MY LIFE IN 1956
EC's in a Fix in '56 EC has loved a lot of things in his life... baseball was one of my great loves... the Mobile Bears, New Orleans Pelicans and the St. Louis Cardinals were my favorites... here's how they are doing on the Fourth of July in '56. My Bears are doing pretty well... 4th place...42-40... 6 and a half games out... My Pels are not doing so well... 35-45... 7th place... 12 and a half games behind in the pennant race... My Redbirds are 36-35... 4th in the National League... trailing by 5 games. |

Here's a look at the current Bears and Pelicans.
One of my favorite Mobile Bears, Bill Dailey, got another win... he went the distance against last place Little Rock... beat them 4-2 with 7 Ks and 3 walks... Gordy Coleman was at 1B... went 2-4 with a triple and an RBI... I see Rod Graber has joined the Bears... he was a really smooth center fielder... and a good .300 hitter... good speed... not a longballer... Jack Waters was a solid outfielder, too... similar to Graber... both were good Triple A players eventually... the Bears have some good starting pitching this year... that is their strong point... not a lot good hitters. The Pelicans don't look like they have much talent this year... first baseman Al Grunwald may be their best player... .330 hitter with some power... may hit 20 homers... and drive in 100 runs... Gail Henley a good outfielder and fair hitter with not a lot of power... Johnny Powers and Emil Panko can go deep and are .300 hitters...Powers did well in Triple A and the Pacific Coast League... always good for 20-30 homers each season... however, the pitching is weak for New Orleans. Monday, May 28, 1956 SUPERMEN SLAM 1ST PLACE DREAMERS... SMILEYS AND SAILORS STILL IN THE HUNT Moon Valley had a chance to wrap up the South Island Secondary League race yesterday, but they couldn't do it... they ran into the longball power of the Littleville Supermen and dropped a 6-4 decision... meanwhile, Grin Hill won a 7-6 thriller over the Gull Lake Sailors and stayed alive in the pennant race, heading into the last weekend of the season... in other league play, Billings blanked the Columbia Black Cats 4-0... that was a huge loss for the Black Cats... they are now knocked out of the title hunt... Moon Valley still controls their own destiny... a win next Sunday and they are the 1956 Secondary League champion. Last edited by Eugene Church; 11-05-2021 at 04:19 PM. |

MY LIFE IN 1956
EC's is in a Fix in '56 Hi, Hey and Hello to all of you guys and gals, you buckaroos and little darlin's, too... this is Danderoo comin' to you loud and clear from the Big Boomin' Voice of the Great Gulf South WYNK, deep in the Heart of Dixie in Baton Rouge, Looziana, just sippin' on ice cold RC Colas, nibblin' on Moon Pies and playin' the best music.... anytime... anyplace... and anywhere. Today we will feature the #1 Country Song "Blue Suede Shoes" by Carl Perkins and the flip side of the #1 Pop Song... you've already heard the current #1 song, the A side "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis Presley a few weeks ago, so I thought today I would play the B side "I Was the One"... methinks, it is a darn good song, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctWMITcNQD0 And now for all you little darlin's and buckaroos, here's Carl Perkins with some good old rockabilly live on the Perry Como TV show... here's the #1 Country Song in the country "Blue Suede Shoes". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRNyvO4QouY Last edited by Eugene Church; 11-06-2021 at 06:56 PM. |

Pelham is the 1956 league champion... the Oaks were 8-2 for the year, while the Acadians slipped to 7-3 and were tied for the runner-up spot with last year's champ Jackson. Pelham blasted Braxton 10-4 on the last day of the season... Delta whipped Bar Harbor 4-1... and Jackson nudged St. Pete 2-1. |

MY LIFE IN 1956
EC's in a Fix in '56 It's summertime and the living is easy... at least, so they say... yep, school is out at Murphy High School... EC is not excited much about the summer... I don't play baseball anymore... boy, I really miss it and the guys I played with over the years... I no longer go and spend the summer in Northwest Alabama with all my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins... those were some good times in EC's life... now my summer is spent working fulltime at The Ranch Restaurant... 3pm to 11 pm EC works hard in the kitchen as a pot washer and cleanup guy... and not bragging, but I am a good one... the chef loves EC...I have to wash and mop the kitchen each evening...also take out the garbage cans, too... EC is the only white person in the kitchen... looking back on it this was a great experience for me... I got to mix and mingle with another race, another culture... EC learned that there are good folks and there are bad folks in all races and all cultures... no race has a monopoly on the good traits... Martin Luther King was right... we should judge people on the basis of their character and not the color of their skin... this would make the world a better place to live in... I think EC learned a very valuable lesson working at The Ranch... it made me a better person. Looking back on the school year... EC didn't eat in the lunch room... my Mama made me 2 boloney (bologna) and mayonnaise sandwiches on light bread (white bread) and put them in a brown bag... I would get a half pint of Borden's chocolate milk to drink with my dee-lish-us bloney sandwiches... we had a group that got together in the courtyard for lunch every day... to eat lunch, shoot the breeze, pick on one another, tease one another... often we would talk sports... during the football season we would bet with a bookie... we pooled our money and got a card for $10 and would pick 10 winners... if we picked them all correctly, we would win $300... don't think we ever won... but we came close to the big money... it's a sucker's bet, methinks... I have heard the odds are really 1000 to 1... the bookie should have given a winner $10,000... one weekend I remember we got 9 out the 10 correct... the only one we missed was a tie game... it was picked even and ended up that way... we lost... the bookie won all ties. One of our courtyard regulars was Jerry Yawn... he was a very skinny Golden Glove boxer... naturally we nicknamed him "Punchy" as in "punch drunk" from too many licks on the noggin... one day I went with "Punchy" to see him train at the gym... that day he sparred with Jeff Davis... "Punchy" was lightweight (135 pounds)... Jeff was a light heavyweight (175 pounds)... not an even match at all... but they were just sparring and not serious... just training, that's all... just working out... that's all... well, lo and behold while EC is watching, "Punchy" uncoils a straight right hand and blood splatters everywhere... "Punchy" had broken Jeff's nose... after I related this story to all the noonday courtyarders at Murphy High School... we quickly went back to Jerry's given and proper name... 'nuff said. And what about the "loves of my life" - Margie Pollard and Judy Flack?... EC added a few more to the list... what the heck, the more the merrier... I guess Rebecca Murphy was at the top of my fantasy list... she was in my English, Typing and Biology classes... no, EC didn't talk to my fantasy ladies, but I always hope they would talk to me and ask me to the prom... nope, never happened this year in '56... so EC's lonely life continues... yep, guess EC will have to "wait until next year"... '57 could be Heaven for EC. |

Monday, June 4, 1956 MOONIES WINS SECONDARY TITLE... NOW HEADED FOR THE SUPREME LEAGUE The Moon Valley Dreamers made certain they would win the South Island Secondary League crown and win promotion to the Supreme League next year... they won the final game of the season so there would be no doubt about it and no playoff games... going into the season finales Gull Lake and Grin Hill could have forced the playoffs, if the Dreamers had lost to the Sailors and the Smileys had won their final game. Moon Valley took care of business by edging out Gull Lake 4-2... Grin Hill fell to the Columbia Black Cats 13-7... and Littleville blanked the Billing Rams 7-0... at season's end 4 teams tied for 2nd place. |
