POST FIGHT - JACK DEMPSEY INTERVIEW

Hello again, this is Jersey Jim here with Jack Dempsey at ringside… I have just a few moments here. There’s a line of reporters waiting to ask questions.

JJ: Congratulations, man! Tonight you’ve permanently punched your way into boxing lore! You were the underdog so many times. What’s going through your mind right now?

JD: You know… I don’t know. I think I want to take a vacation somewhere or something.

JJ: The two of you hit each other with shots, my God, most of us couldn’t believe you guys were still standing by the 6th!

JD: Yeah, I know. I was thinkin’ about that myself a few times. Let me tell you, some guys are boxers, some are sluggers. I’m a fighter. As long as I’m standing and there’s another round, I still got a shot to knock out the SOB in front of me. I don’t care who he is or what he’s done to me.”

JJ: Well Jack, I had my money on you and a few times I thought you were done.

JD: Yeah, well, as long as I get up, I ain’t done. And I always get up.

JJ: Were you relieved when the doctor stopped the fight and it was finally over?

JD: Relieved? No. He was bleedin’ not me. I wanted to pound him through the floor. I figured I would have the opportunity to knock the hell out of him when blood started pouring into his good eye. But they stopped the fight before I could finish the job the way I would have liked to.

JJ: What’s next, Jack?

JD: Well, you know, I’d just like to be able to fight in some of the “Inside the Ropes” universes that are out there. You know, just give me a chance to show you what I can do. All these other fighters Louis, Jeffries, Johnson – I see those guys in the write-ups all the time. I feel left out sometimes.

But that’s okay, look at what I’ve done. I beat Ali, Marciano and Louis. And all these nice people have followed this tournament and I want to thank them for their support.

JJ: Thank you, Jack. That’s all we have time for… I see you when I see you!

JD: See you down the road, Jersey-Jim. Keep punching!

Great stuff, JJ. Dempsey features in my uni in one post where I indicated that he'd just been born the day before, so he should be making his appearance sometime around 2020 (universe time).

I don't have Dempsey in my Universe, either. But I think he'll make a good fit, though. I was curious, what does the NSW mean with Sydney Australia?

There is New South Wales with Sydney as the capital
Victoria with Melbourne as Capital
Queensland with Brisbane
Western Australia with Perth
South Australia with Adelaide
Austraslian Capital Territory with Canberra

A friend of mine sent me a bunch of roast beef sandwiches from Chicago (Portillo's) They're so good I can't stop eating them!

Excellent job, JJ! Nice write-ups. The interviews made it that much more personable. Enjoyed it through and through.....now if you could do one for the Middies you'd be my hero!!!.....

I thought about doing each of the divisions, eventually. The Light Heavyweights, Middleweights, Welterweights - there are great matchups down the line!

Mr. Portillo also owns a chain of restaurants now calling themselves Brown's (previously Brown's Chicken). WSCR, a local sport's talk radio station has Brown's as a sponser. One of the program host's, Mike Murphy, runs a contest for callers that he has dubbed "Where's the beef?" and the winner gets free beef samiches (a little Chicago vernacular) from Brown's.
WSCR also carries White Sox games and my car radio is pretty much there permantly. When I drive to the IBHOF inductions I can pick them up til I hit Cleveland. Localy these type of beef sandwiches are called Italian Beef Sandwiches. That is how they appear on the meus of greasy spoons and fast food joints. The Italian Beef is a unique Chicago cullinary contribution. Debates can get heated over favored seasonings. I prefer mine to be "hot" and that raises additional questions regarding the Gardinera that is applied. I'm pretty picky about my Italian beefs. I don't order from places whose seasonings suck (for me that means they taste entirely like black pepper) or whose Gardinera I don't like. There are too many joints around selling Italian beefs for me not to get what I like. Portillo's and Brown's are above average, but there are some smaller local places I prefer that are closer to my digs. When it come to Brown's I still think of them as Brown's Chicken, a KFC wanna be in my mind. Even with Mr. portillo now doing frequent TV shots for them I'm still living with the past I'd rather chew ground up glass than eat fast food chicken.

I'm fine with chicken if it is prepared at home or in chinese take out or even buritos. The fast food chicken places with the greasy breading i take a pass on. Prefer oven roasting to fried chicken and all that breading.

I agree completely. Roast chicken is one of the few things I actually can cook decently (thank God for popups) and with varying recipes, sometimes even a brining. Other than occasionally some Chesapeake Bay wings, I steer away from fried.

I guess those folks who weren't pulling for Dempsey had to eat some good old-fashioned crow!

I often travel back and forth between Jersey and Florida with family in both places. All Italians! And I've eatin' beef from sea to shining sea, and the Portillo's sets the mark as far as I'm concerned - no, the standard - by which all beef's shall now be weighed. Everything from the beef to the bread made me want to eat until I lost consciousness.

When it comes to chicken... I don't like it if it's too greasy. But you know, when you don't know how to describe the taste of something, the old standby is to say, "It tastes like chicken." So everyone needs to like chicken cooked one way other another. If not, half the things you've never tried - you'll never try .

One last thought about the beefs... you're absolutely right about the seasoning. The Portillo's seasoning doesn't taste like a bunch of pepper. The beef's don't have that "peppery taste" at all. I wonder why they don't expand all over the country? It's probably too much of a hassle and they're probably doing just fine with what they have.

I generally leave the prep and cooking of chicken to my wife. I'm not really skilled at preparing whole birds for cooking or disassembling the whole bird into parts. I'm better with other kitchen stuff.

Crow never seems to go out of style. I sort of wanted to see Louis win this tournament once he made the finals. But then, seeing Dempsey take a beating and still bounce back - I was pulling for Dempsey down the stretch.

Hey Everyone,

This tournament is being reenacted for TheBoxingMagazine.com. About half the first half of the tournament will stay as is for the sake of time. The last half will be reenacted for publicity purposes. The tournament and the results will be in eBook format (PDF). It will be downloadable from TheBoxingMagazine.com.

Basically, in this format, I can be as graphically "intense" as I want to be with any restrictions.

If anyone would like to submit any information, photos of fighters, interesting stories, etc. for the tournament, send me an email with the information. If it's used in the final publication, I'll make sure you get the credit for it .

Boxing popularity isn't as big as it used to be, but nevertheless, I'm going to publicize the event, the site, and TB to about 1200 different media outlets in radio, TV, Cable, Newspapers and Magazines throughout the USA. After that, Germany. And after that, the UK.

I'm really happy to be doing this. Here's why. When I was a kid, they always told me, "Do what you like and the money will follow." Then, as I got older, I told them what I wanted to do and they (just about everyone) said, "Oh, you can't make any money doing that!!"

I started publishing "How-To" booklets back in 1998. I've published about a dozen different titles like; "How To Repair Your Poor Credit Rating," "Car Buying Secrets," and many others. I wrote about stuff like that because it sold well via mailorder and then, online.

Then, I created courses on how to self publishing eBooks, courses, and all sorts of stuff. I even did seminars and wrote newsletters.

I still do on occasion.

But I never wrote about Boxing. That's because I had to pay the bills!! Now, finally, (God knows how many years after "Do what want" was first uttered) I get to write about boxing and the game the filled "all the gaps" in what was taking place in the real world of boxing.

When your a kid they tell you - you can do anything you set your mind to. When you're an adult, they tell you why "that'll never work."

Go figure.

My dream job growing up would have been to owned something like Ring Magazine. Next choice... maybe KO Magazine or World Boxing.

Now, it looks like I'll have to settle for TheBoxingMagazine.com. But when you really get right down to it, that's really not too bad after all.
