NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION FINALS
DALLAS TAKES CONTROL OF SERIES WITH GAME 5 WIN
The Dallas Chaparrals are one victory away from their first NBA championship after beating Baltimore 96-84 in Game Five. John Layton once again led the way with 19 points and 12 rebounds but it was terrible shot selection from Baltimore that doomed the Bullets. Baltimore's two go-to guys, Peter Warren and Joseph Mozell, were a combined 5-for-26 from the floor while as a team the Bullets shot just 33%. Dallas did not shoot much better, except from the charity stripe, where the Chaps were nearly perfect. The series shifts back to Baltimore for game six on Tuesday.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
OH! NO NO-NO! WHITE LOSES NO-HITTER WITH 2 OUT IN 9TH
Ernie White came within one out of making history only to see his bid for a no-hitter broken up by a bloop single off the bat of Hank Lieber with 2 out in the ninth inning. The St Louis Cardinals easily prevailed 11-1 over the New York Giants but it was clearly a dejected Cards clubhouse following the game. The Cards failed to turn a doubleplay 2 batters before Lieber came up when shortstop Lynn Myers was a little slow on the relay to Frank McCormick at first base. Mel Ott fanned for out number two before Lieber ended the bid. A wild pitch moved Mickey Haslin to second and he scored on Lieber's single. White then retired Vince Dimaggio to finish the complete game. He struck out 5 and walked 4 in the 1-hit performance. Offensively Stan Musial and Walker Cooper each hit 3-run homers to lead the St Louis attack.

Only two Cardinals pitchers have ever thrown a no-hitter. Jack Powell was the first to do it in 1910 and Josh Billings turned the trick in 1940. In all, there have been 40 no-hitters tossed since 1901 including 2 last season. The last National League no-hitter was by the Braves Stan Ferens in 1943.

It was a wild game in Brooklyn where the hometown Dodgers outscored Cincinnati 11-10 in a slugfest. Stan Hack's 2-run homer in the 8th provided the margin of victory for the Dodgers. Carl Furillo also homered for the winners while Pete Reiser had 3 hits. Johnny Mize drove in 3 runs for the Reds while leadoff man Grady Hatton had 3 hits including a pair of doubles.

Warren Spahn took matters into his own hands to lead Boston past Cliff Melton and the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-5. Spahn allowed 5 earned runs in 7 and 2/3 innings but at the plate he drove in 3 runs and had a pair of hits including a triple. Melton, who had allowed just 2 earned runs in his first 26 innings, was rocked for 8 runs and 12 hits in 6 innings work.

In Chicago Buster Adams had 5 rbi's to pace Philadelphia past the hometown Cubs. Adams hit a 3-run homer in the third inning and a bases loaded single in the 5th off of Cubs starter and losing pitcher Paul Erickson. 39 year old Bill Swift went the distance for his first win of the season. With 264 career victories Swift is second among active players behind the Giants Bob Weiland (301), although Weiland is in the minors at this time.

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUND UP
BABICH 3-HITS RED SOX
Johnny Babich tossed a complete game 3-hitter as the Cleveland Indians blanked the last place Boston Red Sox 4-0. Johnny Pesky led off the game for Boston with a single but he was quickly retired on a doubleplay ball. The Red Sox would not get another hit until Ted Williams led off the top of the 7th with a single. Williams ended up stranded at second and was the only Red Sox hitter to advance that far. Jim Gleeson homer and Charlie English drove in a pair of runs for the Indians, who improved the majors best record to 9-2. Babich is 3-0 with a 0.68 era.

The White Sox' Gene Schott is also 3-0 and he lowered his era to 1.44 with a complete game 5-hit 3-0 shutout of the visiting New York Yankees. Catcher Harry Danning's 4th inning rbi single would be all the offense the White Sox would need but Chicago would plate two more in the 5th thanks to an error from Yankee second baseman Calvin Chapman.

In St Louis, the Washington Senators got to Archie McKain. The reigning AL player of the week lasted just 4 and 2/3 innings before being sent to the showers with 11 hits and 6 earned runs on his record. McKain had been 3-0 entering the game. Every Senator starter got at least one hit in the game with Mel Mazzera leading the way with 3 singles. Les Fleming, who won the batting title and was named Sporting News rookie of the year last season, finally showed signs of escaping his early-season funk. Fleming had 2 hits to raise his average to .156 this season. Dewey Adkins improved to 1-2 with the victory after allowing just 3 hits in 8 innings. Adkins also fanned a career high 8 batters.

It was a long day for the crowd at Tiger Stadium as they watched their hometown team get hammered 15-1 by the Philadelphia Athletics. Elmer Valo had 4 hits including a pair of homers for the A's. Dario Lodigiani and Rudy York also went deep for Philadelphia. For York, it was his first homer in an A's uniform since being acquired from Boston just prior to opening day. Les McCrabb improves to 2-1 with the win while Virgil Trucks drops to 0-3.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
O'DEA LIFTS TRIBE PAST RED SOX 3-2 IN 10 INNINGS
Seldom used outfielder Paul O'Dea hit a pinch-hit rbi double in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Cleveland Indians past Boston 3-2. O'Dea, brought in to pinch-hit after the Red Sox gave the ball to Rube Melton with a runner on first and 2 out, promptly ripped Melton's third offering to deep right field allowing Ken Keltner to score all the way from first.

O'Dea has spent the better part of 4 seasons with the Tribe but has only 87 career major league at bats. Max Butcher got the win in relief while Woody Rich, who walked Keltner, was tagged with the loss. Tribe starter Bill Lohrman pitched 9 and 2/3 innings allowing just 2 runs and 6 hits while Boston starter Andy Karl gave up just 5 hits to go with 2 runs.

In Washington, Morrie Anderholt's bases loaded double led the Senators past St Louis 5-2. Tiny Bonham and 2 Yankee relievers combined on a 3-hitter as New York trimmed Chicago 3-2. Calvin Chapman's third homer of the season, a solo shot in the 7th inning, proved the difference. Finally, in Detroit Fred Hutchinson tossed a 3-hitter for his first win of the season as the Tigers blasted Philadelphia 7-2.

