1919 World Series results

1919 World Series: Chicago White Sox vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Results

Game 1, October 3rd, 1919, Comiskey Park
White Sox Surge Past Phillies to Take 1-0 Series Lead
The Chicago White Sox started the World Series in dramatic fashion, stealing Game 1 from the Philadelphia Phillies in a walk-off. Chicago won, 3-2, behind a good day from starter Walter Johnson. The right-hander threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball in the win, which gave the White Sox a 1-0 lead to start the best-of-9 series.
The game came to a sudden end. In the bottom of the ninth, with one out, Johnson reached on an error by the 3B, driving in 1 run. It gave Chicago the 3-2 walk-off win.
"You never want to start a series with a loss, but I saw a lot of good things today," Phillies manager Tom Loftus said. "I'm not worrying. Yet."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
White Sox lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 4th, 1919, Comiskey Park
Philadelphia Win Evens Series at 1
Behind a bravura effort from starter Jesse Barnes, the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Chicago White Sox by the score of 8-4 and got their first win in the 1919 World Series. Barnes threw 9.0 innings allowing 4 runs for the Phillies. The win moves Philadelphia into a 1-1 tie with Chicago.
Philadelphia took advantage of an error in the top of the eighth inning. The game was tied, 4-4, when Mike Gonzalez hit a 2-run single that was misplayed. It put the Phillies in front, 6-4.
"We lost," Chicago manager Jim Manning said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
Series tied 2-1

Game 3, October 5th, 1919, Comiskey Park
Road Win Lifts Philadelphia to 2-1 Lead in WS
When the games really matter, the Philadelphia Phillies put on their best show, beating the Chicago White Sox by a final score of 8-4. Red Shannon went 5 for 5 with a triple, a double, and 3 singles. Philadelphia now leads Chicago 2-1 in the best-of-9 affair.
In the top of the third, Philadelphia second baseman Rogers Hornsby had a productive at-bat. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and two out, Hornsby stroked a run-scoring single to center. It made the score 1-0, Philadelphia. For the game, he went 2 for 5 with 2 singles, while adding 3 RBIs and scoring once.
"It was a good day, but I'm not letting my guard down," Hornsby said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger."
The next game is set to be played for October 7th, 1919 at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.
Phillies lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 7th, 1919, the Baker Bowl
Almost There: Philadelphia On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 5-4 Win
Behind the big bat of third baseman Heinie Groh, the Philadelphia Phillies have opened up a healthy early lead in the World Series. The Phillies topped the Chicago White Sox, 5-4, at the Baker Bowl in Game 4, and now hold a 3-1 edge in the best-of-9 series. Groh went 3-5 with 3 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once to power Philadelphia to victory.
Possum Whitted was the walk-off hero for Philadelphia. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Phillies' first baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"We haven't stopped playing," Chicago manager Jim Manning said. "We didn't get this far to give up."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.
Phillies lead series 3-1

Game 5, October 8th, 1919, the Baker Bowl
Chicago Wins to Cut Philadelphia Lead to 3-2
The Chicago White Sox have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Philadelphia Phillies, winning, 4-1, at the Baker Bowl. White Sox right-hander Walter Johnson threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball. The win cuts the deficit facing the White Sox to 3-2 in the best-of-9 World Series.
Johnson was in the zone all game. He frustrated Philadelphia hitters while giving the White Sox 9 innings of quality work. Johnson threw 118 pitches, allowing 5 hits and getting 5 punchouts.
Phillies manager Tom Loftus did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.
Phillies lead series 3-2

Game 6, October 9th, 1919, the Baker Bowl
Chicago Win Evens Series at 3
The Chicago White Sox took down the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 5-1 and moved into a 3-3 tie in the World Series. The largest share of the credit belongs to Chicago starter Dutch Ruether, who threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball.
The White Sox got a gift in the top of the sixth inning, when they were leading 2-0. With two out and the bases loaded, Red Shannon reached on an error by the second base, driving in 1 run. It made the score 3-0, Chicago.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Chicago manager Jim Manning said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.
Series tied 3-3

Game 7, October 10th, 1919, the Baker Bowl
Philadelphia Wins at Home to Take 4-3 Lead in WS
The importance of Game 7 was not lost on Stan Coveleski.
In leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a crucial, 7-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox at the Baker Bowl, the right-hander rose to the occasion, tossing 9 good innings. Coveleski threw 9.0 innings allowing 6 runs as the Phillies defended their home field to seize a 4-3 lead in the best-of-9 World Series.
An inflection point occurred with two out in the bottom of the fourth. That's when Phillies shortstop Ivy Olson hit a curveball from Reb Russell for a 2-run single. Just like that, Philadelphia was up, 5-4.
"There's nothing like the postseason," said Coveleski, "to ramp up the pressure."
The next game is set to be played for October 12th, 1919 at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
Phillies lead series 4-3

Game 8, October 12th, 1919, Comiskey Park
White Sox Clip Phillies, 1-0, in WS Contest
The Chicago White Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies will take the World Series to a decisive 9th game. Facing a must-win situation, the White Sox shut out the Phillies, 1-0, at Comiskey Park to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Chicago left-hander George Hunter did his part. He threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball.
Hunter was sensational for Chicago. The left-hander went the distance, shutting out the Phillies on 1 hit.
"It has been an incredible experience today," Hunter said in the clubhouse following the game. "It's a short list of people who have started in the World Series at all, and an even shorter list who have done a good job of it."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
Series tied 4-4

Game 9, October 13th, 1919, Comiskey Park
Chicago 1919 World Series Champions
The Chicago White Sox pulled out all the stops tonight, winning the World Series in a hard-fought series with the Philadelphia Phillies.
It was a seesaw affair, but with a 6-3 victory at Comiskey Park, Chicago lay claim to the franchise's 2nd championship.
"There's no denying we faced a tough opponent," said Gavvy Cravath. "But as the old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and that's what we did today."
The champs finished the regular season 82-58 and claimed first place in the AL.
A victory parade is set to be scheduled in Chicago in the days to come.
White Sox win series 5-4

World Series MVP: RF Gavvy Cravath (Chicago White Sox)

(Hey, at least there's no Black Sox Scandal in this sim--and Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte (for starters) are likely Hall of Famers here, too...)

