All Time Greatest Tourney - Infinity Style

[Infinity]

As there are limited fighters from Ghana, I'll be doing this country in about 4 posts.

Heavyweights:

There are 2 fighters in this class.

Abraham Okine vs Joey Armstrong - Both men were easy to find as they had limited defensive skills. This made for exciting action and a close fight with Armstrong finally wearing Okine down and scoring the KO half way through the 11th! Armstrong was up 6-4, 5-4, 4-5 through 10. Armstrong moves on to the World Tourney.

Cruiserweight:

Tee Jay is the lone entrant at this class, thus is the automatic entry.

Light Heavyweights:

3 fighters vying for the Light Heavyweight division. Top seeded Prince Mama Mohammed recieves the 1st round bye.

Semi-Finals:

Al Allotey vs Victor Attivor - This was a slugfest from the start with Attivor controling the action throughout most of the fight. He scored 2 knockdowns early only to have Allotey come back and score one of his own. Both men suffered cuts that reopened in the 12th round, but Allotey's was by far the worse, and when it burst open the fight was stopped as Attivor celebrated his 12th round TKO on cuts!

Final:

Prince Mama Mohammed vs Victor Attivor - This was another entertaining slugfest with Mohammed scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 5th, and another in the 12th. The rounds system is the great equalizer however, and Attivor did much better than expected, leaving many close rounds. Most observers felt Mohammed pulled it out in the latter rounds (I had it 8-7 Mohammed, and our color commentator Bear had it 8-6 for Mohammed) The judges scored it 9-6 Attivor, 8-6 Mohammed and 9-5 for the upset winner Attivor! The crowd threw refuse into the arena as they were incensed at the decision, but none the less Attivor is the entrant for the World Tourney!

Middleweight:

Kofi Jantuah - Automatic Bid

Jr Middleweights:

We have 5 warriors for this division, so there will be a fight-in to set the field at 4.

Fight-In:

Anor Amissah vs George Best - Amissah and Best put on a good match though Amissah dominated throughout, scoring 4 knockdowns, nearly closing the right eye of Best as well as a cut over the right eye. Amissah suffered a cut on his right cheek that wasn't a factor. There were 3 rounds that were round of the year caliber! None the less I had Amissah winning 14-0 and Ian Lord had it 13-2. The judges scored the fight 14-0, 13-1, 14-0 for Amissah who moves into the Semi-Finals.

Semi-Finals:

Alfred Ankamah vs Anor Amissah - After a lackluster feeling out round Ankamah came out throwing bombs in the 2nd, landing at will until a powerful right cross laid Amissah out for the count!

Osumanu Adama vs Thomas Awinbono - Good sluggers battle that had Awinbono showing surprising skills until a brutal hook ended his night late in the 9th round. The score cards were 4-2, 5-1, 3-3 for Adama (I had it 3-3) through the first 8 rounds.

Final:

Alfred Ankamah vs Osumanu Adama - This was shaping up to be another barn-burner with both men standing toe to toe for most of the bout when Adama suffered a nasty gash on the bridge of his nose that ended the fight early in the 4th round for the TKO to send Ankamah to the World Tournament!

Welterweights:

We have 4 warriors in this class, including the great Ike Quartey.

Semi-Finals:

Ike Quartey vs Johnny Melfah - A scintillating performance against a very game but over matched Melfah culminated in 3 knockdowns and the TKO late in the 12th round. Even though I had Melfah well behind (10-1) he had several rounds that would have been enough against a lesser fighter! Quartey will move to the Final.

Joshua Clottey vs Ben Tackie - An amazing back and forth slug-fest that could have gone either way despite Tackie tasting the canvas on 2 separate occasions. He gave as good as he got throughout! I had it 8-7 Tackie, Ian Lord had it 8-6 for Clottey. The ones that mattered though, the judges scored it 8-6 Cottey, 8-7 Tackie and 8-7 Clottey! Clottey moves to the Final against the heavily favored Quartey.

Final:

Ike Quartey vs Joshua Clottey - Quartey came out and rocked Clottey early in the 1st round and dominated nearly having him out on his feet. Somehow Clottey survived the round, then came back in the 2nd and landed a hook flush that drove Quartey into the ropes! He then covered up and Clottey scored at will throughout the round! After both men took a breather in the 3rd, Clottey scored a knockdown in the 4th that nearly had Quartey out for the count! Quartey gamely pulled himself off the canvas and survived, only to score a knockdown of his own midway through the 5th that Clottey couldn't answer for the thrilling KO win! Quartey will move to the World Tourney where he's expected to be a force!