In the National League, Vern Olsen and the Cubs shutout Philadelphia 1-0. The winning run was scored on an rbi double from Cubs 2B Don Johnson in the 7th inning. In other games Pittsburgh thumped Boston 9-1 as catcher Bill Salkeld homered and drove in 4 runs for the Bucs. Dave Philley had 3 hits and drove in 3 runs in the Giants 11-5 win over St Louis at the Polo Grounds. Grady Hatton and Joe Dimaggio each homered to lead Cincinnati past Brooklyn 6-4 earning Reds starter Arnold Carter his third win of the season.

BABICH WINS PLAYER OF WEEK AND PITCHER OF MONTH AWARDS
It was a special day for Cleveland pitcher Johnny Babich as he was named both the American League player of the week and pitcher of the month. Babich was 3-0 with a 0.68 era in April. The National League pitcher of the month award when to Johnny Hutchings of the Reds. Hutchings was 2-0 with a 0.78 era and came within one out of a no-hitter. The National League player of the week was Chicago pitcher Vern Olsen. Olsen pitched 18 innings without allowing an earned run and was 2-0 for the week.

The batter of the month awards went to Stan Musial and Danny Litwhiler. Musial hit .321 with 3 homers and 12 rbi's for the St Louis Cardinals. White Sox outfielder Litwhiler hit .367 with 1 homerun and leads the American League with 13 rbi's.

GIANTS RELEASE FORMER ROOKIE OF YEAR TAMULIS
Vito Tamulis, who won 42 games over his first two seasons with the New York Yankees, was released today from the Giants organization. The 35 year old spent nearly all of last season in the minors and was cut after allowing 4 earned runs in 1/3 of an inning at AAA.

A decade ago, Tamulis was pegged to be the next great superstar pitcher. He burst on to the scene in 1935, going 22-11 for the Yankees to win both the rookie of the year and American League Cy Young Award. In 1936 he was 20-16 but his era ballooned to 5.17. After going 12-13 the following season he would never again start a game for the Yankees. His skills suddenly vanished and injuries in the minor leagues made it impossible for him to regain them. Aside from 1945, when he went 8-11 for the Giants he would never start another major league game.

HEBERT CRUISES TO VICTORY ON THE BAYOU
24 year old Jay Hebert had an easy time winning his first PGA Tour event when he carded a 3 under par 69 Sunday to finish 3 strokes ahead of Dutch Harrison. Defending event champion Byron Nelson finished third.

Hebert had entered the final day tied with Charley Ward, but the Englishman fell apart on the back 9 and shot a two over 74. For the victory Hebert claimed the top prize of $1500.

I CALL 'EM AS I SEE 'EM
COLUMNIST SMIL'IN MICKEY WELCH
Well, this is my first contribution to the Sports Daily. Hopefully you will find some interest in what the old Mick has to say. Today I just want to touch on several different topics.

Let's start with basketball. Did anyone forsee the Dallas Chaps biting down on the Bullets like they did the last two games? Baltimore has the best group of shooters in the league -witness their game two performance - but they looked awful in the 3 games in Dallas. Still, with homecourt and their backs against the wall do not expect the Bullets to go down without a fight.....Speaking of fights, can things get any worse in New Orleans. Basketball's powerhouse the past decade did a crash and burn this season and now just about everyone wants to abandon ship. Stars Ethan Milner and Cameron Belli have never seen eye to eye, word is it goes all the way back to 1933 when Belli was taken ahead of Milner first overall in the draft. Milner has had a chip on his shoulder for Belli ever since and even when they were winning it was never a peaceful clubhouse. Now that they suffered through an awful season everything fell apart. Expect one of them to be gone next season and it says here it will be Milner.

It has got to be tough to be a baseball fan in Beantown. The Braves have been terrible for as long as anyone can remember so there is no surprise seeing them at the bottom of the National League standings but what is wrong with the Red Sox? They nearly ended their 24 season drought without a pennant a year ago and this looked like it might be the year for the Red Sox. However, a 3-9 start has even the most diehard fan thinking when does football season begin.

Break out the mint julep's and the dames in the fancy hats, old Mick can smell spring and Derby time once again. If I was a gambling man, I'd be prone to lay a sawbuck down on Phalanx. Eddie Arcaro has already got 3 Derby wins and it says here he will be aboard a 4th come Saturday. If you are willing to taking a bit of a risk don't count out Jet Pilot. The quiet man, Tom Smith, did a whale of a job with old Seabiscuit and rumour has it the Pilot is ready to fly.

That's all from old Mick this time. See you at the Stadium.

BOXING NEWS
LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT SET FOR CLEVELAND STADIUM WEDNESDAY
This is the second of three straight weeks in boxing with a World Title on the line. This week's contest is in the lightheavyweight division where World Champion Lloyd Marshall defends his belt against Henry Hall. The event will take place Wednesday evening outdoors at the Cleveland Stadium. It appears, at least so far, that the weather will be co-operating for the event.

Marshall, a Cleveland native, makes his first title defense since winning the belt with a 9th round knockout of Tommy Yarosz in the post-war tournament championship. His record is 22-4-1. The challenger is from New Orleans and is 19-13-3. Hall has not fought since the end of the postwar tournament last fall.

Last week's World title fight was a featherweight contest in Boston where Willie Pep successfully defended his title against Ray Famechon. Next week it will be the bantamweights turn as Canadian Fernando Gagnon defends his title in Montreal against European Champ Luis Romero.

There is one other fight of note this week. The number one Heavyweight contender Ezzard Charles will face 6th ranked Clarence Henry in Cincinnati on Friday. Charles is 19-1 with his lone loss coming to world champion Joe Louis. Henry is 20-5-1 and he also lost to Louis. Charles last 8 rounds against the champ while Henry was knocked out in the second round.

AUTO RACING
DRIVER DISPUTE PUTS INDY FIELD IN DOUBT
There is just one month remaining until the 33rd running of the Indianapolis 500 but there remains much doubt as to who, if anyone, will be in the field. The drivers, represented by the American Society of Professional Auto Racers (ASPAR), are threatening to boycott pole day festivities and perhaps even the race itself in a dispute over prize money. However, track owner Anton 'Tony' Hulman Jr. is confidant the issue will be settled.