1920 World Series results

1920 World Series: St. Louis Browns vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Results

Game 1, October 6th, 1920, Sportsman's Park
World Series Game 1 Goes to St. Louis Thanks to O'Neill
The St. Louis Cardinals started the World Series in style, downing the visiting St. Louis Browns at Sportsmans Park by a score of 8-4 to grab an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-9 series. Cardinals catcher Steve O'Neill was 3 for 5 with 3 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once.
O'Neill had a consequential at-bat in the bottom of the third for the Cardinals. Coming up with runners on 2nd and 3rd and St. Louis trailing 2-1, he hit a 2-run single.
"We lost," St. Louis manager Travis Helfrich said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.
Cardinals lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 12th, 1920, Sportsman's Park
St. Louis Tops St. Louis Again, 7-5
Riding the 3-hit performance of center fielder Happy Felsch, the St. Louis Cardinals stopped the visiting St. Louis Browns, 7-5, in Game 2 of the World Series. Felsch was 3 for 4 with 3 singles. He scored 2 times for the Cardinals, who now lead the best-of-9 series, 2 games to 0.
Had Hank Severeid not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Severeid hit a 2-run single. That made the score 7-5, in favor of the Cardinals.
"It was a good day but I'm not letting my guard down," Felsch said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.
Cardinals lead series 2-0

Game 3, October 13th, 1920, Sportsman's Park
Cardinals Win Again, Extend Series Lead to 3-0
A big day at the plate from first baseman George Sisler was not enough to keep the St. Louis Cardinals from extending their lead in the World Series. The Cardinals topped Sisler and the St. Louis Browns, 8-5, at Sportsman's Park in Game 3, and now hold a 3-0 edge in the best-of-9 series. Sisler went 2-4 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 in the loss.
Steve O'Neill hit a bases-clearing double off Bill Bayne in the bottom of the third, which put the Cardinals in front, 3-2. In addition to the double, O'Neill had 1 single, while going 2 for 5.
"Every team in baseball loses," Browns manager Travis Helfrich said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
The next game is set to be played for October 10th, 1920 at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.
Cardinals lead series 3-0

Game 4, October 10th, 1920, Sportsman's Park
St. Louis Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 3-1
Already down in the World Series, the St. Louis Browns put on their best show, beating the St. Louis Cardinals by a final score of 9-8. St. Louis catcher Ivey Wingo went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBIs and scoring once. St. Louis now trails St. Louis 3-1 in their marathon, best-of-9 affair.
In the bottom of the ninth, Doc Cook came to bat with the game in the balance. And he delivered, hitting a run-scoring single off St. Louis pitcher Lynn Brenton.
"Things broke our way today and that's great," Browns manager Travis Helfrich said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.
Cardinals lead series 3-1

Game 5, October 11th, 1920, Sportsman's Park
Road Win Lifts St. Louis to 4-1 Lead in WS
When the stakes were high, Jakie May raised his game to match.
The left-handed May turned in a stellar performance in Game 5 of the World Series, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to victory. He allowed 5 hits and struck out 5. The win gave St. Louis a 4-1 lead over the St. Louis Browns in the best-of-9 series.
May pitched a complete game for St. Louis. The left-hander was charged with 1 run on 5 hits. He struck out 5 during his 112-pitch performance.
"We have been clicking right from the start of this series, so our mission statement at the moment is just don't tinker with anything," St. Louis manager Keaton Pile told reporters.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.
Cardinals lead series 4-1

Game 6, October 12th, 1920, Sportsman's Park
St. Louis Wins at Home to Narrow Series Deficit to 4-2
The St. Louis Browns have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading St. Louis Cardinals, winning, 6-4, at Sportsman's Park. Browns right-hander Claude Hendrix threw 9.0 innings allowing 4 runs. The win cuts the deficit facing the Browns to 4-2 in the best-of-9 World Series.
The game was at a stalemate until pinch hitter Marty McManus came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing St. Louis pitcher Jeff Pfeffer, he hit a 2-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting St. Louis on top, 5-4.
Cardinals manager Keaton Pile did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.

Game 7, October 13th, 1920, Sportsman's Park
Cardinals Top Browns
The St. Louis Cardinals were good enough to get past the St. Louis Browns at Sportsmans Park today and secure the 1st championship in franchise history.
"When you wear Cardinals on your shirt, you're good at something," St. Louis skipper Keaton Pile told the press.
Cardinals catcher Steve O'Neill was named MVP of the series after he went .515 with no home runs and 9 runs batted in.
"It feels totally incredible," O'Neill said. "I could live to 1,000 years old and I'd remember this moment."
The new champions capped off a great season with a 7-2 victory over the Browns to win the World Series 5-2.
Cardinals win series 5-2
