthers and Tim Keefe. Since 1890 however the burrow and team has been silenced and going into this season not many gave them a true fighting chance. The club floated around the middle of the standings up until midseason and it wasnt until August that they began to make their run. The Superbas went 21-8 in the month and passed every team in their path inlcuding the Reds and the Giants.

Dummy Hoy had a scorching month at the top of the teams order batting .369 for the season while Jason Tannehill won 20 games on the season including 6 in the month. Still there is no mega star on this team and fans love to call them the "bums" or one of their own.

"Every day it is someone new who comes through" says Cal McVey the manager. "When you play without pressure you seem to play better." With all the pressure on the crosstown New York team, the Superbas turned it on at the perfect time.

In New York it was another nightmare lost as the team still has not won a pennant in its 19 years of playing pro ball. Some are even asking for a new team in the big city, as this one is just full of heartache. The Giants went 14-15 in the final month and watched the player they traded away, Honus Wagner, win the 1900 batting title in Chicago.

The Reds wasted some great pitching and also remain in a drought with their only win in team history coming in 1883, a along time ago.

Awaiting the Brooklyn club are the Detroit Tigers who lead the Western League from start to finish. The Tigers had the best record in baseball with 83 wins and are the favorites behind Ben Wallace and Cy Young in the upcoming World Series.

Orphans End Strong With Pride

After a change of the guard at manager and a very slow start, the Chicago Orphans finished the year with a strong push and have many looking ahead with optimism to 1901. The Orphans ended at 17-12 for the month and only finished 5 games out of the top spot.

Honus Wagner made a claim this season as the best hitter in the game while Fred Clarke is still as consistent and good as ever. The Chicago ended first in the league in almost every offensive catagory including an average of .297 and 835 runs scored.

Calling it an end to his career and being true to his word is Sam Thompson who earned all the appreciation from the Chicago fans and baseball world. Thompson batted .336 for his career and won the batter of the year award on four different occasions.

And of course the unsung hero of it all was Connie Mack, the team manager that watched his team begin to believe in itself again. Mack has won the admiration of so many in the city already.

• Brooklyn will try and end a for year winning streak by non National League teams in the World Series.
• There is serious rumor around the game that a new profesional league is set to be established in the upcoming offseason.
• Dan Brouthers ended the season with 2999 hits, one hit shy of the 3000 mark. At 42 years old many wonder if Big Dan, a sure legend of the game, will ever bat to try and become the second man to reach 3000.
• At 20 years old, Christy Mathewson became the youngest pitcher in 20 years to win 20 games. Mathewson ended the year 21-8 with the Baltimore Orioles.
• Sam Crawford, the 20 year old outfielder of the Boston Beaneaters, should win rookie of the year after batting .334.

World Series Edition

Bums First Champs Of New Century

The history of the World Series more times then not has proven to be the charm for the underdog team and the team that was more battle tested during the regular season pennant run. In the first championship of the 20th century it was the Brooklyn Superbas who beat the favored Detroit Tigers in a good series for their fifth championship. Winning number five now means that no team in the history of the game was more championships then Brooklyn.

There were a number of standout players in this series win like Danny Green who batted .407 or Joe McGinnity who won two games. In the end it was manager Cal Mcvey who put his team over the top, Mcbey now is one of the few men who have won a title both as a player and a manger.

The Superbas made a statement in the opener winning in Detroit behind Pick Hawley. The Superbas beat Cy Young as the home team did not help their own cause by commiting four crucial errors. The win right off the bat shifted the feeling of this series.

World Series records fell as the Bums hit a record 23 hits and took game two of this series behind 14 runs. Bill Bradley was among the heroes as he went 4-5 with three RBI on the big offensive day. Tiger starter Ned Garvin who allowed 9 earned runs should have never gotten out of bed.

The Tigers save this game and make a series of things with an extra inning win. Jimmy Williams tripled in the 11th and Bobby Wallace did what he does best by driving in the go ahead run. Herb Goodal had a gamers effort going 11 innings for the win with it all on the line.

The legend of Cy Young grew alot more as the right hander pitched one of the best games a World Series has seen. Young pitched a complete game shutout to beat the Superbas and tie the series. Pink Hawley was almost just as good but a Jimmy Williams solo home run was the only run of this classic game.

The Superbas were not about to leave town without a win at home and Joe McGinnity made it happen. Pearce Chiles went 3-3 and drove in three runs as a four run third inning as Ned Garvin took another loss on the mound. Heading back to Detroit it did appear that it was still anyones series with the Tigers at home and Cy Young waiting for game seven.

A sloppy game in Detroit and the Tigers manage to lose all three of their games at home. a four run 9th inning by the Superbas break the Tigers back after they had the lead and the chance to force a game seven. Deacon McGuire had the big hit that broke a tie and sunk Tiger hearts. Representing the tying run, Jimmy Williams struck out against John Weyhing to end this series.