Hulman poured a ton of money into the track prior to last years race, which was the first Indy 500 since 1941. The track had fallen into disrepair during the war. The 1946 winner, George Robson, sadly will not be back to defend his title. Robson, along with another 1946 entrant, George Barringer, was fatally injured in a racing accident in Atlanta last September.

Favorites to win this year include 1946 runner-up Jimmy Jackson and veteran Ted Horn, who has never won but has finished in the top 4 in 7 of the 8 races he has entered.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT : TRIBE HAMMERS SENS 17-7
The defending World Series Champions are looking better and better every day. Cleveland improved it's major league best record to 11-2 by thumping the Senators in the nation's capital 17-7.

Ival Goodman and Don Gutteridge led the Indians attack with 5 rbi's each while Taffy Wright had 4 hits. Each of the first 5 batters in the Tribe lineup scored 3 runs. Steve Gromek wasn't outstanding on the mound but with plenty of run support he went the distance to improve his record to 2-0.

The Indians started the season with 8 straight victories before suffering back-to-back extra inning losses. The answer to the pair of defeats was a 3-game winning streak and what now stands as a 3.5 game lead atop the American League standings.

At the other end of the spectrum is the team the Indians battled down to the wire for the American League Pennant last season. April was a nightmare for the Boston Red Sox and the first day of May provided no relief at all. A 2-0 loss in the series opener at St Louis has dropped the Red Sox record to 3-10, worst in the majors. This game was a perfect illustration of what has gone wrong in Boston. The Red Sox outhit the Browns 8 to 6 but every thing that could go wrong did. Johnny Pesky was caught stealing a pitch before Roy Partee ripped a solid single. Pesky singles again but is picked off first. One Red Sox is thrown out at home and another at third. In short, Boston just can't get the breaks.

Meanwhile, St Louis gets the only two runs of the game thanks to a pair of walks and a double Cookie Lavagetto. Red Sox starter Bob Bowman allows just 4 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings work and both walks come back to haunt him.

CLASSIC DIZZY DEAN IN NEW YORK
Fans at Yankee Stadium were treated to a vintage Dizzy Dean performance as the 37 year old evoked memories of his play a decade ago by tossing a 3-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over Detroit. Dean, who hasn't had a 10 win season since 1939, improved to 3-0 and is looking like the legendary pitcher he was for the first 7 years of his career before injuries caught up with him. Frankie Crosetti, with his major league leading 6th homer of the season, and Sammy Byrd went deep to account for the New York scoring. Hal White pitched a complete game 8-hitter but suffered his first loss of the season.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
Ralph Kiner and Arky Vaughan each homered and drove in 3 runs to lead Pittsburgh past the hometown Cincinnati Reds 8-3. Preacher Roe went the distance to improve his record to 3-0 while Johnny Hutchings fell to 2-1.

In Chicago, first baseman Eddie Waitkus homered and drove in 5 runs to lead the Cubs past New York 9-6 while in Philadelphia Del Ennis hit a 3-run homer to help the Phillies past St Louis 6-4. Charley Schanz pitched 8 innings for his league leading 4th victory of the season.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
TWO WASHINGTON SOPHOMORES OPT FOR NBA
The University of Washington college basketball program suffered a big blow when sophomore guards George *Feigenbaum and Bob *Harrison both announced they will forego their final two years of college ball and enter the NBA draft. A third sophomore, Ray *Corely of Florida has also decided to enter the draft.

Harrison averaged 14.9 ppg for the Huskies this past season and started every game. Feigenbaum averaged 10.1 ppg as a freshman but was bothered by injuries last season and saw little action.

Corley is leaving Florida more out of frustration than anything else. After being named the National Freshman of the Year while playing over 31 minutes a game and averaged 11.6 ppg and 8.9 apg the point guard lost his starting job to Thomas McIntyre and played just 12 minutes a game this past season. There is no question he has the talent to play in the NBA but Corely's attitude is what cost him minutes with the Gators and it remains to be seen if a pro team will take a chance on him.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION PLAYOFFS

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION FINALS
DALLAS WINS NBA TITLE!
Another solid defensive effort has given the Dallas Chaparrals their first NBA championship. The Chaps held Baltimore, one of the best shooting teams in the league, to 36% from the field and were rewarded with an 88-80 victory in Game 6 of the finals. After three quarters the hometown Bullets appeared to have the game well in hand with a 69-59 lead. However, Dallas outscored the Bullets 29-11 in the final quarter to clinch the title.

Rookie center John Layton again led the Chaps in scoring with 22 points but it was the work of reserve PF Joseph Cunningham early in the 4th that carried Dallas to victory. Cunningham had 10 of his 17 points and 5 big rebounds in a 5 minute stretch early in the final quarter.

There will be plenty of finger pointing in Baltimore but few will take more heat than 2-time league MVP Peter Warren. The 11th year pro from Harvard all but vanished defensively during the final two games and was just 4-for-26 from the field. Veteran forward Joseph Mozell was also no where to be found when it mattered most.

KENTUCKY DERBY
DERBY ODDS POSTED
13 horses are set to compete in Saturday's 73rd running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The winner is expected to receive close to the $96,000 paid out to 1946 champion Assault.

Phalanx, with veteran Derby jockey Eddie Arcaro aboard, is considered the favourite. Arcaro rode to victory in the 1938, 1941 and 1945 Derby's. Owner Cornelius Vanderbilt has had entries in two previous Derby's but the best showing was fifth. Most observers expect that to be greatly improved upon come Saturday.

Here is a brief look at each of the entries and the early odds:

2-1 Phalanx - with jockey Eddie Arcaro, a 3-time Derby winner, Phalanx is the favourite.

5-2 Faultless - from Calumet Farm, which won the Derby in '41 and '44 with Whirlaway and Pensive

4-1 On Trust - Jockey John Longden won in 1943 aboard Count Fleet but this is first Derby for owner E.O. Stice and breeder Louis B Mayer.

5-1 Jet Pilot - a rookie jockey in Eric Guerin but a famous trainer in Tom Smith - the man who trained Seabiscut.

6-1 Bullet Proof - Veteran jockey Wayne D Wright won the Derby in '42 aboard Shut Out

6-1 Star Reward - 8th time owner Dixiana has entered a Derby. No winners but 2 seconds including last year with Spy Song.