Jr Welterweights:

As there are 3 fighters in this bracket, top seeded Emmanuel Clottey will recieve the bye.

Semi-Final:

Abdullai Amidu vs Akwei Addo - Suprisingly entertaining slugfest between 2 lightly regarded fighters had Addo down 2 times, the final one in the 14th for the KO! I had it 8-5 for Amidu and our color commentator Andreas Raht had it 7-5. The judges had it 8-5, 8-5, 6-5 for Amidu.

Final:

Emmanuel Clottey vs Abdullai Amidu - A dominant performance by Clottey in this one as he had Amidu on his back 3 times before the referee mercifully stopped the brutality after Amidu recieved a horrific beating in both the 11th and the fatal 12th! Score it a 12 TKO on referee's decision. Ghana will send Clottey to the World Tournament.

Lightweights:

We have 5 lightweights vying for the berth. There will be a single fight-in bout.

Fight-In:

Kpakpo Allotey vs Ben Ankrah - Allotey won a very close decision by winning more of the close rounds where Ankrah had the bigger rounds. The Compu-Box #'s showed a different fight than the 8-7 9-5 8-7 decision for Allotey as he landed 366 of 1393 (26.3%) to 411 of 1304 (31.5%) for Ankrah. This was a prime example of the importance of rounds over statistics in the rounds system.

Semi-Finals:

Raymond Narh vs Kpakpo Allotey - Narh outworked Allotey to earn a 9-6, 8-7, 9-5 decision. It was that close despite Allotey only landing 14.9 of his punches, as when he was good, he was very good, but when he was bad he was very very bad.

Love Allotey vs Kimpo Amarfio - Faster hands, a better work ethic and more accuracy were the hallmarks of Allotey's 9-5, 9-5, 9-5 decision.

Final:

Raymond Narh vs Love Allotey - Narh scored 3 knockdowns and opened a wicked gash over the right eye of Allotey, then reopened it in the 10th for the TKO. Narh moves on to the World Tournament!

Jr Lightweight:

We have 5 fighters in the Jr Lightweight division, so will have a fight-in bout.

Fight-In:

Sam Akromah vs George Ayeh - Akromah used good defense & counter-punching to earn the 9-5, 8-6, 9-5 decision.

Semi-Finals:

Azumah Nelson vs Sam Akromah - Nelson simply overpowered Akromah, finally scoring a knockdown in the 7th round before the referee ended the carnage for the TKO.

James Armah vs Yakubu Amidu - Amidu scored a flash knockdown and kept the fight close from there, but Armah had the better skill set as he wins 8-6, 8-6, 9-5.

Final:

Azumah Nelson vs James Armah - Nelson suffered a broken nose in the 8th round and was sent out to finish off Armah as the doctor had nearly ended things due to the flow of claret. He scored a knockdown in the 9th and then a pair in the 10th when things were finally stopped to protect Armah from serious injury. Nelson was up 9-0 on all 3 cards and the Compu-Box #'s showed it all as nelson landed 366-784 punches to only 94-471 for Armah. Nelson moves on to the World Tournament where he's expected to be one of the division's dominant forces.

Featherweights:

We again have 5 warriors fighting, so there will be a fight-in.

Fight-In:

Joe Tetteh vs Dennis Adjei - After splitting an action packed first 4 rounds, Tetteh took control, opening a gash on the forehead of Adjei that kept reopening, causing the red stuff to flow directly into his eyes. The fight was stopped several times to have the physician take a look before it was finally ended in the 9th for the TKO.

Featherweights Continued:

Semi-Finals:

Davey Kotey vs Joe Tetteh - Tetteh was giving Kotey fits through the first 6 and half rounds until Kotey landed a series of brutal shots that forced the end of things late in the 7th for the Kotey TKO. The judges had it 3-3, 4-1 Kotey, 5-1 Tetteh through the 6th.

Roy Ankrah vs Floyd Robertson - Action bout that saw Ankrah score a knockdown early. Robertson fought his way back into it, but a cut on the outside of his right eyebrow was the determining factor, ending the fight in the 12th round and sending Ankrah to the Finals with a TKO. Ankrah was up 6-4, 3-6, 7-4 through the 11th round.

Final:

David Kotey vs Roy Ankrah - Ankrah tried to stand in there with Kotey in this one, and it paid off in the first 5 rounds as he gave as good as he recieved. In the 6th round however a nasty right hook put him down for the count, sending Kotey to the World Tournament!

