Bout 273 - Muhammad Ali versus Joe Bugner

Round 12 Commentary

We go to the last round, as the bell sounds to start the 12th.
The swelling on the face of Bugner is noticeable, even at a distance.
This has not been one for the ages, as both fighters have been very tentative the entire fight.
Ali slips in a jab to the body.
Ali traps Bugner in the corner!
Ali gets off a jab to the solar plexus.
Ali misses wildly with the hook.
Ali grabs and holds Joe Bugner ...
Ali finally lets go of Bugner.
Ali picks off the jab thrown by Bugner.
Bugner fires and misses.
Ali seems to have done enough to win this fight, but this was by far his best outing!
The bell sounds ending the 12th and final round of this fight.

Bout 274 - Trevor Berbick versus Frank Bruno

Round 12 Commentary

As the bell sounds for the final round, it looks as if the scorecards will determine the outcome of this fight.
Berbick's corner is an experienced crew but the swelling he's suffered looks almost as bad as it did before the minute break.
If the swelling was lessened by Frank Bruno's corner, it wasn't reduced enough to make a big difference.
Berbick got some great advice from Teddy Atlas between rounds, let's see if he puts it to use here in round 12.
Bruno scores with a hook to the body but he misses when he tries to double up with it.
Oh goodness gracious! Bruno is overwhelmed by a barrage of punches! He's down!!!
Referee Guzman starts the count ...
The count is at 8 as Bruno struggles to his knees.
10!
And Bruno can't beat the count! It's over! Bruno has been stopped here by Berbick in round 12!

Bout 275 - Tyrell Biggs versus Riddick Bowe

Round 11 Commentary

Shouts of encouragement for both fighters can be heard as the bell rings for Round 11.
The swelling on the face of Riddick Bowe is noticeable, even at a distance. 0:12
Bowe connects with a vicious cross!
Biggs retreats into the near right corner.
Bowe lands a jab that is fast and accurate.
Bowe slides into a neutral corner ...
Biggs just comes up short with the combination.
Now Biggs takes a punishing over hand right to the jaw!
Bowe feints to the head, then goes downstairs with a wicked hook!
Bowe follows with a hard uppercut!
Bowe landed a sharp combination that rocked Tyrell Biggs back on his heels!
Oh my! Those were devastating blows! Biggs is just trying to hang on!
Bowe traps Biggs in the corner!
There's a hard shot off the top of Biggs's head!
Biggs is trying to reach for the ropes! His legs have turned to jelly!
Biggs takes a hard cross right on the button and he’s finally down!
What a barrage of punches thrown by Riddick Bowe!
Referee Moret stands over Biggs and begins counting ...
Moret continues to count and Biggs isn't even moving! He is completely out at 7!

Moret tolls the fatal 10 as Biggs lays prone on the canvas as his corner rushes in!

Bout 276 - Duane Bobick versus Jimmy Young

There are 3:00 more minutes of fighting to go in the 12th and final round.
Eddie Futch seemed to pump up Bobick between rounds.
Bobick lands a solid hook!
Young takes a punishing over hand right to the jaw!
Young uses subtle movement and a tight guard protecting his body as Bobick tries vainly to score.
Bobick misses with the left and then fails to connect with the right as well.
Young flicks three quick jabs and at least one got through.
Bobick lands a hard hook!
Both fighters are breathing hard now ...
Young steals a quick glance at his corner.
There's a straight right by Bobick!
Bobick has Young in trouble, he is hurt and trying to hang on!!
Although he lost this Round, Young seems to have done enough to win this fight.
The bell sounds ending the 12th and final round of this fight.

Bout 277 - Jimmy Bivins versus Oscar Bonavena

Round 12 Commentary

The bell sounds for the 12th and final round of this fight.
Bivins attempts to go to the body but can't connect.
Oh!!! Bonavena unleashed a crippling right hand to the head of Bivins!
Bivins looks like he might have been hurt by that punch!
However, Bivins bangs the uppercut home.
Bivins is trying to move in behind the jab, which lands.
Bonavena scores with a two-punch combination to the midsection.
Jimmy Bivins has Bonavena blocked in!
And Jimmy Bivins is told to watch the low blows by Ref Van de Wiele.
Bivins flicks a lead right to the head of Bonavena.
Bonavena throws a big looping cross that lands high on the head of Bivins.
That was a savage uppercut from Bonavena, it's amazing Bivins is still on his feet with the force that punch had behind it!
This fight could be even at this point …
Bivins brushes the ropes and quickly spins away, heading back to ring center.
Bonavena is either lucky or he has radar. Bivins's last punch missed landing by a fraction of an inch!
Both fighters look finished as the fight ends with the ringing of the bell & both raise their hands in victory.