8-1 Double Jay - First Derby entry for Ridgewood Stable and trainer Walter McCue

10-1 Jett Jett - A Calumet Farm horse now owned by WM Peavey who is entering his first Derby

10-1 Cosmic Bomb - a long time between Derby's for trainer William Booth, who's only other entry was a 14th place finish in 1928.

12-1 Liberty Road - jockey Job Dean Jessop finished third in his first Derby last year.

12-1 Stepfather- W.L. Ranch has two longshot entries in this, their first Derby.

20-1 Riskolater - like Liberty Road, breeder was Clairborne Farm

25-1 W.L. Sickle - second longshot from owner W.L. Ranch

NOTE - In real life Jet Pilot barely held off a slow starting but hard charging down the stretch Phalanx for the win with Faultless coming in third.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
COMEBACKS THE STORY OF THE DAY IN NATIONAL LEAGUE
All four of yesterday's National League contests resulted in come-from-behind victories.

In Boston, the Braves tied Brooklyn on an 8th inning rbi single from reserve catcher Bill Drescher and won 4-3 on a 12th inning run scoring single from rookie Earl Torgeson. The hard luck continues for Dodger starter Don Black who despite a 2.43 era is 0-3 on the season. Black did not factor in the decision as he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the 9th.

In Chicago, the Cubs scored 6 times in the 8th inning to beat New York 6-2. Augie Galan's bases loaded double was the big blow to make a winner of Ed Head (3-1). Russ Bauers took the loss to fall to 1-2 despite allowing just 1 Chicago hit through the first 7 innings.

In Philadelphia, the Phillies built up a 3-1 lead only to see the visiting St Louis Cardinals score three times in the top of the 8th and hold on for a 4-3 victory. Marty Marion's 2-run double for the Cards proved to be the difference in the game. Mort Cooper went 8 innings for his first win of the season while relievers Fred Martin and Johnny Beazley combined to strike out the side in the bottom of the 9th.

The biggest comeback was staged in Cincinnati where the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to tie the Reds at 6. In the top of the 10th Maurice Van Robays triple with 2 on base completed the comeback as Pittsburgh won 8-6.

DODGERS LOSE FURILLO FOR AT LEAST A MONTH
For the second year in a row promising Brooklyn outfielder Carl Furillo will miss substantial time because of an inury. Furillo tore a groin muscle in yesterday's game at Boston and will be sidelined indefinately. Last season, an achilles tendon injury suffered in AAA forced him to miss 6 weeks and delayed his major league debut until July. Furillo hit .271 in 28 games his rookie season. This year he was hitting just .170 after 14 games but did manage to hit his first career homerun over the weekend.

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP
CAN THINGS GET ANY WORSE FOR THE RED SOX?
The Boston Red Sox suffered yet another loss in unusual fashion dropping them 8 games out of first place just over two weeks into the season. No one has felt the pain of this past month more than starting pitcher Earl Johnson.

Johnson, despite a 1.88 era saw his record drop to 0-2 after a 5-1 loss at St Louis yesterday. Working on a no-hitter through 6 innings, Johnson still had allowed just 2 hits heading into the bottom of the 8th inning when, after walking the first two Browns batters, he was pulled for reliever Rube Melton. Melton managed to retire the first hitter with a deep fly ball caught by Ted Williams at the warning track. The next 4 batters delivered a double, a walk, a single and a double. When Melton was pulled the score was now 5-1 St Louis. Woody Rich would retire the final two St Louis hitters to end the inning but the Red Sox had gone from the euphoria of a possible no-hitter to yet another crushing defeat. In 7 appearances Melton has an era of 22.50 and has blown both of his save opportunities.

In other American League action Washington outslugged Cleveland 10-7. Phil Cavarretta had 3 hits including a homer to raise his league leading average to .404. Right fielder Jim Gleeson doubled, tripled and homered for the Tribe.

First inning homeruns from Norm Schlueter and Danny Litwhiler stood up as Chicago held off Philadelphia 3-2. White Sox reliever Jack Hallett preserved the victory by getting Skeeter Newsome to ground out with 2-out and the bases loaded with A's to end the game.

Frankie Crosetti went 4-for-4 to help the Yankees past Detroit 7-3. Joe Gallagher drove in a pair of runs with a seventh inning triple that sealed the victory for New York.

Dallas wins the title. It must've been rigged. Baltimore was such a powerhouse there was no way they should've lost.

And those Red Sox are amazing. 3-11 and a different loss everytime. Crazy stuff man. Keep up the great work.

Takes a lot of restraint. I find myself all the time wanting to play Sunday's golf round a little early or zip through the Stanley Cup Finals but so far I have been able to force myself to wait. It does keep me motivated to get recaps done so I can get to the next day.

BOXING NEWS
MARSHALL RETAINS LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
With a packed house at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium roaring in approval, Lloyd Marshall successfully defended his world lightheavyweight title with a 15 round unanimous decision over challenger Henry Hall. The Cleveland native dominated the fight, winning virtually every round and knocking the challenger to the canvas twice. It was amazing Hall survived the 15th round after getting knocked down 20 seconds into it. He rose at the count of 8 but was barely able to move, catching at least 15 strong scoring blows in the final 2 minutes while never landing a punch himself.

At 23-4-1, Marshall looks ahead to facing either Archie Moore or Billy Conn in the fall. Moore, ranked 2nd in the division is 31-2 while the third ranked Conn is 27-1-2.

On the undercard young middleweight Charley xSmith won his professional debut. The Utica, New York boxer scored an 8 round unanimous decision over Columbus, Ohio native Jimmy Welch. At 3-6, Welch is hardly considered much of a challenge for the 19 year old Smith.

NOTE - Smith is a boardmember named fighter submitted by Matt From Tenn. All board members will have a small "x" prior to their last name for easy identification.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
YANKEES ACQUIRE MITCHELL FROM ATHLETICS
To fill the void created by the season ending injury to Charlie Keller, the New York Yankees acquired rookie outfielder Dale Mitchell from Philadelphia for a pair of pitchers. The 25 year old Mitchell, a 2nd round pick of the A's in the offseason, had little chance of seeing much action in the Philadelphia outfield with the likes of Chet Laabs, Elmer Valo, Roy Cullenbine and young Wally Westlake ahead of him. In 4 at bats, all as a pinch-hitter, Mitchell had one base hit.