Bantamweights:

There are 6 fighters in the Bantamweight division. The top 2 seeds, Joseph Agbeko and Alex Baba will recieve byes in the Quarter-Finals.

Quarter-Finals:

Steve Dotse vs Benny Lee - Simply a dominating performance by Dotse as he scored a knockdown in the 3rd, then cut his man over the right eyebrow then poured it on until the referee stepped in to end the bout for the 3rd round TKO.

Nana Konadu vs Ablorh Sowah - Konadu came in a 13-2 favorite and left shaking his head as he dropped a 7-5, 5-7, 7-4 decision to the suprising Sowah.

Semi-Finals:

Joseph Agbeko vs Ablorh Sowah - An absolutely dominating performance by Agbeko was cut short in the 13th when the cut suffered in the 9th reopened for a 3rd time to end the fight. Sowah, a 13-2 underdog moves into the final!

Alex Baba vs Steve Dotse - Despite 2 knockdowns, this was a very close fight until Baba put Dotse down for a 3rd and final time in the 12th round for the KO.

Final:


Alex Baba vs Ablorh Sowah - Baba and Sowah swapped knockdowns early then Baba went on a knockdown binge, scoring 4 more, the final one in the 14th round for the KO win. Sowah showed a lot of heart, as he was only behind 8-5 through the first 13 rounds. Baba moves to the World Tournament.

Jr. Flyweight:

Michael Ebo Danquah is the lone entrant, thus the one to make it to the World Tournament on an automatic entry.

Ghana will field a competative team, with 2 all time greats from this small country.

Wayne Braithwaite vs Troy Ross - Ross split the first 2 rounds with Braithwaite, scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 3rd round. In the 5th he scored yet another knockdown that Braithwait wasn't able to answer, sending Ross to the World Tournament!

Light Heavyweights:

Keith Bristol recieves the bid for the World Tourney.

Middleweights:

The automatic bid goes to Wayne Harris.

Jr. Middleweights:

We have 4 warriors for the Jr. Middleweight class.

Semi-Finals:

Andrew Lewis vs Reggie Ford - Lewis scored at will, but somehow Ford remained on his feet, though near the end of the 3rd round he looked like a drunken sailor in a squall. The referee stepped in to protect him from further damage. Score it a 3 TKO for Lewis.

Tony Marshall vs Kenny Bristol - Bristol used counterpunching to eek out the narrow upset split decision 7-6, 6-7, 9-4.

Final:

Andrew Lewis vs Kenny Bristol - Lewis was dominant until the 8th round when he walked into a Bristol cross for an 8 count. He got up and survived, then in the 9th round came out in a fury, scoring a pair of knockdowns of his own before the referee stepped in to protect Bristol with 1:01 left in the round. Call it a 9 TKO. Lewis moves into the finals.

Lennox Beckles vs Dillon Carew - Beckles suffered a gaping gash on the bridge of his nose in a close fight in the 6th round. The doctor determined that allowing the fight to continue wouldn't be in the best interests for the health of the favored Beckles, sending Carew into the World Tournament with a 6th rond TKO on cuts.

Jr. Welterweights:

3 fighters means that top seeded Lennox Blackmoore will recieve a 1st round bye.

Semi-Final:

Vivian Harris vs Terrence Alli - Harris suffered a cut under his right eye early on, and kept the pressure on Alli the rest of the way until the 5th round he started scoring over and over to force the referee to step in and save Alli.

Final:

Lennox Blackmoore vs Vivian Harris - Harris tried to box with Blackmoore instead of stalking, and he paid the price as Blackmore had the better hand speed, footwork and jab throughout to pick Harris apart. The judges scored it 10-4, 8-6, 11-3 for Blackmoore.

Semi-Final:

Allan Tanner vs Vincent Howard - Back and forth fight that saw Howard down 2 times, the final time for a dramatic 15th round KO win by Tanner! Tanner was up 8-4, 8-3, 7-5 but most observers felt it was much closer.

Final:

Cliff Anderson vs Allan Tanner - Anderson was dominating, nearly closing Tanner's left eye, and cutting the right eyebrow of Tanner's right orb before the fight was stopped on a blatant low blow by Tanner! Anderson moves to the World Tournament by way of a DQ in the 8th! Through 7 Anderson lead 4-3, 3-4, 6-1.

Featherweights:

Final:

Patrick Ford vs Gairy St. Clair - Ford won a lopsided, but far from easy decision against a tough St. Clair. Even though Ford won nearly every round, St. Clair helped to keep the fans on their feet throughout. He faded in the final 5 rounds being knocked down in the 13th. The scorecards were 13-1, 13-1, 10-3 for Ford who moves on to a well earned berth in the World Tourney.