Round 12 Commentary

The crowd would like to see a knockout as the bell sounds for Round 12, the final round of the fight.
Witherspoon has Byrd trapped in the lower neutral corner...
Both fighters are holding here. It's a tangle of arms and Ref Nady is going to have to sort this out.
Nady must separate the two ...
Witherspoon just absorbed a terrifying shot to the body.
Byrd goes downstairs with a quick combination.
Byrd connects with stiff right hook to the body.
Byrd misses the lead left but follows up with a right hook that finds the mark.
Byrd fires a punch over the jab of Tim Witherspoon and gets it in for points.
Byrd doubles up on the hook, scoring cleanly to the body and then the head of Witherspoon.
Byrd lands a wicked uppercut!
Byrd drives a stiff jab to the midsection.
Byrd is on his bicycle as he looks to stay away from Witherspoon thinking that he has won this fight!

Round 7 Commentary

Here come the fighters to ring center for Round 7 ...
Williams takes a hard combination from Chuvalo.
That blast sent Williams reeling into the ropes!
Neither fighter has a mark on them at this point of the fight.
A flurry of punches are exchanged between the two fighters.
It appears as if Williams has gotten the better of the exchange.
Chuvalo lands the right hand. He's pretty effective with that punch when he sets it up right.
Williams whiffs with the combination.
Carl Williams connects with a solid uppercut!
Chuvalo connects with the jab.
Williams is overwhelmed by a barrage of punches by Chuvalo! He's down!!!
Referee Roman crouches over Williams and begins to count ...
Williams tries to clear his head as Roman reaches the count of 7.
10!
Williams collapses to the canvas and the fight's over. Williams suffers a knockout here in round 7.

We go to the ring where Pat Harker is ready with the call ...

Round 12 Commentary

Both fighters look determined as the final round gets underway.
Cobb's corner gave his swelling priority during the minute off.
Cobb and Williams stand toe to toe at center ring exchanging leather.
Williams steps back as he tries to create some punching room.
Williams just landed a devastating three punch combo!
That follow-up cross from Cleveland Williams just missed.
Williams goes to the head, then digs a nice combination to the body that had something on it.
Cobb looks to have his legs back under him after that knockdown in the last round.
Williams has an army of supporters in the crowd tonight, judging by the chants we are hearing.
Williams lets his hands go inside and gets in a hook to Cobb's midsection.
Williams is really focused in this round & he should just stay away now as he has the fight in the bag!
A hook to the jaw has Cobb hurt he stumbles forward and he's down!!

Round 8 begins as the bell sounds.
Coetzee lands a quick jab. He'd like to keep Wilder on the end of that punch.
Both fighters are looking to bang inside, as Coetzee lands an uppercut to the jaw.
Wilder throws a good combination that temporarily slows Coetzee.
Coetzee lands the lead cross.
Gerrie Coetzee lands a jab to the head of Wilder.
Wilder lands a strong cross!
There's the uppercut from Wilder. That opening has been there all night for him.
Deontay Wilder retreats to his own corner ...
Wow! That shot landed like a lightning bolt! Wilder is down on his back!
Ref Florian points Coetzee to a neutral corner and begins the count over Deontay Wilder ...
The count reaches 6 as Wilder is struggling to climb off of the deck.
At 9, Wilder is up, but not out of the woods yet as he still looks groggy.
Florian is looking at Wilder closely, and he will allow the fight to continue.

Wepner flicks a lead right to the head of Cooney.
Cooney lands a brutal combination!
Cooney buried that punch into Wepner's ribs.
Cooney throws the jab and it lands cleanly.
Wepner forces his way inside and he lands a nice uppercut to the chin of Cooney.
Wepner has Cooney trapped!
Wepner telegraphed that shot and Cooney ducks under it easily.
Wepner just absorbed a terrifying shot to the body.
Cooney throws a short, bristling uppercut to the chin of Wepner.
Cooney lands a strong follow-up hook!
Wepner was stunned by that blow!
A cross from Cooney lands with some power as Wepner staggers into the ropes!

