Rickie Weeks

The trajectory of Rickie Weeks’ baseball career is the hallmark of what Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were founded on, and what the HBCU All-Star Game attempted to provide – an opportunity for those overlooked. Not only did the event provide exposure, but it involved clinics and networking with Major League front-office employees. Weeks contributed as one of the coaches. “Rickie’s presence showed the kids that it’s possible to flourish in the game coming from an HBCU,” Wyche said. “A lot of them said Rickie’s the reason why they started playing.”

The challenges and possibilities for Weeks began by chance late in his senior year when a Cincinnati Reds cross-checker traveled to Florida to scout a prospect. But the scout was impressed enough by a different player – Weeks – to make a phone call to his friend, then-Southern baseball coach Roger Cador. “The scout said, ‘You better get on this guy, he’s real,’ ” said Cador, who was 913-597-1 over 33 years at Southern. That included 14 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles, 13 SWAC Coach of the Year awards, 12 30-win seasons and 11 NCAA tournament appearances.

“I hit a shot off the pitcher’s head in that game and ended up with a triple,” Weeks said. “After the scout made that call, the rest was history.”

That history involved Weeks signing with Southern late that summer. A historic college career would begin for a player who somehow slipped through the cracks except for one scout. Maybe Weeks was overlooked because of his size (5-foot-10, 170 pounds at the time) or that he hit in the middle of a lineup with future Major League players such as Felipe Lopez, who was drafted in 1998, two years before Weeks graduated from high school.

“I really don’t know why I only received one offer,” Weeks said. “I was a good kid, never got into trouble and I made good grades. But I do know when I went back home after my first year of college, an area scout told me every scout in the area got fired because no one turned my name in.” - andscape.com

He had a thinner face when he first came up and it widened by the time he was in Seattle. I tried to split the difference.

Milt Cuyler

Center field was a thin position for the Tigers in the 1990s, but Milt Cuyler led the team in games played, plate appearances, and innings at the center field position. He only spent one year as a full-time starter for the Tigers, but he was with the club for six seasons. Cuyler’s 2.8 WAR in the 1990s isn’t going turn any heads, but he represents the very best of players who spent more than two season’s worth of games in center field for the Tigers. He finished third in Rookie of the Year award voting in 1992 (his only full season of playing time) when he finished the year with 41 stolen bases and a .335 on-base percentage.

Cuyler had trouble with the bat after that (he never again got on base at even a .320 clip) and hit just .239/.304/.324 across 1,426 plate appearances with the Tigers. He was capable with the glove, however, with defensive value making up 2.5 of his 2.8 WAR. The Tigers released Cuyler following the 1995 season and spent the 1996 season with the Boston Red Sox. He would return to the major leagues for seven games with the Texas Rangers in 1998, his last appearance in the big leagues. - detroitjockcity.com Tigers All-Decade Team

He was a bit orange before. Redone upon request.

That special request will sound weird since there are so many photography of him available and I do FG since forever but I just can't do a FG of him I find satisfying so...

LansdowneSt could you please do a Carl Hubbell FG for me? Thanks...

Carl Hubbell

Hubbell, known as King Carl and The Meal Ticket, pitched for the New York Giants from 1928 to 1943. He had a 253-154 record and won 21 or more games for 5 straight seasons, starting in 1933. He pitched a then-record 46 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings in 1933, and was the National League’s most valuable player in 1936, when he won 26 games and lost only 6. The Giants, with Hubbell as their ace, won pennants in 1933, ’36 and ’37, and won the World Series in ’33, with Hubbell winning the first and fourth games against the Washington Senators.

However, Hubbell’s name will always be associated with the 1934 All-Star game, in which he struck out five future Hall of Fame hitters in a row. Charlie Gehringer had opened the game for the American League with a single. Heinie Manush walked. Hubbell was then faced with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, who combined to hit 115 home runs that year and 1,741 lifetime.

His catcher, Gabby Hartnett of the Chicago Cubs, went to the mound and told Hubbell: “Never mind the junk. Forget about being careful. Throw that screwball. It gets me out. It’ll get them out.” Hubbell promptly struck out Ruth, Gehrig and Foxx to end the inning, then opened the second by striking out Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. He had 2 strikes on Bill Dickey when the New York Yankees catcher singled, snapping the streak. Hubbell struck out the opposing pitcher, Lefty Gomez, to end the inning, and left after 3 innings with a 4-0 lead.

“I guess I won’t ever forget that ’34 game,” Hubbell recalled years later. “I’ve often been asked what I was throwing those fellows. Well, it’s a little complicated because I was throwing everything I knew how, including fastballs and curves, but the only thing they got a chance to hit was the screwball. I saw to that very carefully. It was the only thing they hadn’t seen, and I knew what they could do with the other stuff if I ever got it within range.”

Here's my go at him, AESP. I did smooth him a bit as the shadows and facial lines made him look too old on my first attempt. I tried to keep enough to give him some character though. The old one is over-smoothed and way too wide. Hope it works for ya.

That was the problem with each attempts I did... he looked like an old man.

Work great for me thanks! I was sure the current one was a template which is why I didn't want to use it (template should be use only for very bad FGs in my opinion).

While on the topic of dead white guys, has anyone a good version of Mickey Vernon that doesn't have him a Platinum member of the Marcus Hook Tanning Salon?