Bantamweights:

Ritchie Tanner will recieve the automatic bid in the Bantamweight division.

Ray Anis receives the automatic berth as he had no challengers for the World Tournament.

Daniel Edouard vs Lonord Pierre - Edouard built up a big lead through the first 9 rounds only to have Pierre score his 2nd knockdown of the fight in the 10th round. Pierre had his man hurt, and capitalized, keeping on his man, scoring at will until the referee stepped in to end it!

Lajos Eros vs Ferenc Kristofcsak - Eros took the fight to Kristofcsak early and it paid off in the 2nd round when he opened a nasty gash right above the right eye that ended things with 1:22 left in the round for the TKO on cuts.

Cruiserweights:

Gyorgy Hidvegi recieves the automatic berth to the World Tournament.

Light Heavyweights:

Zsolt Erdei will be the entrant for Hungary at this weight.

Super Middleweights:

Karoly Balzsay vs Jozsef Nagy - After 2 lackluster rounds, Balzsay took control in the 3rd battering Nagy all over the ring before the referee ended things with 16 seconds left for the TKO. Balzsay moves to the World Tourney where he's expected to go deep into the field.

Middleweights:

Laszlo Papp vs Andras Galfi - After 2 feeling out rounds, both men went at it in the 3rd before Papp started to assert himself, taking control for the rest of the fight, scoring a knockdown in the 11, a pair in the 12th and another in the 13th enroute to a 13-1, 13-2, 13-1 drubbing of Galfi. Papp moves into the World Tournament where he's a darkhorse medal hopeful.

Jr Middleweights:

Mihaly Kotai vs Laszlo Buranyi - Buranyi did everything he could to keep this a boring fight. He moved, clinched yet countered when he was hit making it very hard for Kotai to mount a sustained offence though most of the fight. It went to the judges who scored it 7-8, 9-6, 8-7 for the upset winner Laszlo Buranyi! He moves on to the World Tournament.

Lightweights:

Laszlo Bognar recieves the automatic bid due to lack of competition.

Jr. Lightweights:

The entrant at Jr. Lightweight will be Janos Nagy.

Flyweight:

Robert Isaszegi will be the Flyweight entrant.

Chris John vs Samson El Nino - This was an extremely one sided affair with John controlling the action throughout. He scored a knockdown in the 13th, then in the 14th went in for the kill, battering El Nino senseless before the referee finally showed mercy and ended it for the TKO.

Mohammad Nurhuda vs Ilham Lahia - Nurhuda came in a 6-1 favorite, but a lackluster performance nearly cost him the bout. Lahia scored the lone knockdown in the 2nd round and made a fight out of it. It took the 15th round for Nurhuda to pull out the split decision by the score of 6-9, 8-7, 8-7.

Final:

Chris John vs Mohammad Nurhuda - John didn't lose a round in his drubbing of Nurhuda. There were several times it looked like the referee was going to stop it, but in the 9th round it took 3 knockdowns before Nurhuda was finally counted out for the KO! John moves on to the world tourney where he should be a factor.

Jr. Featherweights:

Ahmad Fandi is the lone entrant for this division.

Jr. Bantamweights:

Ellyas Pical vs Boy Aruan - Pical used constant pressure to wear Aruan down until in the 10th he scored a knockdown then kept the pressure on with pure killer instinct, battering Aruan until the referee had no choice but to end it. Pical earns the World Tournament berth.

Jr. Flyweights:

With 3 entrants at Jr. Flyweight, top seeded Anis Roga recieves the bye.

Semi-Final:

Vicky Tahumil vs Udin Baharudin - Back and forth fight that had things all even on most scorecards going into the final round. I had it 8-7 for the underdog Baharudin, but the judges scored it 8-7, 7-8, 9-6 for Tahumil who moves to the Final.

Final:

Anis Roga vs Vicky Tahumil - Roga built up a solid lead then did nothing for the final 5 rounds, allowing Tahumil to come from behind to steal the 7-4, 7-7 9-5 Majority Decision and the berth in the World Tournament.

Strawweights:

There are 8 warriors vying for this weight class entry.

Quarter-Finals:

Muhammad Rachman vs La Ode Zaenudin Basez - Rachman dominated through out but wasn't able to score the big punch until the 15th round. He then pummeled Basez until the referee had seen enough with 21 seconds left. Rachman was up 12-1, 13-1, 12-2 through 14.