Bout 283 - Henry Cooper versus Mike Weaver

Round 3 Commentary

Cooper and Weaver square off as the bell sounds to start the action for Round 3.
Frank Bagley was really animated in Cooper's corner and Cooper was nodding in agreement.
Cooper turns on the hook and drives it home under Weaver's elbows.
Weaver is trapped in his own corner ...
Cooper gets a jab in, but it was more of a push than a punch.
Cooper attempts to go to the body but can't connect.
Cooper backs into the lower corner.
It looked like that punch from Weaver landed awkwardly and he is in a lot of pain.
The Referee is asking Weaver if he wants to continue and he indicates he can't!
Cooper is the winner by TKO as Weaver has suffered some type of injury to his hand!

Round 12 Commentary

Both fighters look determined as the final round gets underway in a very close fight.
The swelling on the face of Walcott is almost as pronounced as before his corner worked on it.
Dokes lands the jab but comes up short with a second one right behind it.
Walcott lands a nice jab. He tries to follow it up with a cross, but it misses.
Good work by Walcott as he comes out on top in that exchange.
Dokes lands a pair of short right hands just above the waist line.
Walcott bobs and weaves his way inside and lets his hands go, scoring with a hook.
Dokes's corner is screaming at him to finish the round strong.
Walcott pushes Dokes to gain room to punch.
Walcott lands a smashing hook!
Dokes looks shaken!
Walcott just may have done enough to win this fight here in Round 12.

Round 12 Commentary

As the bell sounds for the final round, it looks as if the scorecards will determine the outcome of this fight.
Valuev launches right a cross to the body.
Joey Fariello was livid with Douglas after his display in that last round.
Valuev works downstairs, scoring with series of hooks.
Douglas lands a wicked uppercut!
Buster Douglas is just missing by a hair with his punches.
Valuev lands a stinging jab.
Douglas has Valuev trapped!
Douglas scores to the body with a jab.
Douglas cranks up the hook and connects to Valuev's jaw, that one had bad intent behind it!
Douglas smothers Nikolay Valuev's attack with a clinch!
Referee Green steps in and breaks it up.
The final round concludes and we're going to have to await a decision to find out who won this contest.

Round 6 Commentary

The bell starts the action in Round 6 as Ellis and Tyson leave their corners.
Al Certo seemed to pump up Ellis between rounds.
Ellis's corner is an experienced crew but the swelling he's suffered looks almost as bad as it did before the minute break.
Tyson connects with a vicious hook!
It seems every shot Ellis takes on his left eye makes the swelling worse.
Jimmy Ellis just absorbed a terrifying shot to the body.
Those punches hurt Ellis and he looks to hang on.
Ellis attempts to go to the body but can't connect.
That hook from Tyson snapped Ellis's head back violently!
Ellis seems to be in big trouble after that blow...
Ellis now seems bothered by the increased swelling around the left eye as he keeps pawing at it.
Tyson catches Ellis coming in with a sweet uppercut!
Ellis takes a hard combination from Tyson.
Look out! That was a straight right by Tyson!
Ellis is being pummeled now and Ref Alonso looks ready to move in and halt the carnage.
Tyson lands a strong cross!
Tyson motions for Alonso to stop the fight ... Alonso is going to do it!!

Round 12 Commentary

Both fighters look determined as the final round gets underway.
Evangelista fires a volley of punches but Tucker was already moving laterally and was out of harm's way.
Not a lot of action in the ring right now.
A brutal combination from Alfredo Evangelista connects to the solar plexus!
Evangelista wings a big left hand at Tucker but the latter sidesteps the punch.
Tucker tries to double up on the hook to the body and at least one gets through.
Evangelista can't score with short uppercut inside. Tucker got his gloves in front of the punch.
Tucker gets in a hook to the body of Evangelista.
The bell sounds ending the final round and now the scorecards will determine the outcome of this fight.

Round 12 Commentary

As the bell sounds for the final round, it looks as if the scorecards will determine the outcome of this fight.
Folley lands two short rights and a left hook to the body.
Tubbs received a pep talk from Al Braverman before he left his corner; we'll see if it worked.
Zora Folley lands the uppercut but there wasn't much on it.
Tubbs tries to get the hook into the the ribs, but Folley blocks it.
Some nice infighting ends with Folley getting an uppercut in.
Folley throws a nice, short uppercut that scores to Tubbs's jaw.
Folley's jab connects to Tony Tubbs's head.
Folley fires another jab to the body this time.
Tubbs looks to land an uppercut but misses the mark.
Folley looks to the midsection, then fires a combination to the head.
Folley uses his legs to avoid Tubbs's punches.