Going to the A's are major league reliever Steve Rosar and minor league starter Mike Budnick. The 29 year old Rosar has not allowed an earned run in 4 innings work this season. Last year he was 1-3 in 13 appearances for the Yankees. The 27 year old Budnick was signed as a free agent in the offseason by the Yankees after being released by the Giants. He was 3-1 with a 2.14 era in AA so far this season.

REDS RALLY PAST PIRATES 6-5
Cincinnati scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5. Johnny Mize tied the game with an rbi single before a pinch-hit sac fly off the bat of Frankie Hayes scored Eddie Lukon with the winning run. Johnny Hetki got the win in relief of Harry Feldman while Bucs reliever Ed Bahr took the loss. Cliff Melton allowed 4 runs in 8 innings work but escaped without a decision. Melton also had 2 rbi's in the game.

The Brooklyn Dodgers scored all their runs in the second inning of a 5-4 win in Boston. Braves starter Warren Spahn settled down nicely after the second inning but with 6 hits and an error in the second the damage was too much for the Braves. Jackie Robinson had 2 hits for the winners to increase his batting average to .250. Rex Barney pitched 8 innings for the win.

In the opener of a 5-game series in St Louis between the Cubs and Cardinals it was Chicago that drew first blood. Harlond Clift and Phil Rizzuto each homered in a 7-2 Chicago victory. Paul Erickson went the distance, allowing just 6 hits for his first win of the season.

RED SOX FIND A WAY TO LOSE ANOTHER BALLGAME
The Boston Red Sox once again see what looks like a sure victroy turned into a very bitter loss. The St Louis Browns completed a 3-game sweep at home over the Red Sox with a come from behind 7-6 victory. Thanks to a pair of Ted Williams homeruns the Red Sox led 6-1 entering the bottom of the 8th inning. Homeruns from Bruce Campbell and Vern Stephens led to a 5-run outburst in the 8th that tied the game for St Louis. The Browns won it with 2 singles and an error from Red Sox first baseman Babe Young in the bottom of the 9th. The Red Sox fall to 3-12 on the season while the surprising Browns are just a game and a half behind first place Cleveland.

The Indians lost 4-3 in Washington. Third baseman Spider Jorgenson paced the Sens with 3 hits, including a homer, and 3 rbi's. After starting the season 3-0, Johnny Babich suffered his first loss of the season for the Tribe.

Sammy Byrd and Joe Gallagher each homered as the Yankees scored all their runs in the 8th inning of a 5-4 win over the visiting Detroit Tigers. Max Lanier allowed just 2 runs in 8 innings work for the win. The Tigers nearly tied it in the ninth, scoring twice and stranding the tying run at third base.

Ray Scarborough pitched what was likely the best game of his career, a complete game 2-hit shutout to lead the A's past the visiting Chicago White Sox. It was Scarborough's first win of the season after getting rocked in each of his previous three starts.

NFL Football - TPF
college football - Quick play football an excel based game
CFL - quick play football an excel based game
NBA - TPB2005
College hoops - TDCB
Hockey - WhatifSports
Boxing - TBCB
Horse Racing - Down the stretch a quick play dice game
Indy 500 - a Thomas Mink dos based game
Soccer - a dice game called Quick play soccer
Golf - a quick play golf cpu game

The main games I am sure you know about. Info and downloads for the quickplay games can be found at this site http://www.tabletop-sports.com/

However, most of the ratings had to be done by myself since aside from the college football none are available for this era.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
BONHAM TOSSES 4-HITTER AS YANKS WIN 5TH STRAIGHT
The New York Yankees are closing in on the American League lead thanks to a 5-game winning streak. Tiny Bonham tossed a complete game 4-hitter yesterday to lead New York past Detroit 5-1 at Yankee Stadium. Newcomer Dale Mitchell, just acquired from Philadelphia, had 2 hits and scored a pair of runs in his New York debut.

In other American League action, Taffy Wright's 9th inning rbi single gave Cleveland a 2-1 victory over the Browns in St Louis. Bill Lohrman pitched 8 innings, allowing just 4 hits, to improve his record to 4-0. Vic Wertz had two of the 4 St Louis hits.

Washington hammered the slumping Red Sox 14-5 at Fenway. Cecil Travis had 4 rbi's for the Sens with Mel Mazzera and Phil Cavarretta each driving in 3. Joe Haynes went the distance to improve his record to 3-1. The news was even worse for Boston when they learned after the game that second baseman Bobby Doerr will miss at least 3 weeks with a shoulder injury. Doerr was hitting just .151 in 16 games this season.

In the only other American League game Fred Caliguiri and a pair of relievers combined to pitch Philadelphia past Chicago 3-2.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
In St Louis Hoot Evers and Marty Marion each had 3 hits to help the Cardinals past Chicago 6-1. St Louis pitcher Al Jurisch improved to 3-2 with a complete game 6-hitter. Vern Olsen falls to 3-2 with the loss.

Veteran backup catcher Bernie Warren's 2-run homer helped the Phillies to a 4-3 win over the visiting New York Giants. The Phillies managed just 5 hits off of losing pitcher Dave Koslo, who's record drops to 1-3.

Roy Hughes and seldom used first baseman Vance Dinges each had 3 hits and a pair of rbi's to pace Boston past Cincinnati 9-2. Reds starter Arnold Carter failed to last through the third inning after giving up 6 runs in that frame. Jesse Flores (1-2) earned his first win of the season.

In Pittsburgh, Bob Elliott's 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th gave the Pirates a 3-2 win over Brooklyn. The Dodgers had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the 8th on a Pete Reiser 2-run double. Reiser's hit was just the second Dodger basehit of the game off of winning pitcher Ken Heintzelman.

EAGLES SIGN EX-GIANT RECEIVER GEORGE
The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a one year deal with veteran wideout Bubba George. The 7th year pro from Northern Arizona was a 4th round pick of the Giants prior to the inagural NFL season of 1941. He has 358 career catches including 69 last season when he started all 16 games for New York. George will replace Todd Vick in the Eagles starting lineup. Vick, a free agent who caught 68 passes a year ago, appears close to signing with Washington.