Faisol Akbar vs Iwan Key - Most ringside observers felt that Akbar was the stronger boxer in this one, countering well throughout even though Key was the agressor for most of the bout. The judges scored it 5-7, 8-3, 10-4 for Akbar.

Husni Ray vs Marti Polii - Polii was cut in the 2nd round, knocked down in the 3rd round, the cut reopened in the 3rd and again in the fatal 4th when the doctor wisely called it a night for the badly injured Polii.

Nico Thomas vs Abrin Matta - Thomas was the 2-1 favorite, but Matta showed suprising power, scoring a knockdown early in the 7th round then shocking everyone with his finishing ability, scoring the KO late in the round!

Semi-Finals:

Muhammad Rachman vs Abrin Matta - Matta survived 3 knockdowns, but that's about the only good thing that could be said about his performance against the dominating Rachman. The judges scored it 12-3, 12-2, 12-2 for the victorious Rachman.

Faisol Akbar vs Husni Ray - Akbar came out strong early, dominating the fight and even breaking Ray's nose. Ray was patient however, and allowed Akbar to punch himself out then took over the latter half of the fight to pull out the 8-7, 7-8, 9-6 split decision.

Final:

Muhammad Rachman vs Husni Ray - Rachman pounded out a hard fought 15th round TKO against a tough Ray. Both men boxed well at times, stood in there for some thrilling rounds in the middle of the fight, but Rachman took over in the final 4 rounds, opening a cut in the 13th, reopening it in the 14th and again in the 15th when the doctor ordered the fight halted. Rachman is the Straweight entrant in the World Tournament with this hard fought win!

Iran's lone entrant will be Jr. Middleweight Mehrdud Takaloo.

With 20 contestants in the Heavyweight division, there will be 4 fight-in bouts to set the field at 16.

Fight-Ins:

John Scholes vs Con Coughlin - Scholes took the first 2 rounds though he lost a point due to low blows in the 2nd. In the 3rd he countered off Coughlin's cross with a violent hook that put Coughlin down for the count!

Jim Dunn vs Mike Morrissey - Dunn kept pressuring and leaning on Morrissey throughout, finally scoring the big KO punch early in the 14th round. Dunn was up 8-4, 11-2, 11-2 through 13.

Jem Roche vs Paddy Ryan - Roche was a 4-1 favorite, but he couldn't find an answer for the awkward style of Ryan. Ryan took over after the 1st round, scoring the lone knockdown in the 12th, then taking the final 2 rounds off to earn an 11-3, 10-3, 11-3 decision.

Steve Taylor vs Harvey de Cross - This was a pick-em fight, and it proved to be fairly even throughout, though de Cross was a bit more effective at times. It went to the judges who scored it 8-7, 8-6, 8-6 for de Cross.

Round 1:

Tom Sharkey vs Jim Dunn - Sharkey mauled Dunn, scoring a knockdown in the 1st round before ending things with a thunderous right hand in the 3rd round. The referee could have counted to 100 as Dunn showed no sign of movement for several minutes after he was knocked out.

Con O'Kelley vs Paddy Ryan - Ryan and O'Kelley put on an entertaining show as both men stood in there giving their best. Ryan came up short however when O'Kelley unleashed a brilliant combination that put Ryan out for the count in round 5!

Bartley Madden vs Harvey de Cross - de Cross looked like one of those punch clowns we used to play with as kids. The ones that kept getting up when knocked down. The 4th time he went down in the 7th was the end of things as he couldn't answer the count!

Jim Coffey vs John Scholes - Scholes gave Coffey all he could handle through the first 12 rounds, but faded in the final 3 as Coffey secured the decision 9-6, 10-5, 10-5.

Martin Rogan vs Matthew Curran - Rogan dominated Curran with 5 knockdowns enroute to an 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 decision.

Joe Coburn vs Colin Kenna - Kenna built up a big lead through 11 rounds then held on a hard charging Coburn to win an 8-6, 8-7, 8-7 decision.

Peter Maher vs Pat McGowan - Maher wasted little time, dispatching McGowan with a flurry of power punches half way through the 1st round!

Yankee Sullivan vs Kevin McBride - An accidental clash of heads in the 1st round caused a cut over McBride's left eye that tore open early in the 4th round for the Technical Draw. Rematch coming.

Rematch:

Yankee Sullivan vs Kevin McBride - Sullivan and McBride put on quite the performance as McBride kept pressure on the slicker Sullivan throughout, and Sullivan used a crisp jab and excellent counter punching to make things close.
