Dick Schofield (Sr) 1953
I've been out of pocket for a few days, so let me resume uploading a backlog of Dexters and those '69 unknown photographer images.
After splitting the first 12 years of his career between the Cards and Pirates, Dick Schofield went on the grand tour - eight team changes in his last six. His third team of 1966 was the Dodgers and he was with them through the 1967 season. Dexter got him during spring training that year - he's pretty tough to find in L.A. gear. Steve D. Barber 1960
Like Schofield, Steve Barber went from early stability (indeed, he looked like he might be on a Hall of Fame trajectory as late as an injury in 1966) to desert wandering (seven teams in his last eight years, if you include the Cardinals, with whom he signed but for whom he never pitched).
The last year Barber maintained a spot in the rotation for all or most of a season was with the '68 Yankees - Dexter got him that spring. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 01:05 AM. |

Roger Nelson 1967
We've discussed his curious career before - but it began with the White Sox not only using him in critical spots during the crazy 1967 A.L. pennant race (with disastrous results) but being the Orioles' key to the trade when Baltimore returned Luis Aparicio to Chicago in the winter of '67-68.
Not a lot of good color images of him with any clubs, and this Dexter '67 White Sox shot is especially nice. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 01:06 AM. |

Doc Edwards 1962
Here's a find. This was among those 1969 images: the veteran catcher Doc Edwards in the uniform of the Phillies.
Edwards had caught for the Indians, A's, and Yankees from 1962-65 and then retired after four subsequent seasons in the minors to become a Phils' coach in 1970. But in June, Philadelphia had a catching crisis (they would ultimately go through five receivers, not one of whom started more than 44 games) and Edwards was activated. He wouldn't have worn the traditional script/pinstripes as an active player in 1970 (the Phillies phased in the stylized "P" logo early in the '70 season before Edwards was activated, but he did wear this old style as a coach) but given that this is only the second color photo I've seen of him in a Philadelphia uniform - who's complaining? Tony Conigliaro 1964
SABR has tweeted a link to an ebook on the Tony C Award, and in so doing has made public one of the few color images of Conig during his ill-dated comeback with the 1975 Red Sox.
This is - naturally - a Doug McWilliams image from the Hall of Fame library and though the background has been stripped out, it's still useful in filling a void. BTW this is the link to the SABR ebook SABR Digital Library: Overcoming Adversity: Baseball's Tony Conigliaro Award | Society for American Baseball Research |

photo upload?
So I figured out how to manually upload an individual player's photo in the game, but is there a way to automatically assign all players with their corresponding photos? Any help would be appreciated!

MISSING Player John J. Brown 1897 Brooklyn Bridegrooms
I've located a woodcut of John Brown, who pitched for the 1897 Brooklyn Bridegrooms. He was pitching for the independent Wilmington club in 1903 when his image appeared in the October 10, 1903 Wilmington Evening News. Given the common name, I used the brief bio printed with the image to confirm that I had the right man. The bio mentioned he was from Philadelphia and was recently married. Brown lived and worked in Philadelphia his whole life and was married in 1903 to Catherine Duffy, which matches up with the bio. I also couldn't find any other John Brown's pitching in the area, so I strongly believe this is him, despite no record of him playing in 1901 or 1902 (his last year of pro ball was 1900, though based on my research, he also played for Camden in 1904). I've attached the image and his death notice as confirmation that this is right man.

Color photos ?
To all in the community. Are there any 'color' photos of Dave Philley as a Tiger, Wally Post as a Phillie and Bob Shaw as a Tiger. I've been searching for these three for nearly three years! Thanks for any help. (5¢ a pack - luvbblogos).

A couple of Dexters tonight. Here's the later "good field/no hit" shortstop of the Pirates in Angels' camp in '66.

Jack Baker Red Sox 1976
You don't often, if ever, see images of Mr. Baker. Found this shot in an article from 2015 about his work with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Here's the link to the article: Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Jack Baker hit home runs with young lives in Alabama Bright Lights - Alabama NewsCenter
From the photo, it's clear it was taken 9/23/76 in Boston as Baker crossed home plate after hitting his first and only major league home run, off Billy Travers of the Brewers. The next hitter, Butch Hobson, is congratulating him. |

Zoilo Versalles 1959
Then as now, the name of the American League's MVP in 1965 jumps off the list as some kind of aberration.
In point of fact, modern metrics argue that a shortstop who hit .273 with 77 RBI was at least a deserving candidate for the award. He led the league in offensive WAR, and defensive WAR, and topped the American in extra base hits. But two years later he finished the season with a .200 average, was dealt to the Dodgers, dropped to .197 in '68, would move three times before August '69, and struggle back to the majors with the '71 Braves - only to again hit below .200. Seen him before in a Dodger uni, but not the home version. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 01:06 AM. |

Here's big Bob, who team after team assumed was going to hit the cover off the ball because he looked like he could.