In other news Jacksonville has signed former Cincinnati offensive tackle Brian Mayberry. The veteran from Purdue started 5 games for the Bengals last season will likely be backup with the Jags. Mayberry has started 71 games in his career which also included a stop in Minnesota.

TOP HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER CHARLES IN ACTION TONIGHT
Heavyweight Ezzard Charles, who's only postwar loss came at the hands of World Champion Joe Louis, enters the ring in Cincinnati this evening. His opponent will be 6th ranked Clarence Henry of Los Angeles. Henry is 20-5-1 and should provide a nice test for Charles, who is hoping to get a rematch with Louis in the fall. Nicknamed "The Cincinnati Cobra", Charles has a record of 19-1.

BOXING NEWS
EZZARD CHARLES LOOKS READY FOR REMATCH WITH LOUIS
Number one heavyweight contender Ezzard Charles manhandled 6th ranked Clarence Henry in their bout in Charles' hometown of Cincinnati last night. The referee stopped the fight in the 14th round because of exessive bleeding around both of Henry's eyes. In truth, it probably should have been stopped 3 rounds earlier as Henry failed to register a meaningful punch after being knocked down in the 11th.

Henry did well early in the fight and even sent Charles to the canvas in the 6th. However, with the hometown crowd cheering him on Charles quickly rose to his feet and by the start of the 7th round began to take complete control of the bout.

At 20-1, Charles only loss was to heavyweight champion Joe Louis in the post-war elmination tournament title match. He is hopeful the unbeaten Louis will agree to a rematch in the fall.

73RD KENTUCKY DERBY
SLOPPY CONDITIONS FOR THE DERBY
With a heavy rain falling most of Friday the track at Churchill Downs will be quite slow. Because a lot of late money has been coming in on Faultless, that horse has moved to the favourite ahead of Phalanx.
Here is a look at recent betting trends:

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
REDS BEAT BRAVES BUT LOSE DIMAGGIO
The Cincinnati Reds beat the Boston Braves 3-1 but the victory came at a cost. Veteran outfielder Joe Dimaggio was placed on the disabled list after injuring his hip while sliding into second. The Reds are hopeful their cleanup hitter will only miss 2 weeks. In the game, Johnny Hutchings tossed a 3-hit complete game to improve his record to 3-1 while 2B Grady Hatton had a pair of hits, an rbi and run scored.

In other National League action Ralph Kiner had a pair of rbi's as Pittsburgh topped Brooklyn 5-3. Maurice Van Robays and Bob Elliott each had 3 hits for the winners while Preacher Roe won his 4th game, allowing just 1 run and 6 hits in 7 innings work.

Charley Schanz is 5-0 after tossing a complete game 5-hitter in a 6-1 Philadelphia win over the New York Giants. Bennie Warren and Pete Suder each drove in two runs for the winners.

Rip Russell had 4 hits and drove in 4 runs to lead the Chicago Cubs past the Cardinals 9-4 in St Louis. Harlond Clift hit his league leading 6th homer for the Cubs.

"WILL IT EVER END?' LAMENT RED SOX FANS
As has been the case so often in this young season, the Boston Red Sox found yet another way to let what looked like a sure victory slip through their fingers. This time the Washington Senators scored twice in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 5 and won it with a run in the 10th inning. The loss is the Red Sox 14th in 17 games. Errors again played a big role in the loss as a pair of Johnny Pesky miscues in the first inning helped the Sens to a quick 3-0 lead.

"I don't understand it," said Red Sox first baseman Babe Young afterwards. "It is just weird things keep happening. Pesky is a gold glove third baseman with just one error this season and he goes and has two in one inning."

One thing that is not hard to understand is just how poor the Red Sox bullpen is. With a 5.16 team era the Red Sox are far and away worst in the American League. The bullpen has allowed 35 earned runs in 30 innings work.

The one sliver of hope for Red Sox fans is this very closely mirrors last season when Boston was 2-10 in April only to reel off 12 victories in their first 14 games in the month of May. The problem with hopes of history repeating is that we are already 5 days into May and the Red Sox have not start any sort of a positive streak.

In other American League action outfielder Ival Goodman homered and drove in 3 runs as Cleveland doubled the Browns 6-3 in St Louis. Tommy Henrich drove in 4 runs including the game winner with a 2-run homer in the top of the ninth as Detroit beat Chicago 7-6 and Dizzy Dean improved to 4-0 as New York topped Philadelphia 3-1. Frank Crosetti hit his 7th homer of the season for the Yankees.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE OFFSEASON NEWS
VIKINGS SIGN EX-SAINTS DEFENSIVE LINEMAN WHITE
Former New Orleans Saints DT Ellis White has agreed to a 3-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings. A second round pick of the Saints in 1942, White was a starter for 4 seasons before being relegated to a back-up role last year. His best season was 1945 when he had 9 sacks and forced three fumbles. Last year the former Texas Longhorn started 6 games for the Saints and had 5 sacks. He is expected to be backup in the Vikings 3-4 system.

In other signing news
the Cardinals signed former Carolina free safety Lewis Krager as a backup to all pro Booker Hasselbeck. An undrafted free agent out of Alabama, Krager spent for seasons with Jacksonville before signing with Carolina last year. He has 3 interceptions in his career but due to injuries appeared in just 5 games with the Panthers last season.

Veteran linebacker Dameane Bonner has left Houston for Cincinnati. Bonner started 9 games for the Texans last season and had 34 tackles. The ex-San Jose State linebacker enjoyed his best season as a pro two years ago when he had 58 tackles and 3 sacks.

Finally, former UTEP running back Choo-Choo *Roberts signed with Buffalo a day after being let go by the Steelers. Roberts was Pittsburgh 4th round draft pick last month. Neither the Steelers nor Roberts would say why he was cut. Roberts will back up Bills second round pick Buddy *Young this season.

73RD KENTUCKY DERBY
JET PILOT WINS DERBY!
With a strong stretch run Jet Pilot galloped to victory in the 73rd Kentucky Derby making a winner of rookie Derby jockey Eric Guerin. The winning time of 2:06 3/5 was a fifth of a second faster than the real 1947 Kentucky Derby which was also won by Jet Pilot.