Mickey Vernon

In the 1940s and well into the 1950s, the premier first baseman in the American League was Mickey Vernon. On a daily basis, no other first sacker matched Vernon’s considerable ability as both a hitter and fielder. With a bat in his hands, Vernon’s classic left-handed stroke helped him win two batting titles, and he was regularly among the league leaders in a variety of offensive categories. In his 21 year career, he complied a .286 batting average, 1311 RBI’s and 2495 hits. He ended up having the same amount of RBI’s as Derek Jeter, yet the name Mickey Vernon is unknown to most. Vernon has been trying to get into the Hall of Fame for over 50 years and has yet to get the call to Cooperstown. In his first 16 years of eligibility, the highest vote total he ever got was 24%. The veterans' committee has also passed him up.

Vernon was such an accomplished hitter that Satchel Paige, the ageless wonder, once said: “If I was pitching and it was the ninth inning and we had a two-run lead with the bases loaded and Mickey Vernon was up, I’d walk him and pitch to the next man.” Said pitcher Tom Ferrick: “Mickey was a very intelligent hitter with a good stroke. When Mickey went up to the plate, he knew who was pitching and how to handle the guy. He didn’t just go up and swing indiscriminately. He was the kind of guy who always put the ball in play. That’s why he got so many hits.” Mickey was equally adept with the glove. Smooth, elegant, and graceful, he played first base as though he were performing an outdoor ballet. Few balls were hit his way that didn’t come to rest in his nearly flawless mitt. “He is the only man in baseball who could play first base in a tuxedo, appear perfectly comfortable, and never wrinkle his suit,” claimed Jack Dunn, an executive with the Baltimore Orioles. As outstanding a player as he was, perhaps Vernon’s greatest attribute was as one of baseball’s finest gentlemen. He was an upstanding citizen, a family man, kind, courteous, caring, unbiased, one who was neither loud, profane, nor mired in his own ego." - SABR & lindynews.com

Ah, sorry, AESP. I was working on it as you were posting. Anyway, here's mine for consideration. Boy was the one in the CUF pack orange!

No problem at all, yours always come with a great write up and mine sure don't.

For the orange I have a feeling many from that era were made based on baseball card drawing and not photography... just a guess but many of those cards are very orange tinted.

LansdowneSt could you do him? I ask since I know you have the necessary tools to remove teeth and it's the only color photo of that player I was able to find.

Dick Hahn

Catcher Dick Hahn played a single game for the Washington Senators on September 7th, 1940. He went 0 for 3. All told, he played nine years in the minors. We went on to serve in the Navy in WWII and retired to Florida where he owned the historic Island Store on Captiva until he passed in 1992 at the age of 76.

I took away the smile and worked with that and cross referenced it with a b&w photo where he wasn't smiling. Best I could but on a side by side I definitely like the new fg better than the old one.

Lastly, as an aside, if you had $200 free dollars in 2016, you could have bought his MLB contract at auction... https://www.albersheims.com/clark_gr...e-lot7876.aspx

Feels like having some fun LansdowneSt?

One I can't do in a satisfying way because the only photo of him I can find is quite bad... we never know maybe you could find a better picture of him.

Red Howell

Outfielder Red Howell spent seventeen active seasons in professional baseball from 1928 to 1944. He appeared in eleven games in the Major Leagues along with 2,120 games in the minor leagues. "Porky" as he was sometimes called, had one brief stay in the majors. After leading the International League in hitting in 1940 with a .359 average along with 29 home runs and 122 RBI in 152 games, Howell was drafted by the Cleveland Indians from the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1940 Rule V Draft. He spent his Major League time with the 1941 Indians from April 24 to May 26. Howell hit .286 in eleven games for the Indians in 1941, then was returned to Baltimore.

In 1931 the Hartford Senators leading hitter was 22-year-old Murray (Red ) Howell with a .329 average, 13 homers and 87 RBI, who was fourth in the Eastern League in batting. The previous year he had been the South Atlantic Association’s top slugger, hitting .340 with 25 home runs and 147 RBI in 142 games. Howell was one of ten 1931 Senators who were on the Brooklyn Dodgers 1932 spring training roster, but he never appeared in a regular season game. He was an excellent hitter, but had a reputation for being hard to handle and often out of shape. Red had a 17-year .326 minor league career average, with 2,509 hits that included 229 home runs, in 2,120 games. Howell stayed in the game through 1944 at the age of 35. He operated the Lonesome Pines Tourist Camp at Travelers Rest, SC. He died suddenly at the age of 41 at his home in Travelers Rest. - bRef Bullpen Wiki

I made the fg based on the newspaper clipping as I found the photo only after I was happy with the fg. So, I didn't do it over. I think it looks like both (which is always nice!). So, made upon request and yes, AESP, it was fun

LansdowneSt 6 November Supplemental Facegen Pack updated

Well, the World Series is over and I'm due to post another round of facegen updates via my Mediafire download site. Here it is via the link below (and my signature block link will also get you there). It's always the same link, I just swap the files out. Some of the 238 new MLB'ers and 17 MiLB'ers have had their facegen files posted on either this thread or on my personal thread. As for the rest, I just didn't have them time to do individual posts. Here are some examples of the new facegens plus the stats of where I stand on my checklist. More examples are on my thread if you like to see the before and afters.

Now for the pics and stats...

LansdowneSt sorry to bother you again... I know you're busy with your own work.

Could you do a no teeth FG for Chico Hernandez? The pictures are the best one I found (original and badly colorized with imagecolorizer online)? Thanks

BTW do you know a good free online picture colorizer website?