Round 8 Commentary

Foreman is off his stool and waiting for the bell to begin Round 8.
Tillis got quite a pep talk in his corner; we'll see if Angelo Dundee's instructions work.
Tillis feints downstairs, then lands two quick blows to the head.
Foreman lands a vicious cross!
Foreman misses. He had an opening and whiffed with the punch.

Foreman is hitting on the break and Champion has seen enough as he issues a warning.
Oh my! There's a devastating uppercut to the head of Tillis. It came out of nowhere and Tillis drops to the canvas!
Referee Champion starts counting ...
At 4, James Tillis is up and assures the referee he can continue as he takes the mandatory 8 count.
Tillis raises his guard as Champion asks him if he wants to continue.
And now it appears as if Tillis's cut has been reopened by one of those punches that landed on the knockdown.
Blood is dripping down Tillis's face once again, as the cut on his eyelid has been reopened.
Now the referee has called timeout, halting the action. He's leading Tillis to the ringside physician.
The winner by TKO due to the severity of the cuts – George Foreman!

Bout 290 - Bob Foster versus Pinklon Thomas

Round 7 Commentary

Pinklon Thomas looks to be in excellent shape as Round 7 gets underway.
Foster's corner is an experienced crew but the swelling he's suffered looks almost as bad as it did before the minute break.
Thomas scores big with that hook to the jaw of Foster. Foster took a step back after absorbing that shot.
Foster is doing great work inside as he jars Thomas with an uppercut.
Foster fires away but finds nothing but air.
Thomas lands two quick, hard uppercuts forcing Bob Foster to take a half step backwards.
Foster voluntarily moves onto the ropes.
Thomas connects with a violent uppercut!
Foster is hurt and he had better reach deep if he's going to continue!
Thomas slips in a jab to the body.
Thomas senses he has Bob Foster in trouble and he is pouring it on!
Nice pop on that jab from Thomas.
Foster absorbs a cross to the body.
The fighters are trading punches now and Foster seems to have won that exchange.
Thomas lands a solid uppercut!
Bob Foster was stopped cold by that punch and he is staggering across the ring!
Referee Schiavone is taking a close look at Foster, if he doesn't respond this fight could be over.
Thomas sometimes falls in love with his hook ... but when it scores like that one, it's hard to blame him!
And Schiavone throws himself between the fighters! It's over!

Bout 291 - Joe Frazier versus Ernie Terrell

Round 8 Commentary

Round 8 gets underway as the fighters move to the middle of the ring.
Terrell received a pep talk from Freddie Brown before he left his corner; we'll see if it worked.
Terrell scores with a crisp uppercut inside.
Frazier lands a solid hook!
That shot has Terrell hurt!
Terrell's left eye is becoming a cause of major concern as it continues swell.
Frazier lands a hard cross to the head and Terrell is down!!
Referee Garry stands over Terrell and begins the count ...
Terrell tries to clear his head as Garry reaches the count of 3.
At 7, Terrell rises to his feet as Garry starts the mandatory 8 count.
Garry checks Terrell closely and will allow the fight to continue.
Frazier lands a hard cross!
A short follow-up hook to the head by Joe Frazier.
Frazier unleashes a wild hook that just glances off the side of Terrell's head, if that had landed flush this fight might have been over!
Terrell might be blocking some of the blows raining down on him, but the majority are getting through.
Terrell should take a knee or better yet, Garry should wave this fight off and let Terrell live to fight another day!
Joe Frazier lands a quick jab. He'd like to keep Terrell on the end of that punch.
Frazier lands a brutal hook!
Terrell is suddenly in trouble & looks to be “out on his feet!”
And it's over!!! Ref Garry jumps in and wraps his arms around Ernie Terrell!!
The winner by TKO at the 2:43 mark in round 8 is Joe Frazier!!

Bout 292 - Tyson Fury versus John Tate

Round 2 Commentary

The bell starts the action in Round 2 as Tate and Fury leave their corners.
Tate is either lucky or has radar. Fury's last punch missed landing by a fraction of an inch!
Tate pummels Tyson Fury, capping off his assault with a stiff combination!
Fury has Tate pinned!
And Tate goes down!! He walked right into a wicked combination from Fury!!
Referee Pabon moves into position over Tate and begins the count …
The count is at 9 as Tate struggles to his knees.
10!
And the referee waves his arms to signal this fight is over!
Tyson Fury wins by way of knockout here in round 2!