In the replay Stepfather, a 15-1 longshot, had the lead as they emerged from the final turn. However, Stepfather was out of gas and quickly faded. Jet Pilot made a huge charge on the outside and battled for the lead with Liberty Road. Phalanx, stuck in the pack early in the race, was making a hard charge but it appeared to be a little late. Jet Pilot overtook Liberty Road just before the 1 mile mark and would go on to win by a full length. Liberty Road, at 12-1 odds, managed to hold off Phalanx for second. On Trust was fourth and Cosmic Bomb finished fifth. Stepfather, which lead for much of the race slipped to 6th.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
ROOKIE HOUTTEMAN OUTDUELS RAFFENSBERGER 1-0
Cincinnati Reds rookie pitcher Art Houtteman held the Boston Braves to just three hits over 8 innings as the Reds blanked the Braves in Boston 1-0. Houtteman held the Braves hitless until Butch Nieman and Roy Hughes hit back to back singles in the fifth inning. A ground out moved the runners to second and third with two out before Houtteman fanned Raffensberger to end the threat. It was the only time in the game the Braves had a runner advance past first base. The only run of the game was created by 3 Cincinnati singles in the third inning. Johnny Hetki and Tommy de la Cruz preserved the victory by pitching a scoreless ninth for the Reds.

PIRATES STAGE NINTH INNING RALLY TO BEAT BROOKLYN
Pittsburgh scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to rally past the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-3. A 2-run homer from rookie Jackie Robinson, his second of the season, helped the Dodgers build up a 3-1 lead despite getting just 3 hits all game off of Pittsburgh hurler Jim Tobin. Don Black had held the Pirates to just 1 run through seven innings but once again Black, who is 0-3 with a solid 2.23 era, would not earn his first victory of the season. In the bottom of the 9th Brooklyn reliever Red Phillips took over for Ralph Branca, who had pitched a scoreless 8th. Phillips was greeted with 3 doubles and a walk and before the Dodgers could even get anyone ready in the bullpen the game was over.

In other National League action Del Ennis drove in a pair of runs and Bill Swift pitched a complete game 4-hitter as Philadelphia beat visiting New York 3-1. In St Louis, both the Cubs and Cards scored 4 times in the first inning but it was a 5th inning solo homer from Walker Cooper that proved the difference in a 5-4 St Louis win.

COMEBACK ALLOWS YANKEES TO STRETCH WINNING STREAK TO 7 GAMES
A Frank Crosetti rbi double followed by a run-scoring single from Sammy Byrd allowed the New York Yankees to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth to outlast Philadelphia 11-10. Bud Metheny led the Yankees offense with 3 hits including a homerun and 3 rbi's. The victory moves the Yankees to within 1 game of first place Cleveland atop the American League standings.

The Indians were victimized by a St Louis comeback. Vern Stephens hit a two run homer in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Browns a 4-3 victory.

Stop me if you have heard this one before. The Red Sox lost again, making it 15 defeats in 18 games this season. Washington beat the hometown Boston squad 5-3 as once again Red Sox starter Earl Johnson came out of the game empty handed. He pitched 5 shutout innings to lower his era to 1.52 but Johnson's record stands at 0-2.

In the other American League game Detroit scored 7 runs in the top of the 8th to beat the Chicago White Sox 10-1. Hal Trosky had 3 hits including a homer and drove in 3 runs to lead the Tigers. Stubby Overmire pitched a complete game 5-hitter for the win.

PGA TOUR: DALLAS INVITATIONAL
4-WAY TIE HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND OF DALLAS INVITATIONAL
With one round remaining in the Dallas Invitational things are wide open as four golfers are tied for the lead. Dai Rees, winner of the Greater Greensboro Open, shot the best round of the day with a 6 under 65. He shares the lead with Jay Hebert, who won last week's stop at New Orleans, Max Faulker and Bob Hamilton. Bobby Locke sits one stroke off the pace.

Sam Snead, the leader after Friday's round, struggled all day Saturday and shot a 75 to fall 5 strokes behind the leaders. Amateur Joe Carr also had a tough day Saturday and dropped from second place to near the bottom of the pack after shooting a 76.

Man, I love this stuff so much, but it pains me to no end to see my Sox doing do poorly. In your recreation of Baseball history, what is the record for fewest wins in a season? I want to know what the sox have to shoot for to avoid that total disaster. None the less, this is great stuff as always!!! Go Sox!!!

1927 White Sox and 1929 Red Sox each finished at 45-109. In a shortended season the 1918 Cleveland Indians won just 41 games. Their record was 41-91 in a season shortened by WWI travel restrictions.

In the NL the Phillies of 1919 were just 52-88 while in a shorter season the 1918 Brooklyn club won only 46 games.

At the other end of the spectrum the best season belongs to the 1906 Red Sox who won 107 games against just 47 losses.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PIRATES WIN BUT LOSE MELTON
The Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the Boston Braves 10-9 yesterday but after the game all the attention was focused on the injured back of Pirates ace Cliff Melton. The 35 year old lefthander, a 4-time Cy Young Award winner, left the game in the first inning with back spasms. He has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and the Pirates hope to have him back in 3 weeks. Melton has been remarkably healthy the past 6 years but was troubled by back problems early in his career. It will be his 4th trip to the DL with the first two costing him 15 starts in 1940 due to back woes. The only other time he was injured was in 1943 when he missed 6 weeks with a fractured cheekbone after being hit with a batted ball.

As for the Pirates-Dodgers game, Ralph Kiner homered and drove in 4 runs to lead the Bucs. The Dodgers scored 9 runs despite getting just 8 hits in the game. However, 6 Pirate relievers ended up issuing 10 walks to Brooklyn batters.

In Philadelphia, Vic Lombardi tossed a 2-hit shutout as the Phillies blanked New York 2-0. Joe Gordon's solo homerun and a John O'Neil fielders choice accounted for all of the scoring. 29 year old Giant hurler Adrian Zabala looked impressive in his first major league start despite taking the loss. Zabala allowed 5 hits and just one walk.

EVERS DELIVERS WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM
The St Louis Cardinals scored a dramatic 8-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs. With two out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Cards down by 3 runs, Hoot Evers hit a grandslam homer off of Cubs reliever Johnny Schmitz to give St Louis the game and bragging rights in the 5 game series. The two clubs had split the previous 4 games.

