Anyone that wasn't a Leaf fan in Ontario isn't regarded all that highly. Especialyl if they follow one of their rivals (Detroit, Montreal, now Ottawa)

This is the moment I've been waiting for all summer. Finally something to root for in Pittsburgh again as the Pens open up their season against the Canes tonight. I predict Pens 12-1. (Okay maybe 4-1). Though, the Hurricanes seem to have always presented a problem for the Penguins. We were just 1-3 against them last season and were outscored 14-8 in those games. However, two of those losses came at the beginning of the season where the Pens were a very streaky team still trying to gel. Should be an interesting game none the less.

Well, duh. I was asking why it was particularly bad in the 70's in 80's, though.

Actualyl I'd say it's worse now. While the Laff Nation was pretty edgy (who wouldnt' be with a guy like Ballard running the team into the ground), nowdays it feels like it's gaining more of a fundementalism twist to it, which is pretty ugly.

I wonder if this was how Ranger fans were like before 1994.

I'd say that's not far off the mark. Leafs fans do have a way of deluding themselves as to how good the club actually is.

Personally, I'm going to enjoy watching them lose, just to be contrarian. Needless to say, I'm pleased with the start to the season.

I think he was speaking more to how terrible the Red Wings were.

From 1970 to 1983, the Wings had 16 head coaches...From the 73/74 season to the 87/88 year, they had a losing record in each season. Some were brutal - they had 16,17 and 19 win seasons in there as well.

The Leafs weren't great during that span, but they Red Wings were probably the worst team in the NHL.

It's odd to think now of the Red Wings and horrid in the same sentence, isn't it?

Jeff O'Niell was in Toronto.

The Saku Koivu injury was unfortunate, but it was an unintentional high stick, and not a goon move.

Besides, wasn't it Justin Williams? Intentional or not, that's why high sticking is forbidden.

Since there is so much Leaf love on this board </sarcasm>,

I thought i would share an off topic aside about a film I saw at the Calgary Film Festival (it played in Toronto too I think) called "Lets All Hate Toronto", the adventures of Mister Toronto as he goes from Canadian city to Canadian city trying to drum up support for a local "Toronto Appreciation Day". Needless to say, he is less than successful in this endeavor.

My favourite moment was when he is in Edmonton, during the OIlers Stanley Cup run and is walking down Whyte Ave (their main bar strip) wearing a Leafs shirt with "Gretzky" and "99" emblazoned on the back. I had to laugh out loud at his audacity for doing something so suicidal.

Anyways, it coems out on DVD this October and is highly recommended to any Toronto haters out there.

[/ off topic]

Yes, it was JW. I consider a "goon" somebody who has no real purpose other than to hurt people or stir up stuff, and my point was that this was not what happened.

Great effort by the Canes tonight, although Recchi ruined the shutout with a couple of minutes left in the game. It's wierd to watch the Pens skate with names like Staal, Whitney and Recchi on their sweaters.

Ward has looked good in both games. I hope he can keep it up, as we're on the road for the next 6 games.

Bad choice of words, what I meant was all my friends were leaf fans, and as a
Red Wings fan, and they were awful missing the playoffs 15 times in 17 years I
was constantly ridiculed, but who's laughing now with 3 cups in last 10 years.