In the other National League game, Johnny Mize's 2-run homer helped visiting Cincinnati past Boston 4-1. Harry Feldman and two relievers combined on a 6-hitter for the win. Warren Spahn took the loss to fall to 2-3.

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP
It's about time Red Sox fans. Boston snapped an 8-game losing streak with a thrilling 9-8 victory over Washington. The Red Sox led 8-7 heading into the top of the ninth inning and when Mel Mazzera delivered a sac fly to tie the game I am sure Red Sox fans were thinking 'here we go again'. However, instead of another blown game by the Boston bullpen Rube Melton pitched a scoreless 10th and the Red Sox finally caught a break in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run without getting a base hit. A pair of walks and an error led to the winning run. For most of the season when you heard that statement you just assumed it was the Red Sox in the field. Maybe their luck is changing.

In St Louis, Clyde Kluttz hit a bases-loaded pinch-hit double in the top of the 14th to give Cleveland a 6-3 win over the Browns.

Roy Cullenbine had 4 hits as Philadelphia ended the Yankees 7-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory while in Chicago shortstop Red Kress had 2 homers and 6 rbi's to lead Detroit past the White Sox 10-2.

DODGERS ACQUIRE MCCORMICK FROM CARDINALS
The Brooklyn Dodgers picked up veteran infielder Frank McCormick from the St Louis Cardinals in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers. The 35 year old McCormick never lived up to the potential most felt he had when he made his major league debut for Cincinnati in 1938. With the Cardinals the past three seasons he was restricted to mainly pinch-hit appearances since the Cardinals already had a stacked outfield and Stan Musial playing first baseman. This season McCormick had 6 hits in 12 at bats, all but two as a pinch-hitter. He will get the chance to start every day with the Dodgers after they demoted 38 year old first baseman Zeke Bonura to AAA Montreal to make room for McCormick.

Going to St Louis in the deal are 19 year old shortstop Tommy Brown and 22 year old pitcher Clyde King. Brown is entering his third season of A ball and has an outside chance at playing in the majors. He did get 2 major league at bats for the Dodgers as a September callup. King is 3-1 with a 1.03 era in AA but likely will not develop enough to be a major leaguer.

DEAN AND ELLIOTT CLAIM PLAYER OF WEEK AWARDS
Veteran New York Yankees pitcher Dizzy Dean and Pittsburgh third baseman Bob Elliott have been named the major league players of the week. On the strength of two victories including a complete game 3-hit shutout, Dean was named the American League's top performer over the past seven days. It is the first time in his 16 year career Dean has won a player of the week award. On the season he is 4-0 with a 1.76 era.

The 30 year old Elliott is named National League Player of the Week for the third time in his career. The 4-time allstar hit .524 with 3 homers and 10 rbi's last week. For the season he is hitting .395 with 5 homers and 24 rbi's in 20 games.

GOLF: DALLAS INVITATIONAL
HEBERT WINS SECOND STRAIGHT TOURNAMENT
For the second week in a row rookie Jay Hebert has won a PGA event. Last week the 24 year old claimed victory by three strokes in the New Orleans Open. This time he finished ahead of Dick Burton by just a single stroke. Burton tied for the best round of the day Sunday with a 5 under 66. Hebert finished 3 under for the day but needed a birdie on the par 5 17th to claim the win. Hebert and third place finisher Dai Rees entered the final day tied with 2 others for top spot at 7 under. Rees could only manage par in his final round while the two other co-leaders from Saturday, Max Faulker and Bob Hamilton shot one over and two over respectively to finish 4th and 5th.

The victory earned Hebert $1,800 and increases his season earnings to $4,000. Hebert trails only Ben Hogan atop the money winner list. Next week's PGA stop is the Phoenix Open.

NBA DRAFT LOTTERY TOMORROW
The NBA will hold it's draft lottery tomorrow. At stake is the right to pick first overall in the 1947 college draft. The Boston Celtics, by virtue of the league's worst regular season record, have the best odds at grabbing the top spot, followed by the New York Knickerbockers and New Orleans Jazz.

Among the players touted as the possible first overall selection are Washington guard George *Feigenbaum, Ohio State SF Paul *Huston, Alabama PF Odie *Spears and center Jack *Rocker from the national champion Kentucky Wildcats.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE OFFSEASON
PACKERS INK TE HAROLD SUALUA
With all 3 of the tight ends employed by Green Bay a year ago announcing their retirement, the Packers have a big hole to fill at the position. They somewhat addressed the need over the weekend by signing for Miami TE Harold Sualua to a two year deal. Sualua has been with the Dolphins for 5 seasons but has never made an NFL reception as he was confined to special teams duties through his tenure. As of right now he is the only tight end on the Packers roster so expect them to make another annoucement in the near future.

The Packers are also rumoured close to signing free agent TE Dwight Elliott. Elliott started four games for the Lions last season and had 10 receptions. His best season was 1944 when he made 52 catches including 7 touchdown grabs.

One other signing over the weekend had Jacksonville ink former Washington cornerback Paul Coleman to a 3 year deal. Coleman has started 9 games in his 4 seasons with the Redskins. He will see action primarily in nickel situations for the Jags.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
LATE RALLY GIVES YANKEES ANOTHER WIN
The New York Yankees continue to be the hottest team in baseball. Jack Boiling's rbi single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Yankees a 6-5 win over Philadelphia. New York has won 10 of it's last 12 games and trails first place Cleveland by just a game and a half.

Boiling had 3 hits while pinch-hitter Bud Metheny delivered a 2-run double to pace the New York offense. Tiny Bonham lasted just 5 innings before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. Bonham allowed just 1 run on 4 hits but the win ended up going to reliver Marius Russo, who retired the final four A's hitters.

In the only other American League game Red Kress and Dick Wakefield each drove in a pair of runs as Detroit doubled Chicago 8-4. Wakefield had a pair of hits to improve his league leading batting average to .400.

In the lone National League game Al Jurisch improved his record to 4-2 after pitching the St Louis Cardinals past Cincinnati 4-1. Jurisch went 8 1/3, allowing 9 hits and 1 run. Fred Martin retired the final two Reds hitters for his first save of the season.
